Complete waste of time. I explained in a very detailed way what I wanted done to my rings, what the material was, and why I was unhappy with the previous work. I was told they have the best jeweler around and come on down. Drove two hours to get told they can't help me because the exact details I gave over the phone prevent it. I was also told I should just accept substandard work because it's actually not substandard, it's really good work (it's not). The prices are fair, they are honest and take the time to show you the issues. This last time, I walked in needed a watch fitted, and the team kindly had it timed out perfectly on when to return (15 mins) without waiting too long. Under the heading of "you can't make this up" my husband and I both found ourselves in Madison with dead batteries in our watches. A quick online search lead us to Goodman's so we walked over from our hotel after check in. We were greeted quickly and both of our watches were professionally serviced and back in working order at a very reasonable price. As I was waiting, I checked out the selection. I called Goodman's Jewelers to ask if they replaced batteries in Tissot watches. I specified that it was waterproof, so it requires a special key, and was told they could complete the battery replacement. I dropped that watch off, along with another one, over a week ago. Just received a call from them saying the other watch is done. It was not until I inquired about the Tissot watch that I was told "we can't do that one. I recommend you take it to a Tissot dealer." The manager, who I asked to speak with, then told me, "I wasn't able to look at it until 10 minutes ago." I asked him why, when I called and mentioned it was waterproof and required a special key, then mentioned it again when it dropped it off, I was told twice they could complete the replacement, just to have the watch sit there for an entire week before being told they cannot do that work. He didn't seem to have an answer. The customer service is lacking at best. read more

In August 2020 I purchased a RADO watch for $1,000 - with a 2 year warranty. In September 2022 the battery was replaced by The Time Center in Middleton, WI. It was OK for a couple months but stopped working. I took the watch to Goodman's Jewelers. They said the watch was ruined because The Time Center replaced the battery and that I should have brought it to them for the battery replacement. They never told me they needed to replace the battery. It cost $225 to have the watch repaired. I feel that Goodman's Jewelers should have told me about that requirement when I bought the watch. I came to Goodman's the first time around with a friend to pick up a birthday present for her mom. I think we must have gone through all of the diamond jewelry available in the store...but the lady helping us out was just as friendly and patient with us at the end as she was in the beginning. Really, the customer service is great! The second time, I came to Goodman's to get my watch band replaced. The replacement itself was free and super quick. I only paid for the band. A man does not buy many engagement rings in his life. I've planned to only purchase one. So when walking into Goodman's to pick out something my future wife would wear for the rest of her life, I was nervous. The staff at Goodman's was excellent. None of those "how much do you love her" lines that would have sent me straight out the door. They showed me a wide range of stones and settings and very quickly we had something with which I was very pleased. Never once felt pressured. Granted, I don't buy much jewelry so I don't have much background with which to rate Goodman's. I do know that they made one nerve-wracking and life-defining purchase all that easier. read more

We were very impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of the staff at Goodmans. We went in at Christmas time with a 9 month old baby and a 3 year old. We were looking for a small locket for their grandmother and had been unable to find one at anywhere else. Goodmans had a selection of designs to choose from and we found just what we were looking for. They were exceptionally kind to our children going above and beyond to keep them entertained while we shopped. I have actually never been in Goodmans but they have a great reputation in the Madison community, so I recommended the place for my boyfriend to go for Christmas. :) He picked out the most beautiful white gold and garnet earrings and necklace set, just gorgeous. I get compliments all the time. But mainly, I'm writing this review because a few weeks later, he got a "thank you" card in the mail that had a handwritten message on the inside, something like "Thank you for letting us help you make your holiday special," something like that. I was so super impressed with that personal touch that I will recommend them to anyone. How many mall stores will do that for you? We will definitely go back - at least he will! :D read more

For a small fee, they gladly sized my son's watch and even let him know he could return for a free adjustment. I went to the National Rarities buying event hosted by Goodman's. I had a total of 7 necklaces and bracelets to sell. National Rarities told me that two of the items were 10 carat gold. They offered me $675 for all 7 items. I went to 2 local dealers who confirmed that all the items were 14 carat gold. I ended up selling all 7 items to a local dealer for $1,626. I also had a very nice diamond ring. The National Rarities buyer told me that it was not a diamond but cubit zirconia. Both local dealers confirmed that the ring contained high quality diamonds. read more

I've had two experiences here. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable on both occasions, well exceeding my expectations. My first visit was for glasses repair. I had snapped the bridge of a pair of frames. On the recommendation of a nearby businesss I took them to Goodman's to see if they could solder them back together while I awaited new ones. The person who assisted me was very honest, informing me that success would depend on the alloy in the frames. She said they would give it a try and if it didn't work there'd be no charge. I received a call the next morning saying they had been successful and my glasses were ready to be picked up. The cost was less than $50. By coincidence, I was also planning to propose to my now fiancé around this time and after some additional research went back to Goodman's to find an engagement ring. I am legally blind and knew that customer service would be the real key to finding the right piece. My experience and others' reviews said Goodman's would be the right place. I was not disappointed. I was warmly greeted and found myself sitting in front of a gentleman who turned out to be the owner. My visual impairment means I need lots of good light and magnification to see small details and this was readily available. Equally important, John went out of his way to describe each ring we looked at in great detail, using accurate, precise language and pointing out things I might miss. When you grow up blind, you learn to appreciate that ability when possessed by people you do business with. I had plenty of time to examine things myself and to make decisions. I think John spent over 2 hours with me and there was zero pressure. I came in with a loose diamond that has been in my family for 3 generations and is at least 100 years old. Its sentimental value to me was appreciated, as well as my desire to set it in a ring that would suit an older diamond well, but also protect it from the active life-style of the woman whose finger it would be on. We discussed this along with a few other considerations of taste and so on, and I was presented with a great selection of carefully chosen rings that met my criteria but also gave me plenty of options, including things I'd never have thought of asking about. The ring we ended up with was incredible. My fiancé and I are thrilled with it. It's unique and friends and family, both young and old, have had only good things to say. I couldn't ask for better service after purchase either. The ring was ready for me to pick up in less than 2 days. I would never expect that kind of turn around time and certainly wouldn't hold them to it, but I was impressed. It allowed me to propose before we left town for the holidays, instead of waiting until after we returned, which was my original plan. Thaht meant she got to show it to her family in person. We needed to have it resized once we got back home, and again Goodman's impressed, having it back to us in less than 24 hours, well before the time they'd promised. My expectations, and my fiance's, have been exceeded at every turn in our dealings with Goodman's. They seem to be a business that focuses on quality and service. My husband's recent weight loss required he needed a new Titanium wedding ring. We entered Goodmans knowing exactly what we wanted. We explained to the female jeweler we needed a titanium wedding band. She immediately launched into a detailed and graphic description of my husband's finger needing to be cut off in an emergency by paramedics. So much for a romantic experience buying a new wedding band. She was more than willing to sell us a much more expensive gold band. The moment was more than gone and, we left. I have done some research since then and discovered her horror stories are not true. This is a scam used by jewelers to sell people more expensive jewelry. My husband has purchased much more expensive jewelry for me at Goodmans. We have gone there because we thought they we a trustworthy, local jeweler. Apparently, this is not true. We will go back to our jeweler in Kansas City for future purchases. read more

I've been in to Goodman's twice, and neither was a great experience. The first was when my fiancee and I needed to get my engagement ring resized. We came in with an 18k white gold ring from a well known international maker, and the first person to help us sniffed and said "we don't work in SILVER." As if we don't know what our ring is. The second time I was in trying to pick out a watch. Maybe if you're in the market for a Rolex this is the place for you. But the person who helped me thought my budget was plus or minus $500, and they didn't have a great selection in my range. read more

I had two WONDERFUL experiences at Goodman's this week. On Tuesday, I brought my Grandma's wedding ring in to be checked. It needed minor repairs and I was a little emotional at leaving it. They had told me it might be two weeks, but they finished it in two days! On Thursday (after I picked up the ring), I got another ring stuck on my finger and the nurse on call said it had to come off asap. Goodman's stayed open late for me, gently cut the ring off, wouldn't accept payment, and were incredibly sweet and generous about the whole thing. Customer for life right here. :) read more

Service with a smile! I came in on a weekday around 5 p.m. needing my watch battery replaced, fully expecting to have to return in a day or two to pick it up. They changed it while I waited, in less than 10 minutes, for $8. Why take a chance having this done at a discount store when you can take it to experts? Highly recommended. read more

I went into Goodman's to look at engagement rings so that my boyfriend would know what I liked (he asked me to since he had no idea). When I went in everyone was nice and polite. I got to try on the ring I had been drooling over online and the sales associate wrote down all my information and the information of what rings, size, etc I specifically liked. However, my boyfriend went to the store twice both times with the intentions of purchasing an engagement ring and twice came back empty handed! The first time they could not find any of the information they had taken from me about what rings I wanted so my boyfriend had to get out his laptop and try and show them. Once he did they asked him so many follow up questions and tried to get him to purchase a bigger diamond that he left confused and had to ask me to clarify for him every detail of what I had wanted. So on his second trip he went in with every single spec on the ring I wanted, and still ended up with nothing. He was told the manufacturer (Hearts on Fire) no longer makes that ring in a smaller carat size so he would have to order either a larger diamond or a square cut diamond to go in it - the manufacturer's website had the exact ring I wanted on their website available to ship in two weeks! We wanted to purchase it locally which is why we didn't buy online but it was there. After coming back home again empty handed my boyfriend who had wanted some element of surprise to all of this had to ask me more follow up questions on the ring and together we just decided that if we couldn't get what we needed there we would have to try somewhere else. That same day we ended up going to another local jeweler who sold us the exact ring I wanted (it does exist!). I had very high hopes but overall our experience was disappointing. read more

My watch's battery gave out recently, so I went to the mall store where it was purchased to get it replaced. First, it got sent off to their in-house watch smith for repair. Then, I got the phone call telling me that it wasn't just the battery, oh no. The whole watch had to be rebuilt and resealed in addition to the battery. Total cost: $225!! (This isn't a watch that I abuse or submerge or anything like that. This watch is for work or for going out.) After waiting a couple weeks for a repair, and then a couple weeks more to get it back - after persuading the store that no, I did NOT want it sent to the manufacturer for yet another opinion - I brought this watch to Goodmans today. I explained the situation and asked if they could help me. Seven minutes later, my watch had a new battery and was working perfectly. Total cost : $10 plus tax. Skip the mall stores, skip the mall repair kiosks. The next time I need a watch, I will be returning to Goodman's Jewelers. And so should you. read more

I've never written a Yelp review before, but had such a positive experience at Goodman's this week that I decided it was important to pay it forward. In essence, I purchased a gift certificate at Goodman's so my husband could get his wedding band re-sized (we had purchased his ring out of state). Unfortunately, I didn't realize that his band was made of palladium until we went in together and learned that Goodman's does not work on that particular metal. Kristen was very helpful and pointed us to another jeweler, who was able to do the re-sizing for us. And although Goodman's usually is not able to refund gift certificates, she went out of her way to make special arrangements with the other jeweler so our gift certificate could apply there instead. I thought this was truly above and beyond in terms of service and simple kindness. We will definitely go back for non-palladium jewelry needs in the future! read more

My husband and I have been married almost 2 years. We'd had a sweet yet humble wedding and decided at the time to skip the wedding band for my engagement ring (which he got at Goodman's). Recently, I realized it would mean a lot to me to have a wedding band. So yesterday we stopped by Goodman's just to look and were greeted by Laura who was lovely, full of information and extremely helpful. We've always had positive experiences here and yesterday was no exception. Laura found that there's a wedding band made specifically for my engagement ring so she brought it out and OMG, we were sold. They let us put down some money down to keep it on layaway and their policy, since 1933, is that you pay whatever you can monthly until it's paid off (whether it's $1 or $100 or...). Another big plus is that Goodman's purchases their diamonds with a conscience. They visit the mines & talk with the workers to ensure that all stones purchased are nonconflict diamonds. And part of every purchase goes toward a good cause. Go to Goodman's. You won't regret it. read more

My fiancé and I came to Goodman's for our wedding bands. We had been to a couple other big name jewelry stores and were baffled by how we were completely ignored. I don't know if it was because we look young for our age or if they noticed we already had an engagement ring (the big dollar sale). Regardless, we left those places pretty ticked. But as soon as we walked into Goodman's we were happy with how friendly the staff was and they created us immediately. We dealt with a salesman named Art and really hit it off with him. We just received a thank you card in the mail personally from him with a hand written message and were moved to right a great review of the store and if Art. Goodman's had a smart selection than some of the other big name stores, but the quality of each piece showed they truly hand picked items to display rather than just putting out less nice items alongside the finer jewelry. Quality in this case, is much better than quantity. The only thing I would say about Goodman's is its probably slightly more expensive than other stores. But again, you can't put a price tag on customer service, and with how clueless we were about what we were looking for, I would have paid even more for Art's expertise and patience. We are not the easiest people to deal with when it comes to big purchases, mainly because we want to try everything before deciding. But Art was witty and quick with jokes. We really hit it off with him and we could not have asked for a better salesman to help us with picking our wedding rings. Thank you Art and Goodman's! read more

Several months ago, I broke my gold chain and brought it in to Goodman's to be repaired. It was a good experience and they were lovely to work with. However, a few months later (after wearing the chain very little), it broke again in the same spot. I brought it back to Goodman to have it repaired again. Two weeks after picking it up, it has now broken a third time in the same spot and this time the pendant, which is very special to me and is irreplaceable, fell off and is lost. The chain was a sturdy one and there is no reason for this to have happened again. I couldn't be sadder about losing the pendant and there is no reason for it. Despite the good service, they did a poor job repairing the necklace, plain and simple. I will not be going back. What a shame. read more

This is not really a review of the store itself, but of a repair. My partner bought me an expensive (for us), necklace for me 2 years ago. It was a pendant and a chain. At around 15 months, the clasp on the chain broke. It's not a chain I wear very often so didn't think about it for a couple of months. My partner recently dropped it off, both of us assuming it would be free or minimally priced replacement. We were shocked when we picked it up as the price to put a new ( very small) clasp on this 1 1/2 year old chain was 85% of the original price. In questioning this, the sales person simply said, "well she signed for it." We would have bought a clasp at a hobby store and replaced it ourselves had we not anticipated they would have stood behind their product. All of this could have been avoided if the salesperson would have quoted or estimated a repair price up front. The owner was standing right there and offered nothing. The chain itself was faulty, the price for the repair was ridiculous and all around the situation was handled poorly. I can't see myself going back which is too bad because we try and keep our dollars local and support State Street businesses as much as we can. read more

My wife and I purchased a set of earrings, choosing both the stones and settings from a catalog. The sales clerk, Kathy, could not have been more helpful and friendly - left thinking we would be exchanging Christmas cards. A week or so later we picked up the earrings, not thrilled but we took them home for a week. Finally my wife said," I just don't like them". We went back to Kathy last Saturday to return the earrings and she could not have been ruder. We told her we would never buy anything sight unseen without the option of being able to return them. She went on to say we didn't opt for the stone warranty or the setting coverage - things total irrelevant to a return policy. I said, whoa, that just went over my head. She turned and not thinking we heard and said, "That doesn't surprise me". She did process our return, but any intention of ever buying something from her or Goodman's is no longer the case. My wife and I were astonished at her attitude and lack of professionalism. Just because I returned an item doesn't mean we wouldn't buy something else.
