Every dish made to order, steaming perfect noodles covered in a spicy perfect pad Thai sauce. Be good to yourself and order the spicy, mild or medium pad Thai is doing a disservice to the cook and you. Limes are served aplenty on the side. The serving is plentiful maybe a bit smaller than other servings. It disappeared fast and my afternoon was spent with find lunch memories. Omg and the shrimp chips! The food is very good, I'm a fan of Yum Neau, which for me is the benchmark I use for grading Thai restaurants. Their version is good not great. Siam Spicey is still my favorite in Detroit, but I come here because the owners are wonderful people. This is definitely go-to place whenever I have a craving for Thai food. Penn's Thai is truly a local business. My usual order is always Pad Thai with shrimp and Gai Kao with shrimp. Just keep in mind that "hot" is REALLY hot, so if you can't handle heat, make sure you opt for medium or less. The lady owner is very sweet. There is also a Penn's Thai KITCHEN (in Royal Oak), and it has no relations with this Penn's Thai on Rochester. The dish Gai Kao is very unique as I've not seen it on other Thai restaurant menus. If you like Pad See Ew and Pad Kee Mao then Gai Kao is the dish for you. It's a flat noodle soy sauce base, but packs some heat in the dry pepper flakes. read more

I waiver, and actually between 3 and 4 stars. I am rounding up because they were nice and they gave me a vegan soup...normally I just don't get soup but they were very accommodating. I didn't see a bathroom. It could be through the kitchen...but I doubt it. The food was pretty ok. The spring rolls came in 3s, and the soup was good. The pad thai was what leans me towards the 3 stars. Next time I am in the area, I will look into the Indian place, because I hear it is awesome. But I would go back here too. Love this place this is the best! I've had a lot of Thai food in my days! Penn is one of my favorite! When I can I drive 25 minutes to get Thai food when there are 4 closer to me! No one makes good food like this place especially their Pad Thai it's the best! Pretty solid Thai food. I am not sure if I would make this place my go to for Thai as I have a place right across the street from my office that I like just as much if not slightly better, but I wouldn't be opposed to eating here. I do like the fact they give you a complimentary cup of Hot and Sour Soup with your lunch that my other place doesn't do so they got that going for them. Also when it comes to spice they are pretty true to their temperatures. Hot was hot while I have seen places where Hot is more like Medium or in other cases Hot Plus. Timmy likes his Thai spicy, but I also like to know what I am getting myself in to and don't like surprises. The Pad Thai I had was good, but as Holly S. pointed out they use frozen veggies in place of fresh ones. This was pretty apparent in both taste and look. It's not like they were freezer burnt or anything, they tasted just fine. You can just tell they are trying to cut corners either with prep time, cost or both. The place is on the smaller size and I find it funny that the tables they use for their booths are from Joe's Crab Shack. When I saw that it gave me a chuckle. The food is excellent here They would served you free shrimp chips which is good. I ordered dinner portion of massaman curry with chicken, spice level medium. The flavor is really delicious. The potatoes are soft and marinated well. The chicken is fresh and tender. I also had the lunch portion before and it is perfect for one person and they provide free cup of soup. I also ordered Tom Yum soup with shrimps. The soup base is at the right sourness level and the flavor is really balanced and delicious. They only serve soup after 3 pm. I love this place and have since we moved into the area about 3 years ago. Wonderful service and amazing staff. We know the owner quite well as she sees us there a lot! Everything is very fresh and delicious, best Thai in the area honestly. They make their own bbq pork and order the Thai sausages from an authentic place! I don't have a favorite on the menu as everything is amazing, but any of their fried rice is great, especially the garlic fried rice. I would 100% recommend to anyone who loves Thai food, or just anyone willing to get some good food in Troy. read more

Atmosphere is nothing special, but by far the best Thai food in SE Michigan. All the "safe" things that other places do okay, this place does great (i.e. crab rangoons, Pad Thai, spring rolls etc). My favorite dish here is the Pad Ped with shrimp though. You'd never guess it from driving by, but I've been telling people for years, this plaza is an Asian food hidden gem. The Korean, Indian, and sushi place in the same strip are great as well. read more

I was craving Thai food and was glad that I came here! I got the Pad Thai with tofu with medium spiciness. Could have been spicier but I didn't want to chance getting hot and not being able to enjoy my food. Not crazy oily/greasy like other Pad Thai I've had. Reasonably priced. A cup of soup and a dish of puffy rice crackers were provided while I waited. And there's free wifi so I could linger over my meal! Never felt any pressure to leave. On a night where indecisiveness made the dinner choice all the more difficult, we decided upon this hole-in-the-wall Thai place because of the great reviews. The chicken pad Thai and the chicken pad prik nor Mai were both great and were preceded by a small bowl of hot and sour soup which was just right on this cloudy, rainy day. And for dessert, the coconut ice cream was a very very good surprise. P.S. Went on a Friday night around 6:30 and no one else was there. I don't get it!! Pretty solid Thai food. I agree that it's excellent, but I would not necessarily call it the best Thai food ever - not even in the Detroit area. Have lived in NYC & eaten Thai all over the US. Had what they called Gai Koa, which I believe is generally chicken and rice in the Thai street food. No matter. Here they differentiate between Pad Thai as thin rice noodles which are NOT done in a wok, and their Gai Koa is wide noodles, done in a wok, with basically the same sauce treatment. Delish! I won't mention the name of the metro area Thai place that I think is better, because I don't mean to denigrate Penn's Thai, which is close to my Troy office, and the one particular place I prefer is not in the area. I DO wish I had thought to order a cup of tom yum soup (again, I THINK they serve tom yum - they list only "hot & sour" on their menu), since so many other Yelpers indicate how much they love the soup here and the fact that it's included if you dine in. Wonder if they'd consider offering it to those waiting for take-out? I'll be back! read more

This place is a "yes". As far as a take out Thai place, this has to be the best I have had. The place itself isn't fancy and table space is limited so get here early or plan on taking out. For lunch it was quick. The Pad Thai was incredibly fresh and it was spiced great. I ordered medium plus and was definitely spicy. I usually waiver between medium and medium plus. I wasn't crying, but I probably would go with medium next time. Yelp says there are a lot of Thai places nearby and most are rated highly. Meh! First time here, based off of reviews. I had basil fried rice with chicken... one of my go to's at Thai restaurants. The positive.. the flavor of the rice was really good. The negatives... the chicken was bland (I could tell it was thrown in the mix as an after thought), the rice was gummy and there were hardly any green beans (which is one part I normally love about this dish and why I order it). Soooo happy I found this place. I'm visiting town for work and completely relied upon Yelp reviews. I was not let down at all. I ordered way too much food for myself. I don't know if there were choices on the size of the items I ordered or not. I have enough rice leftover for 2 more meals. I wish my hotel room had a microwave. The Green Apple salad is amazing. The food here is great, much better than the other thai in the troy area. ive had lunch here a few times tried the pad thai, pad prik, and the woonseen. All flavored great, so delicious!!. Large Portions. i always order thai hot and very rarely do i see any real heat... not this place... so be warned, hot is smokin hot. The resturant is kinda small, and kinda cookie cutter decor, but always clean and presentable, best suited for lunch or carry out dinner. However if you do eat in you get a bowl of the soup and shrimp chips immediately after sitting down, the soup is too good to pass up so i always eat in for lunch. :-) read more

I ordered takeout from this place. Pad thai beef and pad thai chicken. Both were some of the worst pad thai ive ever had. Noodles were stuck and clumped together, meat and noodles were both dried out, packaging was econo (styrofoam). Maybe better fresh than 2 hrs later but ive had pad thai from several other places and did not have these issues. A small and unassuming hole-in-the-wall Restaurant with great food. It seems to me that most of their business is carry-out given the fact that the inside is very small. The only disappointing thing is that they seem to be closed for extended vacations when I'm craving it most. As with most Thai restaurants, their sauces are different than most. For instance, some use a curry based sauce for some of the dishes while others do not. If you have a preference one way or the other, be sure to ask so you're not disappointed. read more

I'm not a huge Thai fan. I order everything "No Spice"! Their pad thai is very good, but I usually get fried rice. It's loaded with fresh stir-fry veggies, and you can add meat if you want it. The crab rangoon appetizer is delicious. read more
