Address says Hamilton, but it's definitely the area that's at least bordering Trenton. Parking…read moresituation, one-way streets, stuff in proximity and the locale being pretty close to the river seems to point to that. Kind of felt the need to put that out there, it's not really a suburban location. That said, echoing some of the others I'm reading snippets of, WOW to everything - the service, the food, the ambiance. It's got charm when you walk in, looks old but not dated. The waitstaff is super friendly, has some jokes, multi-talented (they brought out the guitar a few times to wish some other folks happy birthday), and knowledgeable. The food is really good - everything I tried was just delicious. For the table, we ordered some calamari and empanadas, and both were good. Drinks were also tasty - that sangria was really good, and the mojito (love that they had it available, first of all!) was also a hit. I would double-click on that sangria, though. For my entree, I ordered their whole fish, which was not only delicious but HUGE. I ate about half of it and was full. Then my friend and I split an order of limoncello cake (I think that's what it was), which was on point, and ended w/ espresso, also good. Overall, everything about that place was great, and when I mentioned a Spanish place in Trenton the next morning to some guys I was with, one of them asked, was it Malaga? That was just another great review, for a local guy to know what I was talking about just by description. Bravo, I think some of us may be back sometime!

That lobster was fresh, tender, and actually cooked right, not rubbery like you get in a lot of places. Service was dialed in without being overbearing. Drinks stayed full, timing was on point, and it felt relaxed the whole time. The ambiance has that classic, comfortable vibe where you can actually enjoy the meal instead of feeling rushed. Walked out full and already thinking about coming back. Definitely a spot I'd bring people to when I want to impress without overthinking it.

I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

All of the appetizers were great, and can be spilt with friends: -Quesadillas -Calamari -Nachos -Plantain w| Cheese The plantain with melted cheese was such a treat, glad we tried it. If you're looking for the perfect savory, sweet, and non-sweet balanced combination of flavor this is the one! The nachos were tasty, just your traditional melted cheese, ground beef, salsa, sour cream, and guac. The quesadilla's were soft and grilled well (not hard or over cooked). The calamari is not the original smaller squid like pieces with tentacles still attached, it's more so chopped into rings and served with a red sauce. Not sure if they have garlic aioli mayo or not, ask your server. The inside is a vibe, with one side being a full restaurant, and the other side being a smaller room with a full bar, tables, and DJ Booth set up. It's a great place to meet up for dinner with friends! There's music playing inside but not so loud that you can't have a conversation which is great. There is a free parking lot in the back of the building. The menu's are on ipad's which we loved! Enjoy!!

I'm very happy I gave it a try. It was a few miles away but tucked into an area I would have not have known about. The small parking lot was filled so I parked next door at a seedy liquor store. Inside are about 8 tables and a large open kitchen. There are a few options available at a steam table at the front, a few stews and a soup that all looked great, I may just go with one of those next time. While waiting for my to go order I could see the cooks taking pride in their craft. There were a few gringos like me dining in, and the dishes they ordered were plated beautifully. Once home I tore into my guac and chips first. Sturdy homemade chips with a citrusy guac. I just wished the guac had been put into a container so I could eat it later. The chicken tostadas looked a little beat up from the drive but were not soggy and were very well made. The chicken had been lightly charred on the flat top and all the ingredients blended perfectly. A note on the sauces, both red and green were thin ish, but very good. I was surprised that neither were too hot! I had the chicken empanadas for dinner and was again very pleased . These are on the larger size but a bit thin. As I was heating them I could detect a smoky flavor. The filling was excellent. It appeared to be chunks of roasted bird blended with potato, peas and carrots. It came with a separate baggie of shredded cabbage and carrots that I forgot about until just now. I get empanada often, and these were some of the best recent ones. The restaurant also has some sweet treats available in cases at the front, I kind of regret not trying any of those. Customer service was very good and with no language barriers. If this was closer it would probably become a regular stop for me. But I'll definitely return when I'm at the farmers market. 4.5 stars.....
