Service was on the slower end of what I would expect for a semi fine dining location but still within the boundaries of what I would consider reasonable. While Passionfish is best known for its creative culinary preparations of sustainably sourced fish and seafood, the hidden secret that keeps guests coming back is their amazing wine list, which covers a wide spectrum of styles, price ranges, and places of origin. And many of the best wines on the list are hearty, soulful red wines that don't pair well with fish. Thankfully, the chef de cuisine here isn't oblivious to the "red wine dilemma" and has crafted several dishes that make excellent pairings with a good bottle of, say, Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon. These include the duck confit and the lamb tagine, both of which are staples on the menu but get slightly variable treatments depending on the season. On our recent dinner here, we found a highly desirable wine on the list (downloadable as a .pdf, so you can study it ahead of time), a 2002 Ahlgren "Bates Ranch" SCM Cabernet ($75), that we very much wanted to try. The winemaker has retired and his vintage wines from the 2000s have something of a cult following, so to find such a well aged, reserve wine on the list was a special treat. We basically built our meal around the wine, rather than the other way around. We started with a shared appetizer of lightly fried local squid served with a spicy salad of seasonal greens, including purslane and fennel. We moved on to our mains, which were well matched with the reserve Cabernet, a more elegant and restrained style than many Napa or Sonoma Cabs. We savored the wine long after the mains were finished before sharing a Meyer lemon panna cotta desert plate with a paired herbal tea. All in all, the meal was a great success, even as the restaurant itself got progressively louder, warmer, and more crowded as the evening wore on. No, it wasn't a mind-altering meal that set a new standard, nor was the wine perfect (but still a 95+ in my book), but who asks for that when dining out? Keep the red wine list in mind the next time you're planning to dine at Passionfish. Make it more of a "Passionflesh" visit and choose a great wine to accompany the meal. Food was very good as usual. When our server was explaining the menu she accidentally spit, and promptly apologized. I was disappointed that she did not wear a mask when conversing with us and especially when serving our food, (yet the other servers outside were wearing masks). I did ask her about their policy, and she said that it's up to them and that she is vaccinated, and tired of wearing a mask. She kindly said that she has asked other tables before if they prefer if she wore a mask, and has complied, ( yet we were not asked). This is why I am giving a 3 vs. 4. Nailed it! What a lovely place for a special dinner. We had a party of 6 and were able to try many of the dishes on the menu to our pleasure.. We started with the sea bass crudo with a refreshing pomegranate granita. Fresh and light. The ceviche tostaditos were pleasantly spicy, tender and delicious. The fried calamari was light and melt in your mouth. Entrees of the lamb, scallops, arctic char, and seared ahi were excellent. The seafood and meats were prepared perfectly, seasoning right on. The side of savory rice pudding... for me, not a favorite. I chose to leave it on my plate in deference to the best buttermilk biscuit I've ever eaten. Don't leave without trying the biscuit, it's unforgettably flaky, buttery and salty... My preference would have been to have been given more of the delicious sautéed veg and a biscuit, and lose the pudding... the texture is off, too literally pudding like. Cooked in a Bain Marie? ...For me the seasoning did not match the beautiful briny mineraly flavor of the scallop dish... The desserts are not to be skipped.. they are excellent. No after thought on the menu! The chocolate cake, lemon panna cotta, maple bread pudding, and mint chip ice cream were very memorable. The service was highly efficient, pleasant, and unobtrusive. This was my first time, but my husband has eaten here before. What prompted me to write a review was how despite Yelp indicating it's not kid-friendly, we had a different experience. I was planning on sharing with my daughter but the server told us they had three kid-friendly plates (not on menu) available. She got the grilled rockfish with perfectly salty smashed fingerling potatoes and green beans (and still took from both of our plates - husband had the scallops with savory rice custard, I had duck confit with smoked chile-potato cake and grilled broccolini). Granted, my child has a more sophisticated palate than most four-year-olds, but still, it was a lovely child's plate and only $8. (I did dip her fish in my honey reduction for more flavor). What a wonderful dining experience! The service was impeccable and the food was well-thought and delicious. We started with the smoked trout tostaditas. The colors of the dish were vibrant and the portion was perfect. My girlfriend had the Dungeness crab salad which she loved. I had the Brussels sprout salad which was recommended to me and it did not disappoint. For the main course, we had the Arctic Char and the Sea Scallops and both were impressive. I really enjoyed how the chef was able to create such a variety of flavors in each dish the tickled the palate. To close we ordered the chocolate truffle torte. First, I must say the food was very tasty, which is why I didn't give one star. My review is for the takeout service. We were visiting town with a toddler and baby, so we placed a takeout order at 5:15 for pickup at 6 pm. We get there at 6, I go inside to pick up while husband has baby and toddler in car. They tell me it will be a few minutes. I'm waiting awkwardly as it becomes longer than a few minutes. Toddler and baby are hungry and tired, so they start screaming in the car. Eventually the staff tells me their auto receipt printer failed to print out our order, but it will be coming soon. It did not. I was standing there 30 minutes with several reassurances it was about to come out. Meanwhile kiddos are screaming in the car. If they had been upfront that they STARTED our order when I arrived, we could have dropped them off at the hotel. Or at least tried to drive around instead of parked by the restaurant. Also, with COVID positive rates at 1/12 asymptomatic people in the Bay Area (source: UCSF data), I did not want to be in a restaurant full of unmasked eating people for half hour. I would have waited outside or in the car or ANYWHERE else besides next to unmasked people indoors. I understand mechanical failures happen. A little honesty on their part would have made a huge difference, and I could have made adjustments appropriately. read more

Used to be a very good restaurant but the chef has changed. He thinks that just throwing unusual combinations together is a mark of creativity. Some work but what I had definitely did not. The duck confit with an acidic type of sauce was a disaster on top of the fact that the meat was dry and tough, as if it had been cooked several days before and reheated in a microwave oven. I mentioned it to the server who graciously removed that dish from my bill. I must admit that I liked the dessert. A Roquefort ice cream just as good as the one I do myself. My wife had some so-so scallops served with radishes, quartered and sautéed, a very creative combination but it simply does not work. She also mentioned it to the server who replaced the radishes by an overcooked concoction of sweet potatoes. What an insult, the good looking scallops did not deserve to be treated like that. The wine selection is ok, not great, but decently priced. The food is overpriced just like in every new wave California genius cook creative restaurant. It's now the next morning, drinking my coffee and I am still sad and missing the Passionfish of my previous visits. PS: the staff is great, I gave them a big tip anyway. read more

I ate at passionfish on 5/5. The starters were on point, I got sea scallop and black bean goat cheese fritters. Both starters tasted good and were presented nicely. For the entrees, I had 12-hour lamb breast and rockfish. The lamb breast had a well-balanced flavor and good heat to it. The rockfish dish was not seasoned enough and it was dry, not flaky at all. Despite the tough times with the economy, some restaurants just seem to be resilient to recession. Passionfish is definitely one of those and when I saw the packed crowds at the restaurant, I am guessing there must be a good reason.Sure enough, once we tasted the food and enjoyed the lovely service, I could see why. Our large party shared orders of the oyster shooter and crab cakes which were both very good. It is very hard to find good crab cakes with the right amount of breading to crab ratio. However, what we had that night was 100% pure dungeness crab!! It was very very lightly coated with breading and came with a very nice and light lime relish. For main entrees, I tasted the smoked trout, the peppercorn mahi, the seared scallops and the today special spot prawns. Everything was so fresh and the different sauces accompanied each entree very nicely. Good food, good service, good company... what more can you ask for? 4.5 stars. We were looking for something not too touristy near Monterey, and decided to try out this place, which ended up being a wonderful choice. The restaurant is actually pretty big inside, but separated into different dining rooms so it feels more intimate. It looks like a classier restaurant than the clientele might lead you think, but then, who dresses up in NorCal that much anyway? ;) We started with the butternut squash and bacon chowder, and the scallop with the artichoke risotto cake. Both of the appetizers tastes much bolder than I thought they would. The scallop was cooked perfectly so it wasn't chewy, and while I think the relish covered up the scallop's taste in the end, it was still a solid appetizer. Onto our main courses -- the sturgeon with curry sauce and the arctic char with sweet onion rice. Both of the fishes were lovely; not over cooked and tasted fresh. The curry sauce matches the steaky sturgeon well, but the star is in the lemongrass slaw, which includes pieces of jicama. The arctic char was good as well, and the sides were more subtly flavored than the appetizers so the fish's taste could be brought out. We then ended with some desserts and tea. I do agree with some of the Yelper's comment that the tea might not have been steeped with water that is hot enough; however with my ginger chamomile tea it ended up being alright. I just couldn't taste the ginger much so I wasn't wild about it. The mister has this mud pie that he devoured -- it was so good he literally didn't care how full he was. My crème brûlée was great as well, silky smooth and flavorful. Overall this was a pleasant meal. On top of that, they have a nice wine list that is not too pricey, and they serve sustainable fish. Even though the menu contains fusion items, I still think this place is more American (in terms of flavour) than the standard Californian place. We were super excited to eat here. The menu looked very interesting and it's run by a husband and wife couple - the chef and the daughter of a fisherman. What's not to like? We were extremely impressed with their approach to wine. All wines by the bottle (or half) appeared to be only a modest (maybe $5) markup over retail and the selection was excellent. We had a half bottle of a great Montlouis sur Loire. However, the food wasn't quite as good as we were hoping. A lot of dishes were fried - which can be delicious - but it got to be a bit much and repetitive (felt like the same coating on everything) as we worked through the meal. (bacon fritters, mushroom fries, crab cake, sardine caesar salad) Bacon fritters were yummy (expect blocks of meat, not strips), but a ceviche tostadita missed the mark (the tostadita was too bread-like and chewy, and the ceviche lacked acid). The mushroom fries were tasty with meaty bits of portabello. The crab cake was the best we've had - perfectly cooked, sweet, and delicate. Unfortunately, the deconstructed sardine Caesar salad just didn't work. The sardines were fried, but just not particularly appetizing to us -and we're usually huge fans! The lettuce was grilled, and the dressing was set into a kind of panna cotta. The dish sounded fantastic but it just didn't work particularly well- not enough parmesan, the plate was a mess when you finally put it together, and the sardines tasted funky. Finally, we had the scallops with tomato-truffle butter and a risotto custard. The scallops were cooked perfectly, if a little over-seasoned, and the sauce was strong and tasty, but the risotto was really disappointing. It was mushy and completely lacking the great bite risotto good risotto should have. This place warrants 3 1/2 stars, but we're rounding up to 4 for the great attitudes on wine and their commitment to sustainable seafood. CONS: Small portions ($9 for a one scallop appetizer? Really?) higher than justifiable prices on several items. We wore jeans and sweaters and felt completely at home, many people were better dressed but this is the sort of place that I love- either works fine and there is no feeling of being over or under dressed. That isn't always so easy in finer restaurants but at Passionfish you feel comfortble either way. My crab salad was appetizer sized, but perfectly balanced and flavorful. The generous portion of crab meat was combined with arugula, avocado and light dressing to = one of the most perfect dishes I've had in some time. Priced at $16 and worth every penny. My appetizer was a small bowl of mussels with thai like flavors- fragrant and tangy. The broth was so delicious that I ate it all (and I *never* do that :) Again, perfectly balanced and a delight to eat. Priced at $12 and again, worth it. My friend had a seared scallop appetizer and shockingly it was one scallop. It was perfection but seriously? ONE scallop? We couldn't help but giggle about it. Priced at $9 and although it was a flavor party, definitely over-priced. If there had been two scallops it would have been fair. Another entree was a scallop dish (there were three of them in the entree). Very nice but priced at $28 I believe? Again, too high. That scallop entree had unfortunately been saddled with a misleading menu description of being served with a "savory rice pudding" which almost caused her to skip ordering it. In fact, I might have ordered that entree as well but for that weird description. (By the time the waiter corrected our perception of the dish, I had already decided to go with something else. I hope they reconsider using that description). Our waiter clarified for us that it was really a risotto pudding, almost a souffle, so she ordered it and it was fabulous (according to her). I tried a bite of the puffy risotto 'sponge' and wasn't thrilled with the texture- but souffles and airy textured foods are not my thing. If you like that sort of thing, you may have loved it. The wine list was impressive in variety as well as the fact that they sell their bottles at retail. So, although the FOOD is very pricy, the wine was actually quite reasonable. Their corkage fee is $20, which we also found to be a bit high. Passionfish is passionate :) about using sustainable fish so much of it was not locally sourced- but for admirable reasons. Definitely a wonderful restaurant and I'd love to go back. But when I do, I'll expect to spend $50 per person for food (before drinks or desserts) which I hadn't expected when we made this visit. read more

Let me start my review by saying that there isn't anything that I can think of that was even slightly off about the food and service at Passionfish. This is one of the best meals out that I've had in... well, quite a long time. I ended up sampling a bit of everyone's appetizers and I probably enjoyed the crab cakes the most. The corn chowder with bacon was KILLER and definitely one of the best soups that I've ever had. Words do not come close to describing the amazing taste! For a main course, I had the sturgeon. The fish was so tender and flavorful. I couldn't even believe that it was amazing as it was. My mom's scallops were also amazing. I couldn't think that I would even want to get dessert after that extreme food intake, but my cousin ordered me the chamomile creme brulee. It was amazing! I'm so glad that he ordered it. Anyway, I could go on forever, but I'm going to stop because typing on a blackberry is kinda slow. Basically, if you're in the area, you NEED to go to Passionfish! It's that good! read more

Good food and a great atmosphere make this a lovely date night spot. The Rainbow Trout itself was good, but the side dish it came with was disappointing (hot grapes are not for me). The Coho Salmon was the opposite -- beautiful garnish and supporting flavors, but the fish itself was less satisfactorily cooked. Smoked Trout Ceviche Tostaditas were delicious (if a little small), as were the desserts (Meyer Lemon Panna Cotta was the perfect blend of sweet and tart with an excellent floral meringue, Chocolate Truffle Torte was rich and balanced by the passion fruit, and the tea pairings were great). Nearby diners had fantastic looking dishes (like the Crab Cake and Mahi Mahi), but I can only speak to my own meal. My husband and I went up to Monterey for our anniversary trip, and we picked Passionfish for dinner. It was a great meal, and we had a wonderful time! The decoration is very nice. It is very comforting looking. Since we were there before 6pm, the sun was still out. With all the big windows in the restaurant, it was bright and nice. I love bright rooms! When I made the reservation a month ago, I put in that the dinner was for anniversary. I wasn't sure what to expect. When the restaurant host brought my husband and I to our table, we saw the words "Happy Anniversary" written on the table. It was very cute and sweet. I was very impressed with Passionfish alcohol policy. They served their alcohol drink at almost retail price. My husband got a bottle of Scrimshaw beer for only $4. Wonderful policy! We ordered DUNGENESS CRAB CAKE for starter. It was a little small, but delicious!!! The crab was very fresh, and there wasn't any filler (crackers) in the crab cake. For entree, I got SEA SCALLOPS WITH RISOTTO CUSTARD. The scallops were huge and they were cooked perfect. The risotto custard was creamy and satisfying. And, I love the minted celery. I never thought I would like anything mint, but these celery cubes were sweet and refreshing. It balanced out the whole dish! Yum!!!! My husband got CRISPY TILAPIA WITH THYME MASHED POTATOES. The fish was crispy and good. I liked it. The mashed potatoes was mashed potatoes. Nothing really special. But my husband really liked the red wine sauce. Dessert is a must for anniversary dinner. :) My husband got himself the special dessert of the night. He had FRESH STRAWBERRIES IN RED WINE REDUCTION WITH TOASTED MARSHMALLOW. The dessert came with a lighted candle and warm wishes from a waitress. I loved the homemade marshmallow. It was nothing like store-brought. It was fluffier and lighter. It went very well with the fresh strawberries. I ordered MEYER LEMON PANNA COTTA. The panna cotta was smooth and creamy with a hint of lemon. The oranges were fresh and sweet. It was a light and amazing dessert. Overall, it was a wonderful dinner. The food was really good. The check came out less than $100 with tax and tips. For good seafood, that was a good price. Delicious, surprising every time. I love this restaurant! It's one of my favorite "fancy places", although overall the prices are not outrageous, especially since the food is unique and fabulous. Last time, I had the black cod, wow. Each time, I love to finish with the Chocolate Truffle Cake with passion fruit sauce, so memorable! read more

Great dining experience in Pacific Grove. Nice service and ambiance, but the food was the star. I tried: - Striped bass crudo (4/5) - Nice fishy flavor with some tangy notes as well. - Biscuits (5/5) - I assume there is some theoretical limit to the amount of butter you can put in biscuit mix before it no longer bakes properly, and these must be right at the threshold. Extremely buttery and soft, just excellent. - Sea scallops (5/5) - For some reason, scallops seem to be the most mis-cooked item I ever order, so I was prepared to be disappointed. However, these were cooked perfectly and really went well with the tomato truffle sauce. - Bread pudding (3/5) - Pretty good, but not memorable. There was also a massive wine list and a decent bottled beer list. We'll definitely be coming back here the next time we're in Pacific Grove / Monterey / Carmel. read more
