Think twice when you book with Payless! I had prepaid for a Jeep Cherokee or similar, but was downgraded to a Nissan model that would have cost less if I had initially prepaid for this Nissan model. Upon check-in (and during booking process) I continuously declined insurance AND was not informed of the $39/day fee for a second driver. The car also had a low-air tire that we had to refill ourselves. Upon reviewing extra bill charges I find an insurance fee and extra driver fees. During a call today, Payless Customer Service refused to refund the $150 in extra charges for insurance and the second driver fee, which I never agreed to. read more

Probably most people think all rental car companies are the same, but like most things they are not. I left my cell phone in my rental and realized it after taking my flight home 3 hours later. They never found it and it never turned up as reported. You get what you pay for at Payless (as the title states). If you could care less about good customer service and the condition of the car and more about cost, rent from Payless. I care about cost, but I will never rent from Payless again. This is the 2nd time and again the customer service was subpar and the car should have been sold at auction. When I arrived in Nashville, the unfriendly girl at the counter told me to wait a minute while she placed a phone call. Another young lady noticed my frown and told her she could wait on the phone call since I was the only one in line. She reluctantly stated she would help me. When I got my car in the dank, dark bowels of the parking garage I used the flashlight on my phone and noticed a rusty dent on the hood. I pointed this out to the girl at the gate as I was exiting but she seemed to care less. When I finally got into daylight, I noticed the disgusting condition of the passenger seat (picture attached). Once I arrived at my destination the back seat was just as bad. This is not an anomaly. I rode with a coworker for the week as I was too embarrassed to have anyone in my car. He also rented from Payless and had similar stains in the front and back of his car. We both stated not again. We will stick with Avis or Hertz in the future. read more

They have a deal where you prepay for a tank of gas but the charge for the gas is refunded if you bring the car back full. I brought the car back with a full tank and dropped it off. Needless to say, i didn't get the refund. Have filled out two tickets outlining my issue and have received "nada". Not even a "we got your complaint and we'll work on it when we can" message. I rented a car for use during maintenance on my personal vehicle. I didn't know how long the maintenance would take, so I booked the rental for one week. When renting the car, I inquired about the '$34 daily rate' listed on my receipt. The representative at the counter said that the daily rate would be charged if I return the vehicle early. Turns out that the maintenance didn't take a whole week, so I returned the rental after three days. I was charged the 'weekly rate' when I returned the car. I contacted customer service about this, and after several days they replied that I 'had been charged correctly.' This is completely unacceptable. I probably would have kept the car the full week if the representative hadn't mentioned being charged the daily rate. Made reservations for a SUV with Payless Car Rental in early April for my trip to Nashville, TN on April 26th. My flight arrived 20 minutes late to Nashville so I was about 30 minutes behind on picking up my car rental from Payless. The counter representative said that he had my reservation but he did not have any SUV in stock. When asked what was the point in making a reservation in the first place, he stated that making a reservation at a car rental company is the same as if you made a reservation for dinner. His analogy of the two concepts blew me away. The only vehicle he had was a pick up truck but it would be at a higher rate then what I had reservations for. He made no concessions, offer no apology and told me I could wait until one became available. When asked when that would be his response was "when one is returned back to the terminal. Stay clear of Payless in Nashville if you don't want to be surprised as I was. Even if they would offer me a free vehicle for my next visit to Nashville I wouldn't take it. Payless Car Rental in Phoenix is the worst scam and thief business ever. I flew into Phoenix and rented a vehicle from Payless to drive to Yuma, due to my mother being put into Hospice (soon after she passed away). The vehicle which was originally rented for $285.00...after taxes the price went to $389.00. I rented the vehicle from October 4th, 2019 to October 9th, 2019 and I turned the vehicle in one day early, with a full tank of gas. Upon leaving the vehicle and having the trolley drop me off at Terminal 3...I noticed that the individual checking in my vehicle docked me for only a half tank of gas and extra costs of $87.00 plus. The rental vehicle now cost me $463.03...and Payless Customer services will not answer any of my questions...Oh! and one more thing...I had to borrow a substantial amount of money to get down to Arizona...Do not rent from Payless at Sky Harbor in Phoenix...if you do...make sure you check your receipt before you leave. I have seen the various reviews. When I booked they has the best price. If another company is within in a couple of dollars do not go with Payless. But if not... be prepared and know what you are doing. They will start with the hard sell of extra full coverage insurance that you do not need since most credit cards, as well as your own auto insurance already provide l. Next they will try to get you to upgrade your car, for allot more money. Then they try to charge you for a full tank of gas when you return the car, even though you declined this option. You have to go back to the rental car counter and get a credit. So build this into your time table when you return the car. If I could, I would put zero stars. I was traveling on business and booked with Payless through a third party website. I arrived at the Payless desk precisely at the time I had reserved the car. While I was there promptly on time, the SUV that I had reserved was not ready. I had to wait close to an hour for the car to be located and readied. While waiting, I had to listen to the staff at the counter complain about the staff in the garage. So unprofessional. I had the car a week. When out and about I needed to charge my phone. I went to slide the top of the console open to reach the adapter and literally could not as it was stuck. I had to pull over, get out of the seat, and use both hands to yank it open. Clearly something sticky had been spilled which had caused that problem. I had to do this every single time I wanted to charge my phone. It was a major pain. I had purchased the pre-paid gas option, that way I could bring the car back empty and not worry about filling it up on my way back. I brought the car back half full. The car attendant made a mistake and marked that I brought the car back completely full, thus giving me a full refund on the gas I had purchased. When I noticed this, I walked completely out of my way to the Payless counter to correct the situation (I still had a plane to catch, mind you). The attendant corrected the mistake, and did not issue me the refund. He did proceed to charge me for the full tank, even though I brought it back half full, citing that that was part of the agreement in doing the pre-paid gas option (which I guess was in the small print that I failed to read). So, basically, having a conscience and wanting to do the right thing ended up costing me money. Obviously I was really upset over the whole experience and called Payless a week after returning home. The person who answered the phone seemed less than pleasant in wanting to help me or even start a complaint ticket. As I have been writing back and forth with Payless as they have been working on the ticket, I have become very, very frustrated. At one point they took over a week to respond to me, with no apology or explanation. When I asked to speak with a manager, I was denied the opportunity. They are refusing me the 50% reimbursement that I am requesting for my time and trouble. At this point I have written to the president of the company (I googled him). I am also going to contact the BBB (they have a "F" rating on there, BTW). I have been so disappointed in the customer service I have received. Learn from my mistake, and do not rent from them. Spend a little more money and skip the hassle. I travel a lot for business and will not be renting from them again, not will my company. read more

This is the most distressing review I have ever written. Yesterday, in the middle of the caronavirus crisis, we returned our rental car to PBI. We pulled up in the line and the Payless attendant came over, opened the driver's side door and before my wife had a chance to exit the vehicle, stuck his head in the car to read the odometer. I told him to back away and he gazed at me with a quizzical look. I then yelled at him to back off and when I asked if he had ever heard of social distancing he reluctantly did so. If you don't know that Payless is owned by Budget, you are in for a wild ride before you ever get behind the wheel of your rental car. All the rental car company's signage at Nashville Airport (Hertz, Avis, Budget, etc.) are prominently displayed in the airport terminal except Payless. It is non existent. So after looking and looking we proceeded to the multi story garage where the cars are. It is not a short walk. Again, every company's signage is in your face in the garage elevator lobby and on every level of the garage - - except Payless. It took nearly an hour of wandering after arriving to discover that Payless is owned by Budget and that is where we needed to go. By this time we were a little pissed after all the walking around hauling our luggage and sweating. The staff at Budget were unsympathetic, to say the least. Actually, they were downright hostile. We got to our assigned car, loaded it up, started it up, only to find it had 1/8th of tank of gas. So we drove to the Budget shed and asked the cheerful agent to have the car gassed up. Their explanation was that they only rent about one Payless car per day - - as if that should make us feel better. If that is the case, maybe Budget should eliminate Payless completely. So the agent says let me make a notation that the tank is not full. I told him I am not about to gas up on the front end and again when we return the car. So they give us a different car with a full tank, we transfer the bags and off we go. Returning the car with a full tank was seamless and efficient. Today I got our statement by email and I was charged an additional $119.88 for fuel. Until I retired, I worked in a service business and I am not entirely comfortable writing such a critical review. But I would advise any car renter to be afraid - - be very afraid and do not rent from Payless, or from Budget for that matter. read more

I would give them 0 stars if I could post that way but since I must give them a star rating it is 1. wish I would have done my research a little better about this company before I rented with them as I would have been able to avoid the headache that has come from this experience. Do yourself a favor and pay the extra money for a car with a better rental company. There were unauthorized charges made to my credit card account. They made this charge, AFTER I had already paid in full for the car and dropped the car off. I couldn't get a hold of anyone at the airport to find out what the charges were for and had to make MULTIPLE calls to the "customer service" line. Once I finally got a copy of the invoice to see what the charges were, I found it was for PDW which I had declined along with all other insurance when I picked up the rental. I was told that I could start a dispute and I would have an answer within 42-78 (2-3 days) hours and should see the refund in that time to my account. It has been 5 days and I haven't heard from anyone so to add to the inconvenience of this entire ordeal I had to call and cancel my credit card and request a new one and start a dispute with them. This entire ordeal has been an ABSOLUTE nightmare and I wouldn't wish this upon even my worst enemy. I will NEVER recommend or use Payless Car Rental ever again. I filled out the customer satisfaction survey that they sent me and the response at the end of the survey is completely laughable because based on all of the reviews that I have read, dating back up to 4 years ago, they don't do anything to make improvements to the company. WORST car rental company ever! They are SCAMMERS! We rented a car for 4 days in Nashville, we declined the car insurance like we always do and they told us that because we had to wait about 45 minutes to even get our car (because they were low on cars, even though we booked 2 months in advance) that they would give us a discount. We come to find out when we return the car that they tacked on car insurance and discounted the price of the car that had the insurance on it. Long story short...we paid $310 ($285 with said discount) for a car that should have cost us $180 and they did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT IT when we returned the car. It was their mistake and we had to pay for it. We specifically said NO INSURANCE and they charged us for it anyway. I have a plane to catch so they give me # to manager stating he is aware of the situation and to call him. I call from the gate only to be told "he is off today." Payless is awful!!! They took my reservation online, but then after I flew in they informed me that they wouldn't accept my card. I had already been charged. The attendant, Julius, was rude. He refused to give me the customer service number, refused to get his manager, and basically would not look up from his cell phone to speak to me. After I got on the phone with customer service the person I spoke to was helpful and processed my refund, but he didn't care about customer retention and he didn't try to keep my business anyway. And to make things even worse after my refund was processed I was recharged the same amount minus 2 dollars from Payless so I still have to deal with this joke of a company. The lady working there highlights places for you to initial and rushes you to sign but be aware you are signing that they can charge you for things you do not need. Also be aware that they require you to show your insurance card if you do not purchase theirs. Bottom line.. Save your time (in our case over an hour and were only 3rd in line) and money and go with a different company. I was charged more then the agreed price because my flight got delayed and I picked up the car a couple hours late. The car was dirty and still had trash from the previous user, and the stains that were in the car were nasty. On top of that I could not get them on the phone to tell me why their name is not listed on the companies in the rental return. As I'm checking in at the rental counter, the gentleman goes through all of the normal optional upcharges which I declined. Then he starts telling me about another charge, WHICH IS A MANDATORY, PER DAY, CHARGE. It increased my total bill by 45%!! I slowly backed away and, in about one minute on my iphone, had rented a comparable car from Alamo for $4 less than the original Payless quote, plus NO additional fees. Although I reserved the car without collision insurance, because I have this through my personal car insurance, this was not an option when I arrived. Therefore they double the cost of my car. When I got to my hotel, I review the bill and saw this, I called them and was told I choose to add this coverage and that they were unable to change this without me driving back to the airport, which wasn't an option as I was in town for business. Also, when I picked up my car I was told I was too tall to fit in the car I got and I needed to upgrade, which was a lie. When I contacted customer service about this issue they neglected to address my specific complaints and instead told me again that I had the option to not purchase the insurance, which was not the case when I rented the car. Today, we had a horrible experience at Payless Car Rental. We were waiting in line while an African-american customer was demanding for the car she had reserved. The employee could not find the car and had trouble getting the customer what she wanted. The African-american lady asked to speak to the manager and the situation escalated when the Payless Employee told the customer she would call the police on her. This is yet again, another incident of racism in America. I cannot believe customer services turned into a threat to call the police! I booked an SUV, Ford Explorer or similar, weeks in advance. When I arrived in Nashville, I got into line and waited. There was one person currently being helped and two others in line. No big deal. I was so excited to get my car and make my two hour journey to Kentucky. After 15 - 20 minutes later, the first person was finally finished. Weird? Must have been an issue with their reservation. But then it happened with the both parties in front of me? What the heck? After over an hour, I have finally arrived at the counter to be informed that there are no SUVs available. Excuse me? That's what I reserved and I never received an email, phone call, etc informing me otherwise. Supposedly, all the SUVs were getting serviced. Then, I was told that I could rent an SUV from their partner and when I asked if it would be the same amount, they told me, "No, it would be about $60 more." My other option was to rent their Focus. It did cost less than what I was quoted for the SUV, but that is not what I reserved. I received no apology for my inconvenience, only the counter man scoffing at me saying, "Well, did you NEED an SUV?" That's not really the point, is it? I don't think I NEED to explain myself to him. That is what I reserved and what I expected. I was not offered any discounts for my inconvenience or an upgrade to a better vehicle for no extra charge. The paperwork process was extreme too. I had already filled out everything online and then we had to go over everything again. I also received a dirty car. I was very disappointed with this company and would never rent from them again. Thought it was a decent deal until I got to the counter and dicovered that there was an extra $5.49+ mandatory "add on" charge (plus tax)to the rental, which made it more expensive than their competitors. Increased the total cost about 20% from what I prepaid. Not disclosed in the price online. Great opportunity for a class action suit, if you ask me! I made them take it back and rented elsewhere for $50 less than original price. they did make me wait a long time to resolve it. My worst car rental experience ever. Do not be lured by their low online price. I had a reservation for a full size car and prepaid it online. When I arrived, I waited in line for 40 minutes because of their slow service. When I finally got to the counter, the clerk said they did not have a full size car and I had two options, either I pay extra per day to upgrade to an SUV or he could cancel my reservation. I asked if they had any midsize, compact size or economy size car available because I just needed to get a car to make it to my appointment. He said no. He was rude and insisted it was their company policy either I pay for an upgrade or no car and said he could not help me. I could not believe such horrible business practice so I stepped aside to call their customer service, which was of no help and totally useless. I called twice and they would not resolve the situation but gave me a local number to call but nobody ever picked up the phone and no voicemail service, either. I missed my business appointment after being stranded for 1 1/2 hours at the airport and when I walked back to the counter, the clerk did not even try to find me a car, he took a look at me and immediately said he was cancelling my reservation without my consent and he called the airport security. From the other reviews I read, I realized it seemed to be their routine practice to call the cops when they didn't have a car or did not want to honor the reservation for their customers. I was shocked from such treatment from Payless. Still shaken, I went to rent from another company then two cops came up to me after the clerk told them whatever lies, they took my driver's license as if I was a criminal and causing further delay. All I needed was to get a car to get to where I needed to be like anybody else but Payless ruined it. On top of that, I ended up having to pay $100 extra to rent a smaller car from another company because I didn't have a prepaid reservation with them and that was the discounted counter price they gave me after discovering the situation I was in. The other car rental company did not agree with such customer service practice from Payless. It has been more than a week and I have not received the refund on what they charged me. I hope nobody ever gets treated like this. Maybe check first with your car rental company what their policy is if they don't have a car you have a reservation number for. I expected they should have a car available when the reservation was made in advance and even if they don't have a full size car I reserved, they should have some smaller size cars available. But no, Payless did not provide a car but called the cops to intimidate their customer. I never rented from Payless before this incident and I never will. I realized it doesn't matter if their price came up the lowest from Priceline, it's not worth it. My husband and I had a car accident and had to have our car towed to the dealership after hours, which is when we were forced to try renting a car at the only place open- the airport. Payless was the cheapest option, so we made a reservation with for a car. After having our car towed and then catching an Uber to the airport, we tried to pick up the rental car. We were refused due to our lack of a credit card, even though we could have paid with our debit card. We did not forsee this event, and did not plan ahead to have to rent a car after a double shift in a warehouse and therefore were not carrying a credit card. We explained our situation to the clerk on duty, and we're met with utter indifference. We asked to speak with a manager, a call was made that went to voice mail, a message left and we waited. Someone called back, and the clerk informed us that no exception would be made. The manager couldn't even be bothered to show their face out of courtesy. Talk about customer service. I understand corporate policy, blah blah blah. That is no excuse for treating two people in a situation they could not have for seen nor had any control over like they were being ridiculous by asking to be able to pay money to a company directly from their bank account for services rendered. So not only would I recommend not dealing with this branch of payless rentals, I would recommend taking your business elsewhere entirely.
