I had to pay $130 for simple eye exam that should have been completely covered by…read moremy vision insurance, because Botwin decided that they had done something "medical" rather than simple eye exam, so submitted claim to my medical insurance (which charges me deductible) instead of my vision insurance. The "medical" thing they did? Noticed I have mild cataracts, and said I don't need to do anything about them. This is the exact same thing I've been told for years by other optometrists who always submitted claim to my vision insurance, which covered the entire cost of the eye exam. Thus I had to pay $130 for them to tell me something I already knew, and that didn't need to be treated. I took this up with person at my medical insurance company, who told me that the insurance company had to go by the doctor's "code" for the claim, but that this "coding" sounded unreasonable to her, since the cataracts had already been diagnosed by another doctor, and aren't causing any problem yet. That person --- who works at the insurance company -- wondered if this was a way for an optometry practice to make more money. I don't know, but I'm not returning to Botwin again.

Lenses/frames are quite pricey, but of very good quality. Would like to mention Julie specifically. She has assisted me several times over the years. Last year she caught an omission in my prescription (from university) as there were not prisms noted on the prescription. She made me aware of it, I got a new Rx and then proceeded to have the glasses made correctly. That saved me a lot of money, as I did not have to have the lenses made twice. She is always so cordial, efficient and knowledgeable. I just ordered another set of lenses put into frames and the whole process was smooth as silk. Hope to work with her again.

However, more could be done. I spent half an hour waiting to be seen and after 20 minutes I stepped outside to avoid other patients browsing in the glasses area. After being admitted, I spent another hour in the exam rooms waiting to see the doctor. Staff wore masks when speaking directly to me but otherwise masks hung off ears. Physicians' offices, even eye doctors, need to be hyper vigilant.

I've called multiple times to ask about a referral that apparently never happened, and I was recently informed by two different people in the office that 1) the referral was definitely sent, and 2) the referral was never sent, and 3) they have no record of my multiple calls requesting the referral be revisited. As of June 5, I still had not had contact with the referral doctor, so I called her directly. Her office said they'd never received a referral. As for billing, I charged for things my insurance would cover, but were never billed for. After many phone calls, I managed to get that straightened out. My insurance paid, but I had to make sure they billed my insurance company. In addition, I was charged an additional $50 for my prescription, on top of the eye exam. Who does that?! My sense is that this office is inept and dishonest. I advise anyone reading this to find another eye doctor.

I just experienced someone at this office that did everything possible to discourage me and make me feel unwelcome. He told me he was told to tell people, ........ So, someone is actually training him, whoever that is misses the point of customer service. There are plenty of other offices that have trained the desk staff to impart warmth and caring while still maintaining client expectations and adhering to policy. If you train them to lead with policy, that's what they will do. But you miss the fact that they represent what the whole experience is going to be like. No thank you, why wait for an appointment if that is the way they treat me from the beginning. I want to feel like a doctor I am trusting with something as important as my eyesight cares about me. The first impression at this office spoke loudly about their culture. I'll go somewhere else, thank you.

He also made photographs of my retina that were no good because my eyes weren't dilated. I looked up whether it was necessary to dilate the eyes before a refraction, and Dr. Google said generally not unless you were far sighted. I am farsighted. I had to return my new glasses to Sam's Club and go in for another exam with my eyes dilated. I also insisted on new photos of my retina, which he did but the office tried to charge me for them. The new prescription was good, but this involved extra trips to his office and Sam's Club (total 4 visits) and was a big hassle. The only reason I didn't rate him one star was that the second prescription was good.
