Yep, this place is not too bueno. If this is your idea of great chili dogs, then you need some help.

This used to be on my must-do list for out of towners. In years past, they had a motivated crew that made a good dog and fries and made it a good experience. Now it looks like a minimum wage joint where no one really gives a crap and that is the experience. There are too many great choices in town. Go somewhere else. read more

Let me start by saying I didn't wanna do but I'm gonna tell it like it is. I have been a patron of Pats for decades as I've always lived on the west side. It used to be great, fresh hot dog buns, soggy uniquely delicious fries, and decent cheap burgers on toasted buns. All good things must come to an end. The last three visits it is very a obvious the folks in charge are cutting corners. The dog buns are no longer fresh and chewy, the fries are no longer fresh but stale, and the burgers are bland with wilted lettuce. Take at chance if u want but don't say Ignacio didn't warn you. Quality down, prices keep going up. read more

One of the few things I miss about Tucson is the food. Pat's is definitely high up on the list of Tucson 'must visit' places when I go back. I dream about their hot chili dogs and greasy fries. Went to Pat's Chile on Grande for lunch. Waited for about 45 minutes for our order to go through I went back and ordered chili cheese dog with no onion. ( I didn't realize they can with onions) I ordered two chili cheese dogs with no onion. When my order was up I only had one. I told him I ordered two I got eye roll and a sigh and then he said okay I'll give you two and you can have this one for free. Then I reminded him no onion please. Then when I waited another 20 minutes to get one chili dog with no onion.... it had onion!! Ugh!!! I took it back and told him I cannot have onion and he took it to the "cook". I watched them as they looked and picked at the chile dog (with no gloves) he took off the rapper and he got a new rapper and proceeded to add chili to the on top of the same hot dog and gave it to me. I told him I wanted a fresh chili dog made with no onion because I am allergic to onion! Then the person who made the chili dog comes to me and says there's no onion I just made it. I said I watched him, you guys put fresh chili on there. She says again "I just made it" and I said "well I was able to pick onion off of it so it had onion!" she got upset got the chili dog threw it away. She made me a fresh one it took 30 seconds. Well when I got my chili dog I got the window slammed at my face so that'll be the last time we go to chili to Pat's chili dog on Grande!!! read more

25 years ago I used to work in Rillito for a commercial produce cooling company. We would go into Tucson and get chilidogs at Pats all the time. They were great then as I'm sure they are now. I read some of the reviews and some sound like the kind of folk that should not be partaking in the humble chilidog. Not a slam, just an observation. Tucson is lucky to lay claim to the joint. Pat's has been around since my dad was a kid and not much if anything has changed. I know that they are famous for their chili dogs but I rather have a shrimp dinner or just stop by for a box of fries. I once loved the chicken dinner but I think they changed vendors. You should know that there are not a lot of seating options and most people either eat in their cars (with the AC on) or take away. I am also happy to report that they take credit cards now! Finally I don't have to make a trip to an ATM so that I can stop in for a quick bite. read more

Pats is simple. A awesome pile of greasy, classic, stuff your face deliciousness on the cheap. All the Tucson tradition, Classic Tucsonan, etc aside, It good food at a low cost. The drive up outdoor eating is the best. You literally get a massive bag-o-fries with the family meal deal (best thing to get). Great for auto club meets. Our moped club goes there all the time. They always have a smile on their faces, and always leave a smile on ours. read more

Pat's is a Tucson favorite of mine that I've gone to since I was a child. I'm not too fond of hot dogs and never have been, but I will never turn down a Pat's famous chili dog. The parking lot is normally packed with cars coming in and out to pick up their dogs and fries. When you pull up to Pat's it's nothing to look at from the outside, a plain looking drive in with a large, old fashioned neon outlined sign and a simple menu...but you can't judge a book by its cover. The menu is simple but delicious, the staff is always busy cranking out orders in a timely fashion and the place is always hopping. Their spicy chili dogs topped with onions are fresh and mighty tasty and their fries are crispy, greasy goodness that pair oh so well with their chili dogs. Don't feel like eating a messy chili dog at Pat's? Then you're in luck! Pat's packs everything to go so beautifully which is always great if you wanna grab some dogs and fries to take home to the family. If you haven't been to Pat's yet...you better get going! read more

After hearing such great word-of-mouth reviews from friends and family, I have to say I was disappointed by this experience. I didn't need anything special, just chili dogs and fries, but I was treated in a way that seemed like the employee knew their food was so good that they didn't need to bother treating me with respect. I'm not good looking or charming, but I've worked customer service long enough to be patient, respectful and not be a dick, so I was honestly dumbfounded by how my patronage seemed to be more of an inconvenience. I'm sure I'll go back at some point, but now that I'm sober, the chances are pretty damn low that it'll be soon. Still, if you haven't tried them, you should! Just don't expect to feel like your part of something special, because that would be expecting too much. If you like being treated like a number and scoring a decent amount of food for cheap, though, go for it - but avoid the fries. read more

i grew up here in Tucson. Have had chilie dogs in Chicago and New york and will say these dogs are the BEST. You get your hot dog with mustard, onions and either mild or hot chilie. If you are a wimp for heat dont get hot. The french fries are fried up in the back and are the most greasiest ones ever but they are good and if you don't eat them all do what we do fry it up with eggs and steak and make burros with them mmmmmm. The dogs are so good. If you like straight chilie buy it by the gal. and eat it with crackers. BTW get there about an hour to half an hour before it opens if you want it in and out there fast. otherwise prepare for a wait. Its been around for 50 years almost or about and its for a reason. read more

I remember going to Pat's when I first moved to Tucson in 1980, man they were great. Chili dogs excellent and the service was outstanding and friendly. Now all I can say is the food has gotten lousy and the service even worse. The dogs do not taste the same, almost as if a different brand were being used. I for one will not go to Pat's again. I went there with my family. The service was horrible and the food was just as bad. I waited a long time for my food. I ordered chili dogs and fries nothing from the grill. When asked where my food was the girl was so rude to me. I asked to talk to the manager but the manager is the girls mom so my complaint did not get very far. My sister had the same experience with the other manager and her daughter. So much for the customer being always right. The place was not clean at all and most of the employees were standing around talking. I wish Pat's was ran how it use to be ran. The male managers knew what they were doing and made the food taste great and kept the place clean. When the Manager Sam is there the food and the service is good. We've been long time customers there but now sadly we will not be returning. read more

Ah, Pat's - open for over a century. Cash only. There is usually one parking spot out of twelve open. This is a classic place to get a chili dog for $1.59, but honestly not the place you want to take to impress tourists. Is this really the epitome of Tucson? It is a hot dog that reminds me of Costco - mushy bread and hot dog. Beware, the mild is spicy - I know spice is subjective, but on the spicy scale, I would say that you would need a drink with this hot dog. The chili is bright red and has some pinto beans on top; you also can get free onions on your hot dog. This hot dog kept me full for awhile, so I give Pat's props for that. The fries are like grease bombs - more like strings of potatoes than crunchy, crispy fries. The hamburgers are about the same price as hot dogs and are junior burgers. The hot dogs are okay for the price. It seems like locals love hot dogs in general which I find amusing. read more
