He's a perfectionist, and such a nice person. It's a complete pleasure to have Mike K do your electric work, so why stray? And, honestly, I don't mind prices to be competitive when the electrician is so excellent. This last time, I requested him again, per usual, and lady on phone said his next available opening is Tuesday am. I get up early, get everything ready, and 2 new people I've never met show up. The one guy is patronizing saying, "can't you see, we're from same company -- look at my shirt and van." Yeah, I can see fine, but not the two people that I expected. I tell them, sorry, no one informed me of the change and I'm not comfortable. So, I send them away, much to their chagrin, and call Aardvark. I get some grumpy guy on phone who tells me that I can no longer request Mike K because now I have to take whomever comes out, or not use their company. I say, "okay, I'll not use your company." I mean, truly? I've been requesting Mike K for going on 5 years, and this is how they treat a loyal paying customer? If you have a policy that I can't request my fav electrician, then tell me upfront. Don't surprise me and be mean about it and expect me just to roll with that. It's my house. I get to choose who I trust to work on it.

Stefan was awesome to work with -- quick to respond, on time, and super clear with communication. Pricing was straightforward and very reasonable, and there was no pressure or upselling, which we really appreciated. Our house had some really old electrical/conduit, and the finished work (both inside and outside at the electrical box) looks so clean and tidy. He even called me before leaving to ask where he could find a broom so he could sweep up. That level of care and pride in the job says it all. For a locally owned hardware store it has pretty good finds. It's located at the intersection in the name of course so that helps a lot. Aha! A person! Oh wait, that's a cardboard cutout. (This actually happened to me recently at a big box.) Finally, you find someone, and they tell you where to find the item in question. Only, the entire endeavor took way too long, meanwhile, the house is a mess while you're gallivanting the aisles. Enter Clark Devon Hardware. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and offered assistance. Even if you are just browsing, others will ask you along the way. If you do ask for help, you will either be taken to the item or shown to a person who can help (as in, 'ask this person right over here,' who sees and waves). The team at Clark Devon is knowledgeable, kind, and no nonsense. They know you have things to do and places to be. They will be happy to help you and send you on your merry way. Clark Devon may not be the prettiest hardware store, and perhaps the big boxes may even have slightly cheaper prices (this is unconfirmed). However, it is my go-to for all hardware and home improvement needs, not only out of a desire to support a locally owned business, but because customer service counts for something too. If I am to offer one smidgen of feedback, it's that I wish they were open until later in the evening. For sometimes you come back from work and discover the closet rod has snapped in two, and you need parts to replace and fix.

Then I quit that place, and did other stuff the whole time I kept running into the same problem. Places didn't have what I needed\wanted. Or if they did I had to wait weeks to get it delivered to them or myself. Then I had an epiphany( yeah I used the "epiphany" for review for a monster tool store, so what). Anyways, I ran into some tools I needed quick and so I looked up and Grainger again and low and behold they had opened a branch on Ashland between Cermak and Archer. PLUS!!!!! Now I can get whatever I want and pick it up in a day or 2, not even have to drive sometimes. Now I can get 2 ton manual chain lifts, 3/4 wire rope slings,5/8 shackles, Tweco connectors, Caster wheels with brakes, bearings, brackets, etc the list could go on forever The one thing is you need to set up an account with them in order to place orders. The upside is you'll never be more than two days away from any shop sh!t you need to finish your project.

Fantastic experience at A Lamp & Fixture. I was lucky enough to come across a gorgeous vintage…read morelight fixture, and I had NO idea if it even worked. To say the least, one persons trash was certainly my treasure! I brought it straight to A Lamp & Fixture. The store is marvelous, and packed full of beautiful, vintage light fixtures. In fact, the guy I worked with mentioned that's what they're most known for. He was kind enough to take a look at the lamp I brought in and was professional and nice the entire time. He was able to get it all up and running and advised me on what lightbulbs to get for it. He only had to replace a couple of plastic parts, and only charged me $10! I was worried the whole thing would need to be re-wired, but I got really lucky and it just happened to work. We have used Mark twice and been VERY impressed with his service. The first time he came to our place, it was because our space pack unit wasn't working and another vendor claimed it would likely cost over $1K to repair. We were suspicious of this and when we called Mark, he found that the other vendor had actually cut a few of our wires and the real problem was that we just needed a new air filter! Mark showed us the issues, explained things in plain English, quickly fixed the problem and charged us a fair price. There are a lot of sketchy vendors out there who are looking to fleece you and having someone like Mark you can trust is huge. He came out again when our AC unit had problems again and did his usual top-notch job. Yes, he isn't the most responsive guy - but keep in mind that he's a small business owner without a lot of infrastructure. It's basically him responding on his cell phone while going from job to job - and he's busy! Sometimes you have to be patient/ follow up with him. But trust me, that patience will be rewarded. I can't say enough about Mark's terrific customer service, responsiveness, and knowledge - he's truly an expert! He was one of the only service technicians in the area that was available for an after hours call during the deep freeze. He quickly diagnosed the problem and got the boiler up and running while explaining the troubleshooting techniques so I could manage the issue until the necessary replacement part came in. He even offered to pick up the part for us if we were able to purchase it from a local supplier. Mark checked in frequently over the 5 days that it took the replacement part to come in to ensure the boiler was still running. We were so thankful that his work kept our boiler running while we waited for the delivery. He was very flexible in scheduling time to come back and finish the replacement and I can say that our boiler is running better than it ever has before. Mark is a saint and a scholar. He is an engineer by trade and enjoys problem solving. After years of dealing with incompetent HVAC techs, Mark came along and discovered the root cause of our long standing issue. Not only did he offer a competitive price, but he also went through the trouble of investigating our unit's warranty and was gracious enough to pick up our replacement. Unlike other HVAC guys, he invested many hours to ensure there were no leaks and that the unit was working properly. You will not find a better HVAC service in Chicago. I must also mention that Mark inspected the entire unit and discovered another heating-related issue that was potentially a fire hazard. He replaced yet another part and most likely saved my house from a fire down the road. My family and I are incredibly grateful for the thoughtfulness and care that Mark puts into his work. read more

A few days ago, Mark fixed my boiler. I had detected a problem. A faint smell of gas was coming from the old reliable Peerless boiler which heats my home. (I suspect this leak was the cause of a persistent headache I had been dealing with.) I called Mark and he immediately fit me into his schedule. Mark was thorough, conscientious, expert, and worth it. He really knows his stuff, and I appreciate his ability to communicate the science in layman's terms. There truly are no silly questions with him. I also appreciate the way he considers the various options and pathways for solving a problem. On the first cold Saturday of October, We were in a bind at two buildings including one burst steam pipe and no heat for 22 residents. I discovered a leak under the sink in the kitchen. A neighbor had told me that if I ever had a plumbing problem I could call Mark so I did. He came the same day to take care of the repair work. Mark did a great job and did the work very quickly. The installation was completed in one day. They were able to start the work within 1 week after I met with them to discuss what I wanted (other shops were estimating 4-6 weeks before they could start. Everything was done exactly as agreed for exactly the price agreed to. The city inspector made a comment that the workmanship on the ducts and PVC exhaust pipes was the best he'd seen. Call this man. Seriously, if you need the job done correctly, efficiently and also want to learn a thing or two then Mark is your guy. No customer service hotlines, no waiting to get transferred, no BS. Called at 10:30am, he stated he had a call to get to but would swing by after. He diagnosed the problem and replaced the damaged part. He also cleaned the coils and showed pictures before and after and also showed on his meters how hot the supply line got before it got cleaned. I learned about Rory through a Nextdoor post singing his praises about 3 years ago and decided to…read moregive him a call to help balance and maintain my hvac system. What's great about Rory is he gives you the chance to understand what's going on with your HVAC system as a whole in a very simple abdominal patient way. He originally came by to balance the baffles in my home to better distribute the cold air where needed and the hot air where needed. We figured out the controls and then he taught me how to do it so I can do it myself when the seasons change. Since that initial balancing Rory has come to do seasonal checkups on my equipment at a very reasonable cost. We finally replaced had to replace my ac system this past week do to a leak/ burst coil. It was a 2011 system that was oversized for my space. We replaced it with a more eco-friendly Bosch system- condenser and coil. It took Rory and his team of 2 about 6 hours. They came in laid down tarps to protect my floors and disconnected everything, documenting the old equipment with photos. Hen then brought in connected and tested all the new equipment. The team was friendly, focused and considering they were hauling huge hvac equipment through my home, up and down stairs, they were very contained. Rory and Northwind are fair, honest, and work with you to figure out the best solution to your home and budget. He's in the wicker park area so central to most neighborhoods, and best of all he's never nickel and dimed me. Could not recommend more.

Our insurance put us over to Joe's and today is the FOURTH time they didn't show up. I tried to call with no answer and the mailbox is full so I can't even leave a voicemail. The outgoing message said to text and they didn't answer that either. I hate leaving negative reviews but this is ridiculous. This place is definitely not reliable. With the weather the way it is, don't take a chance on these guys. You'll end up frozen over with your thumb on the angry emoji.

Surprise early heatwave in Chicago and my central AC stopped working completely. When I reached out to Joe it was 98 degrees inside and I was living on a prayer - I figured I'd need one to find someone to come take a look for me. First call I made was not in fact to Joe but another competitor in the area & I got an estimate of 5 business days for them to come take a look. My next call was to Joe which was at around 4:30 pm on Tuesday. I got through to him right away. Joe was friendly and very receptive. Right off the bat he was up front and honest with me saying that the soonest he could come would be about 24 hours give or take because of already booked appointments. I appreciated the honesty, opened my day, and booked the service appointment. To get technical it was only in fact 17 hours that I had to wait & when Joe showed up I was so worried that something major was wrong and that I would either not be able to afford it or I'd empty my bank account trying . Long story short, Joe reassured me and it turned out that my AC system just needed a really good cleaning and a shot of Free-on. I spent PENNIES compared to what I thought I was going to have to shell out and I was absolutely blown away to have met such an honest, capable AC guy. Less than 2 hours and it's already 5 degrees cooler inside. I was so taken aback, to be honest. To have such a wonderful customer service experience seems so rare these days. Joe is already booked to come back and do a maintenance system clean in 6 months. I highly, HIGHLY recommend Joe for any and honestly all HVAC jobs. There's a comfort in knowing you've "got someone to take a look". I snagged my "hvac guy", should too! : )

They did what they did well. HOWEVER--and this is an enormous however: They charged us a "minimum"…read more$800 fee to come out and fix the electric, which had gone out, in the garage. This is a red flag, but they had done major work on our house years ago, so we went with it. They showed up on time, spent five minutes tightening a wire, got the electric to turn on, and then asked if there was anything else they could do, as they were charging us the full fee. We had them check out a few things we could think of, and they were gone within an hour. You might think, as we did, that that was pricey, but the job got done? NO. five days later, the electric in the garage is out again. We call and they send an estimate with Zeroes in the fee lines, so we OK their return. That morning, a technician comes and asks us how er'e going to pay. Turns out they want to charge us another $800. We called another company, which found the root problem and charged us $200 to fix it. Lesson learned. By the way, the well-praised Todd, who used to be our electrician, no longer works for them.

They would pretend great confidence and then their recommendations would scream "guess" and typically come with a big bill. Not with Ruben. Service requested. Prompt and communicative response. I called Guy up this morning and was lucky to be fit into what I'm sure is a busy schedule. Guy gave me an ETA, diagnosed the problem quickly upon arrival, and was extremely thorough in making sure everything was working well. Within ten minutes, my house was back around 73 degrees from a sweltering 80 before he arrived. All fees were upfront, honest, and very reasonable. It turns out the electrical company turned off our power on accident with no notice and they just had to turn it back on. However, we were still charged $500 for the visit. It just seems unreasonable when zero work had to be done.
