I grew up in the Midwest, with a typical "meat and potatoes" diet. On the rare occasion that seafood was on the menu, it was typically a frozen variety like Groton's, or the occasional fish fry at the Elk's Club. That's changed since moving to the Gulf Coast of Florida, where the fish at the local restaurant today was probably swimming yesterday. My "go-to" seafood now is a grouper sandwich which I order blackened but NOT fried. I've sampled grouper sandwiches from many local dining establishments, but my favorite is from "Carvor's Fish House" A couple of important notes: 1) Carvor's is only open for LUNCH. Their hours vary, so you'll want to check the website, but they typically close at FIVE PM, with the last order accepted at FOUR PM. 2) Carvor's has NO inside dining The patio is tree-shaded with extra umbrellas but if it's really hot, you may be uncomfortable. 3) Carvor's has COUNTER SERVICE. You go inside, order your food and THEN go back outside and select a table. When your food is ready, a server will bring it to your table. 4) This is downtown Dunedin, and parking can occasionally be a challenge on Douglas Street, but FREE parking is available in the city parking garage across the street. I've only been there twice. The first time I just had an appetiser which was really good. Unfortunately, I can't remember which one it was. The next time, we went for lunch and they were out of some things that we initially ordered, but we ended up with a heating plate of fried things that kind of felt like bar food. It is a cute spot and I would probably try it again. I just did not think it lived anywhere near up to the hype that most locals give it. read more

We ate at quite a few Seafood restaurants while visiting Dunedin, but this was our favorite. I ordered the Grouper Trio, Fish, shrimp and Scallops. They we coated with a very thin coating of breading and cooked just right. The onion rings were fixed the same. Thee slaw was a tropical, sweet serving. My wife got the White Fish and Onion Rings. The service was exceptional and our server went out of her way to make sure our meal was just right. Make sure you add this location to your list if you visit. Husband and I can for lunch on Friday around 12:30 pm and we're able to get free parking at parking deck across the street which was super convenient. I ordered the fried grouper sandwich and Cole slaw per the recommendation of the friendly staff. Husband ordered the blackened grouper sandwich and potato salad (which has eggs). We shared the hush puppies which were outstanding. The sandwiches are superior and such a large side neither of us finished the entire thing. The key lime bar was also amazing. This shaded patio called out our name and the weather was seriously perfect to hang out here. Carvor's Fish House is part of JENSON Bros. Seafood Market. They serve up fresh and frozen fish and seafood here. The only non fish seafood would prob be some sides. So Salty Soul is next door for non seafood lovers which we went too also. I ordered a fried grouper sandwich and picked conch fritters as my side. This sandwich was huge and the fish is light and flaky. It's the local fish here so it's super popular in the restaurants. It was very good. Everyone working was very nice. Enjoyed this dog friendly patio and the egret scoping out the tables for food. For some reason though, I did have an upset tummy after this. Being in Florida, you need to like fish, me not being from Florida, it's a hit or miss. Training my palette to like fish has been okay but occasionally quite wonderful, Carvors Fish House helped that along. If you don't love fish, usually fried will get you along. This was my first time trying to fish balls, reminiscent of hush puppies, but also not. Maybe they were conch? I'm sorry, can't remember, the fry was a little weird and the inside a little gummy for it. Didn't love that but the fish and chips were outstanding. My partner (you'll find him in a one of the pics) had the tacos and the flavor was on point but the taco shell was too moist from the filling and was falling apart. Needed two shells to hold the filling in place, or a less wet filling. Service was solid. read more

Hands down best seafood we've had in quite some time. This is a Bay Area gem! And a must try if you love seafood. Located in downtown Dunedin and an outside seating only establishment. You walk up and order and go choose a seat outside. They'll bring your order to your table. Only 6 parking spots available so I recommend parking at the City Hall public parking and walking to this place. The walk isn't bad at all and well worth it. I ordered the seafood platter which comes with fried shrimp, scallops, fries, and cod. I also got a fried green tomato on the side. I loved the food. The breading was light and didn't fall off. Loved the vibe here. Reminded us of vacationing in the keys. Very chill and nice outdoor seating. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful even though they were slammed during a lunch rush. My husband had the seafood sampler, which was delicious. I kept stealing off of his, so good. I had the blackened grouper sandwich, which they said was one of the highlights of the menu. I didn't love the spices on it, but that's just a personal preference and it sounds like a lot of people enjoy it. I think I would get the fried grouper sandwich next time or maybe a basket. I LOVED the hush puppies. Wow yum do not skip, they were huge. There's also wine and looked like some rotating specials. This is one of our favorite places to visit when we come to Florida. We've been here two weeks and we went there three times already. Fish is the freshest you can get out of the water. The group of sandwich is amazing crabcakes great grouper finger basket amazing. Fresh salads served on the side with any sandwich or basket you go inside and order and get a number and then sit outside on a beautiful patio for the waitress to deliver it to you. We had a delicious lunch at Carver's Fish House, sitting on a picturesque shaded patio. I had scallops and a glass of wine; my wife had an excellent sandwich of fresh tuna salad on an onion roll. Not being "regulars" we had to learn and adjust to their "system"; they insist that you order and pay before being seated, and their "table service" simply means they'll carry your food to your table once it's ready. A friend recommended the crab and shrimp salad, but it appeared only available for takeout so we didn't try it. The takeout and eat-in are situated together, adding to the confusion. Why Didn't I Know About this Place Sooner? Dunedin has a lot of great little restaurants. I don't know how this one didn't show up on my radar sooner. The outdoor seating is very nice. The staff were all great. The prices were good. I started with the smoked fish. While I enjoyed it, the fish needed a little more flavor from the smoking process. I added some vinegar, salt and a bit of hot sauce. I had plenty to take home. For my main I had fish & chips. The fish was cod and there were four large pieces in a thin crust. It was moist and flaky and delicious--one of the best fish & chips I've ever had. The fries were crunchy and tasty. I had a side of cole slaw and, unlike in many places, it was tangy and delicious. Meh. I was so excited to try this place because it had great reviews. The staff was nice and overall vibe is fun but we were disappointed in the food. The fries and tots taste like they're fried in the same oil as the fish. They all taste fishy. The fish & chips has a very light breading on it. It seemed fresh, but personally I like a more traditional breading. You have to eat it with a fork, rather than picking it up. The grouper was edible. Shrimp tacos had waaaay too much spicy sauce on them. So basically, we ended up throwing away most of our lunches. If I was a tourist and this was the seafood I was trying, I'd be really unhappy. It might have just been an off day, but I don't think we'll be back for a while. read more

Upon recommendation from seasoned regulars, I couldn't resist trying their fish and chips, and I'm glad I did. Order 2 crab cakes nice size and seasoned well and delicious with a side of slaw. Made in house fresh, light . Grouper was fresh, grilled and seasoned well and a nice portion.the hush puppies were the best I have ever had big, sweet, soft and crunchy all at the same time. No need for any dipping sauces. No picture of my grilled grouper sandwich. I scarfed it down so fast. This is what I'd call a true hidden gem. I want To get the worst out of the way first so... there is not great parking and seating is only outdoors with no fans outside but lots and lots of natural shade. If you are in the area looking for lunch drop by here. I feel like the seafood is top notch in taste & quality. The prices aren't bad for the size of the filet you get. There isn't a bar but they serve bottles and cans of various drinks. The key lime bar is also awesome !! It's more creamy and not very tart from limes but it still grasps the key lime concept. It's a counter - order system and they will bring it to your table when it's ready. They make beautiful use of the space and it feels like a piece of quiet when you outside. read more

Reviewed on 4/1/24 After putting our order in, Cuz, and I picked our table outside, and anxiously waited for our lunch. The place was not jammed packed but our order took quite a while to arrive. The food, when it was brought out, looked very delicious, and nicely portioned, but after we both sampled our fish and onion rings, we found nothing special about the servings which lacked any flavor in the fish coating and onion rings. The conch fritters that were served were very good, filled with chopped conch, and really nicely seasoned, a real home run. read more
