Great place to get all the unique Italian groceries! They have a huge selection of fresh cheeses and meats that can be ordered by weight. They also have a freezer full of all different kinds of raviolis! I recently started getting into making homemade Neapolitan style pizzas and I was able to find all my ingredients here for that - grande cheese? They got it. A huge 55lb bag of Blue Caputo 00 flour for a price that can't be beat? You get they got it! I'm also a big fan of their freshly made pastas by the check out counters. It's easy to not notice it but definitely worth looking into. I believe you can buy fresh pasta by the bundles. Only minor negative is its often hard to find fresh baked bread since it flies off the shelves early in the mornings. If you're a cheese lover, come visit here. There's a wide variety of cheese that you can buy in various amounts. I was amazed at all the flavors and origins I saw. Last April, smack in the middle of the pandemic, I found myself running dangerously low on bread flour. Suddenly everyone and their mother was buying flour to bake bread - which seemed supremely unfair because I had always baked my own bread and now couldn't get flour! Why did those new wannabe bakers deserve to be the only ones with bread?!?!? Anyway, I don't know how I discovered it, but it turned out that the only place with bread flour in the entire tri-state area was Pennsylvania Macaroni Company. In no time at all, I visited and was able to buy a 50-pound bag of high-quality flour that kept my kids in fresh bread for quite a long time. And their many pastas, array of interesting cheeses, fresh produce and other great ingredients were simply the icing on the cake. Seriously GOOD FOOD. One of the best markets in Pittsburgh and my favorite place in the strip. The vibe here makes you come alive. Their cheeses and deli meats are so versatile and reasonably priced (a lot cheaper than franchise super markets) and SOO fresh. They literally have everything. And they have such a wide selection of macaroni, sauces, and any type of Italian good. I recently bought their frozen homemade ravioli and it was amazing! I usually stop in evey other month or so. Variety of food depends on the time of year and have some specialty items. My regular order consists of meatballs, ravioli, pierogies, cheese, and bread. My favorite is the pepperoni cheese that's hard to find elsewhere. Service really depends on the worker. I've had some good ones and other really bad ones. This last time wasn't good. The employee was too busy talking with other coworkers. The previous lunch meat on the slicer must have been coated in pepper. When I got home to enjoy some, most of my cheese was covered in it. I don't like pepper and has a very strong flavor to me so I avoid it. Working at a deli before, it's common sense to wipe down the blade after each meat or cheese or if there's flavoring on the meats to prevent this from happening. I wasn't able to eat any of it. I get the store can be packed at times but this was on a Thursday before lunch and wasn't crowded. read more

Seriously, if the Pittsburgh Strip were a shopping mall, Penn Mac would be an anchor! Everything general that can be said has been said, so I'll be specific: They sell Saint Lucifer Habanero Spice. And I got a steel replacement for my Garlic Slicer - which I have been forgetting forever. Bam! It was right in front of me at Penn Mac. The store is crowded, but they have what you need. Not much space to browse, so be prepared to hold your ground against the hoard of people that you'll encounter. There are hidden gems that you must have from the Penn Mac. Don't count on any smiles from the checkout crew, they have never indicated they are capable of more than processing goods into money. Only bummer, but comes at the end of the visit! read more

In this day and age of service issues and the customer being left behind, it was more than refreshing and,quite frankly, impressive that the president of this company would reach out to a customer and did t he right thing. I stopped over here with my family since my son wanted to get some cheese. This place sells cheese from all over the world and lists them by country. Depending what type you want can range anywhere from reasonable to very expensive however, the cheese smells so good! They also sell packaged cheeses, In the back there is an Italian deli which a lovely display of meats you can buy. There is so much here you can literally go crazy! in another room they had various packaged pastas along with different hot sauces. Those sauces had some of most X-rated names for them but we enjoyed a good laugh looking at them. There was a third room where you can buy fresh produce and if you are into making your own pasta they sell all the equipment you need to do so. They also carry coffee grinders, rolling blades, and other things if you want to be creative. Willing to shove out some extra money for fresh pasta? They have that too! Fresh pasta only lasts a couple of days but they will cut enough for your needs. The list goes on but the only way to really enjoy this place is to drop in and experience yourself. Not what it used to be. For years I've made a special trip here to buy great cheeses and other fresh delicacies. One of the best things about it was the woman behind the cheese counter. She knew about every cheese, and could help you pick one for your needs or taste. Not the two guys who served me today. They don't know a thing about what they are selling, and made me feel rushed. It appears they see their job as cutting chunks of cheese off a wheel, nothing more. On top of that, prices have gone up, to the extent most other places have better prices now. I'm sorry, but Penn Mac is no longer my default place to buy food on the strip. read more

I do most of my grocery shopping here. They have everything I need and then some. Fresh meats, cheeses, homemade pastas and sauces. I'm Italian so being able to shop authentically makes life easier. Do yourself a favor: walk into the deli room, stop, close your eyes, and breathe in deeply. That smell is close to heaven. I did this and a few minutes later I noticed my friend do the exact same. Bins and barrels of nuts, beans, pasta, etc; huge metal cans of bulk olive oil; giant plastic buckets of olives; a few dozen cheeses; several Italian-style deli meats and several traditional American selections; spices from half-gallon size down to little $1 2-oz cups; every sort of bottled condiment, sauce, pickle, garnish, and Italian-ish specialty food item that you can think of; big racks of baked goods; and a modest produce selection. This place has everything! My heart leapt when I saw gaperon cheese on their menu board. I've been looking for gaperon for almost two years. Alas, they didn't have any...big fat sad face. The frozen pierogis that I bought here were last night's dinner and tasted fantastic. Their baked good section is mostly bare by 2pm on Sunday, so go early! read more

The Penn Mac is a landmark in Pittsburgh. I am a comlplete fan, in particular of their cheese section, which in many ways is the world's best. They beat out the competition because of their excellent prices, selection, and their quality. I have checked the prices at Whole Foods and Market District, and often times you pay twice as much at those places for the same cheese. Carol, a.k.a. Dearheart, is a wonderful help, especially if you are there on a day when it's not as over crowded. Some other great things about the store...bulk spices (very reasonably priced), olive oil, dried fruit, deli meats, and more. While it may look a little run down from the outside and the aisles aren't incredibly clean, the fantastic quality, huge selection, and great prices make this a destination - and a truly awesome store. I was in need of an update review, as I have visited Penn Mac COUNTLESS times since I first reviewed. Penn Mac is where it's at with all things food and especially, Italian food. They have an incredible bulk section when you first walk in, where you can get nuts, dried fruits, grains, beans, etc. for a decent price. Most recently, I grabbed some ground flax and whole pecans, as I only needed a little bit of each for some recipes. If you make a left, you are taken into the most busy part of the shop on the weekends- the deli. Here you will find ALL of the cheeses you could ever want, and the best deli meats too. The folks behind the deli are really knowledgeable and have assisted me in finding the perfect cheese many times (I just try not to ask them too many questions when they are super busy). They sold a smoked hot pepper cheese around the holidays that was TO DIE FOR... if you see it, buy it. There's a freezer section back in this section as well, which is where you'll find frozen raviolis, other pastas, sauces, and pizza dough. I purchased their frozen pizza dough a month ago and we made pizza with it that weekend- it was excellent. So fresh, so tasty. I went back shortly after to buy some extras to keep in the freezer. If you walk straight back past the bulk section, you'll find all the spices you need. They sell everything from garam masala to onion powder in here. If you are looking for a special seasoning and don't feel like buying an entire large container of it, come here and check out their selection. I've purchased white pepper, jerk seasoning, and onion powder in little containers (all .99 cents each) and loved them! If you keep walking straight back, you'll find the bathroom before the stairs to the right (it's hard to find, so I figured I would point it out for you- you're welcome). If you're lucky, you'll also find wine back here that is available to sample. What's better than shopping in the strip on a Saturday morning and having a shot of red wine before 10:00 am? Answer: not much. If you walk to the right of the bulk section, you'll find the motherload of pastas, sauces, vinegars, oils, condiments, rices, all the goodies. Keep walking and you'll find fresh baked bread, home made pepperoni rolls, and their produce section. They also sell fresh pastas as well. I love this place, and come here almost every single time I'm in the Strip and definitely every time I am looking for a killer deli meat or cheese. One day I made the trek in to inspect the wares because someone on a talk thread had tipped me off that Penn Mac Co might have the hot sauce selection I so desperately craved. Upon entering you're greeted with all sorts of goodies. Bulk dry foods, cheese, barrels of bulk olives(MMM), meats, boxed items, olive oils, etc. The smells are strong and all of the tastes are equally, if not more so. After inspecting the cheese(and contemplating the benefits of a Cheese of the Month club), I rounded the bend and lo and behold, a beautiful selection of hot sauces! All different kinds, I inspected them all until I came across... Iguana Golden Habanero! This sauce is my favorite, a total all-star, and I just got a bottle of it imported for my birthday! As you can imagine, that was a costly endeavor, but here at Penn Mac, it is a mere $4! Incredible. There are a ton of other novelty sauces and whatnot if you're a fan, I recommend taking a look. As you exit to the back, there is some produce and a few lanes of registers. It was late on a saturday(They were about to close) and there was no line. I have shopped at PA Mac for about 37 years now, there is no place like it for their variety of cheeses, Italian meats, fresh, frozen, and dried pasta, bulk nuts, and, well, everything that I like! The people who work there are pleasant and helpful, too. Just an awesome place to shop. But they have certainly stepped up to another level recently. Because of this pandemic, and self-quarantining, I figured that this Easter would be just another day for my husband and me. Nothing special. But then, as the day came nearer, I began to crave certain foods that my Italian family would have at our big holiiday celebrations and decided to make a few of these recipes. I made my list and went to the PA Mac website to see if they were curtailing hours during this mess. And then I saw that they were offering curbside service! It was wonderful. I placed my order, was told when to pick it up, and the bags were brought out and placed in my car for me. I checked the order, one item was missing, and after a quick call to Rose she brought it out herself, within 5 minutes. Once this situation is over and I am comfortable shopping in stores with crowds again I will, I missed the wonderful "PA Mac experience" with the curbside service. My parents were visiting from out of town and we went here to look around and get some supplies for dinner. They had an amazing selection of classic Italian meats and cheeses. We went about an hour before close and they were out of baguettes but we got some amazing ciabatta bread for a couple of bucks. I've been buying at Penn Mac since their cheese counter was some plywood laid over two sawhorses. Sad to say, they are starting to jump the shark. Oh, out of convenience I still go there, but I've learned the hard way to check the goods VERY carefully and, as important, know who on the crew is jive. I wish I didn't have to buy there with that kinda cynicism hanging over me, but I'm no finocchio and I buy in larger quantities than some Millenial who is picking up a 1/4 lb. of cheese in order to replicate a recipe he saw in Bon Appetite. Maybe if I have to inspect EVERY tomato in the peck, I should find another tomato farmer. Yikes, in all of my reviews for my Labor Day trip to the P'burgh, somehow I completely missed this one. My bad! So, this place reminds me of my favorite Italian deli in Baltimore - Trinacria Macaroni Works. This place is MUCH larger, though, and has a way better selection of everything from pasta to sauces to fish and seafood. I was VERY impressed by the offerings here - if I lived here on a regular basis, I'd sure be taking advantage of everything that this store has to offer. It was HELLA crowded in here, though. I had to dodge people constantly in the aisles - it got to be an obstacle course after a while and I left with a huge headache. But the whole experience was completely worth it. My husband and I partook of the baked goods that were for sale outside - a diabetic's nightmare, no doubt, but ohmyGAWD those cannolis. I loved, loved, loved them. Next time we're here, we'll definitely have to stop at the cheese counter. There was a mob there when we went, and it's no wonder - I see why! Definitely coming back on our next visit. read more
