I was sad when Sugarie closed and I've always loved the cookies from Passion Pastry at the farmer's market but I hadn't been to their shop before. On a whim today I called them because I needed a last minute birthday cake and not only were they able to exceed my expectations with a cake but I realized their shop has so much more (coffee, pastries, treats...)! Everybody is raving about the alfajores. I haven't tried these yet, but we did pick up some delicious flaky pastries for breakfast. I got the spinach and feta cheese pie and my daughter chose the blueberry/cream cheese. The crust has a flaky croissant-like texture but the pastry is shaped in a rectangle. All the pastries looked fairly unassuming, but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Safeway (or Whole Foods for that matter) day-old pastries they were not. Heard about Passion Pasrty through Nextdoor and decided to take a leap of faith and ordered my husbands birthday cake through them. For the past 24 years we have always done our cakes through Bijan bakery in San Jose. I met Sofia and parviz on my visit to their shop in Pleasanton. Sofia asked what I like and she made suggestions. They were so good that I went back every week to get a pack and recommended the place to all my friends and family. After they opened their pastry shop I started ordering their cakes. I requested a 2 tier dolce-de lece cake to feed 90 guests. I must tell you the guests and I were blown away. The cake not more beautiful than I imagined it would be but it tasted incredible. It was moist, light, and full of flavor! I have a family full of chef's, one is a pastery chef for a 5star rest. in SF and even she was blown away by how good Sofia's cake was. Had some of their Mexican Wedding Cookies and Alfajores at Sunday's Jack London Square farmer's market. The man running the stand is really friendly and generous with the samples. And I am glad he was, because it led me to buy a combo pack. It is now taking every ounce of my willpower to not eat every single one of them! Seriously - check them out. This is a bakery that has been a part of farmers markets in the area and particularly Pleasanton. Sofia is a pastry chef trained in Guadalajara and makes exquisite cakes and delicious cookies.
