I was looking for a place to study for my exam and realized this place is new. It's quite small inside but I was able to get a lot of work done because it was not crowded at all. I'm not an avid coffee drinker but I ordered a vanilla latte just to try it out. AND, It turned out to be amazing! They also serve a varieties of pastries and coffee as well. Wonderful people, food, and atmosphere. The reason for the 1 star is that I've attempted to go here 5 times. 3 of those 5 were fine. However, the remaining 2 they were closed (for a plethora of random reasons like electricity or snow), even though it was during their regular open hours and there was nothing about them being closed online! I really wanted to make this my go to coffee and breakfast place, but this place closed 40% of the time after I've made the trek there and during their open hours just doesn't work. read more

Their bagels are the bomb! The best bagels I've had outside of Brooklyn, which is automatically worth 5 stars in my books. Crispy outside, doughy inside (almost a New York/Montreal bagel hybrid... or something). I can't comment on the coffee or wifi, but come for the bagels and stay for the atmosphere. read more

This review is just of the food, not the coffee. Used to come here all the time when it was Bagel Rising (which had amazing bagel sandwiches). When they switched it to Pavement, they kept a few of the bagel sandwiches on the menu but jacked the prices up to an absurd level, so I stopped coming. My girlfriend decided to give them one more shot and picked up breakfast sandwiches for us from there today. They completely screwed up our order. She didn't have time to go back so we just ate what they gave us, which was not even very good. Stay away if you're looking for a good breakfast sandwich. Try Refuge Cafe or Dolce Vita Cafe instead. read more

A very small cramped spot with so so service. After waiting in line when went to order the woman seemed to want to rush is through. She was nice but such a low talker that we couldn't hear anything she said. When asked if they could do the sandwich with egg whites she checked and said no. This lead me to two possibilities one they are using fake eggs or two the "cooks" were just to lazy to do an extra step. For the price and all the other hipster ingredients I don't see how they couldn't have done one with egg whites. read more

Really small and not a lot of space. Wifi is limited to 120 minutes before you have to pay (I'm guessing that's due to the limited space). The Barista was friendly, and my latte well made. The basics: wifi works, if at 500kB/s - they offer unlimited bandwidth for a price; the environment is cramped but clean. Getting a table for two as opposed to bar stools is a matter of luck. There's a wide mix of music that comes on - Frank Sinatra, abba, mgmt, Hall and Oates - generally popular stuff but not for any one age group or genre. Service: quite friendly, but slower, and if I had to change one thing about Pavement I'd ask for there to be more than 1 barista working both the register and the espresso machine when they get slammed. If the seats are full and there are 3 people in line, I move on - I'm sure I could be waiting 10-15 minutes for a coffee. Coffee: better than Starbucks, but Pavement is not a coffee varietal dispensary. Possibly they do aeropress? Food: the pastries are good. I had the bagel with lox once and it was fine. Not having dined at its previous incarnation as bagel Xanadu myself, I can't speak to how well Pavement lives up. read more

Ew. Seriously. This place has terrible, berry flavored coffee that is usually served cold. A few times they didn't even have regular black coffee! It's not that tough. Avoid eating bagels here, I have a sneaking suspicion they are Thomas' brand, though they claim to be freshly baked. Oh yeah and they are usually out of most varieties. Typical. The eggs are steamed and serve with a funky, half melted piece of cheese. Someone thought it was a good idea to put lettuce on an egg and cheese sandwich. Not sure why. They don't have sausage unless you think tofu is sausage, which pavement does. I go sometimes since it is less than 100 feet from my apartment but can't wait until these dirty hippies run the business into the ground so a new coffee shop will open in its place. I'll be honest... The first time I came here I was a little underwhelmed. The previous bagel place that was located here was AWESOME so some people have certain expectations about this place which isn't fair for Pavement. (In good news they still make Tequila Sunrise here! Woo!) This is probably the best bagel/morning coffee place in Allston right now. I went here this morning and got an everything bagel with cream cheese and a chai latte. First, the line was long but it went quickly. There were even plenty of places to sit even on a busy Saturday morning. Second, I ordered a small latte and the barista made too much and asked if I wanted the extra (yes, WIN!). My bagel came out (toasted) and was open faced. 100% of the time I have to pull apart my bagel and smear it to be an open faced bagel myself so this was actually a huge convenience for me. I'm originally from NY so I'll say they're not NY bagel quality (the soft chewy kind with the boiled outside) but the whole atmosphere, experience, and bagel/drink was really good. Why would the owner convert such a popular bagel place into THIS?! Bagel Rising will surely be missed by everyone in the area. Their food selection is minimal and expensive compared to what the location offered before (almost $8 for a bacon, egg and cheese?!) The coffee was mediocre and my bagel sandwich was just okay. Last and final chance for this place happened today. Sure the food is good and so is the coffee but its not worth the atmosphere of this place. It just opened not too long ago and the new layout and new menu hold nothing close to the caliber of the previous bagels rising. The new pavement coffee house has a long table going right down the middle of an already overcrowded place. People have no where to go and the service is so terrible, it takes forever to get a bagel that is good but not worth this headache. The people working there have no idea how to make a sandwich and have an organized system to get it out properly. Theres a huge line waiting to order and a huge line waiting for food and waiting to get their right food after the first food was wrong. I miss Bagel Rising. When they closed for changes they swore much of the menu would stay the same. Not true. I've been hesitant to go in since the changes because it looks just like another Pavement. Today I had a change of heart and tried it, learned my lesson -- not worth it. They no longer have my favorite bagel/sandwich concoction, The Sahara, and have a fraction of the bagels they used to sell. Just another chain coffeehouse. If you're looking for Bagel Rising, you'll be disappointed by the changeover to Pavement. I'm a fan of all the other Pavement locations, but this one really let me down. Bagel Rising always had a line out the door and friendly, happy employees. With the change to Pavement, the menu is a fraction of what it used to be (bagels definitely aren't the stars here anymore) and the environment feels sterile and pretentious. It took twice as long to get our food too, no doubt because the staff has a whole new process to conform to. While I'm intrigued by some of the new menu offerings I can't help but feel sad and disappointed that Allston lost a staple. Even the staff looked sad about the change. Why change a good thing? Hey. So I've always been a fan of pavement and the service is always great. But this location needs to improve on ordering supplies. Every time I go they are out of the same things! To the point that I'm considering not going anymore. All they ever have is cinnamon rasin bagels, it's like, hey order more of everything else. On Sunday at noon everything was already out. I am so disappointed by the rebranding/destruction of what was a great neighborhood place that I felt compelled to create a yelp account. My most recent, and last ever trip here highlighted the problem. While I was waiting for a disappointing toasted bagel with cream cheese (the creation of which took far too long) two other couples came in looking for Bagel Rising.
