Most of the less than 5 star reviews listed here are accurate. The ambiance and amenities could definitely stand to improve enough to match the experience and service you'd expect staying at The Fairmont, the hotel within which this bar is colocated. I'm afraid that's not why I'm leaving a review. I'm leaving a review because I've never left a massage feeling less relaxed than when I arrived. It wasn't anything I could ask my provider to adjust, like pressure level, it was just very poorly executed, awkward, and uncomfortable. This was a $325 massage and I would hope the therapists are trained well enough to keep their nails from interfering with the therapy and send you home feeling better than when you arrived. This was my second time visiting and both occasions were similar. Different therapist each time. I'm also disappointed by the owner's responses on reviews here where accusations are made regarding the truthfulness of reported experiences. My sale ID from my receipt is 470227. Penelope is a mismatch for its location. I wish it weren't! What a great opportunity Penelope has here. I'm afraid they should let someone else with more experience operate the space and relocate to somewhere along Aurora where they don't need pesky things like certifications, training, credentials, and amenities. Edit: I received an email response where the business chose to double down on the same type of feedback they provide to others on Yelp. Very dismissive. When all you can do is point a customer to your website as if that resolves issues, I don't know how you continue to attract new customers. Dropped the rating from 2 stars down to 1 star for that reason. !!! 2ND UPDATE: Hoist by their own petard I suppose! They sent a multi-page email threatening me with "defamation, business disparagement, and tortious interference" if I did not take down my review. They scrutinized my booking history (debating whether this was my first or second visit, as my previous visit was booked under my partner's name) and even admitted to digging through my Yelp history to criticize my other reviews. Does this seem like a good response to negative feedback to you? There are other spas at hotels in downtown Seattle, I'll certainly be visiting one of those next time and I recommend you do the same if you don't want to be threatened with legal action if you don't enjoy your massage. read more

So disappointing! My masseuse was literally on his phone with one hand, forgetting to massage me with the other. It was a joke. I brought it up to him, he clearly put his phone away and proceeded with the rest of the lackluster massage. After the massage I went looking for a manager to tell--there was literally no one around. Dude. This was the weirdest, low-budget spa experience. I don't understand how this place has so many good reviews. The Fairmont is beautiful and incredible. This place...is not. I'm writing this review out of the kindness of my heart to warn other people to not go here. Listen, maybe you're on vacation in Seattle and are seeing things through rose-colored glasses. I live here. I am embarrassed that I just paid over $100 for a sad pedicure. You might be asking yourself, "why did this chick choose here to get a pedicure?". I wish I asked myself that. I am full of regret. I was hoping, bare minimum, for a relaxing experience. Instead, this woman is telling me what is wrong with my nails, how reactive my skin is and keeps telling me how sensitive I am. Not only is the ambience a zero on the vibe, this woman is SUCH. A. I have had several pedicures here. While I do like the waterless aspect and that you typically aren't rushed because you have a dedicated appointment, every time I've experienced Issues. One woman said that she had to take extra time on my cuticles and I should come in more often which is understandable but made me feel uncomfortable, then I switched and had someone but my appointment was delayed and there were impressions left so I had to go back in to get it fixed (complimentary) this last time was good but my pedicure only lasted 1week. For paying $135 for a pedicure I expect it to last longer, but I would say the pedicures are better than an average place and I don't have to worry about bacteria because everything comes in its own new package. Overall probably won't go again because it doesn't seem to be worth it. read more

A disappointing experience. As you walk in, you immediately get stares: is it b/c I didn't dress "rich" or that I have a different skin color? I brought a bag w/ a change of clothes. The website said they have lockers, but no one seem to bother to tell me where it was. The receptionist left me in the collagen bed and basically told me to find my way around the corner for the waiting/relaxation room. Honestly, of all spa places, this is the only place I've experienced such a blunt/almost rude instructions. The place looked expensive, but the service does not seem to be worth the $ or the value. Another red flag. I asked the receptionist if my appointment was 1 pm. I later found out through one of the staff members that it was scheduled at 1:30 pm. I rushed to the relaxation room for nothing after the collagen treatment was over. The massage therapist came and took me to the back of the nail salon instead of the one in the main spa area. That massage room was not only loud, but it also smelled of the chemicals coming from the nail salon. She said she's bothered by the candles/lighting, but that's odd coming from a massage therapist (why work here if you're bothered by the lighting/candles: isn't this what most spas define as "relaxation"?). I see all the other clients being escorted to the nicer massage rooms in the main spa. It just seems like a waste of my $167+$20 tip and 80 minutes of my time. She also said, it's been awhile since she's scheduled this room at the back of the nail salon: that made me question why she's assigned as my therapist and why I got placed in this back room behind the nail salon. As for the massage: I left w/ the same aches/pains (no knots removed). I asked for deep tissue/swedish massage, but she gave me nothing but light touches (light presses here and there). Of all the massage therapists I've worked w/ globally, she does not seem to be qualified or well trained. She also did not put enough lotion/oil until I've requested for it, so it was very painful w/ the friction/dryness of the skin. I've been coming to the Penelope & The Beauty Bar at the Fairmount, since my stylist, Tania moved here several years ago. I've been a client of Tania's for close to a decade now and I'm always happy with my cut. I have super thick hair and she knows how to properly my layer in the back, as well as face frame for a flattering cut. Trust me when I say I've been to many of stylists who don't know how to masterfully layer hair. I completely trust Tania with her expertise and knowledge. She also provides excellent lunch recommendations. The salon itself is very nice. I haven't tried any other services beyond a women's cut. The staff are always welcoming and I always look forward to visiting. It was fun to check out all the Christmas trees that were on display for the Seattle Festival of Trees. I found street parking a block away on a Sunday, which was also a game day. Not wanting to squander my parking karma, I went and had lunch nearby and did a little shopping after my cut. If you're looking for a relaxing, white-glove luxury experience for a massage or spa day, this is NOT the place. For the pricing, one should expect far better facilities and service. I have been to some of the nicest spas in the US and have even paid less for much better experiences. I can't believe what they're charging for what you get here. First, the spa desk was unmanned and completely empty when I arrived 15 min early as per the recommendation on my appointment confirmation email. A sign indicated you have to walk across the hall to a beauty salon to check in - which was also unstaffed for a few minutes until I was finally helped. At this point I was 7 minutes from the start of my appointment time and was beginning to worry about being able to get set up in time. I was escorted back to the "spa" and into the waiting area - which is less of a spa waiting room and more like a dark Victorian sitting room. The treatment rooms are right off of this waiting area, separated by sliding barn doors and a curtain (more on that later). Overall just a super weird vibe - the person who checked me in made me feel like I was an inconvenience, shoving a clipboard and some forms at me to be filled out prior to my appointment which was now slated to start in 3 minutes. I accepted at that point my treatment would not be beginning on time. There is no changing room to slip into a robe/slippers or allow you to wind down a bit before your treatment. Just sitting on a Victorian couch in a dark room in street clothes with strangers (this is co-ed, which isn't a huge deal as we're all in regular clothes and not in a locker room or anything, but still felt weirdly awkward). After about 15 minutes (10 min past my appointment start time now) I was retrieved by my massage therapist. I want to be clear that my practitioner was lovely from start to beginning - absolutely no complaints there. My issues lie with the facilities, ambiance, and environment. I was taken into a back treatment room and we went over my goals for the massage, problem areas I'd like to focus on, etc. When it was time to begin the session, my massage therapist left me to undress and get onto the table. Remember, no robes or changing rooms are provided, so one is left to undress in an extremely small treatment room the size of a closet. I folded up my clothes and left them on the chair by the door - no locker or wardrobe to hang anything. It felt more like getting undressed for the gynecologist than a "luxury" massage ($345!!!!). The massage was great, again no complaints there, other than it started late and ended on time. If I wanted a 60 min massage I would have booked that. After my treatment I was offered to lounge in the "relaxation area" (the weird dark Victorian living room) for as long as I like. It was not the atmosphere I wanted to be in after a nice long relaxing massage. I sat for a moment to order my car, went back down to the hair salon to check out, and bounced as soon as I could. This place really only gets away with the pricing because it's in a Fairmont hotel - but I believe it's independently owned/operated and has no affiliation with the hotel other than renting the space. It's a real shame. I've experienced more relaxation and better service at a massage chain in a strip mall. This "spa" should be charging prices much closer to an Elements or Massage Envy if they are providing that level of service. read more

I assume the positive reviews are for the hair salon - which looked nice. We were there for massages and treatments. This is NOT a spa. A spa has robes and lockers and a lovely waiting room - usually one for men one for women and one for both - ESPECIALLY at a nice hotel like Fairmont. This place has weird cramped tented "rooms". You change in the room like at your doctors office. The "waiting room" is indeed a weird old wicker couch. The pool access has small print around weekend use. My masseuse was a man (which was fine) and he wore GLOVES! It was the weirdest worst massage ever. I ordered deep tissue - there was none of the typical moving your arms around to find the hurting spots....just weird latex on skin poking. I expected so much more for the price and location. Got a Black Friday deal on an 80-min massage and added a facial...and then I read the reviews - whoops. I don't have anything original to say - it's in the nicest hotel in town but really falls short in every category. The rooms are tiny, compartmentalized and awkward to navigate, the massage was very, very mid. Though the practitioner was sweet. The staff seemed really un-cohesive and not friendly to one another. I was left waiting in a wicker chair for 30-40 min between my facial and massage and it was awkward to say the least. At one point a lady appeared out of no where and asked what I was waiting for. I was in the building from 2-6 and never once was offered water or anything so I'm glad I brought my own. The facial was nice - but pricey for what it was. I could have skipped out on paying as I went to the desk to pay and waited there for 10+ min for someone to check me out. There are better spots in the city that are much more affordable. read more

The staff was nice and helped me book a reservation. There is only street parking or a parking garage nearby(they validate it to reduce it to 10$, but forgot the garage name). The spa is inside the Fairmont hotel, the spa is gorgeous and chic! They greeted me and offered me wine/tea/water while I waited for my therapist. My massage therapist(Tara) was friendly and talked to me to know what I was looking for. I went for a therapeutic massage this time instead of my usual Swedish massage. While the massage was great, I would stick to my usual Swedish massage next time. Overall, my experience was great! Would recommend this place. read more

I've moved away but I went here for my Mani/Pedi because they have the Dazzle Dry system. I used to get acrylic dip which would last forever, but it would ruin my nail bed. You must request Quyen to do your Dazzle Dry manicure! She's the only technician who will make the Dazzle Dry polish last past 12 days. I've gotten this nail polish at high end hotel spas (as they usually carry this) across the country and my manicure always chips after just 3 days or even the next day with literally ANYONE else. Buy a Groupon. It will save you some money or you can ask them to price match. I also got a membership to take advantage of their discount member pricing before I knew about the Groupons. Their second tier membership (where you have to charge over $1,000) came with 12 Jade Pod sauna light sessions. I feel like the light is 100% not worth it even for free because they put a towel over the jade stones (probably for sanitary reasons) and a thick pillow which makes it so you can't close the lid of the device. The device ends up leaking hot air and you don't even end up getting the grounding effect of the jade on your skin. What is the point? I don't know who would pay full price for this thing. I've also gotten a $360+ facial at this spa and it's not worth it. They guilt you into a 20% tip so it ends up being like $450 for 1 hour! It was relaxing but I would rather honestly just get two $150 facials more frequently instead. I only recommend the Dazzle Dry mani/pedi with Quyen for chip free no damage nails. read more

Simply outstanding: from first phone call to make the reservation...to departure. It was a Saturday afternoon and my friend was in urgent need of a facial in anticipation of a very significant event taking place in a few days . I called around to 20 different locations in West Seattle and Seattle area, and none could offer to help until Charles was very helpful in arranging for myself and a girlfriend the services we sought. The waiting room was quiet and really comfortable and we were offered something to drink while we waited. Lisa was exceptionally skilled and my friend exclaimed, "I think I found my facialist for life." Her skin was glowing; her natural beauty was brought out even more (if that is possible) by her time under Lisa's magic touch. An added bonus is just the venue of the Fairmont is wonderful to wander through. It makes the whole occasion seem even more special. Solid 4.5 stars, and long overdue review! I love a good spa and have had a hard time finding a go to place in Seattle. Each year, I've wandered here to celebrate a special occasion, and I can say it's one of my favorites for a solo spa date! Ambiance: Draped in white with moody lighting, this place immediately has the feel of relaxation. The waiting area is a couch and some chairs, surrounded by small salon rooms. Service: Everyone was friendly, helpful, and welcoming! I love having a beverage to start things off. It's in the basement of a fabulous hotel, which means welcoming door service or valet as well as a gorgeous place to grab some lunch or a drink. I did waxing services (they have sugaring, which was less painful), 80 min massage with Mark (amazing), and 75 min facial with Amina (who really treated my face and chest, and gave a nice arm massage too!). I also tried the infrared sauna pod, which was confusing and I had to go find someone to help me; probably wouldn't do that again. I've previously done the waterless pedicure, which looked good, but I prefer a bubbling jet soak. There are a few things that would take it up to 5 stars. The facility is older than some of the neighboring 5-star hotel salons. A 2nd bathroom inside the spa would be nice. I also felt rushed between services. I had the worse massage experience on November 3, 2025, it was a 50 minutes massage. At the beginning we discussed the areas needed to be focused on which is my low back, shoulders and neck. And if there is time left she could work on other areas. However she spent very little time on those needed areas. To start, she had me laying on my back, and then she put her hands under my low back with no movement. I never experienced a massage with none moving hands like this. Was this some kind of healing power?? 5 minutes went by I thought I better say something otherwise I am losing my massage time. The whole experience was unplesasant. I arrived a little early, and there was no signage where to check in. I stood in the spa area for a bit before someone directed me to the salon. When I checked in, the gentleman at the front didn't say much, confirmed my name and muttered to himself, something of the services. Then he RUSHED me to the spa area -- he practically took the stairs two at a time. Ushered me into a closet that contains the Jade spa. Awkwardly told me just to undress to My comfort and "I guess you can use the robe since you're getting a massage". Robe was low quality and the slippers appeared to be one use because they were useless and practically cardboard. There were no lockers offered, no instructions given, or explanation of where/where anything was. I guessed that my belongings and clothes went in a paper gift bag that I had to carry with me. The ceiling of the room for the jade spa had dislodged ceiling tiles and was loud and warm. When my jade spa time ended, I had no idea where to go or where the waiting area for my next treatment was. I wandered for a bit before someone asked "uhhh can I help you?". The lounge they took me to was older, looked nicer in photos than it was. Cheap curtains covering things everywhere. Competing music from the hotel, the spa, and the treatment rooms, which lined the lounge. Treatment rooms were about the size of a closet and off the lounge. Then only thing dividing your treatment from the lounge was a weird barn door. Chair in the room was where I was supposed to pile all the stuff and put my robe - no hook or anything or anywhere for my gift bag of stuff. The massage table was comfortable and my therapist was skilled. However, he performed the entire treatment in medical gloves. No explanation. No heads up. Nothing. Just a weird glove noise every time he picked his hands up. When I was done, it just abruptly ended. And he said we're all set and he'll meet me outside. Again, I was left guessing what to do - so I fully dressed, left the empty gift bag on a chair. And the therapist asked if I wanted water, tea, or Prosecco. Given there was no amenities or anything and the awkward experience, I just wanted to get out of there fast. 1/10 do not recommend. read more
