We spent a weekend in La Jolla this month, and Neighbor-Saver Market was low-key instrumental in facilitating our vacation. If you're planning a beach holiday in this part of town, you will probably end up shopping at this exact convenience store. We got into town ahead of our friends, and they requested that we buy a couple of long-handled wood and plastic beach shovels for their kids. They sent us a picture and said they could never find them anywhere except at the beachside shops in La Jolla. We went on a little walk and immediately came across Neighbor-Saver, and sure enough, the shovels were there, right when we went in. The shop was big and well stocked, as clean and nice as it had to be and not even a little bit more. There were toys and apparel for sale, plus all the standard convenience store items and a counter for Thrifty ice cream. We picked up three shovels, figuring our boys might want their own, and a $22 bottle of spray-on sunscreen. The cashier was polite, the transaction seamless and quick. We checked into La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club later that afternoon and the boys and I didn't leave for the next two days. The kids loved playing at the beach, and they were absolutely obsessed with those shovels. My husband did go on a couple of errands, hunting and gathering pizza and wine. He brought back a few decent bottles, and when I asked him where he found them, he said he just walked to the Neighbor-Saver Market. The selection wasn't impressive or anything, but we drank perfectly well. In retrospect, I regret not going back to the market to pick up one more beach shovel. Our friends were right, as it turns out--you can't just buy the same ones on Amazon. I'll have to go back to Neighbor-Savor next time we're in La Jolla. We'll probably be there anyway, for whatever else we need. read more

This place has been around for decades, mostly surviving off tourists who want to grab last minute items for the beach. It's always been sub par for the area and never a place to go for a kind greeting. A couple days ago, my young daughter wanted to go in so I said ok. Unfortunately we were met by the nastiest cashier, the guy with numerous face piercings. He was so outrageously rude, yelled at us for asking him a question. My daughter was actually scared of him. The other customers in the store were also shocked by his disgusting behavior. Thankfully, we decided to go across the street to the Cheese Shop to see if they had something similar. There, we were met by the most welcoming employee who helped us out and found something that fit the bill. I said for a $54 bottle of wine I can't get 3 cups? He responded rudely with " Do people give toilet paper away for free?" I was so taken back! This is like the perfect mini mart to go to for any of your last minute beach needs! They have souvenirs, liquor, boogie boards, snacks- but what brought us in was the ice cream. Grabbed a hot hazelnut latte from their coffee cart prior to hitting the beach. Convenient location for visitors and locals, just a block away from the sand on busy Avenida del Playa. Interior seems to be a grab and go convenience store, about as close to a grocery as you can get in this area. Cashier was playing on his phone when I entered. I had a few questions about their higher end (and WAY OVERPRICED bourbons)(gauge pricing)(Weller 12 $250!, 2019 George T. Stagg with a 40,000 bottle release $600!!) I asked to see the GTS because I wanted to see the proof (which tells you the year of release) and the cashier said "I'm not allowed to take it down." I ended up taking a picture and zooming in to read the proof. If it was an older version, I might have bought it, but a 40,000 release does not command that price. A lame excuse that (if it was older) cost him a sale. As it is, I'll never go back and I'll post to all my friends and followers to never step foot inside. I want to not only be the first to review the Neighbor-Saver Market but also thank this place for really being a savior for all the last minute stuff you need before you hit the beach and might have forgotten. Neighbor-Saver sounds like a cheesy name but it really is just a good, all-around place to make one last pit stop at before you go lounging over the boardwalk in the white sands and azure blue waters of La Jolla Shores Beach. It can get extremely busy during the summer but the lines move quickly. It is also hard to park, especially during peak crowded days at the beach, which is why I had to deduct 1 YELP STAR from the review. Since I usually stay on the outskirts of this popular beach to avoid crowds and thousands of kids running around, Neighbor-Saver is perfect for me. I try and park around the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club area and then walk down through the little shopping village there. My daughter absolutely loves the Gyros sandwiches at Neighbor-Saver and they sell frozen drinks there similar to Slurpees, which are perfect when it's hot. Neighbor-Saver Market is your one-stop shop for food, drinks and beach items. It is full-service here and offers a range of products including an ATM, alcoholic beverages for adults, surf & boogie- boards, hats, toys, souvenirs, t-shirts, post cards, necklaces and key chains. The store is family-operated and has been in existence since at least the 1970's. With all the four-frou fancy stores all over La Jolla, this simple, little Neighbor-Saver is surely a life-saver for frazzled beach-goers! read more

Amazing ice cream and waffle cone! The scoops were very generous and of course Thrifty's brand ice cream is really good but I felt like it was better than other Thrifty's ice cream I've had. The texture was amazing and it was fresh, meaning no ice or anything like that. The waffle cone tasted really fresh and crispy as well especially for it being a shop that doesn't seem to make waffle cones there. The customer service was also pretty good. read more

While staying at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club we stopped here to get directions and to pick up lottery tickets. The guy working was helpful and friendly. The shop was clean and conveniently located directly across the street from the Club. Not the best looking convenient store, some can say it looks more on the ghetto side, BUT it will definitely have all the snacks and alcohol you may need for the day! They have tons of snacks. They have almost every alcohol you can think of. Hard liquor, beer, wine, mixed drinks, even buzz balls. Only downfall is that parking here is REALLY TOUGH. Don't want to be too rude, but when I worked in the La Jolla Shores area, we had a nickname for this place where we changed "savor" to something that rhymed with "paper". That said, they are friendly, have a very big selection of things you might need if you are on vacation or just spending a day at the beach & forgot something. (they sell beach stuff like boogie boards, sand toys, etc in addition to normal convenience store items. ) It is in La Jolla, so you are paying a premium for the convenience, but that is to be expected. read more

And every time I needed anything I would go see this guy and he would have it. My family and I were having bound fires on the beach every night, and Perry would bring us wood ( he won't do it for you, only for me) that's the kind of business I like. It's a sad state of affairs when people who live and work in La Jolla Shores have no real grocery store at which to shop (now that the La Jolla Shores Market is closed, and not returning) and have to even consider this place. First of all, it's a filthy disorganized mess. It looks like someone randomly scattered unsold products from a warehouse throughout the store. The inventory is a mix of ripoffs for tourists and convenience store garbage food. Second, it's ancient and dirty. The canopy is so old, it still proudly advertises Kodak film. And the last time the floor saw a mop was 1987. The staff is a pathetic crew of degenerates who can't wait to get home. The neighborhood is desperate for a grocery story, but you should drive five miles to avoid this dump. Note to owner: Invest a few dollars. Have an ounce of pride. read more

I am a frequent La Jolla beach-goer. Everytime I'm there, I always stop by Neighbor Saver because I always forget things at home. Whether it be from charcoal for the grill or sun tan lotion, they have it! I even bought this cool little beats by dre speaker to play music on through bluetooth and a wireless phone charger for my phone. My story, and I am sticking to it... I went with my two girls (6-8) to meet some friends at the La Jolla Shores Park, and we were planning on having a bonfire, I promised to buy the wood for the bonfire so I stopped by "Neighbor-saver Food Market" located at Avenida Del La Playa, La Jolla to get the wood, the second I parked in front of the store I saw a bundle of wood sitting by the door, I tried to grab it when I noticed it was put on purpose to hold the door, so I looked inside and said:" Oops I apologize but do you have more inside?" Indicating that I found out it was to hold the door, and I didn't know that, the clerk from behind the counter said: "Yes we do have more here inside" and finished his sentence with an insult in Arabic calling me "Stupid" I speak Arabic, and I understood what he said so I said: "That was not nice, and unnecessary" only to see a younger guy coming at me from inside screaming and shouting: "Who are you pointing your finger at" and started to get in my face and then pushed me outside and tried to close the door saying he is not open any more, I tried to explain to him that was not nice of the clerk to say so because I apologized, but the younger guy kept screaming, and he said he is going to call the police, then he started taking pictures of me with his cellphone cursing, and saying words in a language I could not understand which I think was Chaldean language, but still he wanted to close the door, this is when an older guy twice my size came down the stairs from my side, and approached me asking what is going on, I explained to him what the clerk said, and I said in Arabic that was not nice because I didn't do anything wrong, but he said: "First I don't speak Arabic second when you pulled the wood bundle did the door push you?" I said: "Yes and that's why I apologized and asked if ..." But before I finish explaining to him he said: "He did, so what? Just F***k off" and he came at me with less than a feet from my face and he said: "What are you going to do about it?" and he became more and more challenging, and more aggressive until an older gentleman came and spoke to me in Arabic apologizing, and pushed the two guys away from me.. All of that and my two little girls standing there and crying hysterically, because from what they saw of bad attitude, and aggression from the store people they thought those people are going to hurt us.. I got into my car shaking but they followed me taking pictures for me and my car, when my kids saw them they started to cry more, and asked me to leave before these "Bad People" come to hurt us... read more

I bought a boogie board or body-board and returned it after 15 minutes because the leash was breaking and the rubber was all cracked. I am guessing it was stored for a long time. I asked to return the item (I had the receipt too) but the owner or cashier did not accept. I asked for a store credit but he was repeating "sales are final". I understand this policy as long as they do not sell broken items, very rude person. read more
