This response from Dr. McAndrews includes several false claims about me, including the accusation that I was "under the influence of something" and a supposed "safety threat." These statements are untrue. I was calm, sober, and respectful during my brief visit -- just emotional because I've been coping with alopecia and seeking help. I do not use alcohol or drugs for religious reasons, so that accusation is completely false. I had only stopped by to ask about scheduling and to fill out the application in advance to save time before an appointment. When I became tearful and briefly turned my back to wipe my nose, the already impatient receptionist, suddenly got up and went to get the doctor. Instead of showing empathy, he told me he didn't take insurance and that the consultation was $150, then dismissively said, "come back when you have the money" after reprimanding me just for crying over the ongoing situation with my hair which affects my self-esteem and self -worth. His response also contradicts itself because he is mentioning that I was wearing a beanie and that I had messy hair which calls into question his accuracy. I would also like to add that his Healthgrades profile, which is marked as claimed by the provider, lists Blue Shield of California PPO as accepted and highlights "friendly staff," "good communication," and "good patient care." Unfortunately, my experience reflected none of these qualities and lacked the compassion expected from a physician who has taken the Hippocratic Oath. I have PPO insurance and have been a patient of Huntington Memorial Hospital since 2016, long before it merged with Cedars-Sinai. I have long-standing care through Huntington Memorial and other licensed providers who can confirm my medical history and conduct. After botched hair transplants by Bosley and another provider who is no longer in business, I was forced to wear hairpieces for 25 years to hide the scarring and the obviousness of the transplants. 22 years ago, I consulted with Dr. McAndrews, but opted for a procedure with New Hair Institute because NHI was a lot cheaper. Didn't tell me what went wrong until months after surgery, and by then he suggested that I get another transplant procedure with him (to make up for what was not done properly in the first place). Dr. McAndrews was out of the way and I had to schedule enough time to go to his office. IT WAS SO WORTHWHILE! I am thrilled that I was able to see him and have him evaluate my scalp and hair loss. He told me the truth, unlike another hair transplant place that I had visited. I wasn't a good candidate for a transplant because I didn't have sufficient follicles to transplant and I wouldn't be happy with the results. I am a 77 year old white male with thinning hair. Last week, I had 2,100 follicular units of hair transplanted from the back of my head (strip method) to the thinning area. Dr. Paul McAndrews in Pasadena, CA. performed the surgery. The sutures were taken out this morning. This is a summary of the actual procedure and why I chose Dr. McAndrews. I will update this in 4-5 months once the transplanted hair has started to grow and one can begin to assess the quality of the procedure. THE PROCEDURE The surgery was a 'nothing.' It lasted from 7 a.m. until about 2 with a 1/2 hour break for lunch. I didn't watch a movie. I didn't listen to my music. I didn't need a bathroom break. I sat and listened to the classical music they had on. My head was numbed. Dr. McAndrews took a centimeter wide swath of hair from my donor area. His technicians then dissected the hair into follicular units and then into those with 1, 2, 3 and 4 hairs. Meanwhile, Dr. McAndrews placed some 2,000 micro-slits' on the top of my head - approximately 20 per square centimeter. Then Dr. McAndrews and his head nurse, Millie, inserted the individual follicular units according to the plan he and I had agreed upon. I felt no soreness of pain during or after the procedure. A week later (i.e. this morning), the sutures were removed. Although they prescribed medication for sleep, pain and anxiety, I took none because I didn't have any pain, swelling or anxiety and I slept well. The day after the procedure I returned and they cleaned the donor area sutures and showed my wife and I how to take care of the suture and grafted areas. They covered the grafted area with Telfa pads covered with Vaseline. My wife did all the post-op wound care. Twice a day, she would clean the sutures and apply Vaseline and then would remove and replace the Telfa pads. With the pads removed, she would spray a saline solution to keep the area moist, put a little Vaseline on new Telfa pads and place them on my head. We have a stretchable swim cap from Coolibar that we then put over my head - it kept the Telfa pads in place. The use of Vaseline, Telfa pads and a beanie cap allowed me to sleep regularly and without having my head raised. Now I just wait 4-6 months :-) WHY I CHOSE DR. MCANDREWS My wife and I had in-person consults with three California doctors - one in San Diego, one in Irvine, and Dr. McAndrews in Pasadena. We had discussions with two others - one in Atlanta and the other in Phoenix. We chose Dr. McAndrew because: 1 He was recommended by a doctor whom I respect and admire and who is triple board certified - Internal Medicine, Dermatology and Plastic Surgery. 2 His website is well laid out and provides a good sense of his background, his approach to hair transplantation, and useful testimonials not only from prior patients but from other physicians - that says lot. 3 He is Board-Certified Dermatologist - understanding the scalp and hair growth is the key element of hair transplantation. 4 The use of Vaseline on the transplanted area instead of simply using saline spray all day makes sense as keeping the graft moist and protected quickens the healing process and increase the number of grafts that end up surviving. It also allows one to sleep in a normal position, not sleeping with the head significantly raised. 5 He holds the highest level of distinction - Fellow and Diplomate - in the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery - the two leading hair restoration groups. His involvement includes writing the exams used by both organizations for certification of other hair restoration physicians. 6 He has a small boutique-type practice and still practices 'regular' dermatology - he does only 1 procedure a day - he performs all the surgery and has worked with the head nurse for over 15 years - he charges a small initial consult fee and his 'per follicular unit" cost is on the high end. For us, these were all good signs. 7 It was important to him - and me of course - to be crystal clear on what the hairline would be and where he was going to place the donor hair! 8 In TV interviews- can be viewed on his website - he exuded a quiet confidence that if he did a transplant, it would look natural and undetectable as a transplant - ultimately that is what we all want. 9 He has worked as a consultant for Pfizer and Merck on hair loss. read more

Two years ago, I spoke with Dr. McAndrews about hair implants. He explained the hair transplantation process but he could not guarantee anything. I had several conversations with him and his staff, Jessica & Millie, before deciding to have the surgery. They were not at all pushy. Before surgery day, they gave me all the supplies I would need after surgery and make sure that I understood exactly what was going to happen during and after surgery. The surgery room was very clean. My surgeries were not painful - I just had to sit still for a long time. During surgery, I was completely relaxed because I knew that Dr. McAndrews would handle anything that came up. After surgery, they served me a nice lunch and I drove home. The week after surgery, I had to cover the implants with Vaseline - I stayed home for the week. After a few months, I saw the implants growing new hair. I was so happy that I told Dr. McAndrews that I wanted to have another surgery. He said that I had to wait a year - he wanted to see how the first set of implants turned out. I saw him a few times during the year - everything was going well. So, I had a second surgery and the results were again very good. So, it's been two years since I started this process. I am very happy with my results and am very grateful to Dr. McAndrews, Jessica and Millie for all the support they gave me. I am also in the medical field. I went to Dr McAndrews after I got stitches after cutting myself while cooking, because I thought the wound seemed infected. My primary care doctor did not think so and wanted to wait and see. Taking matters into my own hands, I went to a specialist (dermatologist) to see what he thought. I found Dr McAndrews on zocdoc.com which I thought was convenient because you could view and schedule appointments online. Dr McAndrews saw me for all of 5 minutes. He did not listen closely to how the wound came about and the time frame and why I was concerned (the redness started AFTER the stitches were removed). Instead he had already decided within a few moments and a quick glance that it was just an inflammatory healing process and promptly injected me with steroid into the lesion before I even had much time to object. A few months later, after going to an infectious disease specialist and another dermatologist who performed the correct diagnostic tests, I am finally diagnosed with a Mycobacterium (slow growing bacteria) wound infection. I really try not to write bad reviews, but the experience I had with Dr. McAndrews was upsetting. He was one of the most arrogant, curt, and disrespectful doctors I have ever come across. My session with him was almost comical. He interrupted me in my first sentence stating, "We want a diagnosis, not your opinion!" (Never mind that I was trying to tell him another doctor's diagnosis.) He tried to prescribe me two drugs that lower your blood pressure and when I repeated my concern that I already have low blood pressure, his exact words were, "I don't care." He also went on a tangent about the many stressors Ronald Reagan faced (you can't make this stuff up, kids) and how it didn't impact his hairline. But my favorite was when he said not once but twice that I could "make him richer." Run, don't walk away from this place. I have no doubt that he has some talent and expertise in his field, but there are plenty of other specialists that will make you feel like a human being in their office. These specialists should remember that when people come to them, they are often in a vulnerable state. A little compassion goes a long way. On the bright side, the receptionist and the rest of the staff were lovely and very professional. read more

This "dermatologist" was very rude and at one point referred to me as an old man, which granted I am (74 years old) but his approach was very unsympathetic. First of all, he didn't help me at all and prescribed a cream. Secondly, he talked and talked "Over me" all the time, without ever giving me a chance to explain my case. I will certainly give him a miss in the future. Rude, talkative, unsympathetic, and insulting to an "old man". I don't know if this review will make any difference, but at least I am able to share my frustrations. However, I could barely move to get out his office and back to my car - the pain was unbearable. This guy's total lack of interest or concern in my plight was stunning. I was disgusted that a so-called health professional could be so utterly crass. I had previously had a few appointments with him before that and I got the impression that he couldn't get people through his office fast enough. He strikes me as being interested in one thing only - money. I am not in the least bit surprised there are other extremely negative reviews of him on Yelp.
