Our 2011 Infiniti sedan started making a loud flapping noise when we were driving on the freeway the other day. Sort of like if you stuck a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle. It was a scary sound and it really concerned us that something horrible had happened while we were driving. We brought it in this morning, Joey took one look and found a piece of rubber hanging down from the underside of the car that was obviously flapping in the breeze as we drove. I have been trusting my car to Rick and the team at Peanuts for years. This is actually my second review. The shop is now in the capable hands of Joey and he is doing an amazing job of keeping my business! I recently had an awful experience with the dealership. I tried the dealership because of thoughts that it might be a warranty issue. What a mistake. I brought my minivan in last week for a thumping noise. The dealership quoted me $2888 to replace all three motor mounts, $831 to flush the transmission, $226 for a brake flush, $113 for cabin air filter replacement, and $299 for fuel injector service. A total of over $4300. I chose to eat the dealership $279 diagnostic fee and take the car to Joey. Joey said he doubted the dealership ever even removed the parts needed to assess the motor mounts because two were in perfect shape and only one needed replacement. As for the transmission flush, the specs on my car specifically say it is a closed system and should be good for life with never a flush. My fuel injector was completely fine. My brakes were completely fine. Joey did agree my cabin air filter needed a change. Grand total for all the work, just over $300. Car is running great, thumping is gone and I trust I will get many more trouble free miles. To make matters even more amazing, Joey even helped my teenage daughter load her bicycle into the back of the car when she rode up there to pick up the car. I trust Joey and the whole Peanuts team completely and could not be happier to continue having a trustworthy small business mechanic in the area. read more

It was probably 10 months ago when I had them check out my 2014 VW cc the repair man told me he didn't thiink it was worth repairing ( I live next door to my job at the hospital and don't drive much so it had some deferred maintenance and was running very rough) I told him since the car was paid for I was interested in what it would take, he said there there were so many error codes... I said how much do you think it would take? He said it was going to be a lot. I said well how much he said at least $2000. I didn't have the money so I took the car home and garaged it saved the money over the past year and took it back ( I paid a diagnostic fee of 100 or 150. When I took it back I talked to a man who I thought was the same man and reminded him of the car and me , he seemed to remember so I brought the car back, they looked at it and told me it would cost $8000 to fix ( I drive the car a couple of times a week ) although it's still running rough, well I went to pick up the car ( low blue book is about 4000 so the guy charges me another $200 for a diagnostic, ( which he did discount 15$) when I asked about the charge he told me that it wasn't him but the previous owner who I had talked to( but he let me believe it was him when I reminded him when I made the appointment. Seems like he could have let me know that the shop had changed ownership he went through the prior paperwork to see what they had come up with, I think this could have been handled better I paid more than 300$ for an estimate. The dealership would have done it for free . I didn't want another estimate, I wanted to get the car worked on. I was referred to them by a co-worker and im so glad I was. They are old school and know their cars. Joey was my 1st contact and he was incredible over the phone and in person. We brought the car in on Thursday, he said he wouldn't be able to look at it until Friday but called me Thursday afternoon that they were already looking at it. We were hoping the fixes would be max $500....we walked away paying $328.55 (including an oil change) AND when you walk in you're greeted by a sweet old dog and a cutie weenie dog. Peanuts Auto Repair is a godsend! My wife and I, our whole family actually, have been taking our cars to Bryan at San Carlos Auto for two and a half decades now. Well.. Bryan sold his shop to Aero Auto. I was more than happy to give the new owners an opportunity to win me over. They failed, miserably. I took my 2006 Honda in for a tire rotation and an oil change. I was told by a service writer that they would include a courtesy check for free. She was very polite and friendly. Unfortunately, when I got a call back, she said that the mechanic discovered quite a few issues ($1,376 worth of issues) with my car. I almost had her fix everything, but then I got a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach. That feeling that you're getting fleeced. I asked for an email of the estimate. A photo of the drive belt suggested to be replaced was provided in the estimate and showed no damage that could be seen with the visible eye. I picked up the car without getting any of the recommended services. I decided to call Peanuts Auto Repair because of the rave reviews on ND. Joey, previously of San Carlos Auto, answered the phone! I was elated, because I really trusted San Carlos Auto and I was thrilled to hear Joey's friendly voice. I gave Joey the estimate Aero gave me. He said only the brakes needed to be replaced, and the cabin air filter. Everything else was fine, the drive belt etcetera etcetera didn't need to be replaced. These clowns charged me $1,400 for a supposedly damaged radiator; claiming that it was damaged due to me getting into accident. Turns out a week later, my check engine comes on, which it didn't prior to taking it to Peanuts. I take it in and Joey tells me that it might be failed censor or a damaged spark plug. He couldn't see it that day, so I thought nothing of it, other than what he told me. Fast forward a few weeks later; I come to find out it was the engine was completely damaged. Big rip of. They were great in the beginning, but they probably figured I needed a new car, so they decided to rip me off as a big send off for my Honda Cr v. They knew the engine was done, so they lied to me it was the radiator. Who knows, maybe they didn't even fix that. They took me for an idiot, so they acted accordingly. Be careful with these guys. They are good charmers, but will rip you off if you're not careful. read more

Can't say enough good things about Peanuts Auto Repair on Lake Murray Boulevard. Being new to La Mesa, I took my 2016 VW Jetta in for basic servicing. I had some trepidation upon seeing the garage for the first time. I had read all the great reviews on Yelp! and I had called an made an appointment, so I pulled in. I was immediately comfortable with the owner. They changed my oil; put in a new oil filter; reset my tire pressure (10 psi low) and reset the psi warning light; told me I needed to get new front tires soon and have the tires rotated. They suggested changing the interior compartment air filter, which I did. They did a full inspection of the car. Then they drove the car to see if they could detect any abnormalities. Then commenced to work on it. It took about an hour and a half, which is what I was told at the time I made the appointment. They even put my new registration sticker on the license plate...BUT not before removing all the old stickers, many were a bit cockeyed. Who does that?? I was really impressed!! The car felt like a new car. Tight, hugging the road nicely. Good torque. Responsive. While the car was under warranty, I went to Kearny Mesa Volkswagen. Now that it is off warranty, I will be giving all my business to Peanuts. They are really great! Honest. Professional. Thorough. Knowledgeable. read more

This review has been a long time coming. My wife and I moved to the San Diego area last year. Up until I meant Rick, Scott and the rest of the crew at Peanuts Auto Care; I all but given up on finding a honest mechanic in this county. I had to get my vehicle fixed to pass the smog test and three other auto shops tried to over charge me. Rick quoted the price of repairing my catalytic converter about 100 dollars less than three other shops. The next time I went to Peanuts, I had to change my battery. Yes, that sounds strange. However, my new car has a fuse box on the top of the battery and I was unsure how to properly remove it. They were nice enough to show me how to take the box off of it and they did not want to charge me anything. I still felt like I had to give them at least an half an hour for labor costs. Recently I made the terrible mistake of using a coupon to get an oil change and tire balance because a weird nose coming from one of the tires. Unfortunately, Peanuts can not balance tires. So, I took my vehicle to another mechanic who then tried to recommend almost 600 dollars in additional work. Plus, this other shop did not even balance my tires because I "needed new struts and tires". I went back to Peanuts and had them look at it. In addition to saying none of the other recommendations were necessary, they found I needed new bearings. Which fixed the noise my wife heard. Additionally, I was doing training out of state and met someone from San Diego. We started chatting and I was mentioning how much everything costs in California. I brought up I did find a great honest mechanic on Murray and before I said the name; he asked if I was talking about Peanuts Auto Care. He agreed Peanuts is the best in town. The last time I was there, Scott remembered a previous time I was there and I needed a ride to a nearby doctor for my appointment for injury. He asked how it was. I fully trust this auto shop. They are not here to rip you off. They provide a great service to the community. Plus, they have this wonderful sweet old dog that greats you at the door. My last time there, he got up and walked to my car. You can tell Nick treats this dog like a family member and it seems that is how he treats his customers. Really bad service, i had recently just bought a car and came for a check service, they refused to help me for my car being too low, i tried to leave but my battery died and they wouldn't help me jump start it. He tried telling me i have engine problems without even looking at the engine, they were all sitting together laughing and not helping, and the owner comes out again saying the car won't turn on if we jump start it. but we jumped started it from my friend and it turned on right away.
