My friends and visited Relax Foot Spa last Saturday afternoon. It's my first time here. From the outside, it looks quite clean. We did a 60min foot massage for $35. It's a good deal and I haven't seen this low price for 60 min foot massage for awhile. The technician is pretty strong. I've been going to their other location across the street on Centre for the past 3 years and loved the service. They closed so I went in today for a full body half back and half foot massage. I'm not sure if the woman who was assigned to me was trained on how to give a massage. She went extremely fast and it felt like she was just poking me the entire time instead of properly fixing my knots and massaging the muscles. It was not relaxing at all. And trust me I enjoy typically more painful massages so it wasn't that. I ended up ending the massage early and found them rude with the entire experience. Will not be coming again. Horrible experience. The foot massage took place in the front where people were walking in and out, waiting for their appointment, and talking loudly. One of the staff members giving a massage was on the phone, speakers on, screaming into the phone. The guy that did my massage rubbed SO hard and used a sharp stone 90% of the time, digging in to my feet. It was less of a massage and more of a just striaght up painful experience. My having a dress on was a non issue to them, my masseuse give me a large clean towel to cover up. Sad to say this place has gone downhill over the years. I went for a sixty minute session the other day. My reflexology this past time could be described as a weak rub, at best. And while I appreciate a brief back massage while your feet are soaking, I wasn't expecting that to last for a half hour. I wanted the majority of my time to be spent on my feet and legs here this time. Not 50% of my session. I had some congestion and was not interested in being face down for a half hour- that is not comfortable when you are congested. What really bothered me: I am always a generous tipper and even though the massage was sub-par, I tipped 20%. They pointed to a written sign that requested much more than that. I don't think the industry standard is more than 20% unless something changed recently. (FYI- I do give large tips when warranted). It's not appropriate to ask your customers to tip 50% for a less-than-average job. read more

The place is absolutely no-frills, and don't expect anything fancy. None of the waterfall sounds or bubbling brook fountains, but if you're here just for reflexology massage then it does the trick. An older Chinese gentleman gauged my tolerance for deep tissue massage and he really worked all of my trouble areas. He can fix all those long-term knots, and I would definitely come back. read more

We went to Relax for a foot massage family outing! Everyone seemed to have a slightly different opinion. My massage with Wendy was very good. The first 20 minute back and shoulder massage was excellent! The massage chairs turn into tables ate very comfortable. The foot massage was good. 12 year old said his massage technician was just too strong, even after he repeatedly said to go lighter. 13 year old said his massage was ok but also a bit strong. Husband said it may have been his best massage ever! My complaint though, is that I could not relax because it was so noisy. I have had many foot massages in Chinatown and other places so I know the drill. They are not private and you are often sitting next to strangers. At Relax, 12 year old and I were sitting in the main corridor with people constantly walking by. Other staff members would talk loudly to the people massaging you and you could hear what was going on at the front desk clear as day. I picked Relax Foot because of the enthusiastic reviews and the $30 price for a 1-hour foot and back massage (say what?!). The fact that they called me five minutes after I messaged them for an appointment time only confirmed the choice. Here's a breakdown of everything that happened: 6:30 pm: I walk in, nervously eyeing the establishment, jittery from the taro bubble tea I had downed a few minutes before. This would turn out to be a rookie mistake. Anyway, Relax has a series of chairs set up in one room and three more beds further inside. I got a bed. Lucky ole me. Some curtains cordon you off from the other customers so if you're not into the meaty, thwacking sounds of your neighbor getting his back rubbed, uh, find a massage place not in this city? 6:35: Soaking my poor, abused toes in some heavenly, herbal water. A lady is working on my back and keeps tsk-ing at the knots riddling my shoulders. She irons some out with her thumbs and elbows. Heavenly. ~6:50: I maneuver myself face-down onto the bed. Uh-oh. I hear the bubble tea sloshing around inside my belly. She starts rubbing down my spinal column. I feel gloriously rubbed down, like a cat shaking out its fur. I feel loosened up and generous towards all on earth, especially the people I'm going to have to fight in order to wedge myself onto the express train. ~7:35 pm: I stagger into the pellucid, balmy air that is a spring night in Chinatown, my eyes bloodshot, as though I've been sobbing whereas in actuality, I've been face-down and dozing off. Because my limbs are so relaxed, I find myself doing a drunken weave down Lafayette. Strangers keep staring at me nervously; tourist families give me a wide berth on the sidewalk. Try not to wear your contacts to a massage. Each and every time, I come out looking like a drowned rat in the eyes. DAMAGE: $30. I left a 33.3% tip. The back/shoulder massage was mediocre at best... I had to ask my masseuse to go harder since he was barely putting any effort into it. The foot massage was alright. The major detail that killed the entire experience for me was the fact that they don't use towels. Instead, you're massaged and wiped down with paper towels that feel scratchy against your skin. Not a good way to end a massage... if they just invested in some towels that would add a nice touch. This is my second time coming here (193 Centre St.), the first time I had James, a middle-aged man. I thought he was absolutely wonderful, he applied the right amount of pressure and although I didn't need to give him directives throughout referencing pressure or trouble spots, you could tell he is experienced because he listened to my body & how it responded to the pressure. If I flinched, he eased up, if I gave a sigh of relief he continued the pressure and motions. This time around I had Daniel, tall younger guy. I got in a little later than my appointment, but he still gave me the full hour! He applied much needed pressure and spoke to me a little bit through the beginning to get to know my likes & dislikes. He used his elbow for areas that had a harder knot he could not get out. I must be a masochist because at the time it felt good, now im a little sore. He was very thorough by focusing on my problem areas, every once of my body down to my toes & after massaging, he stretched out my joints and limbs. After the oils, which he warmed up with his hands he used a warm towel to rid my body of it so it would penetrate my skin but not get on my clothes. He was very comfortable in making me sit up to get to my shoulders more & getting onto the table to release my back-which felt awesome! They are very professional! They call you to confirm your appointment a couple minutes before if they don't see you. The employees greet you with a smile, you get water after your massage,and this location has a salon as well. She first asked if I wanted just a foot massage, or a combination of back, shoulders and arms. I asked for the combination and I FELL ASLEEP as soon as she started working on my feet! She also asked if I wanted a throw because I had my arms crossed and appeared to look cold, but the temperature in the room was just perfect. It was really nice of her to ask, though. FYI, you can change into the pants they offer, but make sure to wear comfortable pants/leggings so you can lift them up without having too much trouble. I went with a friend who didn't have a good experience, so had to take a star off. Her masseuse kept poking at her wound, wasn't thorough, and the manager actually followed us out when she didn't tip! I come here every week as I get terrible knots very frequently. Jeff is my go-to guy. If you are looking for strong pressure massages to fix your knots. He's your guy. He works miracles! To be completely fair, the place isn't exactly set in the most relaxing ambiance or like your typical spa spot...but I would say their techniques are far better than most I've had (I am from HK and had a fair amount of massages my life) and it's very affordable comparing to most places in New York. Although I've been here many times over the yeRs, my last two experiences have been quite mediocre. Most recently I scheduled a 90 minute foot reflexology with a friend. My friends back massage was well underway for 5 minutes or so when mine finally started. Throughout the first hour, my massage therapist answered the business phone at least 6 times, randomly left multiples times (all while I'm hearing my friends massage therapist ask her if it was ok, too strong etc. Out of 90 minutes, I'd estimate I received 70 minutes of service. No bueno. The timer went off and both of our massages ended at the same time - even though mine did not start until 5 minutes after my friend. The kicker ? My friend left a 20% tip and was told that $9 was not a good tip and she should leave $15. Trust that I did not leave a generous tip. read more

I have been here twice, first time 30 minute foot reflexogoly which was great didn't want it to end. However, I was 15 mins in when realized so just went with it. Let me upgrade you. And Relax Foot Spa went all out! I used to hate how during the neck and shoulders portion, they'd reverse the chair and have you lean on the headrest. That always put my neck in an uncomfortable position and made me cramp up instead of relaxing. Now that is no more!! Relax now uses these electric reclining chairs that you can lay on both your stomach and back! With the head hole, no more uncomfortable makeshift headrest and the first portion of the massage feels like a traditional table massage. It definitely helped me relax more as he was massaging my shoulders and back. The rest of the massage has stayed the same, and it's still good. The only key difference I remember is that your feet don't soak for as long anymore, but honestly, I don't mind. Kudos for enhancing the experience! read more

Location is a 3 min walk from the train station, street level, clean and bright reception area, receptionist is a sweetheart, my masseur attended to me right away. She would pause and to check her nails. And, worst of all she only worked 50 minutes on me when that timer went off. It was 6 15 when she started ( as in telling me to sit with my back facing her so she can work on my shoulders for 15 minutes.); it was 7 05 when she told me she was done. You could tell she sucked when you know that she didn't do the same routine on each leg. First left was rushed, then she slowed down on the right after peeking on the timer then suddenly she speeded up and crazily rubbed my right rub and wrapped it up. What the.... I wonder why sometimes... I feel that at some joints when you are nice and super polite they take you as a moron who can be taken advantage of because they know you won't speak up for yourself because you are... nice. Great place to get a massage. They really work you hard, depending on who you get. My friend gave me 2 vouchers to this place. The first time I came, I had a younger guy and the massage was just bleh. The second time, I had an elderly guy and he KNOWS how to massage you. Now, I usually book a 1.5hr appointment once a month and he gets all the knots out of me. I'm a pharmacist and I stand and stare at the computer 12 hours a day, several times a week. It does not sound like strenuous work but it does take a toll on my body. Anyway, xiao sifu is really good. He works on my whole body including my neck, back, feet, wrist etc. He knows all the pressure points and how to loosen your muscles. I speak mostly Cantonese with him and he likes to recommend things for me to do to help myself get rid of tightness and knots;pressure points to massage, exercise more (hes a strong advocate of swimming). Occasionally he doesn't massage as hard on you (especially when I fall asleep on the chair) but I still.come out refreshed. I'm usually a sloucher, but I always stand straighter and I unconciously take deeper breaths after I get a massage from him. Deborah H and two other gf's gave this to me as part of my bday gift. Absolutely wonderful for a no frills place! Xiao provided just the right amount of pressure and I walked out feeling extremely relaxed. However, be sure to speak up if you do not think they are applying enough pressure (highly doubtful) or they are putting too much pressure. My job requires that I stand on my two feet for 8 hour shifts (and that's 8 hours if I'm lucky!). At the end of the day walking to and from the train is painful no matter what shoes I wear, compression stockings, insoles etc. So I'm a regular at Relax Foot Spa. I don't have a go to person here. I usually don't make appointments either. But whenever I do drop by, they're able to fit me in right away. Sometimes, it's super painful, sometimes it's mad awkward when they stare at me (so I pretend to sleep) but at the end of the hour long session my legs and feet feel brand new. Most of the time I forgo the ghetto "back" massage which is basically done while your feet are soaking and you lean over a recliner. Stick with the foot massages. I appreciate that they also have sweat pants they offer to women in case your jeans are too tight or you're wearing a skirt. I bought a package for 13 session for $300 (I think that's how much I paid) which is a pretty good deal after you break it down. read more

I have been going to relax for the past two years and for a solid six months, I was going on a weekly basis. I get severe migraines that stem from my neck to my lower back, and a massage from here is the only natural trick I've found! The reflexology here is pretty solid. For $30, you get an hour worth of hard pressure centered around your pressure points - 25 minutes on your back/neck/head, 35 mins on your feet/legs. It is the absolute cheapest that I have found in Chinatown and all of NYC for that matter. I would recommend reflexology to someone who likes a hard massage. If you prefer softer massages, you might feel less of an impact or you might not enjoy the experience as much altogether. My go-to: Liu. He is tough, a bit sloppy, but always stays focused on my pain areas without me having to point them out. If you ask, he might also spend extra time on your back and less on your feet! My next go-to: Paul. He is also tough, but also uses lighter pressure until you mention to be harder. He provides the best real reflexology service and understands the muscles incredibly well. I feel euphoria after he massages me... Every. Single. Time. This is by no means an upscale place. You are paying very little for a really great massage, but the atmosphere is plain jane.
