The omelet my wife ordered was pretty good. She got to pick whether she wanted 2 or 4 eggs, she picked 2, and she she had a choice of 5 things to put in it, most places you have to get 3 eggs and 3 choices. These options are good and the omelet was pretty good. I saw a hot roast beef sammich and assumed it would be open faced with gravy, nope. It was hot roast beef on a bagguette with the option of tomato, lettuce and mayo....when they gave me these options i was pretty sure what i thought it was...wasn't so...i declined the mayo. If you like your food to be bland this is the place. I don't recommend you coming here if you're a foodie or chef. This place is for people who don't know how to cook and never tried tasteful dishes. All the good reviews have to be a lie! Food reminds me of nasty school cafeteria food, or maybe prison food, never been but just saying. House of pies or toasted yolk is where to go for brunch in this area. "The French House" the name sounds, "exquisite, delightfully delicious", and not to mention "French". Walked inside and nothing appeared "French" about this place. It seemed more of a not too run down Chinese restaurant, that's as far as appearance goes. So I was debating whether or not to leave or stay. Well I sure did stay, thought maybe the breakfast won't be that bad. Hey, you can't go wrong with eggs and toast! Wrong! Ordered 2 country breakfast, 1 coffee and 1 orange juice, total a little over $50. Completely regretted the stay. The hash browns being the worst, taste was rancid, they were mushy and had sort of a rosemary taste but nasty. Toast was stale just too hard, adding butter to them wouldn't even soften them up. Sausage patties and bacon were just dry not savory or juicy at all. The eggs seemed fine but after trying everything my appetite was gone. Took this photo got up and left. The coffee, orange juice and fountain water were the only normal tasting items. I wish my experience could've been better. I'm not overly exaggerating here either. House of pies is the way to go for breakfast and a lot cheaper. Never again. Also if you do come here you first walk in and place your order at the counter, pay, they give you the cups for your drinks that you self serve, go sit and wait for your order to be called, then go grab it, no waiters. First time visit, and it was for breakfast. All I had was a cup of coffee and a slice of Spinach Quiche. The quiche was just a little different from what I am used to eating. The filling was softer (not as firm) as other quiche I have had in the past (or baked at home). It wasn't bad, just different. Unfortunately, the pie crust was a little too thick at the end (not the bottom). I usually eat that big piece of crust on any pie as a treat as the last few bites. In this case, it was just too thick, and not as flaky as I like, and I did not bother finishing it. The serving was slightly larger than I expected, which was nice. But, it needed a little something with it, such as a small salad (not unusual with a slice of quiche). With that said, the flavor of the quiche was good and I might have it again when/if I return. read more

I see a lot of fils like this place, but it's a ok place to me. I consider it a expensive knock off of La Madeleine. The inside looks more like a diner than a French cafe. The display near the register had some deserts that I may try in my next visit. The menu is simple and direct. I did see some sandwiches and soups that folks were getting and they looked good. Unlike La Madeleine, you have to place your order and pick it up from the counter in most cases. The presentation gets a B. The monogram plates was a nice touch. My omelette was not runny with a little fluff and that's a plus. The waffle was perfectly cooked, golden brown and the syrup and berries with whipped cream brought the right balance of sweet and savory. This is a spot you would go to as an alternative to your weekend breakfast spot. Not every weekend, but if your regular spot is crammed with folks then this could be your "one in the pocket". read more

Very impressed with both the quality and quantity of food served on my French toast breakfast today! Ordered eggs soft scrambled and bacon crisp - and they absolutely nailed it. The French toast itself was crusty around the edges and soft in the middle - just the way it's supposed to be. One of the best breakfasts I have had in a long time. My wife and I actually chose this place because of the waffle breakfast shown so prominently on their page. Turns out they only serve the waffle on the weekend - so we were initially letdown. I was also disappointed in the coffee - it wasn't up to what I was expecting and I don't like the 4 oz mugs. Also, the syrup should be warm rather than chilly. You need to post your true hours so people don't bother to drive there. I arrived at 1:48 with what I thought was plenty of time to throw some chicken salad on a croissant and grab a bag of chips before the 2pm closing time but "closed" sign up on the door with people eating inside. When I asked I was told kitchen closes at 1:50. By my calculation, it was there before your unlisted closing time but if you don't want the business, I don't care to give it to you! Been in Houston for a little under two months and had a delightful little breakfast at this gem of a place. Absolutely had the most delicious French toast in Houston so far... Coffee was served nice and hot and the French toast special that came with two eggs, some bacon and light buttery French toast was exactly what I was craving on Sunday morning. The French toast IMHO was cooked to perfection, not overcooked, not undercooked, not hard, not too soft and it tasted so so perfect that I wanted to order another batch but had to stop myself. I could go on and on about this French toast. Order it and savor it. Didn't expect self service as I didn't read the reviews prior but owner gave great service and it was quick and painless at 9 AM in the morning when most Houstonians are just getting ready to hit the restaurants (you have to be a Houstonian to understand that breakfast is a serious tall order on Sundays...lines a plenty and hungry Texans everywhere lol). THe food is great and I have been going here since the original French couple started it. The current owners have kept the recipes but not the attitude. They act like you should be happy they are willing to help as opposed to making an effort to make the experience good. So I had never heard of this place before, but I was looking for a new breakfast spot and decided to try it out because of all the good reviews. It's a decently-sized restaurant with plenty of seating. I got the 4 egg omelette with bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, bacon, and cheddar cheese. I also got two slices of toasted rye bread with butter on the side. The omelette was huge! It tasted good, but I still had to add salsa to get the flavor to exactly where I wanted it. Bread was fine. Can't demand too much from toast! Entire meal came out to $13 + tip. One weird thing was that you seat yourself, and the servers bring your food to you. However, when my food was ready, they called me to the counter to get it myself. Normally I wouldn't care about that at all, but I thought that was a little strange, considering I watched them bring food to other tables. Food was good, and the service was fine (despite the above weirdness). It's in the same shopping center as Nu Ice, so there's a ton of parking as well. The lady behind counter could care less about taking our order - I wanted poached eggs with classic breakfast- was told they don't do poached eggs. Waffles were not a choice because they are only done Friday-Sunday . I settled on a piece of quiche Lorraine and fruit cup which I was told would be grapes and cantaloupe. When order arrived the quiche was not completely cooked with undone crust on bottom - rather then small pieces of ham - there were large slices of deli ham. The grapes were not fresh and crunchy. When the quiche was returned the gentleman behind counter said that was not the only piece returned. That day. He did offer to do something else and when I declined did not offer a refund.. Came on a Sunday morning right at opening time. Owner is up front nice as can be and recs the waffle. Says it's his recipe and I won't be disappointed. Got some eggs n bakie on the side too. Dude this waffle...the waffle... it brought me to another galaxy, far, far away where rainbows and unicorns run wild. It was so perfect. Best waffle I've ever had. Great spot for a picture-perfect waffle. Husband and I were on a mission to find waffles this morning. We went by a couple of places and everywhere was either packed or "out of waffles" (lol how can that even happen). We actually stopped at crate and barrel to buy a waffle iron we were so desperate. But then someone recommended The French House! We were close by so we headed over. It's counter service, very clean and has an old-school charm. I'd describe it as a traditional diner with a French twist on the decor. We each ordered a waffle and it was light, crispy and delicious. It's sprinkled with powdered sugar and comes with a generous helping of whipped cream and fruit on the side. We also each had a cappuccino that was surprisingly great. The syrup wasn't maple, but still very delicious. Just a traditional breakfast syrup. Husband ordered eggs and sausage with his waffle. I asked him how the eggs and sausage were, and he said "tasted like eggs and sausage" lol so the waffle was definitely the star of the show. The other breakfast items looked yummy! I would definitely like to explore it. The clientele were a little older and all seemed to be regulars and know each other. I checked out The French House with one of my coworkers for lunch. They're located in the same shopping center as Zabak's and several other businesses so parking shouldn't be a problem. The restaurant is really nondescript from the outside but looks like your normal, everyday cafe inside. You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you. They're only open for breakfast and lunch but they serve breakfast during lunch time as well. I decided to go with the grilled chicken sandwich: small, sliced pieces of chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a French baguette. They also had freshly-squeezed OJ that was highly recommended on Yelp so I got a small juice too. The sandwich wasn't the greatest. I was expecting a sandwich-size piece of grilled chicken rather than small pieces of chicken. The chicken was also very dry and lacked flavor. It could have used a marinade and it seemed overcooked. You don't get a side order with your sandwiches so that was a bummer too. While the sandwich was affordable at less than $10, it wasn't worth it. Maybe I'll come back to see how their breakfast fares. read more
