Okay, I'm giving it five stars, even though I threw my sandwich away after the first bite. There was mayo in that bite. Communication was a struggle on both ends. I tried to get the man behind the counter to understand that I wanted half a muffaletta, with no mayo. I expressed this in several different ways, because the confused expression on his face indicated that none of it was registering. In the end I gave up and accepted the whole, giant sandwich wheel. It wasn't till I got home that I realized he'd misunderstood more than just the size I was asking for. I can't tell you how much I despise mayonnaise (unless I'm having a BLT, and am thoroughly in charge of the application of the condiment). Why would it even be an option, mayo on a muffaletta? It would be just as ridiculous to have to specify "no ketchup" on one. I don't mean to come off as overly dramatic, here, but that bite was more harmful to me than anything that has ever happened to anyone in the history of humankind. You're probably thinking, "He-LLO . . . Have you seen Schindler's List?" And you may have a point. I sat through that whole film just letting valuable hours pass me right by. But this sandwich thing was even worse. So, after all that bitching, why the five stars, Mike? Because I know it would have been good without the mayonnaise. And because I remember the old Antone's. Saw this place show up on lunchdrop, and was excited they had a Cuban poboy. Was very disappointing to say the least. Agree with other reviews here: way too salty and too much mayo. Most of all the poboys are overpriced as they are way too small. Probably won't order from here again. read more

Went for lunch, cute little place, nostalgia is what makes this place! It was a late lunch so, I was the only customer. Walked to the counter to order, was looking for a hey how are you or hi have you been here before? None of that happened. I went with the supreme poboy, was asked if I wanted it all the way, I did. A premade sandwich was pulled out of the cooler and handed to me. I was kind of taken back by that. Nonetheless, I chose my chips and drink. The sandwich was fairly simple, dry, and not rememberable. For being a premade sandwich the bread was still fresh, just dry. Would I go back? Maybe, but I would ask if they could make the sandwich fresh, you should too. read more

Wonderful experience from the time I entered the deli. Paulie the owner was very nice and immediately spoke upon us entering. I love the atmosphere as there was soft, soothing music playing in the background. I got a intimate, family feel as I saw who I believed to be a young family member there. This is definitely a family owned business which warmed my heart. The Smoked Turkey sandwich which I added avocado to was fantastic and exceeded my expectation. The French bread was nice and fresh. I also bought a jar of capers which I love, Zapps Spicy Cajun Crawtators chips (new flavor I hadn't heard of) and a Sesame snack from Greece that I can't wait to try. I love sandwiches and Poboys and now I have found my new Poboy spot. Hats off to Paulie and his staff. I will be back. P.S. The Smoked Turkey and Supreme sandwiches made fresh were great plus we tried some spicy Cajun chips I've never had and they were good. The order was bright out quick. The renovation of Brae Heights plaza several years ago resulted in numerous changes: a larger more defined parking lot, a revamped and more modern look to the building, and the conversion of what was once Antone's and what is now Paulie's. The ownership is all in the same family and is still going strong as a specialty sandwich destination. The interior is bright, clean, and full of natural light during the day. Despite the ample seating, it's been rarely full in my experiences, apart from a decent lunch crowd. Due to all the prepackaged foods, Paulie's also serves as an ideal grab and go / takeout spot. The customer service can be a mixed bag at times, but calling ahead of time goes a long way. Most of the staff is bilingual in Spanish and the parking is plentiful. I admire the niche for all things Louisiana. Whether it's a one of their poboy's, the Zapp chips, or the muffulettas, there's a lot to appreciate. The muffuletta was impressive visually, but similarly to the poboys, they're a bit skimpier than something one would find in New Orleans or Louisiana in general. The feel is a bit more corporate than it is small business, but beggars can't be choosers. Lastly, they shouldn't be confused for the uber popular Italian spot in Montrose. Both of the signs might look similar due to having the same name and being red, but it's completely different. read more

The sandwich I ordered was delicious but had too much mayonnaise but the flavor of the bread made up for it. However, the service left much to be desired. The gentleman who took my order was not welcoming in the slightest. When I approached the counter with chips and a drink, he simply asked, "Is that all?"--with no greeting or warmth. I replied that I'd like to order a sandwich, at which point he gave me the total and then immediately turned his attention to a man that had already ordered before me. I had a couple of questions, but his responses came across as dismissive, and he spoke to me in a condescending manner, without making eye contact. This is probably my favorite sandwich place in Houston, and if you live here you know it's a pretty competitive category. Some of their menu is reminiscent of Antone's when they still had their $hit together and consistently used great quality meats and fresh bread and sides... but that was back when actual train cars were part of their restaurant building and provided a unique seating option and I'm pretty sure they sold every pickled item known to man. Paulie's does their version of cold poboy hoagie sandwiches with chowchow and similar deli sides like potato or macaroni salad, deviled eggs, and great baklava for dessert. But they also have salads and several hot sandwiches like a Cuban and my fav is their "whole muffaletta" (which I prefer over the muffaletta poboy). I've been buying Antone's sandwiches in grocery stores for quite some time, but it was not until today that I realized that Paulie's is one of the descendants of the original Antone's brand (The saga of Antone's is a long one: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/entertainment/restaurants-bars/article/The-strange-saga-of-the-Antone-s-po-boy-13290766.php). A recent Houston Chronicle article about muffaletta sandwiches in Houston mentioned this place as one to check out, so I made my way there for a quick lunch (https://www.houstonchronicle.com/food-culture/article/The-muffuletta-sandwich-is-having-a-moment-in-16115098.php). Walking in, the interior is clean and bright with a smattering of tables whose coverings are patchworks of old wine bottle labels. In addition to the sandwiches available for immediate consumption, on the right wall there is a selection of olive oils, pickles, chow-chow (pickled relish), and a number of other food items and ingredients available for purchase. Lettering painted on the wall encourages patrons to ask if something specific is sought, as the business can always import what is needed. As one continues in, classic cold sandwiches running the gamut from turkey to roast beef to corned beef lie pre-wrapped in a refrigerator alongside various kinds of salads (Greek, chef, tuna, etc.) as well as a number of sides evoking different regions like the South (potato salad, deviled eggs), Texas (stuffed jalapeno with cheese) and the owner's birthplace of Lebanon (hummus, baba ghanoush, tabouli, dolma). If you want something hot you'll need to order at the counter where you can request sandwiches ranging from a Cuban to a gyro to a Philly cheesesteak to a bacon chicken ranch. I had come for the muffaletta but was in the mood for something warm so ordered the hot version of the New Orleans-born sandwich. Paulie's offers both a po-boy muffaletta that comes on skinny bread like other poboys or the whole that comes on the traditional round sesame bread from which the sandwich derives its name. I opted for the slightly more expensive whole version so as to maximize the amount of bread and meat. The sandwich was quickly prepared by the friendly lady on duty, and I soon discovered that the Houston Chronicle's recommendation had been spot on. The bread was soft and well toasted, containing an ample helping of ham, salami, provolone, and mortadella. Every muffaletta, though, is defined by the signature olive salad, and Paulie's olive mix passed with flying colors. The blend was tasty and adequately seasoned without being overly soggy, as such olive combinations sometimes are, and worked together fantastically with the various meats. Given the size of the sandwich, I often will eat half a muffaletta and save the rest for a separate meal, but this one was so good that I ate it all in one sitting. Despite only having the muffaletta, Paulie's strikes me as a quality operation with the tender loving care of a family business. I very much enjoyed my sandwich and overall experience and will be adding this place to my list of sandwich spots to return to. read more

Very very very very small Shrimp PoBoy for the price I paid! I can say that the flavor was partially there, though it needed a lot more shrimp & the French rolls need to be WAY bigger. This whole strip is under construction but Paulie's is going strong still open during all the mess. It's a little inconvenient because 1) you have to walk behind some construction to get to the entrance and 2) your view of the outside is completely blocked by said construction. But that's not what makes this place just average. That's done by the food. In the line of sub sandwiches shops this fails to shine. The one positive thing I did note is that it seems pretty clean on the inside despite all the construction going on. Once you enter, to your right they have a selection of cold subs that you can grab and go. This is what I chose. There weren't many left so presumably this place is popular. Then directly ahead is the check-out counter. It's not bad, it's not particularly expensive it just doesn't scream amazing.
