3 Stars - Decent BBQ, But Room for Improvement Pat's Barbecue 155 W Commonwealth Ave. Salt Lake City, UT 84115 Visited: June 18, 2026, around 3:00 PM This was my first time trying Pat's Barbecue while visiting Salt Lake City. We arrived around 3:00 PM and, surprisingly, were literally the only customers in the restaurant. It's a fairly large establishment, so I'm hoping business picks up considerably during the lunch and dinner rushes. Overall, the meal was decent, but it didn't quite live up to expectations. Our order included two Pulled Pork Sandwiches ($12.99 each), a Classic Burger ($16.99) with Pepper Jack Cheese ($1.00) and Onion Rings ($2.49), plus baked beans, jambalaya, and drinks. The total came to $66.55 before tip. The highlight of the meal was definitely the baked beans. They were flavorful, well-seasoned, and probably the best thing on the table. The pulled pork sandwiches were just okay. The pork seemed a little dry and somewhat overcooked, and the buns could definitely be upgraded. A better-quality bun would have gone a long way toward improving the sandwich. The onion rings were disappointing. They tasted overdone and didn't seem particularly fresh. They lacked the crisp, light texture I was hoping for. As for the service, it was not up to par. With no other customers in the restaurant, I expected a little more attentiveness and hospitality. The service wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't memorable in a positive way. In the end, Pat's Barbecue delivered an acceptable meal, but there were enough issues with the food quality and service that I can only give it 3 stars. If I'm back in the area, I might give it another try and see how it compares during a busier time of day, but based on this visit, it was simply average. read more

Don't come here. I came in to see 3 employees smoking in front of the door and complaining about the band. I walked inside and stood at the podium where it says to wait to be seated. Waited 4 mins and no one was to be found. Finally found a guy in the dining room who said I needed to go to a side room and sit and wait for someone. I waited there for 10 mins and never saw an employee. I got up to walk out and saw two male employees asleep in a side room. Either hire more staff or close down if you don't want to work. read more

Was wanting some BBQ so decided to try Pat's. Was disappointed! Ambiance was weird. Ordered it to go. Before I left, I asked if everything was in the bag. YEP! Got home. NOPE. Called about the mashed potato's & gravy. Went to get the potatoes and said for my inconvenience, throw something good in the bag, NOPE,NOTHING. Got home and realized NO Baked Beans. Wasn't going back. The brisket was dry, chicken not the best flavor and I dont know how the baked beans were, (cause we didn't get them!). Would I go back? I think I will try other places. THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!! All caps because it was so terrible! No service, which I can understand she was busy but it doesn't justify not being friendly with your table after waiting a long time to order and another 25min for food which was sooo COLD! I ordered the 2 meat platter: brisket, pull pork, coleslaw, corn bread and sweet potatoes fried. Everything was so cold I think the coleslaw was warmer than anything else... Been there a few years ago and I remembered being good so for sure they lost their standards .. don't understand the waiting for a table to eat there when it's not worth it!! The food was really good! I've been here twice in 1 month and you can tell it tastes different with how they smoke the meats! But I will say both times to service is extremely slow. I've been to many of the BBQ spots available in the area, and I think so far Pat's is the only one I want time back to. The food was great, the sides were great, the sauces were great, the service was great, and it didn't cost a hundred billion dollars. Be aware that there is live music and thus a little loud Thursday Saturday nights. Now the food. Ribs were just the right amount of tender and lots of flavor, the sausage was juicy and smoky and the brisket was tender, juicy, smoky and delicious. The sauces were all great. The baked beans were FANTASTIC and the fries were actually really good, something I feel like most bbq places don't do well. When you realize you haven't tried any Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in Salt Lake City. Time to change that. Found Pat's BBQ downtown and what a fantastic find for lunch. @guyfieri was definitely right calling them a "culinary gangster". Today's special was burnt ends, just got mine at 12:30 as they ran out after my order. I have never had such tender chunks of Smokey goodness. The portion was huge. Served more like a sliced up pot roast. Meat was the star but the baked beans were a great sidekick with their hearty flavor, mustard forward bite and chunks of meat and peppers. Fantastic meal, served quick and service that did not disappoint. Highly recommended when you are in SLC. read more

Very unique ambiance, I liked it when I walked in rooms kind of hidden around the place. I was there on 5/15 for a late lunch. It wasn't busy, only 2-3 other tables. Service was good, server was friendly and got our food out quickly. We came for burnt ends and then found out the cook didn't turn the smoker on so no burnt ends or brisket. My wife and i both ordered the 1 meat meal with ribs. We got 4 different sides between us baked beans, Mac n cheese, Cole slaw and fries, all were very good. Best beans I have had at a bbq place. However the ribs left a lot to be desired they were tough, I wondered if because the cook forgot to turn on the smoker on if weI got day old ribs. Also I wasn't a fan of the bbq sauces. I was hoping for something a little thicker, these were kind of watery. We also got chips and salsa, don't bother with that. Chips were from a bag and the salsa was not good. It looks like this USED to be the place, but most of the wonderful reviews are several years old, and my experience from earlier this week was just ok. I attended a group lunch and ordered the pulled pork sandwich with baked beans. The meat was plentiful, but pretty flavorless. I added some sauce, but it was really hot-not my favorite. I prefer good flavor to strong heat. My bad, I should have paid better attention to which sauce I was grabbing. The beans were delicious, however. And the service-considering our large sized group-was pretty good. Everyone got their food pretty quickly and their bills at the end. It was probably more of a three-star visit, but I want to err on the side of positivity, so rounded up. But I'm not in a hurry to get back and try the BBQ again. read more

Wanted to love this place so bad! With that being said, the meat itself was great delicious, fairly priced, and definitely the highlight for me. I just wish some of the other parts matched up. For example, why have sweet tea on the menu if it's never made ahead of time? I didn't really want to wait around just for a drink. Unfortunately, the sides were a little underwhelming too. The mac and cheese tasted more like plain wet noodles, and the slaw wasn't anything special. On the positive side, I did really like the fries and the BBQ sauce. Pats bbq was a very mixed experience. They had very quick attentive service; although not the friendliest. Their restaurant layout is pretty interesting where you enter through the back. We were seated next to a sliding barn style door which must have led to some office? Whoever was in there was coughing up their lungs which made the dining experience a bit less pleasant. I had the two meat combo. The brisket left a lot to be desired with it being a bit tough. The kielbasa was fantastic however. The sides were also good. Their special of the day listed corn on the cob but I was informed they do not sell that have that due to price at this time. All in all, I think it was an alright experience. The service here was great. Friendly and quick. At one point we had two servers checking in on our table. The food was ok. I really enjoyed the sausage and fries. The fries were the best part of the meal for me. The chicken, Mac and cheese, and cornbread weren't my favorite. Chicken was a bit dry and the Mac and cornbread lacked flavor. The restaurant is tucked away in South Salt Lake and can be a bit difficult to find. Lots of parking just west of the building in a satellite parking lot. read more

Thought we try this B.B.Q place . The Ribs weren't what we expected, they were St.Louis not Baby Backs, they did have good flavor. The Brisket was like rubber not able to eat it,sadly disappointed. I'm a big fan of excellent BBQ - I've eaten it from the Carolinas to St. Louis and everywhere in between, and I'm pleased to report that Pat's ranks up there with the best BBQ joints I've been to thus far. Tip: Pat's BBQ is slightly off the beaten path; it's situated in a quiet neighborhood and not all that easy to find, but the quality of their food makes it well worth hunting for ;-) When we arrived we were warmly greeted and then seated on the patio without a wait.  They took our drink orders and helped us figure out our BBQ order.  The food arrived quickly; and we were immediately transported to BBQ Heaven!  Everything we ordered on that first visit was excellent, but two things stick out in my memory most strongly - the Pulled Pork and the Brisket. The Pulled Pork was made with an outstanding rub that had a crispy char and just the right amount of smoke; not overpowering, but delicious and subtle.  The Brisket was melt-in-your mouth tender, and seasoned to perfection.  Each table was equipped with your choice of two different sauces; one St. Louis style that's sweet and mild, and the other one Carolina style with a healthy kick to it.  Both sauces are outstanding! The dining area is equipped with picnic style tables, their patio in particular is an outstanding place to eat some quality BBQ - highly recommended! read more

Pat sold the business. No more Pat, no more good BBQ. The ribs are now tough and chewy, but completely cooked, just not the right way. Seasoned to cover up the lack of time in smoke. The chicken might have come from Costco. Tasted about the same, but was a bit more dry. Some of Pat's special sides aren't on the menu any more. A sad review to write. When another Pat's restaurant opened down the street, I mistakenly thought the Commonwealth location closed. I WAS WRONG! I used to get my Caesars salad from a pizza joint down the street, but they were stingy with their banana peppers even though you paid e tra for them. I googled BEST Caesars salad near me, and PATS BBQ on Commonwealth popped up! Not believing my ears, I followed the GPS to a place I thought was gone. OH MY GOSH!! SAME AWESOME ATMOSPHERE!! That day, I got my salad to go. I went in for a Caesars salad last night, and not only can I have it with chicken (as usual), I can ENJOY brisket, or pork or jackfruit! They make a great Caesars dressing. I like lots of parmesan cheese please. The atmosphere is still great. They offer live music. The act last night was a bluesy guitarist. He was good. Music starts at 6:00. I also had the coleslaw cuz what is BBQ without coleslaw? It went great with my salad. The brisket was great. A nice portion with the salad. We stopped in on a Friday, around 5:45pm. We were the only ones in the restaurant and it remained this way during our entire visit. We were quickly seated in the main dining area. Our food server was friendly and quickly took our order. If I was to rate Pats on the service, it's a 5 out of 5. The dining area is decorated with picnic styles tables and designed in a manner that is perfect for what they are serving up and they have a great patio as well. Our meals weren't as good as the service. The chicken was cold and the brisket was tough and full of fat. Our sides were also off the mark, with the beans being cold and the potato salad lacking seasoning and not cooked all the way, so the potatoes were crunchy. The macaroni and cheese was good. Pat's was at one time the hype and must eat venue in Salt Lake. Unfortunately, there are some things that need attention and improvements. Everyone can have an off day and should be given a break. We will have to try it again sometime and see if we can increase the score. For now, it's a three star, with the encouragement of our community to get behind Pat's again and help them climb there way back to the top. read more

This meal was so disappointing. I am a native Texan and was very hopefully to find something similar to bbq back home. The Mac n cheese was not appetizing and had an odd texture and flavor- not cheese. The sausage tasted like It came out of a package. And the brisket was so incredibly dry it resembled jerky- not an exaggeration. I thought about taking it home to my dogs but the dry rub was so overdone, probably to hide how poorly it was cooked.
