Peabody's has been open since 1967, wow! I lived nearby and went to an L7 show here when I lived Oceanfront in Virginia Beach. I didn't frequent Peabody's since I have never been a person who loves dancing or DJs. Also, I was outside of Peabody's target demographic of 18-24 year-olds. This was during my "bitter chick rock" phase that still rears its head now and then, and one of my favorite bitter chick bands was L7! I saw their show at Peabody's on April 15, 1997. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a great venue for this raw, bitter, loud band with a house packed and standing room only of fans trying their best to make a mosh pit.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I guess Hole was my second favorite bitter chick band. Back to the L7 show. Classified as grunge, punk, and metal, I think L7 is more chick punk. Their guitarist was unavailable this night, and they replaced her with a local Va Beach chick guitarist who did a great job. The locals recognized her, I didn't. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Smoking was allowed inside, and this audience was pretty aggressive for the times, with a lot of college aged guys wearing backwards baseball caps.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] That's fine, until the guys use their ballcaps as weapons to poke me in the forehead and face to try to keep me out of their mosh pit making range. The goal of the audience was to get to stage front. The audience even resorted to using cigarette lighters to burn each others clothes. Who does this? This show was during "The Beauty Process" tour and the setlist was great with songs from previous CDs including "L7" and other previous music. Par for the course, during "Cat-O-Nine Tails," a guy in leather bondage was brought on stage and then whipped with a whip by Donita, the lead singer. I'm confident this was just a show, and the poor guy wasn't hurt. "The Masses are Asses" is another L7 tune I like. Why no fifth star? The bouncers were interesting. They waited for patrons to make their way to the stage and for the most part, escorted the patron to the door - kicking nearly each one out. The crowd was "elbow to elbow" making it clear it was difficult to just take an overly rowdy and rough patron from the center of the crowd to kick them out. Still, the bouncers were sophomoric, and should have managed the crowd better. I came here this weekend for a margarita festival--it was my first time at his place, and honestly, I left disappointed. The staff, particularly the waitresses, came off as indifferent and borderline rude at times, not exactly welcoming for a first-time guest. The drinks were mediocre at best. I can't remember the last time I came to Peabody's. I can say, that it wasn't for the food that brought me there, till now! They recently started AYCE Thursdays, that included pizza, wings, crab legs and shrimp and I was excited to check it out. I was a little skeptical, because how good could "club food" be? Luckily I was wrong. We came in around 8 pm and the seats were nearly filled as we waited about 5-10 minutes for a table. While waiting we grabbed a few drinks at the bar since it was the middle of happy hour! Yes a happy hour past 6, woo hoo! The bartender was super friendly and told us about other happy hour drinks that weren't shown at the bar. When we got to our table, we were greeted by Sky who was also just as friendly....service was FAST too. I thought she'd be a little overwhelmed with our orders but she was accurate and efficient with getting everything to us. The staff members were prompt in sending out the food, and as busy as they were, I expected the wait to be awhile. We got a little bit of everything; wings, crab legs, and shrimp. Not too bad at all. I'll have to try the pizza next time. And it was decently priced at 22.99 with 18% gratuity automatically added.
