I called Pendulum Faire Clock Shopp to repair my grandfather clock, and Roman came out and said it was a simple fix to the pendulum and got it working again. He charged me $125 for the home visit, but two months later the same problem happened again and my clock is no longer working. I've called several times over the last week and I get a voicemail message that the voicemail box is full, and can't leave a message. How does anyone do business like this? My experience was unpleasant here. I came in to pick up a watch I had left the previous day for a battery replacement. The owner/employee tells me that it doesn't seem to be the battery that's the problem and tells me he won't charge me. Then I ask him if he can find what's actually wrong with it and if he can fix it. I don't know if I phrased it in a way for him to misinterpret my question, but he glared at me and said "I've been working with this for 40 years, you think I don't know watches?". I visited Pendulum Faire to have an old pocket watch repaired. The shop is small and filled with glass display cases of watches. There were also various wall and grandfather clocks on display. Behind the counter various clocks and watches undergoing repair could be seen. The shop was small and tidy, and the glass display cases wiped clean. Immediately as I entered the shop I was surprised by how rude the proprietor of the shop was. He barely acknowledged me and rudely dismissed the watch I asked to be repaired. I am a collector of pocket watches and knew the Paul Buhre watch I wanted to have some simple repairs done to was not as high quality as an Elgin. However I was interested in having it repaired simply as a historical piece as Paul Buhre were the watch suppliers to the Russian czars. But the owner of the shop was not interested in hearing my explanation. This guy supposedly fixed my wife's watch. Her's is a high end Swiss watch. And yes she has owned it for many years, decades actually. In any case, the watched stopped running and I took it into Pendulum to replace the battery. However he said, no it needs much more than a battery. He ordered parts and fixed it. After 3 weeks and over $400 it was ready. Yes it worked but for only one month. It died again and we took it to another watch repair place in Santa Barbara, Posh. Who then charged me $170 because the watch was in "Pretty Bad Shape." How could it be in bad shape, we just had another guy repair and replace the bad parts? Who do I believe. When I told Pendulum about this, he scoffed and said Posh was lying. It turns out Posh had Fired this Pendulum Faire guy 20 years earlier and still holds animosity towards him. I took a wall clock in for repair that had sentimental value to me. A clock shop in the Bay Area had said it was not worth repairing. I found the Pendulum Faire Clock Shop just by accident when I joined Curves. The owner, Roman, took that clock and said he could repair it and his price was fair. He returned it to me cleaned up and working great. I thought it stopped working about a month after he fixed it so I took it back to Roman. He called a couple of days later to tell me it was ready for pickup. It turns out the it was my fault, it was not wound by me! Being my error and the time he took to look at it, I fully expected to pay him for his services. As it was he did not charge me at all. I was looking for someone to repair my cuckoo clock. I called in and told them just that, and the main replied, "Bring it in and we'll give you an estimate", without asking anything further. I replied that it wasn't the clock that was broke but the casing, and he did no he doesn't do that. I asked if he knew anyone local who does, and he said, "You need to look in yellow pages." Out of all the calls I've had to make to get things repair, I've never had anyone not ask any questions over the phone about the job, and I've never had anyone flatly tell me to look in the yellow pages when I ask for a recommendation. Maybe someday my cuckoo clock's clock part will break, but I'd have to actually be cuckoo to deal with this guy's rudeness then. read more

Today I picked up my second Sea Dweller Rolex I have had cleaned and serviced here. The cost $270. Rolex dealers want $750 minimum to open and clean a Rolex. I wear my watch everyday at work so it has some wear and tear. When I got it back it was so shinny I had to look twice. He said it could take 2-3 weeks because he was back logged but it only took 6 days. Both my Dad and brother have taken their Rolexs here too. Never a problem. I had an old gold watch, very important to me, for which batteries went from $20 to $70 to unavailable at any price over the past 10 years. My options were a new movement or retire the watch. But he found a battery that would work at a price of $10. Now regarding the rudeness that Scott R and Liza S encountered. The proprietor obviously speaks English as a second language and most likely comes from another culture. "Look in the Yellow Pages" is IMO an entirely appropriate way to direct when he has no reference to provide. These can be complex and very expensive, yet Roman makes it seem so easy and his prices are very reasonable. As for those comments regarding his customer service: realize that he's simply straight-forward and may limit his conversation to the facts of the situation. Unfortunately, this doesn't go over well with some particular people and they mistakenly take the rigidity as an insult. I had a terrific experience. A 1950's vintage Longines watch, which had suffered a cracked crystal, had stopped working, and in my attempts to re-start it I had lost the tiny second hand. He gave it a thorough cleaning, found a replacement second hand and crystal, and polished the watch until it looked new again, all for a very reasonable price.
