Last week I had a craving. A craving for something sweet, like cupcakes (notice that is plural). I didn't want to go to Colonial Cupcakes, and I didn't want to go to Eileen's, so I googled bakeries in Fredericksburg. Paul's came up, and there was even a website! So I threw the boy in the car and we headed off with our directions. We arrived at Paul's and walked in. I really wanted a cupcake, but the only ones they had looked like grocery store cupcakes (they just didn't look homemade to me). They also had pies, and several kinds of danishes and cinnamon buns. The lady at the register had her eye on me, so I felt like I had to buy *something*. Then I saw the doughnuts. All different kinds. I had my son pick out his- blueberry-filled. I got 2 kinds- custard-filled, and chocolate-topped custard-filled. I got my husband a lemon-filled one. The four doughnuts came to $3-something. I couldn't wait until we got home, so we sat in the parking lot and ate our doughnuts. They were SO good. I haven't had a doughnut in probably 5 years, and these were as good as Krispy Kreme. I am new to the area, and my coworker told me about Paul's Bakery so being the connoisseur that I am I made my way there. It's right on the main street of Lafayette Bld if you are coming from J.Davis Hwy. It's a bit down the road so don't get discouraged, it's in a nice safe shopping center before you reach the apartment complexes on the left. There is a shopping center on the right before Paul's that I was hoping and praying was NOT where it was located and it was not (whew!). Anyhoo, when you walk in, there is a sign promoting another business, and I thought that was interesting?? It is your typical family bakery and you automatically feel at home when you walk in. The woman at the counter is so "Virginia polite" and when I told her it was my first time she gave me a free donut hole to see if I'd like her product. She just didn't know I likes "mah" donuts! (except from the chain stores). There were lot's of glazed available, I'm not one for filled donuts but based on the reviews I will try one, I tried the honey wheat cake donuts with various icings (maple, white, coconut) and they were great! Small but that's because they are so dense. My raised was delish but squishy. They should maybe chill them a bit? to hold their shape when traveling. All in all it was a quaint experience. There is a CCard min of $6. (=8 donuts, or add a soda). When leaving, she mentioned to try her husbands seafood business outside (hence the sign on the door). I like the in house promotion and I am sure they are very successful. Definitely visit this place, you will not be disappointed. I like to support local businesses, but I've never been thrilled with Paul's. Everything tastes like it's drenched in Crisco. And now their doughnuts are up to $10 for a dozen. Not really worth the trip. read more

So yummy, the only doughnut place I have every liked! The chocolate covered and oreo doughnuts are so amazing and everything is priced well! They run out of the best doughnut flavors by 11-12 in the afternoon so that's a little annoying but if you order ahead you can obviously pick them up whenever. But you can't order a simple cake with less than two days notice anymore. I literally just wanted a cake that said happy birthday, the last there years they were able to prepare this simple 12 inch cake with a single days notice. They prepare chocolate and vanilla cakes for random pick up daily and used to just throw words on it if you wanted the day of but not anymore! In the future I will order with further notice. read more

Old fashioned yeast raised doughnuts made the right way. They have an entire case just devoted to big fluffy plain glazed doughnuts. The chocolate frosting on the custard doughnut was homemade like mom used to make. The honeybun and sour cream cinnamon were delicious. The counter service staff were all friendly. And to boot my large coffee came with a couple of doughnut holes. read more

Paul's Bakery has been around the area for a long time and has good history and reputation here - so much that it pretty much has a cult following. Their baked goods are delicious (and I love how often they give out donuts for free - follow them on Facebook!), but there have been many times when I'd walk in and they lack a lot of variety. Their cake donuts are the best in town. The location is a bit out of the way for me (they're on Lafayette near the Salvation Army thrift store), but whenever I do end up driving down that way, I HAVE to stop for either cake donuts or their cream cheese pastries - those are delicious. I used to commute down Lafayette and always stopped by to grab their coffee, which is roasted by Don from Blackstone, and it's delicious. So a little out of the way, but at least they're covering an area that doesn't have a coffee shop / bakery, so it's so nice to have them there when you happen to be driving in that area! read more

Love Paul's! The donuts aren't fancy...but they are consistently delicious! They seem to run out of some basic flavored pretty quickly on some days...so shop early on weekends! read more

This is a bakery, but if you want a wedding cake they don't make them. Never heard of a bakery that didn't make wedding cakes. Yes the doughnuts looked and smelled heavenly but I wasn't there to buy a doughnut today. Guess real bakeries are going to be a thing of the past. read more

Yahoo - Happy 40th! I have lived all over the world, and Paul's donuts are the best. I've been eating these donuts since I was a teenager back in 1973 when they first opened for business. I just wish that Paul retired with me so I could have them here at the beach too.
