My friend and I stopped into Peju this past Sunday and were incredibly disappointed. The grounds are beautiful and we looked forward to enjoying some of their wine. It was a steaming hot 106 degrees this afternoon. Because it was within 1 hour of closing and we were not interested in a tasting, we decided instead to have a few glasses of white. We were told that if we were not going to purchase a tasting package, we would have to drink our wine on the outside patio. Did I mention it was 106 degrees out? I asked if there were no other seats in the entire property to sit inside and the front desk said no. I mentioned that it was over a hundred degrees outside and not any condition for someone to sit, much less drink wine. His response: "Yeah I know". To make matters worse, I took a quick walk around and saw that there was plenty of seats inside the many rooms of this property. Including an upstairs balcony and lounge area. If the service that we received at the front desk is representative of Peju, I will never visit nor recommend it. Sending patrons to sit outside on an 100+ degree day when there is ample seating inside is an amateur move. Do better. read more

This is probably one of my favorite wineries in St Helena. The servers and workers are all extremely friendly and the tasting room is beautiful, well at least the one in the back with marble counters. The first time I went there, we were given a taste of their famous Provence and it was light, fruity and a great starter for the rest of the flight. I've been here several times and sometimes they choose different entrances so one of the times we were not offered the glass. There are a couple different counters for tasting, my favorite ones are the ones in the back with granite or marble counters and with a lot more light coming through the windows. The server we had was Devin and even though he was young, age 21, he knew what he was talking about. We learned he had been working there for many years and just recently started serving the wine but he knew the notes and flavors that were in all the wines we tasted. The Provence is what Peju is famous for and how the winery became what it is today and you can definitely see why when you taste it. Their cab was just as impressive if you're into red wines and their Pinot is also great as well. You could tell that these wines would be greatly paired with a steak or brisket so if you're looking for a wine later that day for when you go out to eat, come here and grab a bottle for the occasion! read more

This is a must see after it gets dark. A must see I say. With the way the lighting is and the building and all the art, it's a far departure from the sometimes bland decor that Napa can deliver. The wines are so-so, hence there being only 4 stars and not 5. But it is very much worth seeing. Oh yeah. They are open until 6 pm. Here's the deal ... the tasting costs you $10 (for 5 wines) and the wine is not all that great. The Carnival, Merlot, Zinfandel, were not up to par based on other wines we tasted that day. If you wanted to taste some of the other wines, their award winning ones, you had to pay more. The grounds are lovely, and so is the initial tasting room that you enter. Upstairs, the back tasting room seemed very unfinished. It felt like we were getting a hard core sales pitch (as stated by other yelpers) the entire time we were there. They should make you pay $10 when you enter, and then just go ahead with the tasting. (Then, like at other wineries, they could refund the $10 if you choose to buy a bottle.) Instead, you pay at the end, and our whole party felt pressured to buy something. With the lowest bottle being $16, it seemed like we should just buy a bottle, since it was "only $6 more." What this does is let Peju move their product. Which I understand, since they are a business. I guess I just don't agree with the business model ... which is fine. I will say that our tasting guy was unusual in a lot of ways, which also seems to pop up in other yelp reviews. He made some uncomfortable jokes about signing away a first born to buy a bottle of wine, kept yelling "Frankie" when he brought out the Cabernet Franc. He kept staring at the women in the group in an odd way, which both the women and men of the group commented on after we'd left. To build on what is a lovely place, I'd say Peju should charge for tastings as you enter and let the tasting experience stand on its own. Maybe let people choose the 5 they want to taste, or find a way to let us try the "expensive" ones without charging more. If people want to buy, let them do that after they taste. The way it stands now it feels like a pressure situation. And, the staff should aim to be a little more genuine and a little less salesy. I'd focus on info on the wines, stories about the winery and telling customers about personal favorites. These simple things could really enhance the experience at Peju. read more

I really like Peju because it's a sweet & quaint, little place with beautiful gardens, nice wines & gourmet items. If you go there, try their samples of Merlot Chocolate Fudge and Raspberry Cabernet Chocolate Fudge - and Chardonnay Caramel Sauce. They are delicious over ice cream, strawberries and crepes. The wines I suggest are: "Provence": Aromatic notes of bright cherry and raspberry tartlets, with a slight touch of cranberry and pretty floral notes. It displays flavors of fresh ripe red fruit with a hint of strawberry rhubarb pie. Its pleasing impression on the palate is followed by a refreshing finish. Serve slightly chilled. "Peju Pink": Powerfully fragrant, playful and provocative. Peju Pink has a crisp peach and passion fruit palate with pleasant tropical notes and ends with a pleasing finish. Perfect for sipping while enjoying the warm weather, it is low in alcohol and as refreshing as a summer breeze. Serve slightly chilled. "Carnival": Carnival evokes fragrant aromas of bright fruit with some floral notes of rose petal, magnolia and cantaloupe. Intense, yet delicate flavors peaches, apricot preserves, slight green apple with a hint of lychee and tropical fruit. Finishes round and refreshing. Serve slightly chilled. read more

I loved this place. I saw it from the road and instantly fell in love with the grounds. It has a great story (the place started out of their garage) and the staff were really nice. The guy who did our tasting was very knowledge but not snobby about it and didn't pressure anyone to buy. He was helpful and funny and I'm sad that I forgot his name...blame it on the wine. If you're looking for beautiful scenery and nice wine, give it a whirl. read more

This place was so great! Great gardens, fountains and sculptures as you walk to the door, and what's that? They're playing Modest Mouse over the speakers? A good omen.. You walk in and there are wine chocolates and homemade mustards to sample and local art to check out. You taste in groups so when we had enough people we went into the "tower" (aka the next room) for our tasting. The woman told us it would be $10 and we would taste four of their wines. In the end the guy poured everyone EIGHT different wines including a $95 bottle of the most delicious Cab ever - seriously the was the best red wine I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. My friend and I shared the tasting and bought a bought of the Carnival (a yummy sweet white, $18). If you buy any wine they waive your tasting fee. The bottles were about $20-$100. Peju is pretty. One star for that. I agree with the person who noted that this place is a tourist trap where they keep you herded in the gift shop for 15 minutes. How annoying is that? Thank goodness there were snacks for us to nibble on or we would have left immediately. The Peju mustard collection was actually very tasty. When we were finally summoned to the tasting area, we were more than annoyed with the awful rhyme that our host eagerly chirped at us. No rhyme out there is going to compensate for an inefficient operation! Sadly (although not surprisingly) the wine was terrible (the cabernet tasted like soap) and even worse, the guy pouring was a real clown. He offered no insight about what we were drinking and chose the offbeat "What's your inner animal?" question as our greeting. When he sensed that we weren't into his crude jokes, he actually began ignoring us and making off-handed comments to the people next to us about how they "had substance" (implying that us sophisticated visitors were somehow lacking...). He rushed the pours and failed to taste from the bottle before offering it to guests. After becoming exasperated, we walked out without paying, pausing briefly to explain how horrible the experience was. The hosts reply? "Just go." So we left. read more

Best winetasting experience ever. The "tour guide", Alan, did an excellent job of telling the story of peju, giving us the background of each wine, and keeping us engaged... oh and did i mentioned that he RAPPED the entire schpeel? it was hilarious/amazing and definitely got us buying a CASE of wine. The red/white blend, Provence, is amazing. It gives the best of both wines and will literally go with anything. The sauvignon blanc is good as well and i recommend this bottle. If you buy at least $30 worth of wine, the tasting fee is waived. Peju is a great place to go for pictures. The grounds are awesome and you can find plenty of places to make group photos, etc. The actual wine tasting, as stated by many reviewers, is different from most. Similar to a restaurant on a wait, they take your name and come get you when they're ready. Depending on the day, your wait time may be 5 minutes or 40. However, this gives you time to peruse the gift area, with many great items to purchase, or you can go upstairs and check out the winemakers timeline, or view the winemaking equipment and large photos of Peju's vineyards. Then you will be taken to one of several well-designed tasting bars for your Peju wine experience, which we found to be only slightly entertaining and informative, but friendly and casual. The wines here are as many have described - the more they cost, the better they taste... 50/50 is a very nice wine, but expensive; the cab is decent, and the sauvignon blanc is a good value. If you like koi fish, they have some very large, good-looking ones in the pond out front. read more

I haven't been to this winery in a long time and I'm so glad I decided to stop in again yesterday. The grounds are gorgeous, the wine is exquisite y reasonable, y the staff is some of the most memorable you'll meet in napa! Allen (one of the pourers) is an older gentleman with an insane amount of charm. Not only does the man know a lot about wind but he can also rap y he does! It's hilarious y such a good time! My friends and I enjoyed our visit to Peju. The estate is magnificent with great views and the inside is nice (though the A/C was blasting too much). Our host (forgot his name) was magnificent! He was very knowledgeable and funny. If you buy $35 worth of wine, your $20 tasting is complimentary. Their wines were pretty good (though I heard mixed reviews about their wines) and we enjoyed it! The Merlot, Cab, and Syrah were tasty; the Rose was a bit sweet for my taste; and the fifty/fifty was pretty delicious too! read more

Several us visited Napa a few months back before we headed to Pebble Beach so I apologize if this review is a little dated but thought I'd get it out there.. Recommended by a good friend as we had tasted their 2009 Cabernet Franc reserve recently which was one of the best wines I had had in 10 years... I couldn't wait to get to this place... Very attractive property north on Hwy 29 smack dab in the middle of everything... plenty of parking great grounds for photos... enter to nice waiting area with various items for sale etc... People couldn't have been nicer as they took as down to the tasting area with a group of other folks... Our tasting presenter was nice knowledgeable and went over each wine in detail for us... Some really nice wines and good cabernet's .. Why only 4 stars.. came here for Cabernet Franc and not 1 was on the menu or available.. Really nice place highly recommended as everyone here was top notch. read more

This was a lovely a winery! It was our third and last stop of the day. Everyone was pleasant. You don't pay until after. The tasting was $40/person which supposedly covered five wines, we definitely tried more than 5. They kind of tailored the tasting to me as I'm not a huge red wine drinker which I really appreciated! This is by far my favorite vineyard Napa. Every single one of their wines is fantastic. Ask for Patrick if you do a tasting.

There are so many vineyards in Napa that it takes alot for some to "stand out". Of course, you have the power houses like Mondavi or Domaine Chandon...or, you have the perfectly staged locations like Copia...but, when you're looking for someplace a little less commercial and not as frantic as V. Sattui, consider Peju. Their wines are delightful and reasonably priced. Also, you don't crowd around a bar vying for the sommelier's attention. They take small groups to intimate little settings where you have the undivided attention of their wine expert. Not tho mention, the vineyard is beautiful...gorgeous landscaping, lovely sculptures and adorable prints (that can be purchased). As for the Cab and Zins...they are much better when they've been allowed to breathe...also, much less expensive than other vineyards... read more

Dont believe what these people are saying. I have been a member here for over 7 years and love each and every bottle that they have sent. The last shipment that I got, one of the bottles was corked. I called them and told them and they immediatly sent out a replacement bottle. No questions asked. Great wine, great service. Yes the lines can get long, but that is what you get in Napa. read more

Peju is one of my favorite wineries to visit, (and I get paid to drink for a living!) The tasting room is beautiful, especially the natural stone bar in the room furthest from the entrance. The gardens are also worth the visit, with human-high flowers and an eclectic collection of sculptures. Caveat: We went to Peju for the VERY last tasting of the day because we were leaving early the next morning and my mom still didn't have a shipping box to get her wines home...we called Peju; they had a box; it had been recommended by my good friend; they were open; we went. Verdict: Upon my early arrival, I was skeptical and, to be candid, really disgusted/unhappy with how unprofessional and drunk the entire setting was. Not exactly what I seek in a wine tasting experience on a trip to Napa. HOWEVER, my ultimate concluding perception was one of delight and satisfaction at Peju. Thanks to Anthony for his patient explanations, professionalism, and extra effort. The Story: SO, we arrive and are waiting in the lobby with a bunch of drunk, immature, and, frankly, quite rude kids. We are told that it will be about 5-10 minutes. They said that that they have a few tasting areas and they keep the groups to 10-12 people to ensure that you get a more one-on-one description of the wines. That said, we at last get herded into a room with about 20 other people, many of whom can hardly see. It felt more like being at a bar around 3am vs. at a winery trying to appreciate the quality of a winemakers' hard-earned work. SO, we tolerate this for the first two pours (many of which were being chugged by other customers and quickly refilled), but after the wine pourer starts barking and the girls/cougars (sorry, I couldn't resist) next to us start squealing, we had to get out of there. My mother, sister ,and I tell Anthony (the young guy working the floor) that we are going to leave because it's too rowdy and chaotic in the tasting area. Instead of powerlessly apologizing, Anthony takes the initiative to offer us a tasting in the outer room. He asked what we liked and he gave us a special tasting of several wonderful red wines. He was very poised and gave a professional, yet approachable explanation of the wines and the Peju property/philosophy. Rather than leaving upset or disappointed, we left feeling that Peju had been attentive and that the wines were something to appreciated. The Cab Francs were great (especially the 2003)...and I ended up with a younger Cab Franc + a tasty jalapeno mustard as well. Very pleased and will go back. My advice: unless you're drunk and up for a rowdy experience...go to Peju earlier in the day :) read more

My group of 5 had a great time here, thanks to the Napa Rappa aka Alan. Aside from his hilarious descriptions versed in rap, the wine was delicious. I had my flip cam in my hand but was so shocked at his raps that I couldn't even get him on video fast enough! In all seriousness, the wines are really amazing. We truly enjoyed the Provence which is a rose type blend. It was delicious and we bought 6 bottles. This was our first visit and our friends second, definitely worthy of another visit! Having a preference to cabernet, especially the darker-full bodied ones (like a fabulous brunette), I found the 50/50 reserve special to be on my shortlist of wines that I consider 'fabulous'. Full and powerful taste and bouquet, with an equally powerful and different after-taste, Its priced fabulous as well. The rest of the place is on par for napa. Verdict: 5 stars 0 stars = don't go there if you're life depended on it. 1 stars = tried it, attempted to drink it, and paid the price for it later 2 stars = tried it, but would not even recommend it your mother 3 stars = tried it, tasted ok and had issues with either service, decor, or price, but would be willing to go back if no options available. 4 stars = par for the course. This is such an awesome winery to experience. Everyone is so friendly from the time they open the front door to you to the tasting room and the tours. The servers are awesome and explain the wines, textures, and pros and cons of each wine. Some of the servers are the among the most vivacious of any winery I have visited in Napa or Sonoma. They really are here to make sure you have fun and enjoy what you came for -- good wine! The wine club offers free tastings at anytime. They also give you four free tastings at the time of sign up and discounts on bottles purchased. My favorite wine tasted was Provence California Red wine.......it blends white and red wines so an absolutely amazing flavor. It is served chilled and great with BBQ, seafood, and salads. If you are up for a fun, vivacious group of people,, definitely add this winery to you list to visit! read more

I feel like people might not take my review seriously, because I don't know anything about wine. I've gone to Napa a few times, and I admit to going for the experience and views. I always learn new things. This place is very fun. The staff is excellent. The man who served us was telling jokes and doing different accents. HIlarious! He also answered whatever questions you asked about the wine without being snobby. I went with a group of 6 girls for a birthday. We are friendly, but not loud or obnoxious. He comped one of our tastings, because my friend did an accent. He also offered us more than 4 tastings. He was friendly to everyone at the counter, and it seemed that everyone was having a great time. Afterward, we sat by fountain in the garden to relax before our dinner reservations. Great experience. The only thing I didn't like was the $30 purchase instead of by bottle that waives the tasting price since most of the bottles that were on the tasting menu were just slightly udner $30. read more

I definitely have to say after reading the reviews about this winery, my 4 stars has to go to the gentlemen who was pouring our tasting because it sounds like its the person you have pouring your wine more than anything else. I really wish I would have wrote his name down....he truly was the best!! Initially when I walked in, I was fascinated by the gorgeous artistic statues and glass that surrounded this place. We were immediately asked if we were there for wine tasting and we answered "yes" and he pointed to the back where one of the tastings was being held. Upon entering the other rooms, the older man noticed we were looking around and didn't follow his original "directions"......he seemed annoyed (as if we couldn't look around???) And said "are you guys NOT wine tasting"?! Finally making it to the back we were greeted by a very friendly man who was doing the "session" and caught us up on the tastings. Sure the pours are not a lot but was pleased he just kept pouring different kinds and didn't stop. I want to say he poured us 7 to 8 different kinds of wine and would have kept going if me and my friend had not told him to stop cuz we made our decision on a bottle. :) The menu says the tasting fee is waived IF you buy a bottle of $30 or more. The amount of my purchase was $23 (for the bottle) and everything else was waived anyway!! We had a great guy who was down to earth, sweet, informative and just plain interested in the people he was pouring for. REALLY wish I would have got his name, cuz that is the guy you should go to!! I would give this place a 5 if all of the staff were like Richie, but upon my most recent visit I was disappointed at the wine server "Jimmy" that seemed put-out and disinterested in conversing with me and my friends. Richie, on the other hand, was fantastic when my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place a month ago on my birthday. It was the only winery open past 5pm and we were astonished at the finesse of Richie's hospitality. Not only that but the wines were great - especially their Zinfandel. We took a bottle home to my boyfriend's parents for a family dinner and continued to laugh for hours after finishing it. Everyone was mentioning that it must have been the wine so this time around we decided to buy two more bottles and see if the laughing potion still worked...and it did! Beautiful landscape, tasty wine, open later than other wineries....but don't forget to ask for Richie! And tell him the couple with the high metabolism sent you. ;) read more

This was a fun experience. Probably wouldn't go back. Their tasting is more like a show; the pourer is definitely putting on a rehearsed act. But he's very entertaining and the overall experience is pretty fun! They're open later, so I recommend going at 5 with a nice buzz on and socializing during the tasting. :) sort of feels like a murder mystery dinner with all the theatrics. The wine itself, contrary to the script, is not good at all. I was not a fan. But the prices are (however still too high for what you get), lower than you'd see elsewhere in Napa. Especially for getting a free tasting for checking in on yelp, this is a great tasting room for those more interested in the experience than the wine. read more
