Full disclosure: we visited at 3 PM on Mother's Day. Luckily, we booked a reservation on Resy, or we wouldn't have been seated so quickly. However, the experience started on a bad note. I stood right in front of the host for several minutes before she even acknowledged me. A simple, "I'll be right with you," would have gone a long way. Food-wise, everything was excellent. I loved my steak sandwich--the meat was cooked to perfection on fresh ciabatta bread. The eggs Benedict featured a lovely, delicate hollandaise and was the perfect portion. Unfortunately, the restaurant fell flat on service. Our waitress took a long time to take our order, but looking at her section, she was stretched across the entire room. I really dislike dining at places that are clearly understaffed for major holidays. If I ever return, it will strictly be for the food, definitely not the service. read more

Whoooooo man, do I have stuff to say. First off, I need to comment that Pastis and our server get a lot of leniency because 3 people in our group of 8 were 30 minutes late due to issues with Uber and other small things. But, beyond that, an otherwise "meh" night out food wise. I'm gonna streamline this. - Food: Why is the house steak called "bar steak"? That feels like a weird name for what's supposed to be a moderately upscale place. it's also $30, which is expensive for the area. - My wife's bar steak was ordered medium and it was served Rare. The same was true for a friend who ordered the exact same thing. What the hell? Sure, someone else in our party ordered hers rare, but if a guest asks for medium, cook it like that. My Spaghetti Limone was good, but was in an overly large plate. Also, it had 1-2 shakes too many of the red pepper flakes, and while I didn't mind the spice, some guests are spice sensitive and there was no indication on the menu it was gonna have any spice. We were given bread for the table but my first slice was actually cold to the touch. The bread itself didn't feel fresh. It honestly seemed like it'd just been set in the basket from wherever it was stored. Menu: - A lot of stuff on the menu seems fried (at times semi-heavily), which is not typical of French cuisine (this can be learned with a quick google). If it's meant to be "inspired by" note that. Also maybe make the menu healthier. - The menu itself is non-descriptive and gives an air that Pastis is trying to be classier than it is. Also, the cocktails and drinks menu was just a simple, cheap laminate while the main food menu was a paper one that wasn't taken away and stayed on the table throughout our meal. Service: 1) the server said "oh the non-alcoholic Bordeaux blend, good catch, " when i ordered my drink. She didn't see me point specifically to it either. If you're gonna list a couple non-alcoholic wines, maybe avoid having a regular version of the same variety? Maybe have the non alcoholic version more clearly labeled? 2) Water: our group specified flat water (not sparkling) and every time refills came (we had to ask, no staff clocked that we were low and asked if we wanted or simply brought more) only one bottle was brought and it was started at one end, meaning it was empty by the other end of the table. Why not bring 2? Why not just have bigger bottles? Additionally, because sometimes there is water upcharge in DC, we asked for Tap water. But we had to ask numerous times, multiple people in our group too, as it was never brought. 3) Our server spilled one guests wine on the floor at one point. 4) Our server disappeared for 5-10 minutes at a time, not bothering at all to ask how things were. At one point, when I got up to go to the bathroom, near the end of our meal, she was closing out other tables checks (usual end of the night stuff), which is fine, but there was still like 45 minutes left before the restaurant was due to close. Seems to me that should be done after your party of 8 leaves. We had to flag her or other servers down and Pastis was not busy. Service was inattentive. Multiple people in our party also had to ask for the table to get salt and pepper. When it came, it was just passively dropped off with big "fine, ugh, here it is" energy at the opposite end of the table, while staff walked away. I get it, half our group was 30 minutes late. But that doesn't excuse the apathy and disregard we were given. For a place that tries to be classy, Pastis was whelming. Honestly, don't recommend. read more

I recently went to Pastis for a weeknight dinner with a couple of friends and was underwhelmed by the food. The service and ambiance were both outstanding-our server did a fantastic job answering our questions and making sure our orders had minor requested changes. However, overall the food lacked flavor and needed more. The bread and butter service was the best thing I ate; the bread was hearty with a good crust and the butter was rich and creamy. We shared the potato pierogies which had no taste; they needed a sauce with some acidity and/or a fresh element. I got the beef stroganoff, which was incredibly disappointing. There was barely any beef on the noodles and the little beef there was in the bowl was tough; the sour cream added nothing. We shared the profiteroles for dessert, which were nothing noteworthy. I would recommend elsewhere in Union Market for a meal and other French restaurants in DC if you're craving that cuisine. read more

Dined here during restaurant week on January 24, 2026. I love this restaurant- the decor, music, service and food were fantastic. Definitely come here during Restaurant week to try some of their dishes. They offer some of their regular menu items instead of the pared down RW menus at other places. For starters, the escargot and crab & Avocado was really good. Have to dip the bread into the juices. For the crab & avocado, roll them up in the leaf lettuce. It was great. For entrees, my daughter ordered the salmon and I thought this was the best dish. It was cooked to perfection and love the leeks as it pairs well with the salmon. My other daughter got the spaghetti bolognese and it was another hit. Great dish. Was really surprised how tasty this dish was. I enjoyed my Branzino and my wife liked her NY Strip. It was cooked medium rare. Those fries sure were tasty! Branzino was really good- light dish. For desserts, the stand out was the sticky toffee pudding and crème brûlée. Went to Pastis for dinner with a friend, and this place is definitely a hidden gem in Union Market. One of the highlights for me was the fresh bread -- I loved it so much I kept asking for more. The restaurant is bigger than it looks, and the ambience is super romantic, chill, and cozy. It's a great spot for a date night or a relaxed dinner. I ordered the steak, which was cooked to perfection, and my friend really enjoyed the calamari. I'd be curious to see if they offer a happy hour because this feels like a great place for that. I came here on a Friday night and thankfully we were able to walk in as a party of two. It's a large restaurant but you are seated relatively close to other tables. I had the Fierté Spritz which was quite refreshing and the Eiffel sour which we LOVED. For food we ordered: the escargot, the cheeseburger and the New York Strip steak frites. The escargot was okay. The burger was perfect. The bun was so delicious, something I've never said before. The steak frites were also REALLY good. I'd recommend this restaurant and will definitely be stopping by again! read more

Delicious in every way! I came here for a birthday dinner. Saturday's are crowded. It is probably best to make a resy. We started off with drinks. The espresso martini was good but small. My only complaint. Oysters were great. You can add on more if you need. The onion soup was delicious. It was very flavorful. I like when onion soups are a bit thicker, like a compote. this was like that. Very cheesy too! I LOVED the bar steak. Decently priced and it was a good portion. The chef cooked it a perfect medium as requested. It was tender. They give you so many fries *heart eyes*. They are shoestring. The steak sandwich was really good. Finally had the chance to try Pastis for dinner. It wasn't too busy on a Wednesday night. I loved the intimate, dimly lit atmosphere. Our party of two shared a Caesar Salad and Calamari--both were excellent, with the Caesar being a standout. I ordered the Moules Frites, and the flavorful broth was amazing. A Little Paris in Union Market I'm on a mission to try every restaurant in my neighborhood and what better excuse than Restaurant Week? I was extra happy to see the dates extended because it gave me the perfect chance to check out Pastis--and they did not disappoint! What I loved most is that their Restaurant Week menu wasn't just filler dishes . Sometimes restaurants only offer the least exciting options, but Pastis had a thoughtful selection from their regular menu. I kicked things off with the Eiffel Sour cocktail--unique, refreshing, and just the right balance of flavors. For my starter, I went with escargot. Perfect portion, rich and buttery without being too heavy. My entrée was the branzino served with a green salad + potatoes--cooked to absolute perfection! And of course, I couldn't resist crème brûlée for dessert (my fave!)--creamy, crunchy-topped, and divine. The ambiance is just as impressive as the food. The restaurant is spacious with tons of seating, making it a perfect spot for groups and celebrations. Plus, the bar is massive compared to most in the area--ideal if you just want to grab a cocktail or two without committing to a full dinner. Service was wonderful--our server was kind, attentive, and really knew the menu, even offering great suggestions along the way. The best part? All of this was just $55 thanks to Restaurant Week . The cocktail was on the pricier side, but as a former New Yorker, I barely flinched at the price tag . Overall, Pastis feels like a little slice of Paris in Union Market. Was immediately greeted and seated but we chose to sit at the bar to enjoy the bright area near front of the restaurant since the weather was so nice. Ordered a Caesar salad to share, grilled chicken sandwich with French fries and a breakfast plate. The portions were generous for lunch - the Caesar salad was a bit saturated but the grilled chicken sandwich was good and the fries were crispy and fresh. I had the non alcoholic rose and it was so refreshing and light. The service was prompt until the end when we're waiting for boxes for takeaway and the check to pay (not quite sure what happened to the bartender while we were dining). Overall had a great lunch with good portions. I had a very enjoyable dining experience at Pastis. Prior to visiting, I had heard mixed reviews and comparisons to Le Diplomate, often suggesting it was similar but not quite as strong. However, my experience exceeded expectations. After a brief wait beyond our reservation time, we were seated in a charming corner booth toward the back of the restaurant. We each ordered martinis, which were excellent. For our meal, we shared the steak frites, lemon pasta, and sautéed spinach. Every dish was well prepared, flavorful, and reasonably priced. Union Market has always been my go to since it's just a quick Uber ride away from home. I had forgotten that Pastis was there! When meeting a friend at UM and was told Pastis was the place we'd grab dinner, I was super happy! I was ecstatic actually as I had it bookmarked since January 2024 when they opened! We did not make a reservation and to get a table would have been a 2 hour wait! We looked at the full packed bar and waited until seats opened up. (HIGHLY RECOMMEND RESERVATIONS) Ambiance is casual yet fancy if that makes sense, it's a French restaurant and you can go causal or dressy. Ladies you will not look out of place with a cute dress and heels. They have such a great menu! When I was told the cheeseburger was amazing I smiled big as day! Yes please! My Saturday experience was so good that I had to run it back on Sunday and do happy hour which is all week from 3-5. Sunday they are super slow! Recommend coming then! Let's get into it! Shrimp Cocktail - Great! Cheeseburger- It was delicious! Exceeded expectations. It had a special sauce, onion, and cheese. Super basic burger but it was special! Frites were great! Brunch at this charming French restaurant was nothing short of magnifique. I was able to catch up with my best friend, which made the whole experience even sweeter. We shared the pommes tapées, and let me tell you, those potatoes were next level. Perfectly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and seasoned just right. We also shared the turkey sausage and had it with their French toast. It was comfort food elevated. And the drinks you could tell were crafted with care. I had the M. MARMALADE, a blanco tequila with french amer, orange marmalade, lime and had to go for two it was so good! My friend had the PARAPLUIE and CAFÉ PASTIS (kinda like an espresso martini). About a week ago while we were visiting DC we went with friends to this restaurant. It is one they like and it was our first time there. It is styled on a French bistro both in decor and in its food offerings. Our server, Mohammed L, was personable, efficient and attentive. (Many years ago we lived in the area which has changed beyond recognition for the better.) We first ordered drinks - glasses of a cremant, a Beaujolais, and a Jamesons we perused the menu. We also went through a couple of bottles of Pellegrino. For appetizers we shared a calamari and the Foie Gras Parfait- the latter was one of the best dishes I have had, anywhere. Highly recommended. Main courses included two very good trout amandine, a beef stroganoff and a bar steak with well done (crispy) fries, both of which were excellent. All worth 4 1/2 stars, which is not an option in this rating system. The check for the four of us came to $230 to which I added a $45 tip - expensive but worth it. I'm behind on writing some reviews- this was back June 2024! My husband and I came to DC to visit some family and this was a great place to enjoy our last meal together before taking back off to CA. We were seated pretty quickly for our group of 4 + a baby. We all ordered drinks but can't remember exactly what they were, i remember they came out quickly and we all got another round! Our server was so quick to notice when we needed more water, if the baby dropped a utensil and we needed another. I wish I remembered his name, he was great. For appetizers we ordered the escargot, very buttery and garlicky, oysters which were so fresh, calamari, delicious and the leeks vinaigrette which was so good and light. For dinner we ordered the branzino, the bar steak which comes with fries, duck confit and a chicken pot pie. Everything smelled and tasted amazing. It was about 20 minutes for all 4 entrees to come out. No room for dessert but I wish we could have, hard not to be excited and enjoy such a lovely restaurant like this one. The escargot was so buttery and garlicky - perfectly seasoned. I couldn't stop eating the sauce with the bread. I loved how the french fries were so thin and crispy. It's incredible when a restaurant youve had on your list for a while meets - and exceeds - your expectations! Pastis is the perfect intimate vibe for date night or catching up with a friend. I went on a Sunday evening and it was relatively slow, we made a reservation in advance but i'm sure you could get seated relatively quickly on a sunday night or weekday. I recommend trying their "plat du jour" if you're looking for a special dish! I tried the chicken pot pie and it was one of the most amazing dishes I've had in a while. The crust was flaky, the filling was rich... I enjoyed every bite. The only issue we had was my partner's steak being undercooked, and the table next to ours sent theirs back for the same issue, so that's something to be aware of. The server was attentive and when he found out I was celebrating a promotion, he brought out a little treat which was sweet! I definitely recommend Pastis and can't wait to try more dishes and cocktails next time! read more

I would've gave them a 5 star rating but I didn't really like the potatoes and the music was a little too loud for you to have a conversation without it sounding like you were yelling. The inside is nicely set up and I love the aged scene like an older restaurant but it was nice and clean. The food was fresh and tasty and I also got a waffle that I didn't get a picture of because the kitchen put berries all over it but they did fix that and got me a new waffle. Our waiter was great and he was quick on his feet when it came to our order and what we needed. I will definitely be back to try the lunch menu but breakfast was good. read more

Came back for Pastis' brunch during Restaurant Week. We were lucky to get a table reservation at 1:15 pm on a Sunday when we called in earlier in the day at like 12 pm (luck was definitely on our side). We had mimosas at the bar while we waited for our table and the bartenders were very friendly despite the restaurant being very busy. Once we sat down our server was also so sweet, constantly checking in on us. Now because it was restaurant week I decided to try something new which included their passion fruit scallops and creme brûlée. Both were really good, not sure that I would order the scallops again and my sister ordered the steak tartare and said her stomach hurt shortly after. Now I've had their burgers before so I was excited to get it again. The only thing that wasn't so great for me was the fries seemed overcooked they were super crunchy. Our mimosas were tasty however the espresso martini I was not really a fan of. I still need to come back and check out their pancakes. I was so excited to try the very hyped French restaurant Pastis in Union Market. Right away, the ambiance blows you away with its vintage Paris feel. The service was wonderful, and we were tended to with kindness and swiftness all night. Unfortunately, that is where the positivity ends. The bread basket for the table was full of cold, hard bread. We ordered a Caesar salad, which lacked flavor, and the steak frites, which was incredibly disappointing. The steak came out lukewarm to the point where we had to reheat pieces of the meat with the table's candle. We needed the evening with the sticky toffee pudding, which was very alcohol-forward and sickly sweet. After leaving Pastis, I considered the possibility that I enjoyed it even more than Le Diplomate. Both are owned by the STARR group, so it is no surprise they share the same strengths: high quality ingredients, attentive and efficient staff, beautiful settings, and an overall exceptional experience. At Pastis, I had the steak sandwich and it was excellent, with more fries than I could possibly finish. The space feels like a near twin of the original in New York's Meatpacking District, with mosaic-tiled floors, a curved zinc bar, vintage mirrors with daily specials written across them, and subway tiles that complete the Parisian bistro aesthetic. I believe Pastis will only feel like a hidden gem for a short time before getting a table there becomes as difficult as at Le Diplomate. read more

Came to Pastis for restaurant week and had an incredible time! Came around 7:30 on a Monday. The restaurant was crowded but not packed. You could've likely walked in and grabbed a table but we had a reservation. To drink I had Le Jardin - a light and refreshing cocktail. To start I had the steak tartar and it was awesome! It comes with some bread crisps and is in a mustard type sauce. I don't even like mustard and still really enjoyed the starter. For my entree I had the branzino which was perfectly cooked and super tasty. To finish I had the rice pudding which has rice crunchies on top. Dessert was delicious! So many restaurants scam you for restaurant week but Pastis delivered items actually on their menu at the actual portion size and every one was incredible. I also had the marmalade N/A drink and it was honestly even better than my cocktail, it was incredible! Finished with a cappuccino. Service overall was great and friendly! My cappuccino took a while to come out so they took it off the bill which wasn't necessary but appreciated. Really great hospitality all around. The space is really cute with a great ambience. I try to be very selective on my 5 start reviews, but Pastis absolutely deserves it! We went for a date night on a Monday and have not stopped talking about our experience since. I will start with the vibes. It's was very cozy, with warm lighting and beautiful tile and mirrors on the walls. It was a mix between the decor of Le Dip and The Smith. Vibes were immaculate. Second, our sever Ben. He was the perfect level of attentiveness. Never did we feel rushed, but we also never felt forgotten about. He was kind, helpful, and his timing and cadence was perfect. Last but certainly not least, the food. The food was absolutely scrumptious! Highlights below. Calamari - Some of the best I have ever had!!! Very fresh and soft, not chewy like many calamari are. The breading ratio was perfect and they were nice and crispy. The aioli on the side was also a delicious touch. Caesar Salad - We for a Caesar to split and they brought it out on two plates for us, already split. It made seem small, but I think this makes a restaurant stand out. The salad was crispy fresh and ratios were great. Delicious. Moroccan Braised Lamb - A recommendation from Ben, and I am so glad I ordered this dish! The lamb was packed with flavor and the couscous on the side was so light and airy, and was the perfect side to help soak up all of the goodness the lamb was braised in. Would order again! Le Burger Suprême - My husband got their burger and it was delicious, but probably the least standout item we receive. This place is beautiful. It feel so authentic. No detail has been overlooked. Am I in Paris ( or perhaps NYC). The lighting is amazing. Everything sort of glows. The food is unapologetically French. It's delicious and perfectly done. Their steaks are top notch. The mussels and fritts are perfect and get extra bread to dip in the butter wine garlic sauce. The cream brulee was perfect and so was the sticky toffee pudding. The service staff was fun and knowledgeable and never far away. I went during their happy our today and had a great experience! I was feeling rather peckish and I appreciated that my server (I believe her name was Sukana?) thought my order was rather bold. The staff were warm, the food was hot (when necessary) and it was great to watch the restaurant get livelier as the hours went by. I got the gougères, an order of fries, crème brûlée and the Vietnamese coffee milkshake. The gougères were light and pillowy, the rosemary scent hits you the second you take a bite then the truffle and Gruyère follow through. It was a little strong for my personal tastes but would be great for a cheese fan! The fries were thin and crispy, served with ketchup and mayo. Simple but well executed. The coffee shake was the star of the show for me, I came home thinking about it. The coffee flavor was strong without being overly sweet, I tend to find most cofffee-milk products leaning too far in their direction. Finally, the crème brûlée is one of the best I've had in the city so far. The custard was perfectly smooth without a lump or awkward texture in sight--just melts in your mouth leaving the taste of vanilla. The shallow dish provided the perfect ratio of crème to brûlée and the sugar was layered to perfection. All in all, a great pick-me-up and I hope to be back soon! Only feedback is that they should use a highlighter on the payment link at the bottom of the receipt. I did not realize there was a link because there was no QR code to indicate I would be paying online and was wondering why no one picked up my card until I read the fine print. Highlighting this or adding a QR code would more clearly signal to diners that they're meant to be paying online and not with staff! read more
