Tacos need some work. The fish was fantastic, but the rest of the taco was rough. The tortilla was my biggest gripe - seems like they harden up soft tortillas on the grill, and it ends up being a crusty shell that mostly sucks. This was one of the best tacos that I've had to eat, no joke. Believe the hype because they are the real deal. Don't worry about the price either, it's a small Hawaii island and everything costs more here. Keep that in mind when looking at the cost. The taco serves here are decent portion sized that comes in a crunchy shell that has tons of flavor upon first bite, it really is that good. Don't listen to any of the reviews that give anything below 5-stars. My taco eating bonafides are untouchable and I can tell you this is a top tier taco truck. It's in my top-3 anywhere. Anyone giving a rating below 4 stars are just trying to be "that guy" that poopoo the place to be cool. The Kalua taco was an incredible surprise and the carne asada was fantastic. FYI location moved to Ching Young Village Shopping Center west side of Big Save market due to distraction of Hanapepe Pier area from hurricane over a year ago. Quite delicious food. We have been eating at Pat's for the past 15 years. It is one of the great pleasures of Black Pot Beach, Kauai. We usually get a couple of burrito's with a quesadilla. Excellent with a view of the best beach on Kauai Not sure why people keep marking Pat's as closed. It is not - we just ate there today. Remember Kauai is on island time. I wasn't expecting much but was really surprise how good the burrito and tacos were. The pork is tender, marriage with shredded cabbage. The fish tacos is made from Marlin fish, fresh and moist. The portion is not huge but good enough to fill you up. Price is reasonable considering where you are. Bottom line, Pat's provides hot delicious food right on the beach. Two thumbs up! The menu's small but they're quality items. Service is also friendly and relaxed. We went on Friday at noon and the truck was up and running. I think what makes it is the quick dunk of the tortilla into the deep fryer, it made the taco have a distinct crunch which was oh so enjoyable. We got the fish tacos (great and refreshing, terrific salsa), carne asada (tender, flavorful, great marinade), and cream cheese jalapeno quesadillas (spicy but great). A gem in Hanalei. read more

Pat's is a food truck that has a few options for tacos and burritos. My personal favorite is the carne asada taco. It keeps me coming back year after year. FINENESS! Great Mexican food on the island of Kauai! While not the Mexican of San Diego where we're from, this place has some awesome Kalua pork in their tacos & burritos that make them totally worth the stop. Beef & fish tacos/burritos were also quite tasty. Quesadilla with jalapeño cream cheese was unusual, but delicious. The best fish tacos I've ever had in my life!!!! The salsa they make is so amazing and this is what make the taco so amazing. It's worth the price and it's right next to Hanalei Pier. I'm from So Cal and I dream about them sometimes. In my opinion and comparison, way better than "Tropical Tacos" and "Wahoo's"! "Tropical Tacos" was way too expensive and they pack on way too much cheese. Their tacos lack the fish and there was no taste :-( I also recommend the cream cheese jalapeno quesadillas @ Pat's. The hours are kinda wacky though and are only opened 3 hours during the day and closed on Sundays I believe. Sometimes I'd miss the taco van by 5 min and have to wait until the next day. I think it's like noon-3? But not sure, I would def. check or ask the local's! One time, I missed it two days in a row so get there right at noon! The best thing is to top it off with a hawaiian shaved ice over macadamian icecream across the way at the shopping center. Oh I'm dreaming... i will return very very soon. Drove by for lunch after spending the morning at Tunnels Beach (highly recommend, by the way) What I don't recommend is the carne asada burrito from here, however. It definitely is not the best carne asada I've ever had. It tasted like they used packet taco seasoning and they cooked it with onions and green peppers, so more fajita-style than actual Mexican carne asada. I'm actually super annoyed by the amount of reviews on here that said it was "the best they ever had" or even remotely good. They must've never had real carne asada before. My boyfriend and I also each had a fish taco. The fish taco was much better and they fry up the shell a bit so it's nice and crunchy. I prefer fried fish for my fish tacos but the crispy taco shell made up for that and the pineapple slaw/pico de gallo they put on it is pretty tasty. read more

Thank God for Yelp--we stumbled upon this taco truck while on our honeymoon in the north part of the island! If I could get on a plane now just to get more of Pat's tacos, I would. Which brings me to Pat's Taqueria, a trailer in the parking lot adjacent to Hanalei Bay and an easy stroll from your beach towel. Pat's, too, would be difficult to improve upon were it anywhere else and then, to find it in one of the most perfect places on Earth? Well, God has surely smiled down on you today. I can't understand why this taco truck garners so many yelp stars. Yes, the location is ideal. My only thought is that people are so hungry after a day at the beach, they are ravenous and thinks this fare is great? Dry grilled fish on a greasy tortilla with a tiny sprinkling of pico does not make a great taco. The pork taco was significantly better but needed salsa desperately and again on an oily tortilla. WOW, wow! The tacos are probably the best tacos I ever ate. One of the chefs on the Food Network needs to mention this on the "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" show. We came around 2:30pm and were lucky to get some food. They're only open from 12-3pm (or until they run out of food) Mon thru Sat. They were already out of the fish tacos - locals' favorite. We were able to order: CARNE ASADA TACO ($4) - 5 stars Flavorful and juicy meat in a corn taco paired with salsa. The meat is marinated in teriyaki sauce and chili powder, which makes it rich and tender. KALUA PORK TACO ($4) - 5 stars The shredded pork was paired with cabbage in a corn taco. It was super flavory and juicy, mellowed by the cabbage. Both tacos were tasty. It's no wonder Food & Wine and TIME magazine praise the food. It's freakin' awesome. There should be more reviews from Yelpers, but then I guess it won't be the local's secret gourmet-food truck by the beach anymore. read more

A surprisingly good taco truck that serves fish, carne asada and kalua pork tacos and burritos. The stand is next to the Hanalei pier so it's a bit out of the way. However, it doesn't appear to be a secret by the crowd we encountered on both our visits. The carne asada is probably the most tasty but also little on the greasy side. The grilled fish is probably ono and on the more standard side. The kalua pork tacos are something new and interesting. The pork is tender and moist and is quite delicious wrapped in a pair of grilled corn tortillas. Overall, Pat's Taqueria is a nice alternative for a quick and fast meal on your way to or from hiking or snorkeling on the north shore. read more

Thanks Yelpers. We never would have found Pat's on our own because there shouldn't be any restaurant down a small road by a small beach, blocks away from the main drag. But there is. OK, this is food stand, but it is a damn good food stand whose food exceeds that of most restaurants on Kauai. We almost DIDN'T find it. I think it was Google maps that had it wrongly located about a block away, but we stumbled across its actual location anyway and are very glad we did. The first thing I did was to ask if they had crunchy tacos, because many taco places use soft shells only, or at least by default, and my preference is crunchy. The woman behind the window told us that the tortillas were fried, which resulted in a sort of hybrid shell -- not exactly crunchy but not soft. Hey, good enough; should at least be different and interesting! They had two specials that day, one being a shrimp taco which had sold-out, and the other being a chicken mole taco. We lamented the loss of the shrimp tacos, which sounded great, and I hesitated to try the chicken mole because often "specials" are un-tried experiments and are therefore not very good. The other reason was that a mole has to be really good in order to complement and not overpower the chicken. We played it safe and ordered a fish taco and a pork taco with a side of beans and rice. They both were really good. I think I may have liked the pork taco a tad more. But in fact they were both so good, and I was still hungry for more, that I just had to take a chance on trying that chicken mole taco too, my previously-stated considerations notwithstanding... so I went up and ordered one after we finished the others. It was worth the wait. The mole sauce was unlike any other I have tasted... Just right for the chicken. Very tasty! Unfortunately they said they probably wouldn't have them on the menu again. I asked why, and Pat said it was way too much work for just offering another kind of taco -- better to stick with the usual menu. He also offerred that the recipe for the mole was from Rick Bayless, so I will definitely be hunting *that* down at some point! My point is that I wouldn't be hesitant to try anything on Pat's menu, regardless. He obviously knows his flavors and puts a lot into the preparation of the fillings. One side note: In looking back at my photos (yes, I am a food picture-taker) it looks like they fry a bit cheese into the shell -- I don't recall seeing this when we were eating it though; can anyone confirm/deny this? Maybe I was too focused on eating. :) Definitely do try this place if you at all like tacos! read more

That's got to be the best job in the planet. And I know they make more money than me. I have a BS and MS in engineering from very respectful university in mainland. FML. Carne Asada. Holy Cow. Can a taco get any better than this? My church bible study sometimes play ice-breaker where we tell the best food we've had so far. I know what my answer is now: Pat's Taqueria in Kauai. My husband and I went here on a good friend's recommendation. I did no research and we went on a whim. I am so glad we did. I didn't realize it was a food truck situation until we got there but who needs a building when the location is so stunning. You wouldn't want to sit inside anyways. The food was delicious. We tried one of each type of taco. The pork was my favorite. They had a selection of fun hot sauces but I didn't try those because I wanted to taste the tacos as they were. Pat's is a hidden gem. Good quality but the prices are way too much for the size of food you get. I was charged $16 for two tiny kids quesadillas with pork. They had a lot of cheese hut very little meat and the quesadilla was very "porky". Not worth $16 read more

We were referred to Pat's taco stand by a local. The story goes that Pat was a chef working for one of the high-end hotels and decided he wanted to open up his own little place. The taco stand/trailer is open only from noon to 3pm (not sure about weekends, so try to go during the week). Pat serves up a simple menu of tacos and burritos with your choice of beef, pork, or the catch-of-the-day fish he imports from one of the larger islands (we had swordfish that day). He also offers a jalapeno cream cheese quesadilla that's wonderful, too. The tacos are $4 for the beef or pork, $5 for the fish, $7 for the burritos, and they're soooo worth it! I easily downed two of the tacos and could have eaten another. My sister-in-law, who is a tiny thing, ate four of them all to herself because they were that good! Pat's Taqueria is located in the sandy parking lot right before the pier. You just can't miss it. read more

The most unassuming food truck boasts the most flavorful Mexican food I have had in a long while. "Eat Tacos" it states: pretty much the only decoration. I'm a rebel though so I decided to try the fish burrito. It was delicious- charred, grilled fresh fish with veggies and rice and the perfect amount of a unique white sauce. Usually fish burritos are served with way too much slaw-like filling but this one was great! The portion was not huge but the perfect amount. The staff was friendly and efficient! In addition, the location can't be beat. Beautiful, scenic Hanalei Harbor is a gem in Kauai and this delicious food only helped make our experience better! read more
