My boyfriend and I decided that we wanted fresh fish to grill for Memorial Day weekend to switch it up a little. We also decided on the grouper throats (a mix of gag and red grouper), some gag grouper filets, and a piece of smoked mullet. They used to be the best but no more. I bought pounds extra large shrimp and I had to throw it away it was old.

Compare to Holiday Seafood just a few doors down, Pelican Point has longer hours and a much larger selection, so we come here when we don't get to the other place. Pelican Point is owned by the same family of the wildly popular Rusty Bellies next door. Or rather, the family opened the seafood shop first, then a restaurant which expands to be probably the largest and most popular place on Sponge Dock. The same fleet and distributors supplies both place, and if you want freshly caught fish, this is the place. Especially if you want local fish caught the same day and don't own a boat. Or if you want something further afield such as Alaskan king crab, salmon, oyster and all that. You'll likely be impressed with the selection, fresh in the display case and frozen in the fridge. We wanted some very fresh seafood so we drove to the docks in Tarpon Springs and visited Pelican Point Seafood. Everything is very fresh here because the fishing boats unload their catch right outside this store. The inside is very small and old, so it can get very cramped if a dozen people are buying seafood. There is an L-shaped display with every type of local seafood and some distant seafood like New England lobsters. We bought some red snapper and shrimp for a few dinners. We had the snapper for dinner tonight and it was really fresh and good. Be sure to bring a cooler if you are a long way from home. Fresh seafood does not like a hot car. read more

We have been going to Pelican Point for 18 years. The fish is the fresh in all the area plus the staff are friendly and helpful. Only reason for 4 stars is the parking is horrible. There are 3 spaces in front and it's getting harder and harder to park there. Can't they have 10 or 15 minutes parking for the store only. Whenever I visit Tarpon Springs, I always make sure to bring a cooler, because my final stop is Pelican Point Seafood to bring home some very fresh Florida seafood which they'll clean, season, steam, and pack down in ice for your trip. Pelican Point Seafood sits on the traffic circle at the far western end of Dodecanese Boulevard, and right next door to Rusty Bellies Seafood Restaurant. Since the 1970's this locally-owned and operated fishmonger has prided itself on carrying a wide variety of local seafood, unloaded directly at their dock by local fisherman. Pelican Point also carries a variety of hard to find seafood items, however they strive to provide domestic wild caught products. Pelican Point carries whole fish, filets, shrimp, oyster, clams, squid, octopus, live blue crabs, scallops, smoked fish and more. Pelican Point is also responsible for most of the seafood processing for Rusty Bellies Waterfront Grill which is owned by the same family. This requires a significant amount of time and labor as each shrimp served in the restaurant is peeled and deveined in-house, as well as all of the fish is filleted and portioned by hand daily. If you want a great seafood meal, then walk next door to Rusty Bellies, and try to sit outside on the shaded deck. But if you want to take some of this great seafood back home, then pop into Pelican Point Seafood right next door. If you've been out fishing on the Gulf on a private boat, then you can arrange for these folks to clean your fish, fillet it, and pack it down on ice for you. You can also walk along their display cases to see what's sitting on ice, and ready to take home. You'll usually see different styles of grouper, snapper, black bass, mackerel, and other fish caught by line; along with mounds of fresh Gulf shrimp, oysters, scallops, and more. I generally buy some grouper fillets or snapper, smoked fish dip, and a couple of pounds of peeled and deveined Gulf shrimp. Those all go right into the cooler which the folks at Pelican Point will top off with ice for me. Pelican Point is a fantastic place for very fresh seafood, and I highly recommend that you check them out on your next trip to Tarpon Springs. read more

The Gulf of Mexico meets your pallet with fresh seafood! Gazing out across the bayous of Tarpon Springs, Fl from outside the Pelican Point seafood market is amazing. Watching the dolphins and tarpon roll against the backdrop of the mangroves is breathtaking. The sponge boats go up and down the Anclote River and the Greek language you always hear in the distant as they go out to harvest sponges from the plentiful ecosystem that is Tarpon Springs, Fl. Pelican's land and dive right off the deck of the shrimp boat they have behind the seafood market. Everyone is so friendly. I was there during stone crab season and bought a few pounds of medium claws. Jumbos are the best, but sometimes they are floaters. A floater claw means that the claw physically/topically looks the same as a normal jumbo claw. The weight will be off though when they weigh the claws, so it does work out, sort of...In a normal claw most of the weight is in the meat, but in a floater claw, most of the weight is in the porcelain crab claw exoskeleton (shell that encapsulates the muscle). I have talked to a few FWC biologist and a few Ph.ds at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Pete. I also consulted with my friends at the University of Maimi on Virgina key. There are many factors that influence the growth of stone crab claws. Climate, current, access to food. You have a cold winter that kills all of the snook and other inshore saltwater species then the next season the stone crabs are plentiful, because they are eating all the dead fish. Same with Red Tide (which is disgusting). Fish die from the cold or the red tide (thank you fertilizer) and cascade to the bottom of the gulf. Blue Crabs, Spider Crabs, Stone crabs and other small crustaceans feed off the dead fish carcasses. This, in theory, creates a population boom and grows more of a surplus and the market for tourism and the experience of being in Florida is exploding. The variety of gulf species that pelican point seafood harvests and the national distribution channels they have is incredible. For example, you can get oysters from Canada that were shipped overnight. They have muscles, oysters, red grouper, black grouper, mangrove snapper, mullet, yellow tail snapper (my favorite), shrimp, crab and frozen fish sticks for the kids. I recommend this place on all levels, the experience and the quality and service. 5 Stars for Pelican Point! read more

So I have a much closer fish monger (by 10 miles) but they sold me some imported crab meat thinking it was local or at least in the states then I came across this place while visiting tarpon springs. This place is great. They have almost any fish that can be caught local from several types of grouper, grunts, mackerel black bass etc. they sell filets or you can but an entire fish and have them clean it to your desire at no extra charge (there is a tip jar of you wish) They literally are right on the water and you see the fishing vessels (fv) unloading their catch. There is a free parking lot nearby but on the weekends it is full so you either will have to pay for parking or wait. read more

Such a great spot. I had tried to come before but parking on the weekend isn't always great on the Sponge Docks. I am very glad I came back. Parking is free which is awesome. This place is awesome. The fish is fresh and must have been caught that day. They don't have a huge selection of fish but what they do have is super fresh. It is a bit pricey but keep in mind that the docks are a bit touristy. I purchased fresh shrimp and it was so tasty. The staff is extremely helpful and courteous. Pelican Point Seafood is my second choice of seafood market at Tarpon Spring. Just about 500 hundred feet away from my favorite "Holiday Seafood," Pelican offers much larger selection of seafood. Fresh fishes, clams, mussels, shrimps, scallops, are on display at the cooler. Frozen crabs, octopus, cuttle fish and smelt are in freezer. It is The place to buy seafood if you haven't made your mind what to buy. You will get something for sure. Price is a bit higher, but the quality of its seafood worth the dollar. If you want to buy a fresh whole fish to grill, you are at the right place. They have at least 8 different fishes to choose from and price varies. I bought a mangrove snapper last Sunday and I paid 19 dollar (6.99/pound). Staffs are very helpful and answer all my questions including how to grill the fish properly. The fish turned out delicious. When it is busy like last Sunday when I was there, you gotta wait for a while. There were four staffs work behind the counter and they were all multitasking simultaneously. But I still waited for 15 minutes. So just be patient and play on your social media while you are waiting. read more

Had a lovely young lady help me..... appreciated her "inside" input. They don't have a HUGE selection of fish, but you can find some fresh stuff, like grouper and snapper. I got grouper cheeks and scallops, as well as squid. All were fresh and good EXCEPT the squid. This tasted like it came from a chemical sewer....probably from somewhere along the Anclote River where the superfund site is, but it was shockingly gross. I had to fish out every piece from my recipe.... thankfully, I tasted it before I actually let it ruin my ceviche. Get the grouper cheeks!!! They make fantastic apps or sandwiches. Their snapper looked great as well. Good fish store for basic needs. Went again and purchased whole shrimp. Once again... just plain chemical taste. The prices are high, but you get what you pay for. Fresh seafood, literally just plucked from the sea. It can take a while to put in your order (this place was packed when we went there), but they take their time to explain the fish to you and tell you how to prepare them. My son is an avid deep sea fisherman and always said his favorite fish is hogfish. Pelican Point is one of the few places you can find it for sale and it's celestial. We always go to Tarpon Springs for Greek food when in Florida and i looked up "fresh seafood" and this place popped up. I looked online and it said they were out of everything so i called. I spoke with Amy and she told me the Boats came in yesterday and they have plenty of fresh seafoood, the website was for availability for online ordering (a bit confusing, but that's why i called). So after lunch i grabbed my cooler and walked 2 blocks to Pelican S.C. bought Grouper, Red Snapper, Shrimp, Stone Crab and 2 fresh crabcakes ($76, portions were lg enough for several meals, fyi). We've eaten all of it except the Snapper and it's all been so delicious and fresh. Counter service was VERY helpful and quick service and they offered extra ice and packed my cooler for me. This place is out at the far end of the Sponge Docks right on the river, location alone exudes authenticity. Very to the point seafood market with incredibly fresh items to choose from. Staff was friendly and seemed knowledgeable. Not a ton of selections, primarily shrimp and a few selections of fish but I'd rather have those few selections and know that it is fresh fresh fresh. We got a couple varieties of shrimp and they were great. A little expensive, likely due to the location being in a very touristy spot, but still worth the cost based on the freshness. read more
