I have only visited this location a few times because I don't find myself in Montclair too often. About a year and a half ago when my husband and I were buying our house and working with our Realtor at Alain Pinel (Michelle) in Montclair, this place was a lifesaver when we needed a place to consume a yummy caffeinated beverage while contemplating the huge financial decision we were embarking upon. I'd give them 5 stars except my last vanilla latte tasted like burnt syrup Update: Peet's is sending me a coupon for free latte, and also alerted management at this location of the deficiency so they can prevent it from recurring. I love Peet's. Been going to this location for 4 years BUT...this past Saturday was a nightmare. I've dealt with the crowds, the bad layout, messy parking, but this Sat. at 8am the store ran OUT OF COFFEE. Seriously. 5 people behind the counter and no coffee. My order for 2 small coffees had just been run up and then boom. The guy behind the register seemed really confused and mudddled, couldn't seem to remember our order, and rang it up incorrectly a couple times. To add to the mess, another customer wanted a refund on her credit card for her large order (she'd waited for 30 min) and none of the 5 staff knew how, so they all gathered around 1 register and proceeded to ring on our order. geez. This review is based on years of regular patronage at this location. Remodeled not too long ago, this Peets - practically in the heart of Montclair - is spacious, clean and the staff are very friendly. Before I got my espresso machine earlier this year, I was going several times a week - dog in tow. This staff started to remember me and my drink preferences and they always gave good advice on both coffee and tea selections. As with many other Peets, there is comfortable outdoor seating (a couple of benches that tend to fill up quickly) as well as good people-watching spots at the front window. Dogs are often to be seen out front and I would regularly hang out with my pup doing training and just chillin' out. There are two other coffee houses within 100 feet or so, but Peets is the one that gets my regular business. read more

This is definitely a place for the locals that like to interact. There are usually cyclists and other sporty people outside early on a Saturday morning. It is so refreshing to see patrons interacting and not always in a rush. Their coffee is WAY better than Starbucks. Peet's Medium is like Starbuck's bold. The coffees are not watered down and are very strong. The service is exceptional, or I have always had great service here. I love Peet's Jasmine Tea in teabag form. I feel very calm when I drink this tea. I usually have them add ice to the come because the water is very hot. read more

One of my favorite Peets locations because I always get speedy and friendly service. The baristas are awesome, my drink has always been made correctly and they seem to know and greet a lot of the regulars by name/drink, which makes people feel so welcome. I'm taking away 1 star because of the parking situation as well as the line process/interior space. The absolute most disgusting restroom I have ever been in. This is a busy spot because there is little room to sit in the Starbucks across the street. I walked into Peet's to grab a coffee and use my computer to answer emails. Half way thru thru my coffee I need to use the restroom. When I walked in I thought I was in a third world country. I said something to the manager and the "I don't care we are busy" attitude I received was unacceptable. I will never again go into a Peet's coffee anywhere again. An establishments restroom is an window into a company. This company is a disaster. Also when they pull beans off their roaster the entire place smells like burnt plastic. Come hear almost daily (online App order) for pickup before work/school. Today I ordered at 7:41 and was given window of 7:49-7:55. We did not receive our coffee's until 8:13! Mind you, these were 2 small drip coffee's, not some extravagant coffee that needs 2-3 people to concoct! This is not the first time that we had to wait, but it is the first time that my daughter was late to school, 8:15 start. We waited as people walked in ordered and received their handmade drinks and pastries. We asked twice about our drinks and were told they are extremely busy and will get to them. Then when we finally were served, we only got one drink and were told nothing about the other drink on the order (a simple small drip coffee). As I mentioned, we come here almost every weekday(check my account), and the morning customer service from these employees is FINE with Peets management??? You do know there is a Starbucks and Highwire literally 50 yards on each end of this Peets? I think I will spend my $50 per week on average, elsewhere! I've been going to this Peet's location regularly since it opened and am a fan for sure. I like their coffee best and the offer friendly service from a staff that seems to like the work and the people since there tends to be a lower turnover here than at many shops. There are seats inside and a couple of benches outside that sometimes get busy but it is a generally happy scene, especially on weekends with bikers and people with dogs stopping to chat and enjoy their various beverages. I like the decorations and while many Peets offer similar sort of ethnic coffee designs this place is a comfort spot that seems to attract people who are willing to say hello and smile. The Peet's policy is a free cup of coffee with the purchase of a pound of coffee or you can take a credit toward a latte or another drink of your choice. There is a basket where people toss their newspapers when they have read them and it seems if the line is long you can pick up something to read if you want to. Sometimes I get my news while waiting for a latte as a bonus. read more

I typically buy whole bean, grind at home fresh and use a pour over method to make my coffee -- a process that consistently produces a solid tasting cup of coffee. This review is for one of the new Peet's sandwiches. I ordered the Maple Chicken Sausage sandwich. It was almost inedible. I actually thought the sandwich would be made-to-order. Instead, it's pre-made, sitting in a fridge until someone orders it. The barista heated it up in a microwave. First, bread should not be put in a microwave oven. It ruined the bread's texture, making it tough and chewy. Second, the sandwich was so extremely hot that it burned my fingers through the paper bag it was in. I actually had to put it on a table and let it cool down before I could pick it up. Third, the "maple" must be some sort of flavoring mixed into the meat. Horrid; very artificial tasting with a strange after-taste. I did eat the sandwich, only because I was starving and in a big hurry. Otherwise, I would have thrown it away. It tasted like something that had been sitting in a 7-11 refrigerator case. Go a few doors down to Noah's for a quick, delicious sandwich. You can choose the type of bagel you want and they will toast it for you. Also, it will be made-to-order and fresh. read more

I couldn't be more thankful for this Peet's to exist. I'm one of those people that haunt the place for hours at a time. I draw, and this place could not be more perfect for me if I tried. First of all, the staff-- Nicest people I've ever met at a coffee place, or basically any sort of food or retail place, for that matter. They're quick, polite, efficient, make great drinks, and remember your order (not that that's at all necessary, but you have to admit it makes you feel nice). I've never had even the slightest hint of a sour experience with these guys. They keep the store clean, including the restroom, and the lines moving. Less importantly (technically-- to me, it's a big deal), the tables are the perfect height that I can hunch over and draw for hours on end, fueled on coffee. When you don't have a workspace at home, it's a godsend. The atmosphere is pleasant, mellow, and a mix of all the sorts that come through Montclair. I guess I've kind of become one of The Regulars, but it's amazing how different groups or individuals will come by and visit like clockwork, whether inside our on the benches outside. Anyway, it's all located in a perfect place to top it off. So, great staff, great store, great product, great location. read more

This is my Peet's location and I'm here almost every day. Peet's is the best coffee bar none. No one comes close to Peet's. I don't know what they put into it but I'm hooked! The staff is great although I don't like the turnover. I just get know to someone and they're gone. What is happening that they leave? I love the interior of this Peets since it was remodeled. That being said I'm a bit miffed to find out the items for purchase at the register such as the biscotti and the madelines is an area called the Sucker Impulse Bar. Wow Peet's. Good Peets. The employees seem happy, which generally means their manager isn't a total dick, and they make good espresso drinks. It's also one of the few that is set up properly and has enough space. Most of the Peets in the Bay feel like a fucking idiot designed them. There's too much shit everywhere, no space to stand while you wait for your drinks, and often only one condiment section so everyone crowds around it like they are Africans waiting for a god-damn Red Cross delivery. read more

I called this Peet's location around 8 am on Sunday to order two to-go coffee caraffes for my own baby shower. The person I spoke to on the phone was very nice and said it was no problem - I could pick up the coffee at 9:45 am. I arrived at the store around 9:55 am and there was a large line (which was one reason I had called in). When I walked to the drink counter to ask if I needed to stay in line if I was just picking up, she directed me to the beans counter and said I should wait there. I stood and waited as directed for less than 5 minutes until an entirely different attendant snippily told me that she could not help me if I did not wait in line. By this point, at least 5 more customers had entered the store and added to the nearly 10 who were already waiting. I went to the back of the line, but one of the other patrons kindly told me I could come in front of them. I waited another 7-10 minutes in line before being helped only to be told that my coffee carafes had not been started and I would need to wait. I left very upset and annoyed that well into my third trimester (and extremely obviously so), I had done everything to avoid this type of situation. This could have been avoided on so many levels had literally one of the employees asked my name when I arrived to check on my order and if the store established a very simple system for call ahead orders. I've worked in coffee shops before and I understand it gets busy, but this was beyond rude. In Montclair there are 2 other businesses to order coffee for groups, and I originally chose Peet's for a reason. I don't plan on patronizing this store again or the company if I can avoid it. read more

Um, has anyone noticed that the experienced, friendly, staff that used to be at Peets in Montclair are slowly being phased out? In their place young, no social skills having, no eye contact making, bad latte making, I am angst ridden and in my 20s type of folks are taking over. Everyone in Montclair knows that if you go to Peets between 8-10am on the weekday it's really crowded. But, who knew that when you go around 1pm on a weekday and there is NO ONE in front of you your latte still takes 10 minutes to make and is luke warm (this is being generous). I love, love me some Peets coffee, I just want the cool/righteous latte-making peeps to come back to Montclair. Seriously. Like yesterday before I had a shitty latte for the 5th time. I am very sad. So sad I may be forced to go to Starbucks. Save me from having to make this choice. read more

I choose Peet's as my coffee chain because they A) offer lowfat milk B) have friendly, knowledgeable staff who remember your drink and C) their drinks aren't sickly sweet like Starfucks. I was also born and raised in the Bay Area, and Peet's is an institution here. I remember going to the Menlo Park location with my Dad and Mom when I was growing up. I also like the fact that they have Fair Trade coffees, and coffees like "Las Hermanas" (The Sisters), a women's co-op that is "organic" (can't afford the official certification) and sustainably harvested, which gives back to a community in need. Awesome. The only bad thing about the location is the parking. A nightmare... I ride my motorcycle there mostly, but the few times I've had to drive, it's a ratmaze. read more

I always buy our ground coffee from this Peet's location and am always happy with the quality and generally happy with the service. Occasionally stop by for fresh coffee too, but ended up walking out twice in the past couple of weeks because none of the attendants cared about instructing people to wait in line! What seems to be frustrating at this store is the fact that there are two registers and no clear markings or instructions on where to form lines. I would be waiting in one line and another person would jump ahead of me to another register! The beans counter serves drinks and you can also order beans at the drink counter. I've consistently had really awkward experiences at this particular retail store of Peet's. The latest was Saturday with beans spilled all over the floor and nobody cleaning it up. People just walking around, grinding beans into the ground with their shoes. Kind of gross. The employees seem confused about gift cards, and unaware of sales promotions, and not really interested in making it right. The manager looks like she's hoping it's her last day on the planet. No reviews in 2019?? Maybe because regular customers are resigned and frustrated by now. Although the coffee (daytime) is always good, (the shop has some stellar baristas) the shop is almost always messy and dirty everywhere: floor, service bar, bathroom. WHY can't they get this sorted? Management should do something, like like pay extra or a bonus to the employee that will take on the cleaning tasks. They still haven't gotten the floor arrangement optimized: it feels crowded (not pleasantly) and hard to get seating. I local feel, I love that if there is music playing, it's not intrusive.
