Among all of us we had salmon, steaks, pasta, sandwiches and various appetizers. All I heard throughout the dinner were comments such as, "this is the best (fill in the dinner) I have ever had". Thanks for the great graduation celebration!! If you are in Kirksville, driving through Macon or whatever brings you by there, it's worth a stop for lunch or dinner. Prices for our dinner choices ranged between $15 for sandwiches to $50 for the steak we had. Service is great they are well staffed. Friday night I had the ribeye special floating in a flavorless pepper corn sauce topped with shoestring potatoes. For starters the bread was good tasted home made. Salad is ok. Steak was undercooked and cooked unevenly so part of it is nearly raw. No seasoning not even salted. They said that it was aged 162 days but it was still kind of tough. Not worth the money .They were super busy so I'll live with it as I will microwave it later and they can live wit my review. The stellar ratings on Yelp and elsewhere aren't an exaggeration: the pork tenderloin sandwich is memorable, portions are filling, the prices are fair and the restaurant is smoothly run. This is a mid-MO (or Central MO) must-try. Calling in carryout was easy, with a quoted wait time of only about 20 minutes during the busy Saturday evening rush. The order-taker couldn't have been more patient with first-timer questions and the order was delivered curbside with steam still gathering inside of the neatly packed containers. No time was wasted and the plating presentation, even in to-go boxes, was an appetizing touch. Both the pork tenderloin and fish & chips were lightly seasoned, breaded and evenly fried to a light amber. Either one would be a safe bet for a pleasant evening and I imagine that most diners have leftovers for the next day since salads and sides are included (even with dishes served atop shoestring potatoes). The sides followed the same elevated comfort food style, with a Lebanese rice offering, flecked with slivered nuts and herbs, proving the unexpected winner. Understated from the outside, but warm and inviting through the windows, there might be no better testament to what this restaurant is doing than their ability to deliver a first-rate experience to those not visiting the dining room (as of early July 2020, the indoor dining room IS open). Had the Ruben which I am really particular about, to say the least not impressed. What else was I not impressed with? 1. My table was verrrryyyy crooked! Not kinda, but very! 2. Had to learn about the specials from the waiter across the dining room, not mine. 3. The onion rings, come on whats all the hype? 4. My water not gettng refilled, bet if it was a beer it would've. Now you ask, is that it? Nope, the biggest reason is because they produce a product (condiments) that reccomends storage in a refrigerated area after opening and then put it on the non-refrigerated table to serve the patrons?????? This is a really nice semi formal type restaurant. Nice atmosphere and ambiance. Waiters and waitresses are all dressed very professional. Service is really good. Traveling through and decided to stop. I will reroute in the future so I can stop again! This gem is casual if you are wearing comfy travel clothes, but upscale so you know you are someplace special. I was there in time for happy hour and got a fresh salad, bread, a generous portion of bolognese with prime rib in it, a cocktail and a dessert for less than $30. I've never had a bad thing from AJ's. Ever. And can we talk about their salad for just a second? It's so simple but so good, and their house vinaigrette is so amazing that I had to bring a bottle back to Denver with me. (Is there magic in their croutons?) If it's your first time to AJ's, make sure you get the onion rings to start. Everyone has to try one of their burgers at least once (PS - they're all double burgers, the menu won't tell you that, though), but you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Plus, their cocktails and beers are reasonably priced. Their happy hour deals looked amazing! When we left, I had to get a container of their wedding cake to go. We saw their billboard on the highway and decided to stop in for lunch. Nice atmosphere, lots of staff. Nothing under $15, but we decided to stay for a meal. Our meal included salad and one side. I ordered fried fish and my husband fried chicken. Our salad came "family style" but looked like an individual serving. Our dressing came in a plastic condiment cup. We were told unlimited salad refills, so we shared what seemed like 14 baby greens, a few carrot and onion slices and a couple grape tomatoes. The house made french dressing and croutons were delicious. When we finished our 4 bites of salad, one of the staff tried to take our bowls. We asked for more salad. It was so identical to the first bowl, we felt like every leaf and topping was counted. The fish and chicken we're delicious. They were served on beds of super thin potato fries, apparently for artistic effect. They were not tasty (and we really like fries). I had requested a side of Cajun Cole slaw. It was limp and bland. My husband had requested fries and was served the same thing fries that were under his chicken. The waitress should have pointed this out when we ordered and suggested a different side dish to pair with this meal. As we were finishing our meal the host walked by and asked if we liked our meal, but did not stop to get our answer. He did not break his stride. We were left with a bad taste in our mouths. Overpriced food in a nice atmosphere. We will not return, but I wish that fish was served at another restaurant and that they would share their french salad dressing recipe. read more

Awesome sauce! We stopped here on our way from St. Louis to Omaha. What a great place. The dinner salad with homemade blue cheese dressing was probably the best I've ever eaten anywhere. The burgers were delicious, the fries and onion rings are quite good, and the wedding cake for dessert was over-the-top delicious. Amazing restaurant in central Missouri. I drive my tour groups from St. Louis there for lunch before performances at the Maples Repertory Theatre. The food is outstanding. The addition of the French table side service makes it even more impressive. Their prime rib is on the mark every time and never have they run out of the proper temperature for anyone with our group. The prawns, crab rangoon, onion rings and homemade salad dressings are mouthwatering. And they always seem to finish off with some fantastic dessert that includes ice cream. Their wait staff and bussers have been trained and they understand customer service. Often times restaurants are lacking in this aspect. PLUS, they GET GROUPS! It is obvious why all the local groups have their monthly and weekly meetings there. They can get the food out hot and in a timely manner. If you are even within an hour's drive of Macon, get by here to eat! read more

What can I say, we find a restaurant that we LOVE and it's a two hour drive each way. The sign on the pole out front says A.J.'s but the building is labeled "The Pear Tree". The food is as good as you will find in much larger cities, the staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable for the quantity and quality you get. I could literally just eat their fresh baked bread and their salads. They make their own salad dressing and its better than anything you can find in a bottle. I had a burger they call "The Ringer", it's as good as I've ever had anywhere. We will be making the two hour drive to dine there again. read more

I enjoyed AJ's quite a bit. The burger was good, fries and salad were phenomenal, and the crab Rangoon appetizer tasted great! The establishment was clean, to include the bathrooms, and the ambiance was pretty nice as well. Some of the other reviews complained that AJs was overpriced, which surprised me because with each entree you receive bottomless salad with an assortment of salad dressing (to include a home made house), and bread. I'm visiting family from Las Vegas and one of my peeves about staying in NE Missouri is that there is absolutely NO place to eat within 45 min drive that taste great, and is CLEAN. We came here today for the first time after it was recommended to us by our realtor. We had go try the onion ring appetizer because we were told they're amazing.. and they certainly were! I loooove onion rings and these have got to be the best I've ever had. The half time order was the perfect size. I however extremely enjoyed my delicious hand crafted strawberry margarita and would have had more than one if it wasn't lunch time. I wanted to try everything, so it's a good thing we're moving to the area! You get dinner salads brought out to your table to share, and really feel like you're being doted on when this happens. We started off with an order of the Famous Onion Rings Awesome!!! For my dinner I had to try their signature sandwich; the Batter Dipped Tenderloin. It was delicious! My wife had the Chicken Picatta and said it was also delicious. We finished with a couple of their dessert shots. My wife had the Raspberry Royale and I had the Double Chocolate Gooey. I really want to like this place: it has charm and character. But the bulk of the menu is fried, and the prices are ridiculous for the location/setting/portion. New York City prices for steak in Missouri? No, I can't do it. The best thing on the menu: the caesar chicken salad! And the onion rings are to die for. So, after several meals at AJ's, I'm still a fan, but with a few caveats. Since The Pear Tree closed down, some menu items have been removed in favor of adding Pear Tree menu items. I miss the nachos, but the crab rangoons are pretty good - light, crispy batter and creamy center. I really wish they had kept the biggie bread! I think the quality of the meat for the burgers isn't quite as good as it used to be, but it's hard to go wrong with a batter dipped chicken salad. All three dressings are great and compliment the delicious chicken wonderfully. BBQ sauce is a little too sweet, but smoke sauce is quite good. Happy hour prices are awesome and make the drive well worth it. Overall, a very good, solid restaurant for NE Missouri. read more

We live in Kansas City and were driving back from a weekend trip in Illinois visiting family who told us we had to stop here and try the onion rings. No joke these were THE best onion rings we have ever had. The batter was something else, it sort of melted in your mouth and the flavor was just right. I also ended up getting a pork tenderloin sandwich which was equally amazing as it was fried in this delicious batter. Our server was super nice and service was great as well. This place will definitely become a staple every time we drive to Illinois and honestly I can't wait to return! This place is no hole in the wall. It is a well run and staffed restaurant near Hiway 36 in Macon. The tables are plentiful but not on top of each other. It is a perfect mix of elegant fine dining and a cozy fun eclectic fun dining. They age their beef well and proudly boast on the chalk board. The salad...crisp and fresh! I enjoyed the patty melt and my husband enjoyed the cheeseburger. Ahhhhmazing!! If you don't have room for dessert, order it to go. The wedding cake is what dreams are made of! Wow!!! Was not expecting it to be this good. We were on our way through Macon and wanting something other than fast food. My husband had the chicken tenders and fries. Believe it or not, chicken tenders can definitely be messed up. These were delicious. All quality white meat and the fries were very good. I had the fried fish and it was honestly some of the best I've ever had. The fish was light and flakey with a great taste. No funky, fishy flavor. My husband hates fish and actually asked for more after he tried some of it! Both our meals came with salads. The Caesar was delicious and perfectly dressed. Our table also got piping hot bread with butter that was also wonderful. All in all not a single complaint or thing I would've changed.
