This place saved my life so many times when I didn't have health insurance. Even after the insurance finally kicked in and my husband got paid a living wage we would go here all the time because of how cheap some of their games are. I've never had to pawn anything, but I occasionally stop by pawnshops to look for good deals on musical instruments. I have checked this store periodically since it opened and never found ONE thing worth buying. Sometimes they have nice stuff, but overpriced. Sometimes it's inexpensive but in terrible shape. I suppose it's possible that you can find stuff worth purchasing here and it sells right away, but if so, I've never caught it. read more

I've been to some really great pawn shops (it's where I got my bass guitar in high school), but Pawn America is not one of them. My mind is truly boggled with how they stay in business - almost everything I looked at was priced higher than it is new in stores. For example - a used Kitchen Aid stand mixer was priced at $349; the same mixer retails at your average big box store for about $200. If it was new and unopened I could see $150, but I just don't understand the logic in pricing it at almost double its value. Same goes for their dSLRs. Also, randomly, their football jerseys. Curiosity had me bopping around the store doing random price checks. They have a pretty big selection of DVDs and CDs that are fairly priced - $2 for a used DVD seems normal. Their musical instruments seem pretty on point as well. Overall, though, you're probably better off reading the sale papers for deals on new items if you're looking to save a buck. read more

Pawn America doesn't know the value of their jewelry. I bought an engagement ring at Pawn America for $3000, when I got it appraised by a gemologist at a jewelry store because I needed a real appraisal for the insurance, it was appraised for $9000. They do not have actual gemologist's working, instead they have someone who was trained in jewelry, there is a difference. They priced the actual large diamond as a V1 but they priced the small diamonds as SI's . A gemologist instantly recognized that the small diamonds were also V1's, and there were 40 small diamonds, which is why the appraisal was $9,000.00, the gemologist told me that jeweler's usually try to put the same quality of diamonds in the surrounding ring. I will definitely go back but I wouldn't sell any of my jewelry there because they do not have a real gemologist working and will give you inaccurate information. read more

I was trying to pawn some computer monitors for a friend; figured this would be the fastest way to unload them. This was the first time I have ever tried to pawn something. It was one of the most depressing, demoralizing experiences I have had for a long time. There are numerous windows to sell your stuff, but only one was staffed, making for a long line of desperate-looking people, their bored, screaming children, and staff who looked like security guards or cops. I ended up abandoning my items there and leaving in frustration after almost a 30 minute period where the line did not move at all. F*** this horrible place. read more

As a customer who frequently pawns here, service used to be great. Line moves like clockwork. In and out. The pawn clerks at the counter have zero urgency, regularly stop to chat and crack jokes with one another while 30 people wait in line, and intentionally make eye contact with you just to rub it in your face how pathetic u are for waiting in the longest fricken line and your look of desperation for them to work more quickly will only make them slow down more. It's repulsive. Why do I keep coming back? Cuz they buy anything. It's an easy way to make a few bucks but am beginning to question my own sanity for continually coming back. read more

I go to Pawn America just to see what other people are discarding from their lives. One day I was browsing and I saw a Gene Cafe' coffee roaster new-in-box on one of the shelves for $99. I knew immediately this was a $500 roaster because I had been shopping them online the day before. Great bargain. Then I visited my green coffee bean distributor a few days later and found that a pallet of new Gene Cafe' roasters had been jacked from their loading dock the month before. It is hard to describe the feeling you get when inside inside Pawn America. At first you see the size of the place and think, I bet there are some treasures in here, but the more you walk around the more you start to feel like you're inside of a really big thrift store. The same things you see on the shelves inside thrift stores you see on the shelves inside Pawn America: kitchen appliances with parts missing. Electronics that may or may not work, computer accessories relevent in the 1990's, racks of unwashed clothing etc... To be fair, they do have nice things. They have a large collection of video games, dvds, and blue rays. I was actually in the market for a DVD but got a general sense of their prices and decided that spending the next hour of my time searching through un-alphabetized movie titles just wasn't worth it. They have a lot of point and shoot digital cameras and a bunch of 35mm camera lenses. If you're still impressed with 4 megapixels and use 35mm film cameras of course. So whats the difference between Pawn America and your average thrift store? Prices! You get a much better deal, for generally the same product, at a thrift store. At least that's the impression I get as a shopper. I haven't pawned anything at Pawn America, but I get the sense that if you have anything you are about throw away, take it to Pawn America first, you might get some cash for it, and to Pawn America, if you're going to put such a high resale value on your products, display them like they're worth the price. It's insulting to spend the time digging through your stuff only to find sticker shock. Its like everything in your store is something you forgot you had and now that its found, it's only worth selling if you get a lot of money for it. read more

I give this place a 3-star rating because it can be really hit or really miss. Some days, certain employees are working that are incredibly helpful and kind. Other days, rude employees are working that overprice anything. If you are buying a disc-based media, ALWAYS check the discs. Probably 30% of their stock is to scratched beyond repair. read more

Going out of Business about time they had real poor managers who knew nothing about how to treat customers

I have purchased a few things from the store in Madison. Mostly, I find what I want, see if it works, and ask for a fair price based on the stereo equipment's performance. Today, I looked at a older Technics amp. The fan did not work on the $60 for the unit and would not go down in price even though they put it back on the shelf w/o even noting the ventilation fan was blown. Some one is going to pruchase this unit and find out the unit heats-up and quits working. This is not correct business practices. The equipment is in rough shape for the most part, both internally and externally. About 60% of the equipment has cigarette smoke emitting from the internals. Speakers: Overall, the speaker area is always a mess. The employees handle the speakers very hard. The speakers are mostly scratchedl. Most of the surrounds are rotten on the older speakers, the dust caps on the woofers are all punched in on a majority of the speakers. About 30% of the dome tweeters are damaged. The speakers either have no grills or the cloth and/or the frame are damaged. No deal on the speakers even with blown tweeters and rotten surrounds. The workers have no clue about stereo equipment. The testing area is essentially nothing. They can never find speaker wire. They try to hook up speakers when power is coming out of the outputs. Overall, a novice should be very careful if you purchase equipment from Pawn America. Most of the equipment that I have looked at has internal issue that a professional needs to repair. There are better alternatives. to purchase stereo equipment from this overpriced store. I have been unimpressed by the quality of the personel, quality of the equipment and the excessive cost of the individual units. read more

WOW. Sold me a tv with a broken screen. It had no power cord but I was willing to buy one. Took it to bestbuy to find a power cord, they pugged it in and the screen was all sorts of colors like it had been punched. Anytime someone can look you in the eye and sell you something broken, they can't be trusted and its bad business.They even said it was tested.. dont recommend this place!! Many Blu-ray discs for $3 and all DVDs were 2 for $1 last weekend. The staff is helpful, although it is sometimes slow in finding a checkout clerk. Shop carefully and you can find real bargains. Pawning items can take a lot of time if you go when there is a long line. I go shortly after they open and it isn't a problem. read more

Great store and great customer service, with one exception. If you ever get the broker with the glasses and the slicked blonde hair, don't even bother. One day wanted to buy 3 DVD's - unfortunately had forgotten I didn't have cash on me, only credit. the sale was refused per policy stating "no sale without ID" for credit cards. I was unaware of the policy, although I understand many stores practice this. Anybody with GOOD customer service skills (and common sense) would have let me purchase them and politely explained the policy for future reference. Not being rude and condescending, as he had. Terrible place to do any kind of business with. They put junk items on eBay and take deceptive pictures that don't show key missing parts. They then refuse to help you in any way and are very rude about their fraudulent business practices. Just check the local BBB to see their complaints. I will be filing one today. read more
