    Look great, taste bad
    Jenn J.

The Albertsons mothership converted a nice Vons in the high rent neighborhood of Hermosa Beach (blocks from the beach) into a Pavilions. That Vons was my favorite. The bakery was amazing. We ordered cakes every month for birthdays, other family occasions, work events, everything. Let me say that again: instead of the fancy bakeries in Hermosa, Manhattan Beach, etc, we loved the cakes here best. Nice young lady who made tasty and classy looking cakes. Friendly, energetic staff, for the most part. The remodel was messy. Bought unsaleable food as the refrigeration and FIFO system must have been in disarray during the remodel. That was frustrating. The prices for Pavilions are higher. Some of my favorite Vons brands are no longer carried. What bugs me the most is that they ruined the awesome bakery. We got cakes recently that looked 'fancier' than before but tasted absolutely terrible - they were overcooked, dry, cardboard. Even when special ordered. Worse than other terrible grocery tasting store cakes. That's not an upgrade. I'm not going to risk a birthday or retirement party with this kind of cake. It's a sad loss for our neighborhood.

Had to leave a positive review for the bakery! The cake artist there made this amazing creation of a birthday cake! Birdy who works there was also super friendly and helpful in helping me make an order!

This store is overrun with dogs, and no one there does anything about it. They are on long leashes, blocking aisles, and a great nuisance.

I didn't even need to walk all the way inside and I knew this was going to be "the place." They consistently forget major components like condiments or vegetables that are clearly listed in the sandwich description. Lately I've had to remind them or ask for extras just to get what is supposed to come standard. Today it happened again. I asked for oil and vinegar and received a dry, inedible sandwich. When I called to explain that this has happened multiple times, the person I spoke with essentially called me a liar, insisting it had been added, despite the fact that there was no oil on any of the wrappers. When I asked how they planned to make it right, especially given the astronomical prices they charge for sandwiches, I was told they might give me extra oil and vinegar next time and possibly a bag of chips. Nice customer service. Great idea to throw digs at loyal customers. Super smart. The new ownership the past few years is disappointing. It's unfortunate because we live just a few blocks away and come here often. When I order something, I expect to receive what I ordered and I certainly do not expect to be talked down to when there is a mistake on the deli's part. We have spent so much money there over the years but no more. PS they are always super pushy with asking for a tip when you pick up your sandwich too and most of the staff become irritated when you press the "no button" and give you a weird attitude....talk about an environment that's the opposite of your friendly neighborhood grocery store. They should be called greedy's not granny's!

It's unexpectedly large for a place by the shore, and I was thrilled because even though I checked Yelp and Google, I couldn't find much info. They're open super early and stay open late, and it's just such a gem especially since that area tends to shift toward restaurants or other businesses. This neighborhood really needed a good grocery store, and they have everything: fresh meat, drinks, snacks, fruits just like a full local grocery. The staff was really nice and laid-back, though the only downside is that parking is super limited and intersection it's tough to get in and out since it's near a small with a red light. Still, I'm really glad it's there, and I want to give a big shout-out to the local folks to support this place. The prices are really reasonable, and we need to keep these local businesses thriving. they're the heart of the community. I gave them five stars. I just hope they can clean it up a bit inside, maybe freshen up the shelves or ceiling. But overall, I'm so happy it's here, and we need more of these places in our city.

From the second we walked in, we were met with an attitude that was cold, dismissive, and openly rude. Asking simple questions felt like we were committing some kind of offense. Instead of basic professionalism, we were treated like an inconvenience, like our presence alone was a problem. The tone, the body language, the lack of courtesy, all of it was unnecessary and completely unacceptable. What made this experience even worse is that it did not feel like an isolated moment of bad service. It felt personal, hostile, and deeply disrespectful. We left feeling unwelcome and disturbed by how casually we were treated with such disregard. No customer should ever walk into a business expecting to spend money and walk out feeling belittled, brushed off, and unwanted. Businesses in a community like Hermosa Beach should be held to a higher standard than this. Respect is not optional. Professionalism is not optional. Common decency is not optional. If a business cannot manage those basics, then it does not deserve the public's trust or support. After this happened, I checked the Yelp and Google reviews, and that only made this worse. Review after review described the same kind of rude, hostile, abrasive behavior. At that point, this no longer looks like one bad interaction. It looks like a pattern. And when the same complaints keep surfacing from different people across different platforms, the public should pay attention. So let this be a warning to anyone in the Hermosa area: avoid this place. Spend your money somewhere that values customers and knows how to treat people with respect. Do not ignore the reviews. Read them for yourself on Yelp and Google. The pattern is there, and based on our experience, it is absolutely real. Beach Market Hermosa is the kind of place that reminds you how fast one toxic interaction can ruin an entire business reputation. No one should have to deal with this kind of treatment, and no business should feel comfortable operating this way without being called out for it.

I remember falling in love with the produce department because having access to radicchio, endive, watercress, sorrel, heirloom tomatoes (before they became crummy), morel mushrooms and Crenshaw melons was cooler than ice cream at the north pole. My tiny kitchen became my creative space for some tasty meals and to wow my friends. I had my share of failures too, but they only inspired me to keep trying. This Gelson's has been open for quite a while but it's a longer drive from my house by maybe 4 or 6 minutes. That time isn't a deal breaker, it's a convenience thing. It's Gelsons, in Manhattan Beach. You won't find amazing prices here, but you will find some of the best, quality, unique and prime groceries, products and items you never knew you needed. There's a price for this and if you're sensitive, you might be better served at another grocery store. Service was friendly and straightforward. I didn't have to circle the parking lot for a space or squeeze into one meant for a tiny car. Carts were packed full and easily accessible. Shelves stocked full, bakery packed with colorful sweets likely to satisfy anyone's palate and a deli, complete with pre-made packaged delights to make your meal prep easy peasy.
