Note that weekends are the busiest times, so be sure to make a reservation in advance, especially if you have a larger group. The whole process takes about an hour or so, depending on how fast/slow you go. Take your clipboard and sniff the single-scent candles on the wall - there are more than 100 to choose from, and some rotate seasonally! From there, an employee will review your selections and help you determine what scents blend well together. They recommend blending 2-4 fragrances, but 3 is ideal. They will bring you the oils for the respective scents, and you determine what combination you like. It's entirely customizable! My mom and I remarked it felt a bit like a science experiment, but way more fun than high school chemistry class. My mom made a candle with orange zest, verbena and lemongrass for a "meditation/tranquil" scent, and I opted for a holiday blend with peppermint bark, burnt sugar and myrrh, of all things. You mix the ratio of oils and pour it into the hot wax provided. After stirring, you then pour the candle wax into your vessel of choice. There are tons of options, ranging from 8 oz. glass jars to larger, three-wick tumblers. Prices range from $20 to $45. It takes two hours for the candle to set, so you can return same day or come back within 14 days to pick it up. They package it nicely in a gift bag for you. As if creating your very own candle wasn't enough, P&B has a beverage menu, so we enjoyed mimosas while making our candles. This would be the perfect experience for a girls' night, date night, Mother's Day, baby shower, bridal shower, bachelorette party - you name it! We went on a Sunday afternoon, and they were busy. While we had a reservation, it was not clear at first where we were supposed to sit and who was taking care of us. But Angie was a fabulous guide for our candle-making experience. RUINED MY NIGHT! So, some backstory, I love Penn & Beech. Have been a fan from the beginning. I follow them on social media. I go out of my way to drive over and purchase their seasonal candles. I've poured candles at the Mass Ave location before. I was sad that the Valentine's pink holder was for pour your own only and I didn't have time to get in that weekend so I called, and they said they'd pour one for me if I told them the scents. Anyway, we go back a long way. I've bought all my friends and family candles from here for Christmas before. I support local and I'm a fan. Continuing on...I had a friend visiting me last weekend from out of state. I planned a "Best of Carmel" night out and made a reservation for 7:30 last Saturday night. Of note, I've gone in without a reservation before and had no problems getting in, but I played it safe and made one. It was a Saturday night and it took me a couple minutes to find parking and I honestly wasn't rushing so we walked in at 7:46pm. When we checked in, the host said she wouldn't fulfill our reservation because we were 1 minute past the "grace period." I apologized. No dice. I said, "Well, it said it would take an hour-ish to pour so we'll hurry and be done in 40 minutes so you'll still be on time for the next people." She said, "No, we don't have the staff to do that anymore." So in one minute you sent home staff for the night?? I said, "Well, can you just take us as a walk-in?" Her: "No." I should have asked to talk to a manager or something, but I was so confused and frustrated and embarrassed. I didn't see anything about the 15-minute grace period on my confirmation text. They didn't call or anything to ask if I was on my way. And I get it, people need to run on time. But I offered to still spend the same amount of money in a shorter period of time and was denied the opportunity. And it was legit 1 minute past the grace period. I'm sorry I was late. But is there any room for some compassion and just be nice to a tired mom who was trying to plan something nice? So then I had nothing to do in Carmel until our next reservation because all the other stores close at 8pm. My friend was so disappointed. I felt terrible. The host was SO RUDE and condescending. The space wasn't even that busy and the supplies were already set out at the tables. It was the worst. So, lesson learned: Penn & Beech does not want my money. I was bringing some other mom friends here next month but will cancel now. I don't like being treated so rudely and it's left a very bad taste in my mouth for what used to be my favorite local candle spot. read more

Came here to celebrate my mom & aunt for their birthdays (they are twins). I had never been to this location but I liked the set up. Reserving was really easy. This was also my siblings first time and everyone enjoyed themselves. Only downfall is that my candle and it's scented oils while soft just didn't burn in the room well. I've been eyeing this place for months so when invited for a girls night, I was in! We had reservations for 6 pm for 6 people and they were ready for us. Instructions were given and the fun began. I really enjoyed the service and experience of making the candle--it was fun, and the staff made it a great activity. The price was fair for the experience, and I appreciated the variety of options. However, I was a bit disappointed that the candle I brought home doesn't have much of a scent when burning. For me, the fragrance is an important part of a candle, so that was a little upsetting. This was a fun experience, I'm always in search of soy candles but at Penn and Beech you make your own soy candle and even create your own scent! It can be a little overwhelming with all the smells so don't overthink your scent and when you find one you like write it down and keep going. They have wine you can order (a little expensive) but it makes the experience more complete. The people working are very nice and patient with you as you try create your scent which I appreciated. So after you find your scent you mix your oils and pour them into a vessel you picked. Then they pour the wax in and viola your candle is done, well it has to sit for 2 hours to set up but then after two hours your candle is done! I went to Penn & Beech candle company for the first time with some girlfriends. I poured my own candle, and it was a fun experience. When you first walk in, there is a shelf of candles that you can smell and you are given a sheet of paper where you can write down your favorite scents. The maximum amount of scents recommended is three. I wrote down a list of about six favorite scents. Our hostess (not sure what the correct term to be used) helped to make suggestions. I loved my combined scents and welcomed her scent suggestions. You can make reservations online for a specific pour time and it takes two hours to cure your candle. There are also a number of different candle holders to choose from as well. The particular candle I picked with a lid was $30. They do have a private room as well for private events. If you know of anyone who may have difficulties with higher up tables and chairs, you may want to reserve the private room or ask about sitting in the private area. We went to dinner and then walked back and grabbed our candles and it made for a fun evening! They will hold your candle I believe for up two weeks. Great service, fun evening! read more

Came here for an event and it was great! Staff was knowledgeable and there are TONS of scents to choose from. I loved being able to mix and match scents to make the perfect candle. My only complaint is the minimal options where it comes to the actual candle vessel. There were maybe 10 options, most of them being a basic glass with the Penn & Beech logo. I wish there were more colors and size options. I also with there was more variety of price points. The cheapest option only came in two colors, and I couldn't bring myself to pay the extra $15 for a vessel I liked more. You have the ability to pick up same day, but I opted to leave and come back later to get my candle. It came in a cute bag decorated nicely. I placed my candle on the bathroom counter (so it was on a wall), and the first burn went fine. Now, there is a layer of black soot not only along the vessel, but up the wall as well. This is not something I have experienced with any other candle, included self pour ones from other stores. I love candles and know a lot about candle care, so I believe this is a problem with this candle from the specifically. It smells so good, but not worth the soot. read more

Loved the ambience of this Penn & Beech location! We made a reservation for our work retreat outing to visit during the day on a weekday. All the staff were helpful, attentive and friendly throughout our visit, but also respectful to give our party time to talk and spend time independently. They had a very wide variety of scent choices to choose from, and all were available and in-stock when we visited. Members of our party also took advantage of their Buy 3 Get 1 Free candle sale that was going on! I wasn't aware that they had promotions like this going on, so it was a very pleasant surprise! I have visited the Mass Ave location in the past and felt it was just a little more crowded and cramped than the Carmel location (the downtown/Mass Ave location staff and experience was great, I'm just a little claustrophobic!). I was so excited for this visit. I got this candle making gift trip from my family for my birthday. I have never been to Penn and Beech before but am familiar with their candles that I have seen in the restrooms of many nice restaurants I have eaten at and I really enjoy the scents. We had a reservation for this trip and each table has their own associate to guide you through the process. You start by ordering a drink and then going to the scent sampling area where you pick about 10 of your favorites. When you get back to the table your assistant will guide you into narrowing your scents to about 3 that work together. Next step is to pick out the container you want. Then you start adding drops of your chosen 3 until you get the combination that you like. Your associate will then bring out the hot wax to combine with your oils. It takes about two hours for your candle to set up which is a good time to shop around the neighborhood and get a lunch. This was so much fun. Older children are able to participate also. My 8 year old granddaughter really enjoyed her afternoon. They also have a private room area where you could join a group of friends (up to 20) and have a candle making party. Went here to celebrate my bf's bday, he's creative and loves to make new things. Neither of us had been here, had reservations at 500pm and there was ample street parking in front along with several close parking garages. We got right to it and loved smelling all the candle scents, so many to choose from and lots of unique options; old books, cannabis, leather, campfire, fresh bread... We chose our favorites and got the oils to start planning our candle. The staff walked us through the process and ensured we had an idea of what went well together and how much oil to use. Our staff member was helpful but not intrusive. Our candles took two hours to cure and were ready after dinner. They are pricey but the experience was enjoyable and creating a signature scent was romantic. We ordered a mimosa and I would skip that in the future-too much orange juice, should have just order sparkling wine. Would have liked a cold glass of water but there is a fresh water available. It was fun to smell the wall of candles and fill out the clipboard of favs. The candle jars were a bit expensive but you're here for the experience more than anything. I enjoyed myself--my husband didn't care for it but that's just his personality . I will add the candle wicks don't burn down like retail candles. You need to keep them trimmed to avoid high flames. I've been twice and created 2 totally different candles, one including lemon grass, mint, and almond and the other scent was more a buttery bakery vibe. The explanation from staff on the process has always been helpful, I've enjoyed wine and a beer during my candle making too!
