I'm not sure how I haven't already reviewed this spot but after visiting last night I figured I can finally put something together while it's fresh. I love love love this spot. I rarely spend time in Boulder without at least trying to convince people to grab lunch or dinner here (lol). The gnocchi is the first thing I tried here and it's so wonderful and always comes out hot and bubbling. Last night I opted for the Hagan option which allows you to try three dishes at once! Amazing option for the indecisive diner or hungry one.... Pasta Jays is right on Pearl and nestled between tons of great shopping, dining, and other businesses. It can get pretty busy and has cozy but somewhat tight inside dining so keep that in mind. The food here is killer. I have enjoyed everything I've tried so far and love that everything always comes out HOT! The decor is fun and they have some colorful chandeliers mixed with more classic Italian restaurant decor. If you aren't sure where to start with the menu I would definitely suggest giving the gnocchi a try or be so bold to do the Hagan and pick a few other favorites to enjoy. read more

This our fave Italian spot! You have to get the garlic knots!!! Lots of hot bubbly cheese on almost everything. Get a bottle of sauce to take home and you can have another Pasta Jay's experience at home. read more

This is my go to place when visiting Boulder with my aunt and uncle. Maybe it's because of the massive portions of food that turn into two meals, or because they always include a bunch of sauce with their pasta but regardless I always enjoy some good pasta. The restaurant itself is everything you'd imagine when you think of an Italian restaurant in the US, right down to the red and white checkered table coverings. Pasta Jay's is right off of Pearl St so don't be surprised if you end up having to wait for a table especially if it's a nice day out on the weekend. They have a pretty diverse variety of pasta options, with pre-set entrees that include meat or mix and match pasta with sauces where you can pick your own meat to add for an additional charge which can get pricey pretty quickly. The garlic bread is perfectly greasy and toasted and is one of the highlights of any visit. The pasta has always been served hot right out of the oven, and is consistently good for satisfying my desire for some American style Italian. The only drawbacks I can think of are that the service can be pretty hit or miss depending on how busy they are and that some of their tables along the windows are pretty squished together which can be difficult to handle if you are there with kids/a larger group. read more

The food was good and so was the staff. I will say they were understaffed however everything was fantastic. It was parents weekend however with the food being good and the service being decent the restaurant was great. My sister enjoyed it as did my girlfriend and father. I would easily return for the chicken parmigiana. Not included is the chicken fettuccine Alfredo which was devoured previous to picture taking. read more

So, last night we went to Pasta Jay's for our last night prior to flying. Ya know, gotta fill up on all those carbs before the plane takes off, am I right? Also, for hibernation, as the world is looking at a couple weeks of isolation and self-quarantine to protect other people. (Side note: do what you say so you don't negatively-impact others' lives such as our older generations and the immunity-suppressed) Food - Happy Hour appetizers: 1. Parm-y cooked brussel sprouts because we just have to order them at every restaurant we go. Literally my favorite food. I know, I'm weird. 2. Pizza Rosario - basically mozzarella, tomatos, and spinach with parm flakes sprinkled on top. Ooh, and the crust was all thin and crispy. My favorite type of pizza. Cooked to perfection Main entree- 1. Veggie cannelloni - basically like an Italian enchilada stuffed with ricotta cheese and all the vegs surrounded by a moat of amazing tomato sauce. *we also ordered several take-out pizzas for the plan and today's dinner so we don't need to worry about going to the store and contamination... Service - The people are super friendly. Everyone is always so smiley and try their best to serve you. Not at the quickest, most efficient time but they do their jobs. Even if it takes 45 minutes to get your appetizers. I know we live in America so we have the "quick food 24/7 please", but it's well-worth the wait. Patience is the most essential virtue for the best quality of life, I'd say. Pasta Jay's is super popular, thus they will obviously have a slower service rate. Rome wasn't built in a day. Good food. Good people. Slower service, but, if at the end of a train signal, you get exceptional quantities and quality of Italian food, then it really doesn't matter, does it? read more

Best avoided. Lowest possible score from the health dept. restaurant inspection: marginal (see below). Sforno Trattoria (3 blocks east) got excellent. Holy Crêpe on Broadway and Arapahoe got 5 stars (don't tell anybody). read more

We had an excellent and very delicious Sunday family dinner here! Highly recommend the Pizza with Sausage and Red Pepper. The Vegetable Salad for 2-3 was delicious and the Caesar Salad was also great! Pasta dishes were also good large portions! Service is friendly and prompt! We sat by the window and had a nice view of Pearl Street. read more

At 4:45 on a Friday, this place was mobbed full of customers. Our server was friendly and took good care of us. Portion sizes were large and the food was delicious. I ordered chicken parmesan and my partner got the stuffed chicken meal. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the food. read more

After reading all the reviews we decided to visit on a hot day in Boulder. We took a seat in the main dining room near the bar and ordered the rigatoni burrata, baked eggplant and chicken piccata. The garlic bread was delicious but perhaps 2 minutes too long in the oven as it would have been more palatable if it were a tad softer. The burrata dish was huge and hubby ate every last bite even though he generally cannot plough through such a generous portion. My eggplant was good but would probably try something new on the next visit. Daughter had her standby favorite, chicken piccata and said it was the right blend of lemon to oil and garlic and that the chicken was perfectly cooked. Thought the price points were reasonable for lunch and will definitely be back when it gets cooler, or at night to try their other popular menu offerings. Nice venue, views, and good servers. I can totally understand their popularity. Parking on a weekday lunch was a breeze and we enjoyed strolling the mall afterwards to walk off the rich lunch. Place was moderately busy for lunchtime on a Tuesday afternoon but I am sure that this place is hopping closer to dinner hour. read more

I am so glad we splurged and chose to have lunch here. I don't normally eat Italian food so it was a real treat! The salads were very fresh. They have a fantastic lunch menu, and sandwiches cheaper than subway was a nice surprise. I had the chicken carbonara and it was delicious. The complementary garlic bread was hot and tasty as well. Everyone at our table was raving about how good the food is. If you are in the area give it a try, we will be back next time we are in Boulder. read more

Food was so good. The gnocchi was insane I wish I could've had more. Our waitress was super nice and our waters were constantly refilled. The tables were kind of packed together and food took a bit of time to get to us(some got food before us who we had gotten there before) but wasn't terrible. Overall really great :) read more

I give it 5 stars - not because it is the most authentic amazing Italian, but because it is just delicious, hot and enjoyable. You may get a stomach ache but that's just because it's not stingy portions, and a lot of dairy, not because of the actual food quality. Also the free bread is phenomenal. My wife and I were in Boulder to look for puzzles, and a friend had recommended Pasta Jay's for lunch. So, we stopped in, with high hopes. Our hopes were dashed however, after lunch arrived. The salads we ordered were "ok". My balsamic vinegar dressing was good. My wife's bowtie pasta was not good. She complained of a "funny flavor". When I tasted it I had to agree. There was a bitter undertaste which made it inedible. Our server, Hailee, had it taken off our ticket without our asking, which was nice. She was a pleasant, efficient server. I got their meatball sub; two meatballs nestled in a piece of hollowed out bread, covered with two large green pepper slices, then smothered in a red spaghetti sauce and monterrey jack cheese. Sounds good, doesn't it? In reality, it wasn't. I felt as if I was stuffing myself on bread, red sauce and cheese. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. It didn't taste terrible, but I think the issue was with the meatballs. There were just two smallish meatballs, and they were hard and compact, with a gritty kind of feel to them. It tasted like a mouthful of red sauce and bread. I just pulled the unappealing green pepper slices out. I loved their garlic toast! That was probably the best part of the meal, next to the ambience. We asked for, and got, a 6-top by an open window in the front. We were up close and personal, kind of, with people walking by on Pearl Street. Enjoyable. We had their "triple layer chocolate cake" for desert, which was double layered. That was OK though; the cake was a hunk of cake. For $10 though, it should have been. It was not very good though . . . it was dry and without a lot of chocolate flavor, which was weird, because it was chocolate-looking from top to bottom. I would have guessed that it was an imported Sweet Street product, except that Sweet Street *used to* make better stuff than this. After our comped plate the total came to $30.67. We tipped Hailee $20 because she was such a sweetheart. Next time we're in Boulder though, we won't be stopping at Pasta Jay's. Personally, I'd say they need a new kitchen manager. They've been there for 35 years, getting by on average food and great location, but, as mentioned, we won't be back, unlike Arnold. read more

The service is always friendly and it's a cute little restaurant. It's pretty crowded when busy, the tables are really close to each other. Some of my family really loves the food. Some of us aren't crazy about it. It really comes down to personal preference. The red sauce is pretty intense. So again, not saying there is anything specifically wrong here, but it's not my style of food. Having said that, some in my family are big fans. So the 4 stars feels like a good compromise on that. Portions are huge. We aren't good about actually eating leftovers that we take home and we don't really like the same things so sharing doesn't work but if large portions are important to you, this place is for you. 1 star service, over a 40 minute wait until we were asked what we would like to order (shout out to Charlie, one of the worst servers we've ever experienced) 1 star food, took an hour to come out after ordering over cooked noodles & overcooked meatballs. Didn't even take a bite. Went to hot dog stand down the street after wasting nearly 2 hours of my trip here. read more

This is the spot for CU fans. Make a visit like we did!! We Loved this spot right in the heart of bustling Pearl St. Enjoyed sitting outside and taking in the scene while we ate our fresh salads and pasta dish. Excellent, filling and fabulous meatsauce! Went here for a family evening out. We had to be separated in to two table- even with a reservation. It is in a great spot in Boulder right in the heart of all the shopping and restaurants. They have a great menu and lots of choices. They also offer a full bar and have a nice selection of wines. Their selection of pastas and sauces are great- as you can pretty much mix and match it all. The bread and garlic knots are super fresh and are great while you wait for the main dish. The pastas are huge servings and definitely fill you up. I really enjoyed the alfredo sauce with gnocchi. Hubs got the eggplant parmesan and he really thought it was yummy. Will def be going back here again when we visit. read more

History

Established in 1988.

In June of 1980, when Jay Elowsky was 20 years old, he moved from Bay City, Michigan and started washing dishes for his Aunt Kathy and Uncle Sonny, who owned "Sonny's Pizza" in San Clemente, California. After a year stint at CU in Boulder, he decided the pasta business was where his heart was. So he returned to Sonny's to cook for six more years in order to learn the family recipes that had been passed down to him by his mother, "MaMa Genovese", whose grandmother was the cook for the first King of the United Countries of Italy, Victor Emanuel the Second. In September of 1988, his Mom (Jean) and Dad (Lowell) and Jay opened up Pasta Jay's in Boulder at 9th and Pearl. Now almost three decades later - besides the Boulder eatery there are Pasta Jay's locations in Lone Tree, Moab, and the most recent opened in Hays in September of 2016. Generations later we continue to use family recipes to create "food fit for a king"!

If you buy ready made sauces when you cook Italian then don't bother reading this review - it won't be applicable. You'll visit Pasta Jay's and leave thinking the food is relatively decent. If, on the other hand, you make your sauces from scratch then you'll relate to my review. We used to eat there a couple of years ago when we lived near Boulder. At the time the food was decent and hearty. The interior decor is interesting with reclaimed brick, elegant arches and columns, though sadly, the retro red and white checkered tablecloths are stuck in 1970s and do aesthetic sabotage to all the lovely brickwork. On the last visit enjoyed the spaghetti with prawns and sugo freddo sauce which was really tasty and the prawns were cooked perfectly. Went back for a meal in March 2016. This last visit was underwhelming.We ordered a Caprese to start. It was good, abit mean on the basil but relatively tasty. Ordered the a la Genovese with mushrooms and artichokes as the entree. It arrived quickly, looking delicious and mouthwatering in a lovely earthen bowl. If only it had tasted as good as it looked. The pomodore freddo or what's known as marinara in the US, was sad, overly acidic, one dimensional and totally lacking in depth. It reminded me of those awful ready made mixes you buy in a plastic packet. There was no balance of tomato/sugar/salt/drop of citrus ratio. The artichokes tasted like they'd just been thrown into the sauce from the can without any TLC or marinading to bring out their wonderful subtle flavour. The mushrooms were canned. In Italy you'd get beaten over the head if you served canned mushrooms. Had a few mouthfuls of the pasta but it was too depressing - the canned mushrooms killed it for me. Also the staff seemed confused as to who ordered what and hovered around the table looking abit lost. They were just doing their job and maybe it was a training night? To top it all when my partner asked for espresso they said they don't serve coffee as they don't have a coffee machine! They also don't have cannoli in their dessert list. When Pasta Jays goes back to real cooking instead of making (or using) what tastes like ready made catering mixes that are called sauce and use fresh mushrooms maybe I'll go back to eat there. The sad and depressing canned mushrooms served at Pasta Jays made me want to make my mushrooms at home: with fresh porcini grilled in a decent olive oil, lashings of rock salt, lemon juice, pepper, freshly cut Italian parsley, fresh garlic, a sprinkling of bread crumbs and parmesan. read more

I've always heard great things about Pasta Jay's, and I will say the food absolutely lived up to expectations. However, I was extremely disappointed in the service we received during our visit. Despite the restaurant not being particularly busy, our server was noticeably inattentive to our table. We tried multiple times to get her attention, but were met with what felt like being deliberately ignored. This wasn't just a matter of being busy or overwhelmed--it seemed personal, and it really affected our overall experience. At the end of the meal, I left a 10% tip due to the poor service. I'm typically a generous tipper and fully understand the importance of tipping well, but service is a key part of the dining experience, and in this case, it fell far short. To my shock, the server made a rude remark after seeing the tip and then physically tapped me on the shoulder in a clearly frustrated manner. That kind of behavior--especially any form of unwanted physical contact--is absolutely unacceptable. Even after we left the table, we could see the server making unkind remarks about us to other staff members, which was both unprofessional and uncomfortable to witness. I rarely leave negative reviews, and I take no joy in doing so here, especially because the food really was wonderful. But I hope management takes this seriously. No guest should leave a restaurant feeling disrespected or uncomfortable, regardless of the circumstances. Pasta Jay's has so much potential, but service like this detracts from the experience entirely. read more

Zero stars isn't an option? Here goes nothing. We showed up to our "reservation" to wait 20 more minutes to be seated. In 100 degree weather. We had a party of 6 that was cramped into a corner with the expectation of us fitting. With 3 empty tables around us the staff could have been accommodating considering we all drove a long distance to even try the "food". Alcoholic drinks tasted poorly made. All sour and lime, nothing to write home about. One of the staff dumped meatballs on my mother in law. While another tried to hand a piping hot pizza dish to one of us to sit in the table. One of our pizzas was just dropped on the way to us. The table was so small that we were expected to fit everything in it whilst being cramped. I can't stress enough how much of a disappointment this was. Please do not go here. There are much better options. read more

The food itself was good enough, but it's the small things that make or break a place for me. Our waitress was not very friendly, and if we took too long deciding what we wanted to order, she would literally walk away before we could tell her! I had a glass of the house wine, although once I found out it is cheap box wine, I felt sort of cheated. I also tried the Jay's On the Rocks, which tasted terrible but I literally forced myself to finish because the tiny glass of it cost $10! They charge $3 for additional garlic bread which comes with the order, and when we asked our waitress to split the check for us, she rolled her eyes. Not great service, not great drinks, and food that is alright. Honestly, next time I'm in the mood for reasonably priced Italian in Boulder, I'm going to Olive Garden. read more

I read an earlier review about Urban Meyer enjoying this place so I decided to stop by for a bite Thursday. Lo and behold, that muthafucka was there again!!! Is he a part-owner or something??? Seriously, what are the odds??? It was tough to tell but Urban looked like he got the Pasta Margherita so I obviously did the same. It was tough to focus on the food with the whole sitting 9 FEET AWAY FROM URBAN MEYER SITUATION, but the noodz were pretty solid. I prob shouldn't admit this publicly, but Urban dropped a few strands of pasta on the ground and I definitely snagged those bitches as soon he left LOL. If you want good pasta, this place is just a'ight but if you want to see Urban Meyer in the flesh, this place is a 10 out of 10! read more

This place was just okay. It's a typical red-checked tablecloth place, with passable red sauce and mediocre service. It's about on par with an Olive Garden, but has a more "mom and pop" feel to it. It's also nice to walk the area after that filling pasta dinner. For pasta basics, it's a decent meal for an okay price, but I wouldn't go crazy and order anything beyond the basic pasta dishes. They are a little overpriced there and I don't really have faith that they'd be worth it. The crowd is very boulder, families mixed with young college couples and random people. read more

I gotta admit I'm a stickler when it comes to my Italian food, with an Italian grandmother who's a wicked cook it hard to please this Brooklyn boy. For me Pasta Jay's just doesn't make the cut. First off not all Italian food has to be smothered in olive oil and mozzarella. Second, there are spices other than garlic. I love my garlic, but not when it overpowers any flavor. On the plus side, good Gorgonzola salad and nice Chianti choices, but overall I wasn't exactly thrilled. read more

I'm visiting from out of state and an associate recommended the place. I was hesitant due to some of the reviews but it was a great choice. Some times you can please everyone! Great location. The staff was friendly and informative. They recommended the tortellini borbellini and it was delicious. The place was packed and I can understand why. In such a politically correct world (and city for that matter), I am shocked the Italian population of Colorado hasn't demanded their cuisine stop being degraded by Pasta Jays. I love their food but had a terrible experience a few months back. I had made a reservation a week in advance and the hostess argued with me that my reservation was for two weeks from now. Ridiculous. Who argues with a customer? I demanded to talk to the manager and thankfully they were able to seat me in 20 minutes or so. Was not happy after that point. I love italian and this is exactly what I was hoping for. Garlic bread was brought to us as soon as we were seated. The caesar salad had just the right amount of fishy flavor. I got stuffed shells that were baked in a vodka sauce. I loved this dish, but it was a little rich to eat the entire plate.
