Very quiet in this restaurant. It wasn't busy for it being lunch time. The lunch menu was affordable. One draw back was the free salsa and chips. Our salsa came with the added addition of a long black hair. We brought it to the attention of the server because yuck! She gave us a new bowl of salsa. Nothing comped and no apology by manager.. so that's fun. Our lunch order was already placed so we took our chances there wasn't added extras in the meal. The food was very good. Conveniently located off US 411. Nice ambiance. Service was fast and personnel courteous. Food was good.

Huge disappointment. One and done for us! 1. Rice had no taste whatsoever! 2. Refried beans were watery. 3. Our enchilada's had uncooked cheese inside (See pic). The shredded cheese was thrown in and microwaved, which made the plates hot enough to burn your fingerprints off but did nothing to the cheese. 4. The customer service was terrible; no greeting, no smiles, no follow up during the meal and no asking how everything was at the end of the meal. Good bye and good riddance! read more

This is a very nice Mexican restaurant. We were greeted at the door and seated immediately on arrival. Our server arrived as we were being seated to take our drink orders and give us the chips and salsa. Drinks arrived quickly. The server took our orders; Fillet Veracruzano me and Chicken Taquitos for my wife. To start the chips we're very fresh and the salsa was quite nicely spiced. Our entrees were served very quickly and were just perfect. My fish fillet was nicely sautéed and covered with a red sauce. My wife's Taquitos were very large and filled with very tender white chicken meat. She also raved about the pico de gallo, but not until she had finished it. My husband and I were in the Maryville area, so we decided to give this place a try. No complaints! The staff is kind, friendly and they follow the CDC guidelines and regulations. The food is exceptionally delicious, as you saw from the menu photos, there's great variety and you are able to substitute for something else. We were greeted and got a table the minute we walked in. Their salsa is delicious and my husband asked if they had a spicy salsa, the friendly waitress brought it out quickly. I love that there's also a bar area. I ordered the vegetarian chimichanga, which came with side of rice, refried beans, pica de gallo and sour cream. My husband ordered chicken fajitas with also the same sides. I decided to update my review from last time. I didn't think a place could get much worse but it did. Our order was so overly salted you couldn't taste the food And I guess that was to hide the fact that food was either out of date or about to spoil because everyone that ordered food got sick. This is just another place on 411 to avoid. Hopefully the board of health catches them in the act soon, before they kill someone. read more

Ordered from El Barril tonight. We were very disappointed. All of the food was very bland. I ordered a beef chimichanga with rice and beans. It was ground beef that seemed to have no seasoning whatsoever. As I got a couple of bites in, I realized that the ground beef was undercooked. The rice was completely soggy and saturated with cheese. I understand that some of that will happen during transportation, but it really was saturated. Complete mush. The beans were even watery and flavorless. Thank goodness the chips and salsa were edible, because that ended up being my dinner. I really wanted to like this place. Decent atmosphere, our server (Ariana) was super-nice and very attentive. The food, while fresh and cooked just fine, was probably the single most bland Mexican fare I've ever tasted. I had the beef chimichanga and hard shell beef tacos. The beef in both items was completely tasteless, and due (I assume) to the inclusion of large slices of onion in the chimichanga, upon cutting into it, it was full of moisture and made the tortilla soggy. My wife ordered the burrito Mexicano, which is supposed to come with pork and is one of her faves at other establishments. After ordering it, we were informed by the cook that they were out of pork, so she ordered it with chicken instead.. she said it was "ok". We also ordered Guacamole to go with our chips, I was expecting fresh, tasty guac, but I'm relatively certain it was packaged guac, like "wholly guacamole"... It did taste like it was fresh-out-of-the-package, for what it's worth. Their salsa is also rather boring and tastes 'out of a jar'. I feel bad for criticizing their food so much, because the cook and our server we're very kind and the atmosphere was very friendly, but I think the ownership and cooks at El Barril should take a field trip to someplace like Casa Fiesta in Lenoir City to see how much better their food could be. read more

Certainly a step above most places in the area as it tastes fresh as opposed to bottled or canned, and had a zip much better than the normal bland Blount County salsas. My Chili Colorado was plentiful, flavorful and head sweating spicy!! Just the way I like it!! The service though was lacking, though through no fault of the waitress. She was by herself, serving guests at more than a half dozen tables spread across the restaurant. I don't consider it her fault that drinks went un-refilled and check-out was slow. This was my first time here. I ordered two tacos and a side of beans. I paid extra to get lettuce and tomato. The tacos had nothing but meat in them and the extra lettuce and tomato I ordered. The meat was decent the lettuce was not the freshest. There was little flavor. I looked around the table to see if I could add some sauce or something and instead just wound up adding some salt and asking for a To Go box. The side of beans was ok. it didn't have the magic deliciousness of most Mexican restaurants. I thought beans would be safe. The complimentary chips and salsa we're, "meh." I was planning to order some fried ice cream, but decided to not take my chances. I don't think I'll be coming back unless somehow I find out about a much better dish. My first impression are that the flavors need to be improved. It was not expensive. My meal with the "extras" was about seven dollars. The tacos came with a lot of meat. There are better options (Panchos) just up the road. I did go there to get some fried ice cream. I'm new to TN. **Warning**This company does not honor the coupons it has printed in The Mint. My husband and I went there for the first time tonight, we ordered the number 6 combo and the Carne Asada tacos. We also ordered an Iced Tea and a Margarita. The bill came out to $28.77 and I presented them with a coupon that reads " Buy a dinner & 2 drinks, get a second dinner of equal or lesser value 1/2 off." Our server Fidelina informed me that they would not honor the coupon because one of the drinks was alcohol. Mind you no where on the coupon does it indicate this, and we were not eating during happy hour. El Barril is an perfectly decent restaurant. I like to consider myself a pretty big fan of Mexican food. There is nothing wrong with El Barril, but there isn't anything overwhelmingly special. I had the arroz con pollo, and the portion size was very good, but the food was nothing to write home about. If I am in the neighborhood, I would go back, but it's nothing that I would seek out. We have eaten here several times and even ordered takeout. The staff has been friendly each time, the food has been very tasty and the portion sizes are plenty and the prices are fair. My husband gets the fajitas (has tried a couple of different ones) and enjoys them. He got the stuffed jalapeno pepper and they were tasty. The nachos are different than I am used to with lettuce on them but they were good (and I suppose that is normal for the area since the other place we tried did that too). Overall a two because we almost walked out before we were seated. While waiting for for the hostess , we could not help but notice the torn and tattered seats and how dirty the floor was around the front door. Everything from straw wrappers to toothpicks to a large piece of food was right inside the entrance. We were about to walk out when the waitress addressed us. Once we sat down, the floor inside was still dirty but the waitress' was nice enough that we stick it out. The margarita machine was broken and I was happy to have a top shelf on the rocks for our trouble. The service was good and the food was too. Price was also good.
