This was the longest wait I have ever spent in a licensing center in my life. I lived in several states and never had an experience like this. 5 hour wait for a 5 min visit. Unbelievable! This place is terrible. Don't waste your time here, drive out of your way and go to Lancaster. Horribly understaffed and half the people who work here are so rude. Waited 3 hours and came at an off time. Employees don't assist you with what you need, and are not helpful at all. read more

With Covid safety measures still in effect with businesses like this, and the urge of online usage, it sure helps out people like me that have to appear in person for CDL renewal. This is the only time that I have ever been to a PennDOT station that I didn't have to wait more than 20 minutes. I had to do license renewal, address change and real ID. I was out in 20 minutes. It might've helped that I was there on Thursday right after lunch. But I only have to go once every four years so I don't have much to compare it to. I think, that being less stressed by the amount of people they usually have, the staff seemed a lot more friendly. I am so ready for this Covid crap to be over but I'm almost wish it would stay this way. Lol read more

Penndot Driver License Center - Departments of Motor Vehicles Near Me - York, Pennsylvania

Brought my teenaged son here to get his learner's permit. We arrived 30 minutes before opening on Saturday morning and the line was already all the way down the strip mall front, socially distanced. There was an employee outside the door checking people in, getting their documents together and generally facilitating a quick processing of everyone in the line. She was friendly, easy to understand and generally awesome. Because of Covid, I was not allowed to enter the building with my son, so I was a little worried that things would not go smoothly and with trepidation, I went to wait in my car. 20 minutes later he returned having taken (and passed!) his exam, holding his permit and my credit card. It was a good experience overall and I appreciate the professionalism and organization of this PennDOT office. read more

Waited for over three hours to be told they don't take credit card. They have signs about not accepting cash but nothing about not accepting credit cards. It's 2019, who carries a checkbook around with them. Horribly understaffed. At least 100 people waiting. Only 2 counters staffed out of at least 5. read more

I was a little concerned that they don't offer appointments and that as a walk-in that I would have to wait forever. Alas, that was not the case. I was seen within 5 minutes and out the door in less than 20 mins with a temporary drivers license. Just remember that they take checks, money orders, or credit card, but not cash! read more

Visited PennDot on Queen Street this morning to get my picture taken. VAST improvements have been made since my last visit March 2015. A real person greets you at the door, provides you with a ticket number and then you are directed to one side of the floor or the other based on your reason for being there. The self-serve kiosk is GONE. There are more bodies in the office with knowledge so the time at a window is greatly reduced. I was in and out in 30 minutes! That was unheard of in 2015. Also, the technology has been upgraded which is probably another reason why it works like a well-oiled machine. NO CASH. NO CREDIT CARDS. ONLY CHECKS. read more

Recently went to Penn Dot first the very first time. Compared to MVA in Essex, MD it wasn't terrible, but that's not saying much! THE GOOD... -easy to park and find -relatively small office -things went pretty quick for the most part -was able to register to vote too THE BAD... -website said the cost for out-of-state was 29.50, yet when I got there I was told $30.50...not a huge deal except for the fact they do not accept cash or out-of-state checks! Had to walk over a few stores to get another set of money orders. Guy behind the counter acted like I should have known this. -processes and procedures are very archaic in this day in age -employee who helped initiate new driver's license process could have been more friendly and welcoming...came across grouchy -was given temporary driver's license and was told official will be mailed...why?? Overall, these places need some serious overhauling to processes, procedures and staffing. They really need to step into the 21st century already. Unfortunately, there's no avoiding places like this when you need a new license, but if you can, get everything else done online! read more

I have considered writing this for a long time. It seems silly to write it now that I've had my license for 4 years but maybe I can save some teenage girl the heartache. DO NOT GO HERE. I went here for my drivers test. I came in, the wait wasn't too long. When it was our turn to pay, a woman called us up- I don't remember her name but she had medium length brown hair. Everything was going well but she was very hard to understand. The DMV was loud and she was talking so quietly, I couldn't hear anything she was saying. She was only making small talk though so I decided it was easiest to smile, nod, and occasionally say "yea". Well, I guess she didn't like that, she told me I was incredibly disrespectful for saying "yea" and that a 17 year old should be answering adults with the word "yes" or "yes ma'am". I'm not one to be disrespectful so if that what makes her happy then whatever. Then, she began to criticize my clothing. She told me my jeans were disgusting because (like many teenagers) they had intentional rips and tears in them. When her and I were walking out of the DMV she threw a fit because she didn't like where I parked. I was driving my dads car and he's crazy about his car and always parks in the back to help prevent any doors hitting his car. So she said "the back row of spots isn't the DMV parking lot, I should fail you for that"..so, if the back row of spots IN FRONT of the DMV aren't for the DMV then what is it for...? Before she got in, she stood outside my car and told me things like "put on your high beams, turn off the lights, windshield wipers, etc. she then asked me to turn on my defrost. that was bad on my part cause I didn't know where it was in this particular car. When I admitted I didn't know, she yelled at me and told me it was an automatic fail, but she got in the car anyway. We went to the parallel parking spot, my car was completely in the lines but she said "it's not close enough to the curb. So I said okay, pulled out and went to retry. Before I could even pull out of the spot, she yelled so loud "dead, you would be dead. If you pull out like that you're going to get crushed by a 18 wheel truck and be smushed flat" proceeded to go into depth about the gruesome way I would be killed. She told me I failed parallel parking, so I assume the test is over, but no she tells me to keep going. We pull up to a stop sign which I stop at. I could not for the life of me see past the large trees on the driver side so I inch foreword. Cars are behind me now, and she says "STOP THIS CAR" so I stop, this woman gets out of the car, holding up traffic behind me, makes ME get out of the car and says "you cannot pass the stop sign". Get back in the car, make the left hand turn without even being able to see if a car was coming, and make our way to a development. When I turned into the development I was going 25 because I was making a turn, and would gradually increase to the speed limit 35. The second I made the turn she yelled at me for not going fast enough, as if she wanted me to not even slow down for the turn. Sped up the car, she said I did that wrong as well because I didn't ease into it. She made me fiddle with the radio while I was driving. she said "turn on the radio" so I did. And again, she yelled and told me I'd be dead for turning it on. She continued to criticize every single part of the test which I get it's her job, but come on, I'm sure you don't need to go into depth about my death and I'm sure screaming while I'm trying to focus isn't necessary. By the time my test was over, I was crying. We walked in and she handed me my slip and said "what does that say?". She had marked down that I passed, which took me by surprised because I thought I had failed. So I said "I passed?" More as a question than confident answer. And she proceeded to tell me that she couldn't believe she was going to let someone like me drive on the road, made me feel as though I'm not smart enough to operate a vehicle. My dad came up to me and asked how I did. I cried harder and told him I have no idea. So we had to go find someone else in the building, and I gave her my slip. She was so nice. "Congratulations! You passed!" She said but I still couldn't stop crying. She directed me to the photo part and they took my picture. my hair was poofing out cause of the high amount of stress I had been under, I was sweating. And you know, I can't help but blame her for my garbage license photo that I'm now stuck with because covid doesn't allow photo retakes. To this day, I cannot go places where I need to parallel park and I cannot drive on highways or any busy road because of the extreme anxiety I now have because of that woman. Parents, don't take your teenage girls here for their license, most of us can't take a stranger telling us horrible things about the way we dress and calling us names, we're very emotional. I'm not one to wish the worst for people but I really hope that woman is fired. read more

Went there on Friday morning ,which probably my first mistake. Got there at 9;20 am. At first the numbers were moving right along, until one of the employees announced that the system was down and someone from Harrisburg was on their way down in about an hour . Then after about 20 or so minutes , it appeared the system had started working again, but that was not true. It was back down. After being at the DWV for almost 2 hours , I left. I definitely have better things to do then sit there all day . The problem is , the system breaks down ALOT, I have found that out from my friends that I have talked to . This is crazy!! read more

Worst place ever !!! Huge wait times and angry staff.

I am giving one star not because of poor service, but because this system and the amount of documents required is completely out of date and there should be a better system in place in order to simply switch to a new driver's license in a new state. If you happen to not have ONE of the documents, there is no exception. Even if you've already waited for an hour. They update their prices, and don't reflect them on their website. So basically we were a dollar short and had to get a MONEY ORDER because they won't accept debit payment or an out of system check from a new resident. This process could be stream lined for more efficency. read more

We just got back from taking a driver's license test from the York DMV. Fabulous job everyone. Workers were very professional. Driver "test-er" was a sweetheart. I grew up in Red Lion and decided to bring my son to York for his test as Lancaster is both too busy to get an appointment less than a month out, and because the DL Tester we had in Lancaster last week was over an hour late for Monday's special hours driver's tests and then failed everyone (at least everyone in front of us...including us) for what we have since learned are not errors. Guessing he did not like having to work on a Monday which is supposed to be his day off? Highly recommend you go to York for best service. read more

I went to take my third driver's licensing examination at the York DL Center, after two failed attempts at my nearby Lancaster DL Center. My examiner was very professional, an important quality that's missing at the Lancaster DL Center. However, I couldn't attempt my exam due to a faulty headlight on the right-hand side of my vehicle. At least, my examiner was decent enough to offer to let me come back before 2:00, to get it corrected. The only factor that I disliked was that there was no definite start location, as you started by pulling back from a regular parking space. Other than that, I prefer coming to York instead of Lancaster. read more
