Great spot when you're craving fried chicken or a nice yet casual meal. Came here with some friends for a weekend dinner. We split two three piece chickens and order of ghost pepper wings between three people + a beer each. We were left completely stuffed and still had leftover wings-- if I was to go again, I would probably skip one of the items. For the fried chicken we got the salted egg and chili sauces-- both were really good although I slightly preferred the chili as it felt like it had more depth in flavor. The ghost pepper wings had a spice that built-- if you like hot foods, definitely try it! Sides-wise, we got the potato salad, cucumbers, turnips, and cornbread. The sides were honestly all bomb-- you can't go wrong with any of them, so choose based on what dishes you like best. Staff at the restaurant are super friendly. I'm obsessed with this chili fried chicken. I was blown away when I had Pecking House as a pop-up in SF. I knew I had to try their flagship location in NYC and it does not disappoint. When two fine dining chefs first opened Pecking House as a pop up in NYC, it had a 10,000 person wait list. Now their permanent spot is spinning up the city's best fried chicken. Pecking House was one of those businesses that opened up during lockdown that seemed to thrive off of word of mouth and social media hype building and continues building its success. My hot yoga studio is located a few blocks down and so I'm always in the area at the right time to pick up food. I showed up about two minutes before opening and grabbed a salted egg chicken and two sides to go. If you're consuming this on your own, I recommend sizing down from a three piece. Surprisingly both sides (I say surprisingly because I wasn't expecting it from the rice) had that wok hei taste that I can never recreate in a home kitchen. I can't help but draw similar motifs from Manhattan's Double Chicken Please. Both Eric Huang of PH and Mark Chou of DCP flaunt a pedigree from EMP--making me wonder if they were colleagues in the same years. Both establishments have a simple line drawing of a chicken and grew their name from shatteringly crisp fried chicken paired with salted egg yolk flavors. Though vastly different in product, both are *chef's kiss* immaculately prepared and served screaming hot but I digress. I ordered the chili flavor and while it was not for me because I found the chili rather boring, it would not stop me from going back and getting their naked, extra hot, or salted egg flavors. The fried chicken came with one side- I picked the cheddar cornbread. Excellent texture but somewhat weak in flavor. They serve it with honey, which definitely helps. Pecking House by Eric Huang & Maya Ferrante is the Brooklyn pop-up that brought me to this rotating kitchen in San Francisco. They had me at fried chicken, but Szechuan-chili blend and limited time are what made me hit preorder. Eric Huang wasn't the only one getting curious about fried chicken during the pandemic. Here in San Francisco, I also took my hand at making the pan-cultural sensation. Like most times I cook, I highly underestimate the time and prep that delicious simple dishes take. Pecking House is definitely among the top 3 best fried chicken I've had in the world. While saying that is subjective, their fried chicken exceeded the three of my personal fried chicken criteria: crunch, flavor, and juciness. The flavor comes from its' brine or marination period, of which Pecking House is a master of flavor. Crunch, comes from it's breading and dredging mixture, another thing PH nailed. And lastly juiciness, something obtained by fry time, oil/oil temp, and freshness. Unsure if the cooks from Brooklyn came for out for the pop up, but everything was on point! The sandwich was fantastic - good bread, tender mushroom, spicy. The chicken was the star of the show, but I would recommend only for those who enjoy spicy. The chili oil flavor really comes through from glazed skin to the meat. The roasted cucumber salad wasnt my favorite. It's a cold cucumber salad made with unevenly roasted cucumbers. Memorably good food. Very much enjoyed my experience here last week. Prices are on the high side but I think it's worth it. Came here on a rainy Friday afternoon and there was plenty of seating. Got a 2 piece and 1 side, and the employee allowed me to get 1 of each flavor (said she would make an exception which I very much appreciated). Also got the butter bean salad. The salty egg yolk one was friggin awesome. Unique flavor that excited my taste buds in all the good ways. Chicken itself was extra moist and it was a good portion. Following Chef Eric Huang's story, I was SO excited to try Pecking House. But the moment I walked in, everything started going bad. It didn't feel like the space had IDENTITY. There was a beautiful lit up sign with Chinese characters but then your eyes move over and its this graffiti wall only to have within a few feet, a Chinese takeout menu lightbox with non appetizing pictures of the food. Are we a take out restaurant? Are we a grungy eat with your hands restaurant? Are we a casual nice dining spot? I'm not sure. We made a reservation but the staff completely forgot. So we were pulled together tables and chairs last minute. The restaurant was so unorganized that it was uncomfortable sitting there. People standing around, delivery people walking back and forth to grab their orders, the people sitting at the bar where if we leaned back, our heads would bump their booty. Much like their "identity", there was so much going on with NO organization or control. On to the menu. I wish we could have tried everything but half the menu was SOLD OUT. It was 5:30pm on a Sunday. How is that possible? You didn't JUST open, you've been open for 2 years. We all agreed the chicken was a little dry. The sauces for the chicken wings was weird... the only sauce that was OK was the salted egg yolk. The cornbread was not corn bread. The dirty fried rice was plain. Saw a recent post from the owner about tipping and also coincidentally that the pop up was in SF again through the end of the month. With all the hype, we had to go check it out. The best/easiest way is to use the Tock reservation system to submit a prepaid order online -- then you can walk up to the window and they'll assemble the order and you'll be on your way in less than 5 minutes. As others have mentioned, I too am not a huge fan of white meat. I understand they can't give customer's a preference because they need to use the entire bird, but leaving the experience up to chance isn't great. You could end up with a ton of white meat. It would be nice if pre-orders could get a preference, subject to availability. We tasted some of the chicken right away and also ate some of it later. tl;dr is you'll want to enjoy the chicken right away. If you need to travel any distance with it, the quality deteriorates pretty rapidly. The chili fried chicken ($19 for 3 pieces) was juicy and loaded with spice -- it's a flavor explosion in your mouth. Lots of complex chili flavor, Sichuan peppercorn, and a hint of sweetness to balance out the heat. In many ways, it reminded us of 辣子鸡, a famous Sichuan chili chicken dish, but in fried chicken form. Although the dark meat was noticeably juicier, I also would not have characterized the white meat as dry -- it too, was decently juicy when eaten straight away. We normally love salted egg, but it was doing it for us as a coating for fried chicken. I would definitely recommend sticking with the chili fried chicken. The peanut butter pudding ($8) was delicious. So yes, we enjoyed the chili chicken, but didn't think it was worth $19 for 3 pieces. I can order the Sichuan dish for $15-16 and get a lot more chicken, so ultimately, it's not a great value (IMHO), but we're happy to have had the chance to try it. Everything is served out of a window in paper bags so there's no traditional front-of-house service component, but of course, we're still asked to (and somewhat guilted into) providing a tip. I agree with the owner's viewpoint that tips should be shared between front and back of house but asking for tips at all for this setup is a bit ridiculous. Instead, he should factor in the avg tip amount, raise the prices by that much, and note that tips are not allowed and that the prices listed provide for livable wages for all staff. During the last visit to NY had to make sure I hit Peking house during my extended stay, so strategically showed up on a weeknight and the place was completely empty besides 1 2 topper table. Chili Chicken- This was not it. Looks amazing, tastes bland. Also with the spiciest version even topped w the chilis this chicken was weirdly bland and not spicy. We're talking like maybe hatch chili spice, but there was no heat to this. There was a nice battering of the spice mix on the chicken but it was weirdly missing any amount of savory notes. The chicken itself was nice and juicy, but man disappointment bomb when it just turned out to be a good piece of chicken with a bland exterior, which reminds you that looks arent everything, and that goes for more things in life. Yukon Gold Potato Salad - This was ok. Standard potato salad. Dirty Fried Rice - This might have had the most flavor out of everything. Overall the most disappointing meal of the trip. Im gonna go on a limb and say they might have dialed down any sort of heat from the chili chicken for the people that live in the area. Amazing!!!! Literally, I wish I good rate this place 6 stars. The food and service were amazing and I truly believe the restaurant pop up concept is pretty cool because .... I ordered the two piece chicken with mashed potatoes, butterbean salad, green ranch dressing with an IPA. Everything was so good! The fried chicken looks crispy but it's actually tender, I have no idea what they season the chicken with it has a simple, unique but great taste, they definitely have some sort or secret seasoning lol. The mashed potatoes were served with a savory duck gravy that was bomb; the butter bean salad was seasoned with mushrooms and sesame oil. Came here on a Tuesday evening and found a spot for 3 immediately. Order at the front, take a number, find a seat, then they'll bring your food out to you. The food came out relatively quick. Pecking Duck Bahn Mi - Very underwhelming. People rave about the chicken here; I probably should have just ordered a chicken sandwich, but I figured a dish with duck would be pretty good considering the name. 90% of this sandwich seemed to be bread. Inside, the duck had the texture of a paste, somewhat like tuna salad. There were crispy pieces throughout the sandwich, which were nice -- would say close to airy duck rinds. This would have been much better with more substance in the sandwich. In its current form, would suggest to remove it from the menu and focus on the chicken items. At $23, you get two thighs and two sides (priced at $5 each individually), so "most expensive chicken in nyc might be an overreach" but still pricey enough to make your wallet turn its head. I'm glad the price point comes with two appetizers because "best fried chicken in nyc" should be met with the same skepticism when a high school boy tells you "I've had sex". I was actually able to sample all 3 appetizers and the bean salad surprisingly slaps. Sweet potatoes are standard and the Brussel sprouts missed the mark. They were a little too dry... BUT the juices from the thigh overflow by the touch, so I was able to salvage it by mixing them together. Now I've had both the fried chicken sandwich and the 2 piece. For $14 how is my chicken not juicy? I think a lot of the flavor is dependent on the marinated garnish and... eh. The flavors are very Asian inspired and as an Asian, the novelty is lost on me. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that it'd fit in with one of NYC's many Chinese enclaves. And for the 2 piece-- same. On the outside, disguises itself as a dry rub from first glance. But one squeeze and it's a treasure chest chili flavors. I think the spice level is comparable to Taco Bell, so I wouldn't pack any diapers.
