Just finished up making a candle with my wife for our 5th anniversary. We have walked past this place for a while now and wanted to try it out. The massive wall of over 100 scents was a little intimidating, but it was a lot of fun to smell them all. I do wish they had some sort of smell palate cleanser tips posted. Some of the smells are pretty light. I recommend that you go toward some of the stronger scents so that they permeate the candle wax. My wife and I decided to share the candle making. Luckily we had similar scents on our list! We ended up making a hops, key lime, and grapefruit candle. A citrus IPA if you will. I am really pleased with how it turned out. This place would be fun in a large group with some beverages. Making one candle went pretty fast. Excited to concoct some other candles in the future. read more

One of my besties and I went to P&B last weekend and we walked in and it smelled amazing! Several scents to choose from and the customer service was great! We got to pour our own candles and they smelled better than we could have imagined! We chose the teal/dark green-ish glass vessels so after we poured it was a bit pricey for two people - $84 with tip. The candles are 8oz, I believe. There were bigger vessels, but the price climbed with each type and material. We got the second least expensive one at $32 per jar. Not terrible. Overall we had a really great time! read more

Perfect winter activity for adults. We went here for my birthday and it was a lot of fun. The staff was very upbeat and funny. They kept the energy going the whole time and played off of their audience. They have a limited beer and wine menu which made it an even better experience. You could easily make this experience last anywhere between 45-1.5 hours. We didn't not feel rushed at all. The actual candle process was quick, but if you stuck around and drank you could easily stay longer. All depends on what you are looking for. It was only my boyfriend and I and we stayed for almost an hour. The staff was a lot of fun and did help my boyfriend out on his candle since he was struggling with creating the right scent. I picked up my candles that next week and I'm happy with my creation! Note: I love bath & bodyworks, but I get headaches when I'm inside the store. It is a super fun experience to sniff all the scents and pick the blend for the day and pour your own candle. Penn & Beech is a really cool concept- it is so fun to be able to create a custom candle scent from all the options available. You start by choosing your top scents from the candle wall- there are probably over 100 options to choose from! Then you choose whichever candle holder you want to use for your creation. Your price is based on the size and type of container you pick. You then get seated and the associates help you pick some potential options that may go well together based on your selections. They will let you test again as many flavor combos as you want so you don't feel rushed or pressured to choose your final combination. You then get to add the scents in your preferred ratio, mix with wax, and ta-da, you have your own custom candle. Also it's fun they let you create a fun name for your candle as well! You have to let the candle sit for 2 hours before you can take it home but you can come back anytime within the next 2 weeks for pickup. I've been here twice and my 2nd experience was not as great- we were seated after choosing our scents and candle holders and waited almost 10 minutes before I finally asked what we had to do next- apparently no one was assigned to us so we were just sitting there awkwardly waiting. Once I asked, we were helped immediately and our helper was so kind- I wish I remembered her name! Also- when I flipped my candle over to read my name on the bottom of my 2nd candle, my candle fell out! I'm not sure what went wrong but it seems to be too lose for the holder. Only other con is I do think for just a candle the price is a little high. However, part of what you are paying for is the experience. They also sell beer, wine, and some non-alcoholic beverages (limited menu) and do not allow outside drinks. read more

A group of 3 friends and I went to celebrate my birthday last night and holy cow, this was a blast from start to finish. The concept is fabulously fun: pick a glass container to house your final creation, sniff a bunch of pre-made candle scents, play chemist while mixing your custom scent blend, and have the fabulous staff help you craft your own custom candle. Since I'm a stickler for hygiene, I loved that they require all customers to immediately wash their hands before commencing with their sniffing! Masks are required if you're not sitting at your table and hand sanitizer is available at each socially-distanced table. Staff members are all wearing masks too, which makes you feel extra secure. Once I we went around finding our favorite scents, a staff member looked at each of our boards, helping guide our final selections to ensure we were creating a candle that wouldn't be overpowering or unpleasant. They then bring over squeeze bottles with the scented oils inside; you continue your olfactory adventure by squeezing two bottles together to ensure you like how they blend together. As is all this wasn't fun enough, you then get to combine your own ratios of the scented oils into a little jigger, stirring and sniffing until you've perfected your blend and filled the jigger. An employee will then bring over a measuring cup full of their non-toxic wax and you dump your scent concoction into the wax and pour it into its final vessel: the beautiful glass container you picked previously! It takes 2hrs to cure your yummy creation, so heading to dinner or picking it up the next day is what you should plan on doing. We made a reservation online because sometimes walk-ins can be a very long wait. especially on a weekend. Even with a reservation we weren't exactly following the schedule. First thing I noticed was the smell, it smelled AMAZING. And second was the noise, it was veryyyyy loud with a full house and the echoing through the room. Very popular place to be I learned. The employees were extremely nice and helpful. They basically do all the work for you aside from choosing your scents and stirring and pouring the oils in the candle wax. You get to choose your own vessel and they are reusable! So once your candle burns out, you can bring your vessel back and create a new candle for a discounted price. Choosing scents was extremely hard considering there were over 100 oils to choose from. I went in without much expectation and really surprised myself with the options I chose. But it seriously smells incredible. It was a lot of fun and I love my scent so much. At the end you can name your candle to add even more personalization. After you pour, you can come back within 14 days to pick up. Pretty fun experience that I'd love to do again! read more

I have a cabinet with probably 15 candles from this place in my kitchen and I absolutely love that I've been able to handcraft so many scents that I've fallen in love with. if you're looking for a good date night or company outing, don't look any further this is the perfect spot! I had a super fun experience here! I had been looking for a unique date idea so I scheduled a candle making session here. We were given a clipboard and told to choose a few of our favorite scents. They had dozens upon dozens of scented candles to sniff, with containers of coffee beans strategically placed around to cleanse our senses. The scents ranged from floral and fruity to more eclectic options (like books, rain, sea foam, bacon). After choosing the scents we liked, we chose a vessel. I opted for a 16oz holographic candle vessel ($35) and my partner chose a reed diffuser ($28). We took a seat at a table and an employee was very helpful in choosing great combinations for scents based on our choices. While they prepared our materials, we also got to enjoy mimosas! The employee personally walked us through each step of the candle making process and made it easy to follow along. All of the staff were wonderful and considerate, even when we spilled and broke things! The reed diffuser was ready to go right when we finished, and we picked up my candle the next day. While it was a little pricey, I did find the experience really fun and different from a lot of the activities offered in the area. Plus, they offer reasonably priced refills of our vessels with any scent we please! I think it was a great investment of my money and I would love to take more people here! read more

Who would have thought candle making could be such an awesome experience! I've heard great recommendations about this place and had to give it a try. A few friends and I visited the Carmel location and we were wowed by the looks of the place right away! After taking in the beautiful space, we were greeted by the sweetest employee, Melissa, and she walked us through the entire experience. We began at the scent wall, experimenting with our senses and selecting our top scents! I'm not kidding, this wall has every scent imaginable from old books to olive blossom. Next was a pit stop at their wall of jars, ranging from $20-50. After making our selections, we got down to business with Melissa picking out our favorite scent combinations. Again, I can't say enough how great the customer service was - one of my friends even commented that she felt taken care of the entire time. Melissa understood the vibes we were going for and gave great recommendations! I went with a vanilla bean and teakwood candle, and the remainder of our time was spent blending the oils and sipping cider (or wine, coffee, mimosas... the list goes on)! By the end we were pouring our final products and couldn't wait to pick them up! I loved my experience at Penn & Beach and would 10/10 recommend this spot for a group of friends, a date, or a work outing. If your nose could get turned on - this would be the place to go. The moment you walk you, your sense of smell is like overwhelmed af with so many different scents. You do adjust the longer you say in there though. First thing you do - smell all of the scents. They have you write down all of the ones you like and star your absolute favorite. Once you find those scents you like & love, you pick out what jar you want your candle to be in. Various sizes, quality, and $. From about $20-$45 from what I saw. Not bad for also paying for the experience along w it. Wine is about $9 a glass! We made a reservation and were sat @ a table. Then a worker comes over and helps you narrow down your favorite 4 scents. They bring the oils over to you and you basically snort these scents untill you find the perfect combination. Once you've decided - then you start to make your personalized scent! You put oils into that little thing that looks like shot glass and you stir occasionally and smell the end of the stir! When you like the scent you have, then you put in an even amount of each one until you reach the very top! Then you pour into the hot water and you stir stir stir!!! HERE IS THE KICKER - once you have done that you are done untill the candle is ready. Takes about an hour and a half for them to be done. So if you go later in the night make sure you can go back within 2 weeks to pick it back up! Overall amazing experience and my candle smells perfect! I did a pre Mothers Day outing with my mom and grandma at Penn & Beech. I really had no clue where it was, and really found midtown neat. We had a blast, because my mom is simply a funny person. I found the staff not very friendly and almost rude. We really just read the directions and picked our scents. There was no real directions other than the ones posted. Another group came in and the staff was right there with them walking them through each step. Once we picked our flavors staff came over and assisted... again not really explaining stuff or that some smells scents were stronger than others so it took awhile for us to balance. TL;DR: Pros: Super fun to try, good atmosphere, good girls night, great scents, really cute candle holders Cons: Price, Candles don't last long For Christmas last year, I gifted my friends $30 gift cards to come to Penn & Beech together as a way to spend more time together with an "experience" gift rather than items/knickknacks we would normally exchange. We picked a weekend, made a reservation and went in with medium-high expectations. We didn't think it would be an amazing thing to do together, but we thought it would be a nice little activity -- everyone likes candles, so why not. We were so wrong -- we had SO much more fun than we had anticipated. We loved smelling all of the scents on the scent wall, laughed as we asked each other to hold a 3rd scent for us so we could smell 3 at a time. The person helping us was so much fun to work with and it definitely didn't hurt that you could buy drinks too. At the end, we decided that we would come back again and we'd bring more people. I should note, the candle itself doesn't burn very long, and it almost set my coffee table on fire. When the wax got low, it started melting my table and now I have half of the Penn & Beech logo forever on my tabletop. Cue to the summer - we do come back, and this time there are 5 of us. We take advantage of the buy 3, get 1 free deal, along with bringing in previous vessels to refill. We have just as much fun as we did the first time, even though we didn't get a table and were instead sitting at the bar area, so the people on the ends couldn't really talk to one another. We again decide that it's so much fun to make candles together, and we love that we save money by refilling our empty candle holders. The candles don't last long, but they do smell good and the experience is worth it in the end. Fast forward to last weekend -- the original 3 of us come back as part of another Christmas celebration, and we bring in 3 empty vessels to fill and get 1 more new one to fill up to take advantage of the buy 3 get 1 free sale. This is when I get sad, my friends: They've changed their pricing policy since the last time we were in and to refill 3 candles and buy 1 small new one, it was $120 total. That's $30/candle for just wax/oil in 3 of them. I've officially been priced out of Penn & Beech. I recommend it as an experience/thing to try if you haven't done it! But my friends and I agreed that it's no longer going to be in the rotation of things to do whenever we're all in town together. read more

Really disappointing experience. I have purchased numerous Penn & Beech candles, have made multiple candles at their various locations and always considered them a "go-to" for special celebrations. However, that has come to an end. We were scheduled to make candles in celebration for my sister's birthday. My grandmother and I drove two hours away for this candle making experience. Roads were slick, the temperature was 2 degrees out and we were EXACTLY 18 minutes late for the appointment we had scheduled (they have a 15 minute grace period). We informed the host that we understood we were late and were willing to cut our experience short due to our lateness. The staff could not have been more rude, snobby, or unaccommodating. Especially, considering the weather conditions, the fact we drove two hours away and that we were celebrating a birthday. They would not allow our entire group to participate in the candle making, so we ended up leaving, our group was so disappointed, and they could not have cared less. read more
