Classic wines by passionate winemakers! The 2016 Umpqua Valley Pinot Noir I'm currently drinking (good luck finding a bottle) is a classic! This baby has been sitting in my cellar for two years and today is a special occasion (I wanted to sip a good wine). The classic notes of black cherry open to perfection. Behaved acidity and truly silky tannins make this a wine you want to keep savoring. 95 points and I'm being stingy). If only Dyson and Scott would put actual tasting notes on the back label rather than the tripe some marketing consultant talked them into. Fortunately that does not detract from this outstanding wine.

The gentrification of Roseburg, I fear, is coming, yet I hope not. The Umpqua Valley has attracted some fine grapes and lovely vineyards, and Paul O'Brien sources from 8 of them. Paul O'Brian tasting room and winery is located one street over from the heart of old town Roseburg, a quaint, small one-street wonder that has already surprised us twice with good, trendy restaurants. So we keep coming back. On one such visit, we saw this large, renovated red brick building with a bold winery sign. Curiosity got the better of Mr. B, and then next thing I knew, we were schmoozing with Linda, our pourer. You will not get the experience of driving through hills and valleys covered with picturesque vineyards. The tasting room is a converted red brick warehouse that is adjacent the old railroad tracks from the last century. It has been completely modernized and is now a stunning, welcoming escape. The tasting room portion has two components, the huge tasting counter and an inviting lounge area with dark leather covered settees and chairs. To your right through the double doors is the barrel room where the smell of all the lovely fermentation going on comes from. It was most auspicious that Linda was our pourer. While engaged in conversation, I had a very strong feeling we had met before. And indeed this proved to be true, we had met 6 years earlier at Arbecela Winery, also in Roseburg. The main reason I remembered her was she was a fellow taster, who happened to be a very attractive, knowledgeable professional chef. She had graciously shared with us her favorite Roseburg cafe. We had taken her advice and had a very memorable lunch that day. This coincidental 2nd meeting in 2018 was just as fun, as she continued to impress us with her food and wine knowledge. But this time she was across the counter from us. The final tally for this visit was: A 2015 Muscato @$18, a 2015 Ostion Riesling @$26, and a Gewertztraminer (which I no longer see on their website). They were all exceptional. We look forward to remembering this little winery as we open our bottles. The final piece de resistance, and the reason we hit Paul O'Brien's twice this last trip, was to get two Reidel wine glasses etched with their name, free with our purchases. Yes, Mr. B loves getting stuff for free. But he was just as tickled they had wines he loved.

This winery is located in the downtown area of Roseburg in a converted car dealership. There is an incredible parking lot located in front. When you walk in you pass by the holding tanks and fermation process. Then you enter the tasting room which is very tastefully decorated. Across the grand room is overstuffed furniture for conversation and socializing. They also offer winery t-shirts and other items. The wine is maturing and is pretty good, should be even better in a couple years. We did like the sangiovese and grenache and purchased one of each. Personally I'm not a huge white fan unless it's a hot day. Reds are my go to and when wanting to wine taste. I wanted to taste only reds...its my day and I'm going to color it my way. The server Linda was a little put off that I didn't want to go down the lines of sweets and whites then reds. But we got past that and had a good conversation and enjoyed our time. I do recommend this winery and when I'm back in the area will definitely stop in!

In an industrial area. It used to be a car dealership.

Date of visit August 13, 2017. I loved this winery! On the way from Bend to the Oregon coast, at the end of highway 138, is the town of Roseburg. We Yelped and found this highly rated winery and decided to stop for a wine tasting break. If you drive too fast, you could easily pass Paul O'Brien's. It is located in an industrial looking site. Before the owners converted it to a winery, the site was a car dealership. Walk inside and you will find their production room. Walk through the wooden doors and you will find a very nicely decorated wine tasting room. It is airy, contemporary, and comfortable. Linda was our server. She was very informative and knowledgeable. The name Paul O'Brien came from the two owner's middle name. Grapes are all out sourced from Oregon vines. Moxy, established before the owners laid down their stake in Oregon, are made with California sourced grapes. All of the wines I tasted here were very good--all agreed with my palette. This was a well worth it stop!

Some selections from our visit yesterday.

5 Stars - A Perfect Anniversary Getaway!…read more My wife Tiffany and I stayed at the guest house at Cooper Ridge Vineyards over the 4th of July weekend for our anniversary, and we had an absolutely wonderful time. The guest house was spotless, very reasonably priced, and gave us the complete run of the vineyard once the tasting room closed. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The property offers both 1- and 2-bedroom options and has gorgeous views overlooking the North Umpqua River and the vineyards perfect for morning coffee or evening wine on the patio. Steve and Paula, the owners, are wonderful, warm people who were incredibly accommodating and made us feel right at home. Their wines are superb, especially the pomegranate sparkling wine, which quickly became our favorite. We also loved the complimentary charcuterie board! The guest house was well-equipped with a washer and dryer, iron, full refrigerator, coffee maker, and plenty of dishware -- everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Located in beautiful Douglas County wine country, it's conveniently just minutes away from many other wineries, making it an ideal base for exploring the Umpqua Valley. Do yourself a favor and book a stay with Steve and Paula at Cooper Ridge Vineyards. You won't be disappointed!

We didn't have a reservation, but we lucked out on scoring a table. It was away from the live music, but you can still see/hear the band. What was so breathtaking was that gorgeous view! I wasn't feeling well that day but the view was a total zen vibe! There's an inside bar area, ample seating outside. It's best to get a reservation or get there early for the outside tables. Restrooms are inside, parking is on the vineyard. The day we were there, they had a taco vendor for food. Overall, this was one of our favorite wineries to visit and hope to be back when we're in the area.

They have an extensive wine list; so my husband and I each did a tasting of 6 ($10), and then ordered the smoked salmon plate ($25). We then took a seat out on the terrace overlooking the beautiful winery and vineyard. Not long after we were seated, we were served our wine flights and salmon plate. Let me first say that the smoked salmon plate was beautifully presented and very delicious. The salmon was tender and moist, accompanied with cream cheese and a wonderful pepper jelly. Oh, so good. My wine flight was mostly whites. My favorite tastes were the sauvignon blanc (not a typical suave blanc, less acidic with a smooth finish); the chardonnay, and the rose. But I enjoyed all the wines I tasted. Also note that they have a small gift shop with some very cute items. I'm so very glad we came here. Great staff, great views, great food and great wine. We will definitely be back again next time we are in the area.

I saw a post on Facebook about this winery. Finding it wasn't easy, but it's surely worth it once…read moreyou get there. It's in the group of buildings across the road from Kruse Farms. You have to go down the road a ways to find the gate in the fence to get in. But it's there. Trust me. Once you get there and meet Scott & Jennifer Henry, you'll want to stay a while. This is an outgoing couple that's passionate about their wines and about growing succulent house plants. They are very good at both. They have no vineyards of their own, but buy grapes from growers across Southern Oregon. They feel this arrangement allows them to get grapes from many different regional climates and greatly expands the variety they have to work with. And not tending a vineyard gives them more time to devote to wine making. Their results are impressive. For Rose, we took home a bottle of 2013 "Transparency", a white blend of 57% Muller Thurgau, 28% Muscat and 15% Riesling. Delightfully fruity, slightly sparkling, slightly sweet. For me we got the 2012 Syrah, actually a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache, a very interesting raspberry and spice experience. If the tasting room is a bit hard to find and keeps short hours, it's okay. You can find their products on some local grocery store shelves, including Sherm's Thunderbird in Roseburg. It has been a year since I've been to the Parrot House and wanting to try their reinstated buffet…read more I like a buffet where you can try different foods. I really wanted to like this place because it's the one fairly fancy place in town...but, it was a disappointing experience. We got to the restaurant for our 10am reservation but the door didn't open until exactly 10. People huddled under the porch because it was raining fairly hard. We were shown inside, then back outside to another room to our table. We ordered and they said the buffet was in the tent-outside. So, coat & rain hood back on to go to the buffet. Unfortunately, the buffet wasn't ready so we went back to our seats. The buffet wasn't ready for around 20 minutes-because some of the kitchen crew called in sick so they were operating with less help. The remaining crew was working hard to get it set up. So they were doing a good job-they just needed more help. The buffet had: Eggs, Potatoes, Bacon, Sausage, Biscuits & Gravy, Jalapeño Cheddar Bagels, Smoked Salmon, Salad, Dressing, Potato Dill Soup, an Omelet bar and Prime Rib. Unfortunately, most of the food we got wasn't warm. I think the top of the chafing dishes were able to cool off, even though, the bottom was hot. Didn't know that until going back in. Thats a dangerous situation where bacteria can grow. The bread was excellent. It was a chewy Italian bread. The butter balls were firm so hard to spread. There were bagels and smoked salmon but it would have been nice to have something other than just jalapeño cheddar bagels for the smoked salmon. Maybe, get something more neutral in flavor that more people would eat. I think I have fairly normal tastes and love biscuits & gravy but the biscuits and gravy had an odd flavor to me. I wasn't a fan but that may be a preference. The prime rib was ok but not terribly tasty. The Potato dill soup was just ok, too. The omelet bar probably was the safe choice since you pick your ingredients but I make those often at home so I wanted to try other things. I think they are trying to be fancy instead of just making good food that everybody would like. Service was good. We did have to wait for coffee but overall they were nice and did a good job letting people know when the buffet was ready. Overall: Ambiance is 5/5; Service 4/5, Food-the temperature, late food and having to walk in the rain to the tent and back with a plate of food while getting rained on drops the overall score to 3/5. Opening that heavy door with a plate of food is a problem, too. Maybe have the tent right outside the entrance to the main dining room so your customers and their full plates don't have to be out in the rain. There has to be a better way.
