First time visiting Penn's Tavern! The building is beautiful, our service was superb and the food was outstanding! Loved the entire visit!

Yesterday was my 3rd time visiting Penns Tavern within the last 6 months. First time dining inside & also first time dining during the week. My party had a reservation for 6:30pm. We ordered an appetizer by 6:45, and main meals by 7 at the LATEST. Almost an hour & a half later our food arrived. A Cuban sandwich, a French dip sandwich, and a pretzel appetizer were the items that I remember our party of 4 ordering. Our waitress was friendly & had a sense of humor, however, before we got our food, a group of gentleman walked by, she happened to be at our table checking up on us, at this point she told us "sorry for your wait, those guys hate waiting for their food." I was in AWE of this statement. Every single guest at this establishment is here to eat & would prefer to not wait an hour & a half. We are all paying customers, guests should be served as they arrived and/or as tickets are sent to the kitchen. We ate our dinner at 8:30pm & upon exiting by 8:50pm the ENTIRE front dining room was EMPTY - I couldn't understand the timing issues not to mention the priority of certain paying customers over another. Although our waitress was polite & very happy and apologetic (our party knew the timing was not her fault), I don't plan on visiting this establishment again in the near future. read more

This place has allll the vibes. We went on a Saturday around 5 without a reservation and ended up getting the last available table on the deck, so I would recommend a reservation if you want to sit outside on a weekend. We drove out of the way to check out this place and it was worth it. The view of the sun setting over the river was priceless. The signature Mule was tasty and presented in a beautiful copper mug. The waitress was attentative but it did take about an hour to be served our entrees. Not a problem for us as we were enjoying our appetizer, salad, rolls and drinks while soaking up the sunset. The food is great and the ambience is even better! Our bill was about $67 for two people. We ordered two pasta dishes, one appetizer, one iced tea and one mule. read more

This was our first time at this restaurant. I thought it was amazing. The seafood chowder was to die for. I had the fish and chips and it ranks in the top 3 that I've ever had. My wife had the fish Ruben. She loved it. I will definitely be going back. I have to say something about the service. The waitress was wonderful. Very attentive and personable. Can't wait to go there over the summer and sit out on the deck and enjoy a few of there delicious micro brews. Very good job!! Keep up the good work.. read more

The decor, setting and service were great. The German food however was not. We both had the Jaeger Schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzel. While the portion was generous the flavor was over powered with herb seasoning. Both the Schnitzel breading and the interesting Spaetzels needed half of whatever they used. The meat flavor should stand out but in this case an hour after leaving I was burping the seasoning! The mushroom gravy had no hint of mushrooms in flavor or presence. All in all I was disappointed that we drove out of our way. read more

The atmosphere is warm and friendly smiles greet you at the door. The bar was a comfortable spot to relax, have a drink, and take in a game. This would be a nice environment for a date night. The menu offered plenty of different varieties of food from burgers, chicken, fish, and steak. The price point was also reasonable. The restaurant gets very busy on Saturday. So come early or make reservations. I can see adding this spot to my hangout list in the summer time. read more

Wow! We were so surprised to find such a delicious place in Sunbury with such a rich history. I got the Shrimp Po'Boy with fries and it was absolutely perfect - flavorful and crispy, just the way I like it. We look forward to coming back soon. read more

Excellent food and service! We had a wonderful midweek lunch. We found it on Yelp while antiquing. Out server was Tammy and she was warm and funny. She recommended great starters. I chose the Cobb salad which was super fresh with blackened shrimp. I LOVED the salad! The dressing are homemade, which I loved. My husband had the creole burger which was really good. We were so happy that we made the stop. The building is from the 1700's and decorated very tastefully. We will definitely be back. read more

Inconsistent. The soup was just warm, but the salads were fresh and the dressing home made. The duck was quite good but the Schweinrucken was dry. The draft Warsteiner a great surprise, but the brotchen (rolls) were disappointing. read more

Terrible, terrible service. We made a reservation for 6:30 PM, were seated right away, but no one even took our drink order until 7:00 PM. It would've been even longer, but we motioned toward a staff member who saw us but didn't come talk to us. Then the hostess was sent out to act as our waitress. We then waited an hour and a half for our food. We probably wouldn't have gotten our appetizer unless we asked about it. We were never offered free drinks or apps while waiting. When our bill came there was no compensation for the poor service. We told our waitress we were very dissatisfied and wanted to speak to a manager. She came back and our bill has been discounted 50%. We appreciated the discount but would've liked a an explanation from the manager as well. But after waiting an hour an half for our food we weren't going to wait around for the manager ... but thank you to Lindsey our hostess/waitress. Absolutely great experience!!! The food was delicious! Had their crab cake sandwich, little filler, lots of crab, one of the best I have ever had! I had the chocolate martini and my husband had the cherry smash bourbon, both were delicious and not weak, haha! Service was great, the waitress was extremely kind and friendly. We had never been down this way before, as I just would have never thought there could be much of anything this far down the river. Besides, we heard things a few years ago that this restaurant wasn't that good. More recently, we started to hear some chirping from friends that they were under new ownership, and that the food was really good. And, they were right!!!! We visited Penn's Tavern for the first time this past Friday. We pulled up to a quaint, stone house, with a large parking area along the railroad, and a nice back yard area with a porch. We were pleasantly greeted by a couple of staff, and brought to the back area as they had the front area reserved for a large party. The vibe is very nice... very old, rustic, colonial-era feeling. The beer selections were pretty good, with several local brews all on tap (I appreciate they were interested in supporting their local community over the big beer manufacturers, as we fortunately have many great local breweries to choose from.) There were numerous appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and platters to choose from. I decided to stick with a traditional make-your-own burger with fries, and my wife had the french dip with extra horseradish. We also had an appetizer -- the crab pretzel. Both dishes were excellent, as was the appetizer. The burger was perhaps the best tasting burger I've had in years! And the fries were amazing! Fresh cut, and seasoned with a bit of salt and pepper. Perfect! We are both looking forward to going back again very soon. The only thing we regretted by the end was eating too much because it was so good! Be warned that the dishes are pretty big, and so if you definitely want dessert, be prepared to take some food home, or arrive hungry and forego the appetizer. Serious kudos to the new owners. I was so looking forward to our reservations at Penns Tavern this weekend. I ordered the brisket special which came with a salad and baked beans. My ranch dressing tasted like mayonnaise. The brisket, however, was delicious. My husband ordered the Wiener schnitzel. He very much enjoyed the pickled cabbage, however, the Wiener schnitzel itself was overpowered with so much sage you couldn't taste anything else. I was so disappointed in the food. The authentic German beer is amazing though! I would recommend for a beer and good atmosphere, but not for dinner. read more

Our daughter's Rehearsal Dinner was held at Penn's Tavern. The buffet was beautifully presented and the food is something to experience. The rustic atmosphere and authentic German menu is very unique to this area. Patty is a wonderful hostess. We also brought some of our clients to Penn's Tavern for dinner. A violinist played music at our table and greeted us. Food was wonderful. read more

I love this place. Great beer and great food. Some of the best crab cakes around.

Please note that reviews older than 2016 are a different owner. We finally got in to try this and even though it was a weeknight they were full with reservations, so we ate at the bar. My husband had a crab cake sandwich, and I had the flat iron steak with jack Daniels glaze. Absolutely delicious! We will definitely be back. It was nice to see that they are getting people in every night, and even though this is Tom and Liz Mertz first restaurant, they are right there chipping in with the staff. More like a 3.5 but I'll up to 4 just for the view! I cam in from Baltimore to visit a friend an he was excited to take me here. The view and atmosphere on the deck is amazing as well as the first impressions from the parking lot! Love the bar just when you walk in -- no televisions - just good old fashioned conversation. Enjoy the back bar for the view and the game. The private dining room (PDR) looks perfect for small gatherings maybe up to 25. Fireplace and three hundred year old floor boards make the room with the exposed stone! Our server was super friendly and pleasant. The sunset was fab! Now - the bad part of both our main courses -- the Wiener Schnitzel and Jaeger Schnitzel. Both were WAY over seasoned which almost killed the entire flavor. We both ate them...but it just wasn't too good. The potatoes and the red cabbage however were great! The beers were cold and unique choices, too! Overall a great experience and even though I know from my friend that German fare has been on the menu for awhile they should stick to American fare rather than trying to be a German restaurant in disguise. read more

Food was absolutely delicious and the service was fantastic. What was very disappointing was the music was way too loud for the room. We had 8 in our party and had to yell to hear one another. The tab with tip was $325 and we'd pay it again if the music was played at an appropriate level. This is our third visit and each visit was the same...great food, great beer, music too loud. read more

My wife and I stopped here after spending the day at the Ned Smith Festival. I had read that they served German cuisine. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel and the spätzle. What a disapointment! I make my own spätzle so I know what it looks like. I also have spent a week in Bavaria ordering Schnitzel and spätzle. What Penns tavern served was a very poor imatation. The Jägerschnitzel was dry, thick and tough. The mushroom sauce was a thick, lumpy, gelatinous blob, served on the side!! I did see something that looked like a mushroom. Spätzle is NOT a dry, crusty, brown, lump of dough. Someone needs to teach these people how to cook German food. Order the ribeye or the bar food...not the German entrees. read more

Excellent food. I grew up eating my mom's German cooking and this takes me back to many of her dishes. Pretty authentic and the closest thing I have found to her cooking. Place is pricey but it's worth every penny. Kind of out in the country and away from everything which ads to the experience. read more

We dined here as a table of four, every one enjoyed their meals. You can get a burger (huge) and they have one topped with alligator meat, that our friend enjoyed immensely or go for something a little more high-end. I had sauerbraten (the beef is locally sourced). Delish! With the best sweet potatoes with lemon grass. My husband had a bison burger, which was prepared perfectly. It is still there and open, was just there over the weekend. I am not a steak person and still tried it while there and it was excellent. There were 6 of us and usually all the guys never take home leftovers well they did that night, they don't go small on their food. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. read more
