We ordered the cheesy grits but didn't too much care for them. We took a couple bites of the grits but they were extremely bland and dry. We informed Hilla of how we felt about the dish but since there was a lack of a manager, she couldn't remove the dish from our bill. I've had nice full bodied, robust red wines to dry whites. If in doubt, try the Tony's Pony. You will love it! If you love a lamb burger then you are missing out! Hands down they have the BEST lamb burger I have ever tasted. It's well seasoned, not gamey, cooked just right, topped w/the smoothest, cremiest goat cheese and fresh arugula and served with cumin wedge fries. Gluten free bun for me. Been coming here fir years but not anymore. We always came fir the fish & chips but the last 3 experiences were horrible. The portion size was reduced and the batter was so heavy and tasted like it was cooked in old oil. We decided to switch it up and got the carnitas tacos and were inedible! They were tasteless and the carnitas was severely dried out. When we told the waiter he was indifferent and seemed annoyed that we even mentioned it. I really want to love this place. The ambiance is great, it's busy but not too loud for conversation, and the service, beer, and cocktails are fantastic. The food, however, is a gamble. I've been here many times. The fish and chips is fantastic, the macaroni and cheese is watery and the lamb burger has no flavor. The lamb burger is cooked perfectly rare, which I appreciate, but wasn't properly seasoned and the goat cheese overwhelmed it. All it needed was seasoning (salt, etc) and something to brighten the flavor. The chicken liver pâté is AMAZING though. I just wish I could trust what I was getting. I had high hopes for the Peckish Pig having been there prior to the pandemic and remembering it as quite good, both the service and food. What a change this time around. I took an out-of-town guest that I haven't seen since before the pandemic and the plan was to catch up over a leisurely dinner. To start, the service was terrible. We ordered our appetizer and main courses at the same time and I explicitly told the server that we did not want our main course until we had finished the appetizer (a charcuterie board) because we were there for a long overdue catch-up and wanted a very leisurely meal. Less than five minutes after being served the appetizer, our main dishes arrived! It was ridiculous. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was not edible--fried to a crisp and seemed to have come out of a box from the frozen aisle of the supermarket. I ate the fries and left the crispy mess to the side. (The photo of the beautiful fried fish in the bucket on their website is clearly photo-shopped.) My friend didn't say anything about his pork belly--I suspect he was being kind as the restaurant was my suggestion and the dinner my treat. I noticed that he only ate about half of it. I have never written a negative review of a restaurant, but last night's meal was so awful, both the rushed service and the food, that I feel compelled to write. read more

A pretty nice brunch spot in a location you least expect. The inside is a bit of a tight squeeze but the outside dining area is a very nice touch. I've gone on two separate occasions, once for dinner and once for brunch. The dinner was not all that memorable for me and the desserts are slightly lacking but that may be because of the atmosphere the establishment is trying to pull off. Terrible experience brought on by the management. A band set up and started playing 5 feet from our table, the music was VERY loud (I measured it as high as 97 decibels on my phone) and no one at our table could hear anyone who wasn't adjacent. When we asked to be reseated outside, the hostess was visibly annoyed and said no, though she did offer a table further from the band, which was not much quieter. Later the manager of the restaurant approached us after our waitress had the idea to see if the band might turn down their amplification. The manager treated this request as unreasonable and an affront and said "we absolutely cannot ask the band to turn it down." It devolved into an argument and we left never to return. I'm used to the bone marrow and beef cheek marmalade served at Au Cheval. It was only two bones and it barely had any marrow. For $12, I expected a little bit more. I think Au Cheval is $18 but you get 5 big bones full of meat plus the marmalade. It is a delightful entree or shareable. I can't remember the other items that were shared, however, they couldn't have been "THAT" good as I cannot remember, usually really good food, you don't forget. Great outdoor patio in Evanston. Came here with a group of 6 and were seated right away outside on the patio on a 70 degree night. We started off with the meats and cheese and bread board along with some bacon wrapped dates. Everything was perfect. I ordered the Duck Confit Mac and Cheese and it was pretty good. After I ran out of Duck though, I couldn't eat the mac and cheese. I also tried the Kale Burger, which I didn't like, it tasted too vinegry or something. The Lamb burger tasted better in my opinion. What stole the show was the deep fried brioche bread with nutella and strawberry. Definitely order this, it was by far the best thing I ate all night! Untrained staff spend a lot of time talking to one another, but not waiting on customers. This has been consistent from opening year to 2017. The final time, I was there with a friend a full 2 hours before closing, and yet, they did their best to kick us out and did so with a terrible attitude, lousy service, and a mop bucket full of bleach while we were eating. We hosted our son's college graduation party in their private room (The Pen). It went great! The space was beautiful yet casual (brick wall and exposed duct work), the food was delicious and the service was great. We had our own private server named Christian who was very professional and attentive. We had everything we needed. Everybody at the party commented on how much they enjoyed themselves and how delicious the food was. Many of them took leftovers home with them. Wonderful addition to the neighborhood! This is a really great place to relax and have a great meal and great beer. They have a few brews of their own (their IPA is really nice) and also rotate brews from temperance and revolution (among others) which allows for a nice variety. The staff all seem to be competent, experienced servers who really care about how they represent the establishment. This is one of my favorite spots in Evanston! The food is always innovative and unique. They're not afraid of trying new things and experimenting with different flavors and combinations. My favorites are the charcuterie platter, the honey comb and goat cheese, and the lamb burger. The drinks are also wonderful! They have an interesting variety to choose from and my favorite is the Samuel Smith Strawberry Ale. As for service, I've never had a bad experience. The staff is always very friendly and happy to give honest recommendations. I also appreciate how familiar they are with the food and how attentive they are. I thought service was good here for a rehearsal dinner but I am not sure the bride and her family agreed entirely. While I wasn't the first to arrive, I thought the employees did a great job going up to people and taking drink orders and making suggestions, since a bunch of people were coming out of town. On top of that, they kept up with a party of about 40 or so. I think we tried things like the charcuterie, waldorf salad, arugula and radicchio salad, and had pork belly and salmon. It was a good variety. They have an outdoor patio in back and there is a restroom in the private dining room. What a disaster. Wonderful ambiance , great indoor and outdoor seating. Lovely space. Friendly staff. But.... We sat outside on a quiet evening with the restaurant about 2/3 capacity. No one came to offer us drinks for about 10 min. The Sangria was supposed to be Rose based but was not . It was really nasty tasting. My fish on a plank was Hake (sp?) It was completely raw. No kidding. The lamb kebabs where terrible. Obviously precooked and warmed up. Dry as a bone , tough as leather , overcooked,no juice of any kind. A struggle to chew. After sending the fish away we were promised some free chocolates to ease the pain. two sad looking little prefab chocolate cups filled with some tasty toffee stuff showed up. The breakfast and lunch menus were extremely limited, which was initially disappointing, but the food was phenomenal. Peckish Pig brought back memories of my "hippy" days many years ago. It eclectic interior is complete with electric space heaters to keep drafts away from outer patio area. Men's room, had one too, along with a urinal covered with a trash bag to deter customers from using it. Vaulted exposed wood ceiling and bricks make it a rustic, cozy place to hang out. I went for Sunday brunch and ordered the best English -style breakfast. Two eggs any style with English style bacon ( pork loin), blood sausage, bangers, snd Heinz beans. All of which were cooked to perfection. The blood/rice pudding was grilled crispy. The plate was garnished with a roasted tomato wedge, sautéed mushroom and butter grilled bread. The menu has unique but delicious items such as lamb burgers with goat cheese and cumin fries. There is a unique selection of beers.
