Dr. Slater is a wonderful doctor who listens, explains, and actually wants to help me. I've been to many specialists in the past two years and Dr. Slater is the only doctor who has actually helped with my head pain, ear pain, dizziness, tremors, vertigo, and tinnitus. I saw three neurologists who didn't even offer to help me with anything related to my POTS diagnosis. Dr. Slater's staff is also the best. Dr. Slater is excellent. He is the first dr. That listened to me. And started me on a long covid protocol. I have been struggling since 2020 after a severe case of covid. He listenened to my history, he explained his treatment plan and after the first couple of weeks i started improving. I was originally happy when I found Slater, because for the first time I had a doctor diagnose my CSF leak. But prior to surgery, he only did one CT scan which was inconclusive and did not show any definitive issue area. Nevertheless he recommended surgery based on what he thought was causing my issues. I was a little apprehensive and called the office twice before surgery to make sure I didn't need any other type of imaging done, and they assured me that they knew where the problem was and surgery would only help me. Felt okay after surgery, and Dr Slater even came in the day after surgery acting happy and showed me a video of my brain he took on his phone during surgery (not sure how I feel about that). After surgery I started developing worse symptoms, which he kept assuring me would get better over time. I kept getting worse, and the original issue was still there. He sent me for a lumbar puncture with blood patch, and I wasn't sure why since my leak was cranial, and even the radiologist thought I should have been having a cisternogram.  I had a few appointments after that, to which he said the new issues I had (I had SCDS) would resolve in time (the only fix for SCDS is surgery!), and said things like "I can't figure you out." I continued to get worse, and At my last appointment he decided to cauterize my adenoids, which did nothing for me except put me in unnecessary discomfort.  I have since found new doctors who just performed a craniotomy for my SCDS and confirmed that there was a huge defect from the surgery Slater did that was causing my issues. read more

Would not even give him 1 star, but couldn't give less. My husband saw him, he was scheduled for surgery and Slater's office canceled, rescheduled and canceled a second time. Have not heard from them since?? Would've thought they'd want to know how my husband was doing? Very poor practice! Absolutely could care less about their patients! read more

In July I had a cerebral angiogram to evaluate possible causes of my pulsatile tinnitus. The results were all clear, but at my follow-up appointment the NIR recalled that Dr. Slater at Austin Ear Clinic was running a study to evaluate a surgical intervention for PT. I was desperate for relief, if not answers, so off I went to another specialist. As the only otologist in Austin, Dr. Slater keeps a rather busy schedule. It took a few weeks to get in for an appointment, but once there I was seen quickly and had in-depth discussions about my condition with both Dr. Slater and Mr. Clark, one of his PA's. Dr. Slater discussed the surgical option, but wanted me first to be tested for intracranial hypertension since it's a contraindication to cranial surgery. Meanwhile, he promised to look over the results of my previous scans. So off I went to a neurologist for a lumbar puncture, where lo and behold I discovered that 1) I did have intracranial hypertension and 2) that was the root cause of my PT. Well cool, no surgery needed (hopefully). At the follow-up visit, we discussed the results and how it meant I couldn't/shouldn't have the surgery, but probably didn't need to anyway. We chatted about surgical methodology a bit and I informed him further on some other cutting edge work being done on the East Coast to diagnose and treat causes of pulsatile tinnitus. It was very refreshing to have a doctor talk to me like an actual intelligent human being rather than just a know-nothing layperson. Reasons for only 4 stars: 1) Even after I got the intracranial hypertension diagnosis back, Dr. Slater (or at least his audiologists) insisted I still come in for extensive audiological/balance testing. That was interesting in its own right, but was still 2 hours of my time and another specialist copay out of my pocketbook. So meh. 2) I didn't get the impression that he'd looked at my imaging studies, just the reports. I was really hoping to have another trained eye take a look at them, since sometimes radiologists can miss something. But, overall a good practice. Busy, but good. read more

Dr. Slater has saved my hearing twice. Once when he removed a growth from my inner ear and once when he repaired my perforated ear canal when another Dr. perforated it, trying to remove the same kind of growth. I realize now that one needs an Otologist who specializes in the workings of the ear. No other Dr.will get near my ear!My hearing is important to me and Dr.Slater's calm and competent manner, always make me feel like I am in good hands. And I have been. Even though he is the only ear specialist in Austin, I have never had to wait at his office.. His assistant Lisa is always on top of things and Dr. Andrew, Taryn, Dixie and Mindy make what would otherwise be a difficult experience a very smooth procedure. Austin is lucky to have Dr.Slater. He worked hard to be able to perform the procedures he makes so pain free. read more

This place is top notch, especially if you have some bizarro condition that has stumped other doctors. They've worked 2 miracles for me now. I've had problems with my Eustachian tubes for 25 years. Thanks to their procedure, my Eustachian tubes now appear to be functioning. They also identified the cause of my pulsatile tinnitus, which was intracranial hypertension. On top of that, they discovered the vascular cause of the IH and referred me to an amazing neuro interventional radiologist that cured me. Dr. Slater and Andrew have changed my life and I am eternally grateful. If I hadn't landed in their office I don't know if I ever would have been diagnosed. Andrew is a PA. I was a quite peeved to find out that my first appointment was primarily going to be with him. My issues were complicated. I was paying for a doctor, a specialist, and they put me with a PA?! Oh, how wrong I was! Andrew is amazing. He is extremely thorough with his questions and looking over all of your radiology images. His sharp eyes found a clue on a 5 year old image that a previous doctor missed. He spends a lot of time with his patients and is great about answering questions and making sure you understand everything. Like I said, my issues were kind of complicated. Andrew pretty much had me figured out by the time the doctor came in the door and then he gave Dr Slater a concise explanation of his findings. He was always spot on and Dr. Slater was in agreement. They have an incredible working relationship that efficient and truly serves the patient. read more

I waited for a month to see Dr. Slater for vertigo. When I arrived for my appointment at 8:00 AM, Liz, the receptionist, informed me Dr. Slater hadn't arrived yet. After a few minutes in the waiting room, I was taken by the tech to be given several hearing tests afterwards, he escorts me to a room to wait for the doctor. After waiting 40 minutes, I finally came out of the room and asked where was the doctor and was he even there yet. Liz comes in and tells me he's stuck in surgery. You couldn't go in and tell me instead of keeping me waiting. She said I could reschedule. I said no, I waited a month for this appointment. Liz said I could come back that afternoon. She called me to come back at 2:15 PM. I asked if Dr. Slater was going to be there for sure (yes). Went back, was escorted to the room again. Waited 20 minutes later, the physician's assistant (Chris) walks in and informs me Dr. Slater is not there and is still in surgery. Why wasn't I told that when I asked if he was going to be there? I grudgingly agree to let Chris do several exercises to help with vertigo. He prescribed medication for motion sickness. The next day I was worse than when I went in, and the medicine was making my head even worse. I called for Chris to call me back. I never received a callback, and I quit taking the medication. I understand when you're stuck in surgery, but the way they handled the situation is applauding. Waste of my time, I'm very disappointed in Dr. Slater and his office staff. Saying that this entire office is highly unprofessional is an understatement. I will not return. read more

Can not say anything about him as an MD but the company he owns Ears and Hearing PA is less than reputable! BEWARE, This place tops the list of bad customer service! I just got off the phone with this place and I see why the ratings are so bad! they should be! They claim to have tested my baby's hearing while he was in NICU sedated for lung problems and he did not pass according to them under no authorization of myself or his mother but by some miracle he passed the same test 5 days later? We did not witness them do either test. Now they want $300.00 since they are out of network working in a in network hospital? Called my insurance BCBS they said they will give me $85 to cover it and they should accept it. But no way they want all $300 they would not accept the $85. Well its been 8 months now good luck getting it now ! I will never do business with this outfit again! read more

I have a long and complex ENT history. My audiologist suggest I seek out Dr Slaters care. Dr Slater is well sought after, so initial appointment was a bit of a wait. However, it was absolutely worth it. Once a patient they can fit you in at a moments tice for urgent matters. Dr Slater, and his team are well educated, knowledgable, considerate, personable individuals. They are always welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble. They give you all the time you need and take the time to review scans, patient history and do an examination. Happy to talk about plan and options, involving you in the discussion rather than talking at you. I have nothing but the utmost respect for this gentleman and his team, from reception, PA's and nurses. You have my vote! read more

For three years, I was a medical orphan. We went from doctor to doctor (15 in all) trying to figure out what was causing me to suddenly come down with daily severe migraines, debilitating sound sensitivity, photophobia so bad I couldn't leave the house, and a host of other mysterious symptoms. My husband and I visited doctor after doctor. No one could figure out what was wrong with me. I was frightened and desperate, and getting worse by the day. Then we came to Dr. Slater and Dr. Andrew Clark, who came highly recommended by a friend. From the moment the office visit started, my husband and I had hope. They are so thorough in taking a history, in going over radiology scans, in playing detective to try to figure out hard cases like mine. We did several rounds of initial testing, which didn't turn up an answer. But Dr. Slater and Dr. Clark sat in the room with me and my husband, discussing hypothesis, asking if we'd be willing to try another route. More testing, more ideas... and then, two months after that initial visit, Drs. Slater and Clark along with an awesome Interventional Neuroradiologist at ARA determined that I had a cerebrospinal fluid leak causing intracranial hypotension, a rare disorder that affects only 5 out of every 100,000 people. After three years, we finally knew what was really wrong with me and how to treat it. In addition to being smart and thorough, I can't say enough how important to me it is that Drs. Slater and Clark were so kind. Everyone in their office treats you with compassion and dignity, and I will always be grateful that they were able to help me. read more

I was recently referred to Dr. Slater by my ENT. I have nothing but high praise for Dr. Slater and his staff. Everyone was knowledgable, considerate and patient in explaining my medical needs and answering my questions. I never felt rushed or had to wait more than 5 minutes to see the doctor. Dr. Slater was very open, patient and thorough in communicating the details of my medical condition and the surgery that was needed. I felt totally confident in Dr. Slaters ability to perform the procedure. Surgery was performed at The Hospital at Westlake Medical Center. I had lost my hearing in my right ear, and needed it fixed to stay in my Naval Program. I came home for the procedure and was sent to him in Austin. He did a hearing test and came to the conclusion I needed a Stapedectomy, which is putting a little prosthesis stapes bone in place of the existing one in my ear. I would spend over an hour everytime waiting for my appointment for him to spend 10 minutes with me and come to a conclusion i needed a ridiculous costly procedure to fix my hearing.. Well I decided to do it.. He failed. My hearing actually declined afterwards, and my Naval career was then over. To my disbelief I was charged over $2,000 for "Surgical Technique"! Are you kidding me? I fully understand the anesthetist charges and others.. This one though I could not believe he would even have the audacity to charge me with. He knew he just ruined my career, and had absolutely no remorse. If I were to see him today, he wouldnt even remember my face or how he forever changed my life. My admit date 5/11/11.
