We have always been lovers of Red Lion. However, we went there last night and we were so disappointed. Most of the sides are now "premium" sides, which means an upcharge for items like French fries or a salad which, seems to me should be part of a dinner when you are already paying a decent price for a dinner. The salad consisted of a few pieces of wilted spring mix, two pieces of red onion, and two small tomatoes that were past their prime (all for an upcharge). My husbands fish looked like a children's portion. And the macaroni and cheese was literally two tablespoons. We got a pizza to go, which on the menu looks like $4.50 for all three toppings, but, when the bill came it was$13.50, making the pizza $35.00!!! Crazy!!! once you get used to the level of gourmet and flavor in the food at Red Lion - a regular diner may save you a few bucks but you will truly miss the Red Lion food. there is a huge difference in taste, texture, etc. I would much rather spend the few extra bucks and go with Red Lion. its that good. I cook and make cheesecake. their cheesecake is so good id rather buy it than make my own. saved me the trouble and its old fashioned delicious not the kind you find at most places who dont know how to make real cheesecake and its so soft it falls over on the plate mush. the pastrami sandwich only place I could find even comes close are very famous restaurants in Manhattan. burgers are delicious especially on the cinnamon bun. cakes are pretty good nice and moist. home made not dried out like so many places. ribs are great. the chocolate pancakes at breakfast are the best ever. even their oatmeal with sugar honey and cinnamon is sooo good. Haven't had 'Cream Puffs" in several years. They used to be great; I stress used to be. Needed a saw to cut the shell and filling tasted like it had been stored with other meats and veggies. I ate at the Red Lion while visiting Pine Grove on a business trip. It was snowing quite heavily the day I visited and they were serving a limited menu because all the waitresses called off. The husband and wife who operate the restaurant were super friendly and took good care of me and my lunch companion. Great service. I ordered a side salad and a personal size taco pizza. The pizza was the perfect size and chock full of delicious toppings, cooked to perfection and served with a smile. I could definitely go for another one when I return to PA. Well that burger in the pic on the left when you put this restaurant into yelp; on the cinnamon bun.which might sound weird is so (#$* #$. good. It is the best burger i ever had anywhere. delicious tasting burger nice and soft but not too soft. got it med well. that is a million dollar burger. I eat burgers everywhere and this one beats anyone ive had ever anywhere including nyc area. and especially locally. I also love their oatmeal and chocolate pancakes. the pizzas are really good too. the sauce is great. I cant not understand why its not rated 5 stars by more people. the owners and staff are super friendly. I haven't had anything stellar from here but their food is quite nice and they have a pretty varied menu selection. I'd say my favorite item from here so far is the salmon patties. The buffalo chicken wrap is good but a little small and comes with no sides unless you pay extra. The haddock was nicely cooked cooked and a decent sized portion, it comes with 2 sides as do a majority of their entrees. My only complaint so far is the pretzel and cheese. I misread it the first time and thought it said beer cheese. That was on me but I said beer cheese to the waitress and she didn't bother to correct me that it was beer mustard until after I had gotten the food. So now I've got this item with not the dipping sauce I wanted because she didn't speak up, and their beer cheese tastes like really really sweet honey mustard. read more

Not sure what happened to the Red Lion Cafe over the years of ownerships but aside from it looking relatively the same except for a few cosmetic upgrades on the interior nothing much is here to brag about! I ordered a Salisbury Steak that was supposed to be covered in a stroganoff sauce! Well the meat was a mystery because it tasted more like an overbreadcrumbedc dry concoction of tasteless meat! The so called stroganoff sauce seemed like gravy mixed with ground up mysteries! (I've actually seen more appetizing canned dog food with gravy! ) I ordered Lima beans they came out somewhat hot but more like they were thrown in hot water that was cooling down as it reached the table! My Wife ordered a Batter Fried Haddock which she did enjoy! Our server was great and attentive and the coffee was good! Just a recommendation if your going to have a special menu make sure the items you put on it are special not some misfit concoctions! 1 star because of a really good server and I threw in another because my wife enjoyed her Sandwich! One of the very few restaurants in the Pine Grove area. Wide selection of items and I've never had anything terrible here. Why they call it a cafe is beyond me, since it's really a restaurant. My dad always gets the broasted (or fried) chicken, which has typically been good. We were there on Mother's Day and I got the chicken also. I didn't think it was top notch like it has been in the past. Not terrible, just not like I've had it in the past. If you get the French Onion soup, be prepared to experience it "PA Dutch Style" which means they do not use the appropriate slice of bread but rather seasoned (and over salty) salad croutons, which lend an entirely different taste. Green beans will also be PA Dutch Style, i.e. "cooked to death" but I still like them because that's what I grew up on. Service was a little slow, but I'm sure that's because they were packed and it was Mother's Day. No big deal. More time to spend with Mom. I didn't have any dessert but the chocolate cake with peanut butter icing looked great. Great homestyle comfort food!!! Huge helpings! Great wait staff! My first visit left such an impression on me that when I'm in the area (Jeeping at the nearby Rausch Creek Offroad Motorsports park) my jeeping buddies and I make it a point to stop in. Customer service is second to none. Our hostess went waaaaay beyond most anyone elses efforts to seat our large group all together. I've only eaten there about half a dozen times, the first being great. I believe I had the apple-smoked sausage, and it was fantastic. However, every other time I've been there, it was a let down. I typically stop while passing by and see a special I really want. Today it was liver & onions. Onions are fine, mashed potatoes are bland, but the gravy more than makes up for it. The liver, however, is seriously overcooked, so hard it's like thick leather that I can barely chew. What a disappointment! Last time it was Shepards Pie, which tasted ok, but the serving size seemed more like for a 3rd grader, not a grown man, so that made it very overpriced. I've noted that I'm not the only one who noticed a large difference between the food the past year or two from that of a few years ago. I doubt I'll return, sadly, because I love supporting local businesses, and I cannot recommend them anymore. read more

There are ton of good reviews here so I will just say a few things. The broasted chicken is excellent. The pork and sauerkraut special on Thursday is a favorite. To bad Thursday is only once a week. Meals come with a choice of 2 or 3 sides. A nice big list of choices! Rice Pudding is listed as a vegetable. I always get rice pudding as one of my veggies. I used to go there after the Corvette show in schullkill haven, and took alot of people with us, and the food was good. Stopped in ther today for lunch. Ordered a veal Cutlet with gravy on the side frenchfries that I wanted crispy they were terrible, three Vegetables. Anyway the Veal was like rubber,tough you name it the Vegetables were good. Could not eat the Veal it tasted like organic. Took the meal back, ask me what I wanted in return. Got a Grille Cheese no chips no pickle not to bad cost me $7.95 plus the Vegetables which were Beets 5 slices $4.00, cucumber salad a mouthful, $3.75. Don't go there it's a total Ripoff. Red Lion serves up classic comfort foods and is located conveniently off 443. We have been coming here for about 10 years and not a whole lot has changed. They are slowly making some changes to try to attract a younger crowd, the bar area has gotten a bit of an upgrade and some menu items have been added. The pricing is somewhat fair, although the extra charges for sides is a little much considering most places don't charge for side containers of condiments. All-in-all the food and service are good, considering it's about the only place around and options are limited. read more
