I have lived in La Jolla and shopped at this store for over 50 years. 50 years ago it was a small town and very friendly. My parents shopped in the store even prior to that. The prices at the store within the last year have doubled or tripled. I'm not sure if it was because of the change of name or because they've decided to market to tourists with their products. I understand also, that the clientele in La Jolla can be quite difficult to deal with. I am not. As I am checking out, the checker doesn't even look at me talk to me and the person bagging my groceries is disrespectful to me I make a point of thanking them And they just look the other way and treat me like I am nonexistent. I'm not sure if it is just the way the world is now or things are changing in my hometown, but it's very saddening and disappointing. Let's show some love people! read more

The meat, bakery and deli counter offer better quality and more variety of products than the sister store Vons. Vonscard and points work at Pavilions. The one thing that bugs me is there's several items that you can go get at Vons for cheaper. And the floor, whoever decided to just leave polished concrete is nuts. Put some tile down to finish the interior of the store. read more

VONS/PAVILLION ON GIRARD GAVE MY PARENTS THE WRONG FLU SHOTS! Ironically, we chose them because they had FLUBLOK. We clearly stated that their doctor wanted them to receive FLUBLOK, and the pharmacist gave them FLUZONE, which has much worse side effects. We read the paperwork when we got home, and realized what had happened. When I called to complain, the pharmacist said, "The nurse told me to give the higher dose." What nurse?!? We told her to give them what their doctor ordered, and it looks like she ignored that. Words of warning: Don't go to Vons/Pavillion for ANY shot - you do know what you might get. read more

Usually my favorite Vons to go to, but I had a particular poor experience with a checker, Debbie. I am a trans man, and when Debbie asked me, "Did you find everything your looking for, ma'am?" I gently corrected her and said "Sir." Instead of respecting me, she once again looked me in eyes and said "will that be all for you today, ma'am?" I was baffled, and very hurt. I didn't realize I had to experience transphobia when I was just trying to buy groceries. Anything here flies, I guess. read more

So tried to contact Vons through the Vons site only to be transferred all over and never was able to reach anyone who could help me or take a message for the district manager so that this issue would be addressed. Finally found a contact for Vons and tried messaging him but still have received no reply or message back. So in reply to comment on my post review, I have tried contacting Vons through the app and chat line to get no place but transferred all around with no one caring enough to help. I guess the store projects the attitude and it continues on up the chain. Its okay though. I just hope no one with a disability experiences the discrimination or embarrassment as was projected at this store. And hopefully word gets out.... read more

Hands down the nicest Vons there is! It's definitely fitting in its La Jolla location. I feel like their flowers and arrangements are nicer than other locations! Probably because they know people can afford it here. I came in yesterday while I was walking in Downtown La Jolla with my roomie. It was super duper hot and I was telling her about Hawaiian Springs water. I think it tastes better than any other water lol maybe because of the nice packaging. I like it even better than Fiji Water. Anywho, there was a good deal 2/$3 for the huge bottles. This Vons is too far from me to make it my usual location, but if I still lived in La Jolla I'd make this my place! read more

This is a review coming from a guy who actually enjoys grocery shopping. I first discovered this store after moving to the village. It became our grocery store out of sheer convenience. We were initially turned on by the delivery service, until we started receiving several expired items each order. ....going to the store must be better, right? Sadly, it is not. My trip usually begins with a dose of high blood pressure navigating the parking lot. I prefer to go straight to the back. The lot and it's spots are just large enough to comfortably fit a smart car. After entering, I usually go straight to the deli for my pre sliced, dried out, deli meat. I have asked why this store pre cuts ALL deli meat, and was simply told that it is easier for the deli staff....sure thing. By the time I have hit the produce on the other side, I usually have at least a few expired items if I have not checked. I have learned my lesson! I have come home to find expired frozen, dairy, grocery and even liquor (bottle of baileys last December. I didn't even know it expired till I saw the date). One shining light in this store is the floral department. The ladies take obvious pride in what they do and are always very helpful. The selection is also very large. Like many stores, this Von's has really embraced allowing pets to shop. I have had several snarky conversations with dogs sniffing my basket and bags. These are not service dogs. You should leave them home. Yes, we all think you are an idiot if your ugly a** pug is sitting in the shopping cart...but it's Von's, so nobody cares! read more

Super friendly service... someone is always around ready to answer your questions and guide you in the right direction. A clean, well organized store- You definitely know you're in La Jolla yet prices are the same as the other Vons locations... so you get upscale shopping at decent prices... win win. Only downside is the Starbuck's inside is hit or miss... definitely have received burnt coffee more than once. read more

My worst experience ever in a Vons store happened today: The parking Gestapo in the parking lot noted my license plate number. When I asked the lady why she did that the answer was "that's not your business!". Very friendly start, I should have left at that moment. It's easy to find the products you want, because the shelves are clearly marked. It his hard to find products which are not already expired, especially in the dairy and deli departments. It's even harder to find an employee to whom you can address that issue. It seems to me that they are in the parking lot, busy doing field work for a 3-letter-agency. OK, at the end I found the dairy product I needed after setting aside eight expired ones. But I gave up on the deli. I saw a nice cockroach in the produce department and took a photo of it. It was moving, not so the staff member who noticed the whole incident. Maybe he is animal friendly, like the cashier is, who wasn't complaining about the small "service" dog that was riding the conveyor belt in front of me. That was too much and I set my perishable dairy container aside in a normal, not cooled shelf and left the store. So be aware of a not expired dairy product in Vons in the next weeks - it maybe had be sitting without cooling for days or weeks before an employee noticed it. The Vons at Liberty Station is a jewel, friendly staff everywhere in the store, the product selection is way better than in the La Jolla (Girard Ave) store. I never found any expired products and they never have been out of the normal grocery products that I expect in a grocery store. They also do not have the parking-Gestapo. So it's not a problem of the Vons chain, it's a total failure of the management in the La Jolla store, paired with the matching staff. read more

NOTE: If you're attending the Comedy Store show, this place will tow you! Thankfully, I wasn't a victim... I did, however, almost park here before moving my car across the street to a restaurant my girlfriend and I grabbed dinner from. I did stop by after the show around 11:45 PM to fix a chocolate craving that I had, and as usual VONS policy... there was only 1 cashier for about 15 people. Freakin' ridiculous. Inside, I was able to withdraw funds from their Wells Fargo ATM, and I was impressed with their dual Starbucks and Jamba Juice setups. Usually, I thought all stores had one or the other. The store itself was pretty clean, but just be careful if you're planning on parking here for something else even with their "2 hour parking limit" signs. read more

I am surprised by all the good reviews for service at this Vons, because during my 4 years of living in La Jolla when I was a patron of this store I was convinced all the checkers were the most unhappy people I had ever met. Granted I usually frequented the store around 7am in the morning, so maybe its just that particular shift that had problems. I constantly watched in horror as some of the checkers were incredibly mean and condescending to the elderly and disabled baggers that worked there. While my checker experiences were usually awful, everyone else (produce, stock team) seemed pleasant and always said hello. This store also had a great talent for discontinuing all the items I frequently bought. I knew if I found an awesome brand and flavor that I loved, it would only be a matter of time until the stopped carrying it...didnt matter what it was, yogurt, waffles, oatmeal, frozen lunches, cereal, ice cream, it never failed. I partly blame the residents of La Jolla for this since nobody but me was apparently buying these things but me. No matter how hard I tried to stockpile items to convince the store there was a demand, they were not fooled. I moved out of La Jolla last year, and I do not miss this Vons one bit. read more

It may be cleaner than the Pacific Beach one, but the layout is stupid, things are constantly mislabeled, most employees seem miserable to be there, and in general everyone just seems pissed off to have to be shopping at this little piece of dogcrap they call a grocery store. And let's not forget how so many items on the shelves are well passed their "best by" date and the general lethargic attitude of management when you bring it up to them. Horrible customer service! I purchased something and did not like the taste so I wanted to return it but I threw away my receipt bc I was not anticipating on returning it and instead of letting me exchange it for something else they questioned the timeframe I had the item and asked why I didn't return it sooner. Um because I don't live at the grocery store and go there every single day?! It's crazy they would even question me when I'm just doing an exchange for something else. In the end they finally let me exchange it for something else but was extremely rude about it and not welcoming at all. Last time I will be shopping at this Vons!!!! read more

Uhhhh... not sure why this place gets any good reviews. I've never been to a worse Safeway variant. So this appears to be this particular Von's business plan: - Neglect store hygiene for at least a year - Allow the carts to go feral - Have no selection. None. You don't like store brand cream cheese? Too bad. Lucerne or gtfo. - Breed fruit flies. Even in the bagel bin. Customers like flies. - Let the produce spoil (for the flies of course) - Have extra long lines for no apparent reason. Longer the better. - Charge a premium for all these luxuries (they are by the Ferarri dealership after all) - Make people bag all their own groceries. They need the exercise. Seriously - the place smelled like dead hermit crabs or something. It was -filthy-, we couldn't find half the things we were tasked to bring home, and the lines were horrible. I feel very sorry for our poor Cali neighbors who think this is acceptable. This place is "upscale shopping" the same way Taco Bell is authentic mexican. Pretty sure this place would get razed in Scottsdale. Two stars because the cashier was really cool. read more

Well gosh, I so want to give this grocery store more stars but am afraid that I'm being generous already by choosing three. While vacationing in La Jolla, this was the closest grocery store so we frequented it more than once and unfortunately were disappointed with each visit. It was conveniently located and the employees were friendly enough so I'm giving them credit for that, but never have I seen a grocery store with bare shelves day after day. Stocking apparently is a challenge at this store as they were out of multiple items on our list and when we returned later in the week they were sadly still out of those items. read more

Yesterday, I came into Von's, looking for soup ingredients. Right away, an employee named Ben asked if he could help me find anything. Later, at the register, an employee named Debbie, asked what I was making. I mentioned I needed white beans. She saw what I had in my cart, and immediately said I had the wrong type of beans. As a novice in the kitchen, cooking soups, I had no idea. Debbie was so kind; she went to the aisle where the canned veggies were, and picked out the correct white beans for my recipe. I live in the village and although this grocery store is so close, I avoid going here unless I absolutely have to and I will only get a small handful of items. It's dated in the inside, poor quality selection for cheeses, meat, bread, and ALWAYS a line and not enough cashiers. They give all kinds of reasons for the lack of checkout open, but it's always understaffed. Not a fun experience so I go to Ralph's in UTC, Whole Foods UTC and Gelson's. read more

If there was anything else near by.... This is a very clean vons compared to most of them and the prices are usually accurate when being rung up. The bakery is nice and the bread is good. The Meat department gets a 1 star, I have had more food poision from eating there meat then the times i didn't There produce is over priced as usual but very clean. Now that we frequent the La Jolla Farmer's Market (see my review of that) for most of our fresh food needs, we don't shop at Vons that often. However, when we do shop here, we find a large selection of items and friendly staff. We are often asked while shopping in there if we need help finding something...maybe it's because we take so long to decide what to get, but hey at least we know if we needed help, it's there. Last weekend, they had free samples and were giving away a free cake in their bakery for father's day. I thought that was a nice gesture. Today, we noticed an employee helping a customer to her car. For a grocery store in La Jolla, I think this Vons is pretty good. Nice people, good selection, and with all the club savings and coupons I use, I always get a great deal on my purchases. I appreciate when they tell me "Mrs. M you saved 47% today"...I spent time cutting those coupons, so yes, please tell me how much I saved. :) One thing to note...the parking lot is patrolled so if you do park there and don't shop at Vons (or certain businesses in there) your car will get towed if it is there for too long. read more

I'm from AZ where Vons is Safeway. I love Vons. they have great quality food, deli and most locations have a fresh butcher block. This one does too. However this location is small, and not what I would expect from a Vons/Safeway. I prefer the other location in Temecula but I do frequent here if I am in the area. One thing that's awesome is they have 5 dollar Fridays in which they have numerous items for 5 dollars, ie, the good lunch meat will be $5/LB, roasted chickens, cheese, etc. They don't have a gas station to get their rewards. If they did I would shop her way more often. read more

I always shopped here while in the area for medical procedures. This is a great store. Very large and they always had what I was looking for. They have a wonderful bakery and a great deli with wonderful chicken and cole slaw. Even have a Starbucks inside with great coffee and delicious sandwiches. S great p li ace to shop. read more

I love the staff at this store. Helpful. friendly. Which is great because this location is half a block from the house. I've come here frequently for many years. But something must have changed a year or so ago at the management level. Many items are now running out all the time. All kinds of items that I buy regularly are frequently out of stock. Everything from sliced cheese to pet food... cereal...bread...almond milk... non-dairy coffee creamer half a dozen other items that I've purchased for years here are nearly always out of stock. The labels are there, but the items are out of stock. It seems like maybe somebody inexperienced has taken over the ordering responsibilities or something. Whatever it is it's noticeable. If I were top management at Vons I'd want to know, so I decided to mention it here. It's gotten serious enough that for the first time in many years, I'm now driving into PB to go to other grocery stores to find items that are routinely out of stock at Vons. read more

Wine and liquor prices are great. Selection of organic is large. Flower arrangements are spectacular. If you need a grocery I'm La Jolla this is it! The fresh rolls were good too. The jalapeño cheddar rolls made great sandwiches. Nice amount of heat. If you aren't local ask the cashier to scan a club card to get the best prices. Took $20 off our $145 total! read more

Can't stand this store. I get that Vons employs special needs employees but every single time I go, I get pushed aside so they can sweep down the particular aisle that I am in. So frustrating. Maybe they should help explain that they go where the customers aren't to clean at that moment. The deli is out of the Superfood salad I like too often. Lots of parking. Clean store. Good customer service. However the reason I rank it 4 stars is because their sandwich department is almost never open. Every time I go mornings, afternoons, or evenings they're department is closed!! I suggest you hire more people to run that department and have other employees scattered throughout the store to help out people searching for items. So much for honoring those of us who have lived past 65. I am 76 and went to shop today (7-9 seniors). Ha ha that's a joke. I noticed a number of people in line that couldn't be over 40. I went to front of line - no rep from store. I called the store and the manager came to the phone to tell me they are not allowed to discriminate against younger people so allowing in one at a time. Three cheers for head office Albertsons. Attaining 65 MEANS NOTHING AND YOUR WEBSITE IS DISHONEST. From a past valued customer. You are not distinguished by your store manager. Love Vons because of members deals, but this location and my cashier Jimmy today, totally disappointment. He was really unpleasant, when I wanted him to scan my app coupons he acted as annoyed. I bought lots of stuff and tried to make sure all coupons were applied...When I came home I realized he charged me extra. Instead of buy 1 and get 2nd bottle free I paid for both and he charged me 3rd as extra(didn't have 3rd)! I am shocked and definitely not coming back to this location. read more
