Solid, bountiful Italian-American dining. FOOD/DRINK - This is not Michelin-guide dining, but everything was flavorful and serviced in good-sized quantities. My Caesar Salad was good, and my Tuscan Pasta was spicy and nicely al dente. Garlic knots, with a plenitude of marinara to dip into, were excellent. There is a good-sized cocktail list, and a fair number of wines; we just went for a carafe of the house red, which was inexpensive and quite adequate. SERVICE: Friendly, if a little scattered and slow to respond. Food was prepped and served in a timely manner. AMBIANCE: The restaurant is huge, and decorated with classical Italian photos and travel posters. Nothing unusual with that. We were a party of seven wedged onto a six-top, which, coupled with the plenitude of glasses, plates for apps and salads and entrees, plus water bottles and wine carafes, made for a crowded dining experience. NET-NET - Having just returned from three weeks in Italy, this is very distinctly what Americans think of as Italian food. But there's nothing wrong with that, and it was all good and filling and flavorful. We've been here in the past as dinner before attending a stage show in Boulder. I love this neighborhood gem! The staff are always friendly and accommodating and I am always greeted with a welcoming smile. I like to sit in a booth when they are available but the tables by the windows are lovely as well. It feels like a neighborhood spot. The food is consistently delicious and fresh. While I often come for happy hour, my husband and I enjoy dinner here as well. The pizzas are a delight and the homemade spaghetti with meatballs-yummy!! This place was nice. The table service was very attentive. We started with the fried calamari. Vwry tasty. Loved the Verde sauce. My husband ordered the linguine with clam sauce. Came swimming in big class fresh cherry tomatoes, and zucchini. Very good. I had the chicken Piccadilly. The breading on the chicken was crispy and the chicken was so tender and juicy. Thank goodness we made reservations for dinner, because the restaurant was packed when we arrived. Not to mention, there was a line out the door, but we were seated right away. It took a little while for the server to stop by our table after being seated, and it wasn't very easy for us to flag him down when we were ready to order and pay the bill. Another staff member actually had to bring our bill because we had no idea where our server was. Not a great impression regarding service. Although I will say, the runners were great. As far as the food goes, I set my expectations super low since I've had a lot of disappointing meals in CO so far. Somehow this restaurant still managed to disappoint us all though. All of our dishes were so bland, with the exception of the salad and garlic knots. The garlic knots were probably the best thing we had during our meal. No amount of salt, pepper, parmesan, or red pepper flakes could've saved the entrees. My pasta was so floppy I could hardly pick it up with my fork, and the marsala sauce was lacking so much umami and other flavors. I could hardly taste the marsala and I personally don't like milk or cream added to the sauce--that's the first time I've had it that way and it's a hard pass. We left probably 90% of our food because it was that flavorless. Maybe the worst Italian food I've had out of all the restaurants I've dined at, in and outside of the U.S. More than $70 for this meal, not including the tip--definitely not worth it! Gondolier Italian Eatery is lot nicer than it looks from the outside. It located in small shopping center on one end and really sign outside basic nothing sticks out. The minute walk inside impressed nice, modern, and upscale vibe to it. The bar area like set up decent size length and tv above, dining room assortment of tables to booths elevated above little bit and feel own space. It decent size restaurant in back enough room they do private party or events. The menu is pretty big and diverse. It defiantly has all your favorite Italian food and daily specials. I ended up ordering penne bolognese. I wanted try garlic knots so got order. They have do have Happy Hour menu. The pasta was delicious and hearty. Garlic knots nice and hot. We had some of the worst service we've ever had at a restaurant. Our waitress only came over to our table maybe 3 or 4 times, we had to go up to the bar to get drink refills, our food was delivered to the wrong table, had to ask the bartender for boxes and the check... the list could go on. We cannot believe this place is still open. Every 5 years or so we forget what a poor place this is. The salads swim in dressing, our son's gnocchi order was just plain wrong (the server blamed the cook) the wine tastes as if it's been in an open bottle too long. For forty years I have enjoyed the good food at the Gondolier. Have always make it a point to eat there during my 3 or 4 visits to Boulder each year. So, a friend and I arrived to have dinner at 8 pm. On Thursday. We were turned away (says open until 9 on Yelp). I questioned how this could be, and was told it just was that way, that they can decide to close when they like. Really? To make it worse, the pony tail employee laughed at us on our way out the door. How things change. Have loved this place, but bad customer service is worse than mediocre food. Sad. read more

What an absolute treat! I have been coming here since the original building was on 28th St. in Boulder. Through the years I unfortunately developed celiac disease and couldn't eat gluten, which made me so sad because I love their homemade pasta although I don't get to eat the homemade pasta. This place is still a gem. My 82-year-old grandmother and I like to have a lunch date. Every few months we used to go to Carelli's but they stopped serving lunch. I was so hungry and focused on the gluten-free that I forgot to order it without any dairy when our server brought it over, I profusely apologized because it was my mistake. He didn't think twice and got me a fresh bowl and also told me that the marinara does have dairy so he chose a different sauce for me. We had a lovely lunch and the ambience was perfect. The music was a little loud for my grandmother, and they happily turned it down just a touch. I can't wait until our next date back here. My only wish is that you could make your homemade fettuccine gluten-free that was always my favorite, but I understand cost and how difficult it is. Well worth the time to get here. The food was great plenty of it. Had enough to take home for dinner the next night. The Spaghetti noodles are all homemade. The sauce was great and plenty of it. The Tuscany spicy thing was very good, plenty of meat and sauce. we decided to try the dessert. The crème brûlée was very good thoroughly enjoyed it. The other dessert we had were cannolis. This was a very strange experience. First, I had a group of people I brought in for lunch. The staff were engaged in a wine tasting, so there was no hurry to seat us. Once we were seated, our hostess went back to the wine tasting and left us sitting for around 15 minutes before taking our dinner order-even though the restaurant only had four other people in it. Once we got out food, it was weird. I am not sure what the dish was supposed to be, but it was not eggplant Parmesan. It was really more like a poorly constructed attempt at an eggplant lasagna with a pitiful side of small dried up spaghetti and what tasted like jar pasta sauce. No one really liked the food. It tasted pretty bland - there was barely any sauce on the pasta and the tiny bit of sauce in the takeout container tasted like watered down white wine. Well, what can I say... at the price for the Tuesday All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Special, if the food was average, I would have been happy. Gondolier proved to be much more than that. This was, hands down, the worst food I've eaten from a restaurant since moving to Boulder a year ago. I was so disappointed, because I was looking forward to some lovely, fresh pasta and I got the opposite. All I ordered was fettuccine alfredo and garlic bread. The noodles were thick and gluey. The alfredo sauce was essentially flavorless - it tasted like there wasn't a single crystal of salt added to it, nor a single shred of Parmesan. It tasted like a cream-cornstarch slurry. What I imagine happened is someone took a large can opener and opened a can of Sysco Alfredo sauce and slopped some on the overcooked noodles. I'm probably wrong, though, because I guarantee Sysco sauce would have some flavor. The garlic bread we got shouldn't have even left the kitchen. It was burnt, hard as a rock, and didn't taste like garlic. The most disappointing part of this experience was paying $50 for something we took one bite of and threw in the garbage. I'll never eat here again and I don't recommend it. read more

We ended up in this shopping center after missing our turn.. I'm so glad we missed our turn and ended up in front of the gondolier. I love Italian food. I guess it might be because it's in my blood.. But I will make up any excuse to justify my love for some good chicken parmesan. The gondolier has a great chicken parmesan sandwich and its huge! I decided on a side of their homemade minestrone soup with my sandwich and it did not disappoint. My honey had the eggplant parm sandwich and was very happy. Strap in, y'all! I have something to say. First, a little background on me that you need to know, so that you can understand my credentials and authority on Italian-American cuisine. I'm Puerto Rican and Italian. My grandmother's maiden last name is Russo. She used to make pasta by hand. My dad and mother met in Bensonhurst Brooklyn when they were kids. Bensonhurst was majority Italian-American until I was about 6 yrs old, so both my parents grew up and lived in an area heavily influenced by Italians. My dad, the Italian half, lived there his whole life until last Oct, where he retired to Las Vegas. I say all of this to say, I have eaten a lot of spaghetti in my 30 years of life. I've even made my own and failed. So when I type this next sentence, it's out of genuine confusion. What the actual heck is up with this place's spaghetti? It's like a chef had an 8 yr old neighbor who has only seen spaghetti in cartoons and that 8 yr old gave the chef a drawing of spaghetti and the chef said "eureka! I know how to set my Italian eatery apart from the rest! I will make the thickest, wonkiest noodles I can and call it spaghetti!" Years later, on a summer day in Colorado, I happen into this Italian eatery. I order the spaghetti, and I don't know what to do when it comes to the table. I eat it, because I don't know how to not eat pasta that's set in front of me. I have always been compelled to eat pasta. And this experience has only proved my theory that even the worst pasta I've ever had is still good pasta, because it's PASTA! Weird spaghetti aside, the service was good, the drinks were good, and the food was decent. Also, heads up, they treat a caprese salad as an actual salad, with like greens and stuff, but with an olive oil dressing. Wait, lemme rephrase that, with olive oil as dressing. I never thought I could say this, but maybe a bit too much olive oil. Again, still decent food. Basically, everything about the food left me confused, but it was edible. I wouldn't be against going again to try other things, but I really don't think it earns the right to be categorized as Italian. I've never been to Italy, though, so I just have my own Italian-American heritage to base this all on. Take from that what you will. read more
