You've probably heard of the Schat's legacy from going to Mammoth or Bishop. Paul scat is Eric's son who owns the one in Bishop. His bakery is in Carson and that man can bake! I've been coming here since it opened and it never anything that was even remotely sub par. Every bread, cookie an sandwich I've had has been nothing but excellent. I recommend everyone to come here if they're on their way through. Sometimes it takes a while to get your food just because it's so busy because it's SO good! A true Carson City gem. P.S. Don't be surprised if you walk out a few pounds heavier than you came in... this place is unbelievably tasty and I am warning you to keep yourself under control. I want to try everything in the bakery! I had the tiramisu and it was to die for! They have very good coffee as well. My coworkers got a chicken sandwich which was delicious and Snapple cranberry salad which is massive and very appetizing. I started to drool while watching her eat it. We stumbled upon Schats bakery, one afternoon coming home from Tahoe. We were searching for a sandwich shop, and didn't want the usual places. It's a little off the beaten path. But is easy to get back on the beaten path and has decent parking.... So it's worth it! The coffee part of Schats it lovely! My hubby always orders a mocha (sometimes frozen sometimes not), and says ..."it's a real mocha, not that fake crap other places make". Since I don't drink coffee, I don't really get it, but in sure the mocha snobs in the world do. So for you mocha snobs..... It's a real mocha. I always get a chai(sometimes frozen, sometimes not) it's consistently fabulous! Not watered down! Not to sweet! Just right! Now on to the bakery part of Schats...... HOLY MOLY!!! They have some amazing baked goods!! I mean really really amazing stuff!! Their counter is full with delicious treats ready for the taking!!! They win the bakery award for sure!!! And their baked goods don't just reside behind the counter! The front of the store is covered with breads and treats to buy and take home. And they have hot food also! And it's fantastic!!! They get their meet from a local rancher and it's wonderful!!! The hubby loves the burger! I always order the French dip!!!! Oooh you need to order the French dip! It's fantastic!!! This place has AMAZING food. The service is unpredictable though. They hire these poor young girls and just dump a ton of responsibility on them. They always seem pleasant (most of the time) but are clueless. The management must be terrible because the whole place is like a zoo. They seem to have an okay reputation but in my own experience I would have to say the food is good if they can get your order right but as I already stated the service is unpredictable. Went in here on a Saturday for lunch, after the friend I was with raving about how she had grown up with the Schat brother's bakery. The atmosphere of the place had a very warm feeling to it. Lots of baked goods, display cases with sweet baked goods, and maybe a dozen or so tables and booths. The place was packed (a good sign), and people were standing around, waiting to pounce on tables as other people left. We actually ended up sitting outside since it was so crowded inside. Business was very much a family affair, with Paul Schant's sister being the main waitress working the floor, and Paul's son (I'd guess just starting junior high) helping out. Of course, there were plenty of other folks working the registers and the kitchen, but the public face of the restaurant was family. I had the special, which was a french dip sandwich ($8), which came with a salad. The salad was solid, with good greens, tomatoes, etc. and the dressing on the side by default. (I should point out that for side salads, I consider anything that's not iceberg lettuce to be pretty good.) The french dip was great - piled high with what seemed like freshly carved roast beef, and a great French bread that had a perfectly crunchy crust. This was one of those sandwiches that you have to smoosh down a bit to get your mouth around. The large bowl of au jus was a perfect accompaniment to the sandwich. They had also given us some butter cookies after we had ordered, which were deliciously light. My friend had the German beer cheese soup in the breadbowl - again, a good crust on the bread, and the spoonful of soup I tasted was rich and hearty. Even though I felt stuffed after finishing my sandwich, I had to try one of the sweets in the display case, so on the way out I got a dark chocolate cashew turtle ($3.50). This was pure gluttony, with the rich mixture of cashews, caramel, and chocolate being delicious on the first bite. YUM, YUM, YUM, YUM, YUM, YUM! I've been doing some work in Carson City lately, and on a recent trip I suggested to my coworkers that we pop in to Schat's Bakery as I have seen them at events in Reno. We are all obsessed now, and planning to return regularly. The store has a bakery on one side, and a deli on the other. I have not eaten at the deli, so I will only review the bakery. They have the most amazing selection of bakery items - cookies, cakes, pies, turtles and other chocolate covered nuts, breads, etc, etc. It's nearly impossible to narrow my purchase down to something reasonable. They also have some fun imported baked goods. We took a box of assorted cookies from Schat's to a meeting and they were definitely a crowd pleaser! The way they could earn that last star is if they focused a little more on customer service. Both times I've been in recently, there are a lot of people working, but it seems very disorganized. No one provides a welcome or a "I'll be right with you," and it's hard to tell if they are busy and will get to us when they can or if we're supposed to get their attention to get help. It's a small quibble, and not enough to keep me from coming back, but just a suggestion to take this great bakery to the next level! read more

The food is amazing, especially the baked breakfast goods, coffee cakes and bagels. The coffee is good too, the service though is not up to par as their food. There is always something, my favorite was when I picked out a nice holiday wrapped bag of goodies and the cashier fiddled with the ribbon while my credit card was going through and unraveled the ribbon, I was shocked, she did clumsily tie it back up, but she should not have done that!! Another time I put in a lunch order that never made it to the kitchen and I never got my food , finally when I asked where my food was they told me it was never prepared, needless to say I just asked for a refund and went back to work hungry. That being said, I do go back only for baked goods and coffee, because like I said the food itself is really good, I just have very low expectations from their service based on multiple experiences so I don't want to dine in, because there is always something wrong going on when I need to ask for any kind of special help, customization or service from anyone that works there. read more

I would give this place 4 stars for nothing else but the heavenly aroma when you enter and the fast and friendly service. We got baked goods to go which were all very good. I am very surprised that the reviews are so low. Where do people buy their baked goods in Carson? Many people have failed to comment on the quality of the bread. It is a bakery, after all, so please sample the breads. We regularly get our bread here (once a week) and we won't go anywhere else for it. As well, the staff is probably the friendliest of any establishment in all of Carson. This is exactly the type of place that Carson needs. read more

I love their bakery. Their staff are, one on one, great people. Want a sandwich? Be ready for an hour wait that get you stuck with over salted food with grease sopping through the bread, and soggy fries. If you want a sandwich, I'd suggest the dumpster behind a McDonald's. Well, you walk inside and you're surrounded by all these amazing treats. Breads, cookies, cakes, breakfast delights, the works. It smells heavenly. The reason I gave this place three stars is because of the breakfast food itself. I ordered the Breakfast Sandwich on a croissant roll, with eggs, ham, and cheese. When it actually got to me, the eggs were watery. Had a real weird soggy taste. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito with the Chorizo, and it was really dry. He ended up having to remove the tortilla and pouring ketchup over the chorizo to make it less dry. My parents had the cinnamon roll and said it was great, so at least the treats are tasty. read more

So here's the skinny the pastries and stuff are good. The problem is that they aren't efficiently stocking their pastry case. If you don't get here by 8:00 am they are literally sold out of EVERYTHING. Clean IT UP Paul Schat! Also if you order a bagel they give you the smallest thing of cream cheese imaginable and charge you for extra and make you spread your own cream cheese. What a joke. Also no veterans discount. His brother gives one but he doesn't. I see why he split. I'm so glad this Bishop establishment came to Carson City. The location might be a little tough to find if you're visiting or new to town. I've been here many times to pick up Sheepherder's bread, monkey bread, eclairs, and other nice pastries from the counter. There's almost too much to choose from, and I've liked it all. I also sat down for lunch one day and had a latte and a toasted bagel. It was a nice cafeteria/sandwich-shop type meal. My companion had a sandwich and I didn't hear any negative comments from him. I do have one con: I bought a bag of 6 bagels (maybe they were day old?) and some of them seemed kind of soggy. read more

We hadn't been to a shatts previously and didn't understand how to navigate ordering sandwiches vs. Getting something from the bakery. The person taking deli sandwich orders was in a bad mood, made snarky face when we asked a few questions. She was impatient, heavy sighs, eye rolls etc that we weren't quick enough for her. There was no line so we weren't holding up anyone other than her. Flip side is the hamburger and sandwich we ordered were absolutely delicious! Fresh bread, fresh vegetables and great meats/cheeses. I am mainly writing in regards to the sourdough I purchase there on a regular basis. I grew up eating Sourdough bread from Pioneer bakery located in Southern California. I have looked and looked for something comparable and found that Paul Schat's sourdough is the next best thing. The bread is always baked to perfection and always has perfect color and texture. The starter must have been past down for generations because the sourdough flavor has its own unique twist as well. If you are looking for a good sourdough in Carson City, give this one a try. read more

I found my favorite thing they bake and that is the honey bran muffins. The tops are crunchy and gooey and the insides are moist. So good. I now call 40 hours in advance and order a few for my friends and coworkers. Now we are all big fans. Kudos to the baker at Schat's! He does great work. read more

This bakery is pretty awesome, we came in to get a tiramisu cake and ended up with the best apple strudel and sourdough bread, as well, they'll slice it for you if you'd like! Friendly service! *tiramisu is not made with the traditional lady fingers, but a sponge cake. read more

I come here pretty often. Sometimes for lunch or just to pick up some sweets. Their sandwiches are all fresh and are made to order. I really like their pastrami sandwich. It is very tasty! I always get it with a side of fries... YUM! Their eclairs and macaroons are really good, too! They also have truffles! O-M-G, their truffles are so yummy! The food runner sat us in the back and completely forgot about us! We had to ask multiple times for our food. Every-time we came up to ask if she remembered us, she would tell us they are making it?! The whole restaurant was full of people who came in after us and were served first. The food quality was poor and service even worse. If you have to go somewhere then go to the other bakery's!
