I am writing to share my wonderful experience with Connie at Pearl Body Works. She is truly amazing and was incredibly helpful during my recent visit with my family. Connie is exceptionally knowledgeable about the body and the skeletal system. I had been having some issues with my shoulder, and without me even mentioning it, she identified the problem within minutes. As a private chef and yoga teacher in San Francisco, I use my body constantly for work and prefer very strong massages; Connie is incredibly strong and provided exactly what I needed. After our hour-long session, I felt completely put back together and ready to enjoy the rest of my trip. Her studio is modest and quiet, located in the back of the building, providing a peaceful environment where her healing hands can work their magic. I don't know why there is all the hate for Pearl Body Works. Sure it's not the best massage I ever got but it's not a 1 star. I want to start by saying that whoever said that people walking by could see you is very wrong. The walls are like 7 feet tall. No one would be able to sneak a peek unless they were a pro basketball player -maybe! My favorite thing was that my masseuse obviously knew what she was doing. I have lower mid-back pain constantly which is why I seek out massages. My masseuse at Pearl didn't ask me about any particular spots that hurts so I doubted she would know where my back pain was, but she noticed the HUGE knots that constantly exist in my back muscles and worked on them a lot and released a lot of tension. Other great things were that it was very quiet and peaceful and that I was seen immediately. I also really liked them starting with the massage with a blanket over me. It's the middle of winter and a good way to start a massage on cold muscles. I also liked that they use oil instead of lotion. It keeps your body lubricated during the massage better. I didn't love that they used a rough paper towel to remove a lot of the oil but I did like that they used a warm washcloth to get the rest of the oil off. Worst massage I have ever received. I felt WORSE walking out of pearl body works. They literally straddle you on top of the massage table- which by the way is uncomfortable ply wood- awwwwwkward. They rub you on top of a towel? (towel, yes, not a massage sheet). The fact is- i could deal with the awkward straddling and hard massage table and towel IF the massage was actually good. But again, it literally made my body feel worse. DONT BE FOOLED BY THEIR GROUPON PRICE! read more

So is THIS what it feels like to live without hurting or being sore? I legit feel so much better, and I've been sore for weeks! My neck, shoulders & lower back are now ache-free. I'm so impressed. Connie is amazing. $30 for 30 mins. Walked in w/o an appnt and only had to wait 5 mins bc she was finishing up w/ a customer, but she's super busy so I'll prob call ahead next time. I bought a ground for pearl body works. After reading the first review, i expected the worst. Admittedly, it is in a very odd location, under the bridge in a weird little mall. It's also a very awkward set up. It's very small, and there is a massage chair in the tiny waiting room, where they give massages. The massage room is separated by pretty low divider and very tall people could probably see over it. However, the massage was actually pretty good. The woman wasn't afriad to actually apply some pressure, which I find to be a problem most of the time. If you are looking for ambiance, this is not the place for you. But if you want a pretty good massage, I wouldn't count this place out. read more

I see some bad reviews and probably now why. Overall, I have had a GREAT experience here. There (was) a masseuse there that was just awful. I first started going to Pearl last February when I got a Groupon, 3 massages for $99. I also found it very difficult to get through to them and even get a call back. Seems this all had to do with this other "owner". My first experience was excellent, my masseuse was Connie, when I called for another appointment I specifically asked for Connie, yet when I got there , I has another masseuse (she has since left and sold out to Connie), my experience was polar opposite, one of the worst massages ever. Basically put a heavy towel over my back and pressed and pressed and pressed, that was it, seriously I still have one left, I called again, I DEMANDED that Connie do my massage this time. When I arrived, I did indeed get Connie. The massage was again terrific, one of the very best I have had, and I have had well over 100. I have now been going for 11 months, averaging 3-4 times a month. Connie does a really fantastic job, an each time I go, it truly gets better and better as she knows my body and what ails me. Please give them a try, you will be more than happy you did. It is not a Spa like Jones in the city, but you are not paying $150 and a $30 tip either. I get as good if not better massage than I received at some of Manhattan's priciest and fanciest spas, for 1/3 the price. In reading thru the reviews, it looks like MAYBE they give good massages to the full pays, and crappy ones to the Grouponers? I dunno. Not a scientific analysis, just a hunch. I do not recommend this place! I wouldn't know whether their massages are any good since there no one showed up for my scheduled massage. A woman had called me earlier in the week to schedule an appointment. All good, or so I thought. On the morning of the massage, I arrived 5 minutes early looking forward to an hour of relaxation a friend had given me via a Groupon & I waited outside the locked door. I called the phone number twice & left my cell number. I knocked. I texted. After half an hour, I went back home, thoroughly annoyed & feeling the exact opposite of how I expected to feel. This is no fancy spa, but I got a full 60-min massage for $49! Need I say more? I just walked in and I told Maddie that my neck/shoulders are really tight. He spend majority of his time working on the knots. I really wanna like this place but I just couldn't. The massage I got was just ok. It seems since they have the groupon deal they have been really busy. So the length of the massage wasn't an hour long. The girls works here don't really care if you are coming back. And the massage table smells very unpleasant. Over all, it was a bad experience. Idk what happen to my first post, but here it is. Yes i have been to big fancy expensive spas and paid outrageous amount of MULAH. i must say the place was smaller than my living room, and i wasn't expecting that. I even called my best friend to giggle while i waited my turn. Honestly i went there for the deal and because i was in PAIN. I had no problem going behind the bifold door and laying on the table, my main focus was HELP!. Nancy was my massage therapist! she was great! LOL she put some vaseline on her hands and went to work on my body for even more than an hour! when i left there i was OUT OF PAIN. she even gave me tips of exercises to do at home. DISAPPOINTMENT!! Returned my purchase to Groupon. I have purchased the 3 one-hour message package via Groupon a few weeks ago, this is my third time purchasing massage from Groupon. The previous two were Graceful Services at midtown east and Greenhouse Holistic at Williamsburg, both were fantastic and I would go back in a heart beat so i figure this can't be too bad specially it's so close to home I can walk there. OH WAS I WRONG! I did check Yelp prior to the purchase but given the one 4 star review I took a chance, I even bought one as a gift for my husband so we can go together. We went this past Monday night and as soon as I saw the store I knew I made a big mistake. The store is tucked in the corner of a small mall like space in Dumbo with many little shops ranging from 50 to 100 square feet booth like space. This so called "spa" is at a corner spot with green curtains duck taped to the window, as soon as you walk in there is a huge black leather sofa that took almost a quarter of the entire store space, then there are two folding screens separating the two massage tables from the front of the store, the screens are barely 6 feet tall so anyone taller than that passing the store can see the massage tables. There is no partition or privacy screens between the two massaging tables, good thing I went with my husband so it wasn't that weird but can't imagine otherwise, they made us lay down one face up first and the other face down and towards opposite directions so I guess if there were two strangers in the room it won't be so awkward to see each other. As for the service, when we got there there were no customers but seem like the store owner's entire family is there hanging out on the sofa, it was very awkward for us to change on the other side of the folding screens with that many people on the other side, not very spa like at all. My massage therapist looks very young and didn't ask me what type of massage I would like so I told her I wanted deep tissue massage, then she said she can't do deep tissue massage on my entire body so I said fine then focus on my neck and lower back. Then she spent about half an hour on my legs just rubbing up and down, then about another 10 minutes on arms and head, lastly she worked on my shoulder and lower back for no more than 10 minutes, and it was the most painful deep tissue massage I've ever gotten as she was using her knuckles violently rubbing on my shoulder blades. There was a lack of pattern of her massage technique, she worked on my legs and feet then moved to my head and shoulder, and I don't think she washed her hands so that was kind of disgusting even it's my own feet, she also forgot to cleanup the massaging oil before she left the room. As for my husband's massage therapist, he said he doesn't know what she was doing, she is all over the place and I kept on hearing her slapping on his back and legs rather than massaging. The best part is that she walked out of the room after 40 minutes not even the full hour. I was furious after this massage and wrote a long complaint letter to Groupon, I did get my refund from Groupon. I hope your experience will be better than my or if you trust me just go ask for Groupon for a refund now, take your money go to Graceful Services you will not regret it. read more

I went to this place because I had gotten a groupon for a massage. This first problem I ran into was the first number they had listed on their website, was out of service...that should of been a sign or warning of what I was getting into. I tried the other number that said to send a text message. So I sent a text and set up an appointment. I had an appt for 12:30pm. The day I was suppose to get my massage, I got a text at 11:11 saying there is a twenty minute delay for my 12:00 appt. My appt was never at 12 to begin with. Second sign. When I arrived it was in a small shopping mall. The door was locked and no one was in sight. I came to find out that they were in the middle of another massage, so they couldn't answer the door. Luckily its indoors, so I didn't have to wait out in the cold in January. They should place a sign on the door stating that they are currently doing a massage, and they will be with you momentarily and that you should have a seat on the bench and wait, so you aren't there pounding on the glass door, disturbing the person that's getting their massage. There was also another woman that was there waiting to get in as well. She told me she had a 12 appt but got a text about there being a twenty minute delay. When they finished the massage, they came out and opened the door for us. The woman led me to the back room, no doors, just curtains. The table didn't have changeable linens, it had one of those hard paper liners you would get if you were seeing the gyno doctor. When I put my face down on the rest it smelled like b.o.(very gross...I don't know how I made it through the whole "massage") She didn't ask what kind of massage I wanted she just started to rub me with the towel on. This continued for about 15 minutes, just "smoothing" me out getting me ready for the massage. The massage was horrible. I usually get massages once a month, and this is way on the bottom of my list of places I like, if not the worst. The whole "massage" was not a full hour. She just spent most of her time, rubbing my body on top of the towel,like she was smoothing out wrinkles on a bed, not using oil and giving me a massage. The real massage was only about 20 min if that. The walls are paper thin there too, and the two women were talking a little back and forth, not relaxing at all. You could also hear the toilet flush all the time, since there is a community bathroom for the shops right next to the place. Not something you want to hear when trying to relax. I would not recommend this place what so ever, and wish I could get my money back. I don't even know why I even tipped her. I'm so happy I didn't buy the three pack! read more

I received a voucher for a massage from Pearl Body Works for my birthday. First, while I understand that rents are high and everyone wants to have their own business, I wasn't too upset with the location. However, when I arrived, the lady did not have my appointment down, which by the way-she wrote on a calendar, not a computer system. Secondly, the room was sectioned off by a curtain. It wasn't that bad. The massage table was extremely uncomfortable. It felt like I was laying on wood. The lady did not ask me what type of massage I wanted so I told her I wanted the hot stone massage. Thirdly, there were no sheets used to cover me, she used a towel. She heated the water for the stones in the microwave. At first it was too hot. So she began her massage which felt much like a Swedish. She then began to use the stones which were lukewarm by then. She only used them for ten minutes. She then began to knead as if giving me a deep tissue massage. She did not ask me about any problem areas, I had to tell her, even when I did, she did not concentrate in them. I'm not sure if others who posted raving reviews have gotten massages at real spas, but if hey did, they would not be posting 5 star reviews. I could not relax, I was cold. The way she placed the towel while working on my legs was wrong. Too much skin was exposed. Just had a horrible experience trying to collect on my soon-to-expire Amazon Local voucher for three massages. Called this morning to book a massage. Showed up on time in the pouring rain, after going to some effort to find a legal two hour parking spot. There was a sign on the locked door of their "salon" telling me not to knock since they were working with another client and would be out shortly. Waited 15 mins. then knocked repeatedly until someone emerged. She had no record of my appointment, blamed it on someone else and told me to come back in an hour. When I returned an hour later I was told she was booked for the afternoon. No one seems to be in charge or care about customer service. The "salon" is really a stall in a converted warehouse, dingy and dark, not inviting! When I called Amazon Local customer service to complain they immediately refunded my money. Kudos to Amazon Local for their rapid refund policy, but I wouldn't go to Pearl Body Works at this point if they paid me. read more

This is a great place for a Chinese Style massage. Nancy is great because she is able to find all tired spots and work out the knots. The space is a little small, but if you just want a massage this place is reasonable ($50 an hour). read more
