This is a must shop when I'm in Monroeville. The deli case is full of fabulous meats, olives and more. They have the absolute best Italian sausage, both the sweet and the hot. It is so lean and flavorful, it makes your meal extra special when you use it. It's a small store packed with loads of inventory. Lots of hard to find specialty items without a trip to The Strip is why I like shopping there. White anchovies, bulgur wheat, Imported pastas galore, upscale olive oils and vinegars, you name it. And not just Italian fare, there are lots of other Mediterranean foods as well as some Asian. A whole aisle of canned tomato products, an aisle of pasta, And.. a freezer section with cannoli, homemade pastas, meatballs for wedding soup, squid,and more. They also have their own wines and other products made in Italy. Every time i go in i find something else i need. Everyone who works there is so nice. It seems like a family. Family owned with an Old School local feel to the store. A little pricy but you get what you pay for here. Hard to find authentic items here. Clean and well organized store. I've been going to Labriola's for about 15 years. The service is always awesome. The food they make there is so good that I'm having to swallow as I type this. The food is delicious and authentic, some things are a bit pricey but it's a small specialty store so it's to be expected. I've spent over $100 here on several occasions. I love the deli but the service is so bad. I've been one of 3 people in the whole store before and the girl behind the counter at the deli has taken 20 minutes to cut a half a pound of ham and half a pound of salami lunch meat. With nobody else behind me. I understand if one person is in line it might make you "take your time" but it was extremely lazy and almost comical. I've also been in there multiple times when a kid is rolling boxes or a cart around (unloading food or something) and I just feel like I'm 1) in the way 2) and inconvenience. In 1 trip specifically I had to either apologize or say exuse me at least 7+ times because the isles are so narrow and I just felt like I was in his way. Have the teenagers do this task before the store opens or do this after you close the store. It's a very small store there is no reason to have employees wheeling carts around and getting in the way of shoppers in such a small shop. I will add this- the older women who is the cashier is extremely sweet, kind, and helpful. Overall, it's a great store. Cute little Italian market saves you from going into Pittsburgh to go to Penn Mac for the necessities. They had a good selection of dry pasta's and pasta sauces and oil's and deli counter items, especially cheeses and a great selection of olives! Their frozen food section is excellent with many varieties of premade pasta is ready to cook, along with various soups ready to eat. Great little selection of Italian candies and cookies, along with various types of tapas canned. Overall I was impressed with their variety, but I will still have to go to Penn Mac for some of my specialty cheeses. read more

Don't expect to find delicious, fresh baked goods in this store. The cookies are terrible. Very dry and stale from the back area in front of the deli. There is another table in the front that had half sized poppyseed rolls way over priced. I thought that possibly meant they were homemade and fresh. They were so dry I had to throw them away. They also had 1/2 pies. I bought a peach pie and it was terrible. I wasted so much money in this store, I will never go back. The frozen items on the left side of the store were also bad. Covered in frost and freezer burned. From the taste I suspect they have been in the freezer a very long time. I found no dates.on the packages. I was completely shocked at what my bill came to and what I could actually eat when I got home. Not much. I threw most of it in the garbage. read more

I can't complain about a thing here - except that it's so popular, the wait at the Deli line can be a while during the peak hours. They have lots of staff who are more than eager to help, and you can do some shopping while you wait on your orders. Everything is fresh and high quality. Because of this, we do NOT buy any deli items at the supermarket during our weekly trips, and always make a separate stop to get them at Labriola's. Another plus of this place is that their selection of Italian specialty items is impressive. Of particular interest is their range of authentic Italian pastas, of which we are big fans. Again, freshness is of the utmost importance, and they deliver on this promise. The freezer case is full of amazing things, like tiramisu, wedding soup, high quality ravioli, and lots more - certainly a big draw for our family. Finally, I have to give a special nod to what makes these stores truly special - the PEOPLE!!!! Service is always with a smile and always with significant knowledge on the subject matter. No matter what my recipes have required, the folks at the Monroeville and Aspinwall stores have always helped me get what I needed in the most friendly and professional manner possible. (I did see another interview where they felt the folks at the Deli were a little cold - maybe it's because I'm a "regular," but this has never happened to me. They're great. A must stop pretty much everytime I'm food shopping in Monroeville. A nice smaller store that carries specialty Italian goodies. Everything is always fresh, from the bread (Breadworks, Mancini's, others) to the deli selections, cheeses, and a lot of delicious desserts (most in small 2 slice containers so you don't overdo it - they are delicious!). Try the imported prescuito, or the daily made pepperoni rolls. They also have a nice coffee selection. Specialty kitchen ware lines the wall near the entrance...so buy a Bialeta expresso coffee maker - you won't regret it. Great store! read more

I was a devoted customer of the Penn Hills location of Leonard Labriola's for many years. Unfortunately, that location is now closed so I've had to take my business to Monroeville. There are many fine qualities about the Monroeville shop, as the deli is first class and the availability of speciality items is unmatched in the area. However, the service has been so poor on several occasions, that I simply can't give the store a higher rating. I will cite one particular instance to demonstrate my point. I ordered a deli tray to be prepared for a specific time on a Saturday. When I arrived at the store, which was very busy, I asked a woman in the front where to pick up my tray. She said, in a very hostile tone, that I had to go to the deli. I asked whether I had to wait in line and she said yes. This was annoying because my purpose in ordering the tray ahead of time was to get in and out quickly. The store was busy so the wait was quite long. I could literally see my tray behind one of the counters - it was so close I could almost taste it! And yet I had to wait in a throng of people for quite a long while before I could get it. When I get my tray I waited in the checkout line and - guess what! - the same woman waited on me. She was on the phone when I was checking out, berating the customer who had phoned in, finally hanging up and saying, "if you want food you should get your a** in the store!" Apparently she was mad because the caller was unsuccessfully trying to use the online ordering system. It was a particular annoying reaction given the current COVID situation.... This kind of thoughtlessness is just not classy. It really made me never want to go back to Leonard Labriola's. Also, the tray was a bit of a letdown. Very fine quality meats but very small portions. I could have paid half as much and had more food if I'd just gotten the meat directly from the deli and trayed it myself. Definitely wasn't worth the upcharge.... read more

Great Italian market and deli. Lot's of Italian specialties. The have a wide selection of dry goods, canned goods, baked goods just about everything Italian. Great deli, and prepared and frozen foods. When you enter, the smell is marvelous. Walking in the extensive freezer case is on the left with everything from deserts to pastas. The deli is all the way in the back, so you get to walk down one of the fully stocked aisles, causing you to check it all out on the way back. We went in today looking for one item and left with a dozen, including some hot sausage. Labriola's was a nice discovery for us. I am sure we will return. read more

Awesome market! They have a great selection of specialty shelf-stable items and their deli foods are delicious and plentiful. I especially love the varieties of olives, stuffed peppers, pepperoni, and mortadella. Everyone in my family claims their meatballs are the best they've ever had, and they're gluten-free, which means they have very little filler. I was happily surprised with how robust their gluten free selection was and I stocked up on GF pasta and gnocchi (which I've never seen in another store) to take home. Some of their desserts come in cute glass jars and champagne flutes which are also nice to keep, plus the desserts themselves are delicious. read more

I stop at Labriola's often but must admit, feel like an Irish/German outsider, especially at the deli counter. Everything I've ever tried I have thoroughly enjoyed, even if I didn't pronounce it correctly. Or quickly enough. The deli staff is not a warm lot, they are a busy crew. We love their hot spaghetti sauce, every deli offering that we've tried, Australian licorice (at the checkout counter) and their frozen selections - especially the wedding soup meatballs. I will never EVER make my own, again! There is a lot jammed into this little store, but it's definitely not a come-in-and-browse type of store; more like a hurry-up type of store... but no place has the flavors of Labriola's so when in Rome... I usually have a pleasant experience in terms of finding what I need. However, the staff are not consistently friendly, I've found. Not to mention, you will walk away paying more more than you intended, at no fault of your own. The younger boys working the deli are sweet but I honestly don't have a lot of nice to say after my last visit here. I called in advance to see if they had baccala, which is salted cod typically carried around the holidays in most stores. It's pretty hard to find outside of peak season. To my surprise, the woman on the phone said they carried it. When I got to the store, everyone look confused behind the counter after I asked for one pound--at $7/lb. Hesitating, the young man went to the back and grabbed me some fresh cod that looked delicious. However, he told me that the smallest incriminate he could give me was a pound and a half, which he insisted they were not able to lessen for me. Um why couldn't they just cut it? I didn't complain... Just took my cod and left. I walked out paying THIRTEEN DOLLARS --double what I intended--for almost 2 pounds of cod that I didn't even want. What happened to going over and beyond for the customer? The most disappointing aspect of this incident is that the other ladies behind the counter (one of whom had to have been the one I spoke with in the phone) remained tight-lipped and unapologetic for the inconvenience. It was one of those feelings where you know as soon as you turn your back they will all roll their eyes at each other. I vow never to return there for my cod-- and that's a shame because we, unlike most, buy it all year round! Next time, I will make the extra trip go to Global Food Market, where their cod comes frozen and is 10.99 per package for something I don't have to soak 7 days straight just to de-salt! read more

Deli counter in back makes ginormous sandwiches, but be specific about toppings or you won't get any! Love the frozen meatballs. A big container for under $6. An easy dinner for two or more. They make and jar their own sauce. Haven't tried it yet but it looks great. They also have their own house brand pies. I've got half a dutch apple in my fridge right now. Make that a quarter. This operation is over 90 years old. The food was spot on. However teenagers were running the counter and were disorganized. I don't blame the teenagers. First of all if you have a deli and someone asks for a sandwich to be made. There should be a bread supply behind the counter. The deli clerk shouldn't ask the customer to get bread off the shelf to make them a sandwich and a deli clerk should know how to make a sandwich especially if the customer directs him on how to make it. I used to work in a deli so I know what to do. Second of all there were so many people working behind the counter that day. The inventory I can get Cento crushed tomatoes in Northern Virginia, there was mold on the Arancini (Rice Balls). It just needs to be a little bit more organized. More especially behind the deli counter. Two people should beach sandwich makers/and meat slicers and 2 people should deal with getting the salad there should be more than one ticket dispenser one for the salads and one for the cold cuts and sandwiches. read more

There seems to be a theme in these low-starred reviews, the counter staff's unprofessionalism. There are those who say to disregard these reviews, but I will just tell you my story and you can decide for yourself. A man and I approached the deli counter, which had no customers, at almost the same instant, and the clerk looked at both of us but waited on him. That was OK, I worked a deli counter and sometimes it is hard to tell who really was first. Unfortunately, he had a large order and he could not decide on this or that, so 15 minutes later, there I stood. She finished with him, and as she looked over, another lady was just reaching the counter. The clerk turned on the "number" light, and the other lady grabbed a paper number from the dispenser like lightning. The clerk asked her what she wanted, like she had not seen me standing there all that time. I uncharacteristically challenged this, politely, saying that she had seen me standing there with no number system in use, so that I should be first and then the number system should be used, and that a sneaky customer should not be allowed to advance. The customer said nothing, though she should have said to take me first. The clerk said that the other lady had the next number, so she should be waited on first. I informed her that, then and forever, she could keep her lunchmeat, and walked away. I found a manager at the front of the store, who did not seem to care if a customer who has waited for their turn is skipped over. So, dear readers, is this five star service? Other writers have mentioned the variety of breads and other items at the store. I bought a loaf of Italian bread, and it was hard and stale all the way through. And, check the expiration dates on things as well, as the store does not have a high volume of business. There are indeed Italian pasta products they have that other stores do not, but they will be expensive; in fact, all the prices are high. For a serving of a ready-made deli item, you will pay the same or similar price as you would had you gone to an Italian restaurant. So, my advice is this. Expect to be treated poorly, unless you get lucky. Expect high prices, and do check expiration dates. Avoid the bread, or expect it to be stale. But, if you need "Tipo 0000" flour for pasta, you can get it there. However, consider the "theme" of over half of the reviews that state they were unfairly or rudely treated. Visited this market last week for the first time. I was greatly disappointed and will not return. The chicken parm was just okay, I have had better. My real complaint was I felt this location feels and looks dirty. The prepared lasagna in the deli had a long human hair laying ontop and the clerk did remove the tray when it was brought to her attention. The pasta figioli soup in the freezer section, I declined buying,due to it appeared to be just pasta in a tomato sauce. I love this soup but it didn't look anything like the soup I usually eat.The apple pie also was just okay, nothing special. Oh Mcginnis sisters I miss you so. I wish I could give this place more credit. I am from Pittsburgh originally and LOVE going there when I come for the weekends. I usually stop there and shop for my Bubba en route to see her. It is always such a great place to find unique foods. However, yesterday my experience was less than poor-fair.... it was AWFUL! As I was checking out, a product was mis-marked, so the cashier and I went back to double check and all of this product was mis-marked, so I was concerned because they were all mis-marked but I was being charged DOUBLE. When I asked to speak to a manager, he became very aggressive and rude, stating that I "needed to take it or leave it" at the price "really" was. I was so taken aback by his rude tone and personal space invasion! Then he added "You knew it was marked wrong anyway, you KNEW it was suppose to be more." I could not believe it! This place is HORRIBLE. The OWNER is RUDE AND OBNOXIOUS. Twice I tried to walk in to see what they got to offer and walked out almost swearing at them. I went one night, walked in- and it stunk like old mill. There was an old man in front of us who just walking around there. A rude Italian lady came and yelled at me and kinda kicked me out saying the store is closed and then started talking to the other customer who was there! How rude and RACIST! I tried to give it a try again, and went in broad daylight! This time I was looking for Imported Italian nutella (usually costs $6.99) but all the ones they had was expiring in 10DAYS. I asked if they had anymore in the back, the girls who were at the cash register gave me a lecture its like a freaking piece of gold coz they got it from Italy.... and ignored the fact that the product was expiring in ten days. The owner was called, ,literally five min of waiting, a whiny Italian man came and said no discounts for the piece of crap that needs to be consumed in ten days! I was not will to pay $7 plus tax for a jar of nutella, so stormed out fuming in anger. They are rude, and I will never ever walk in there again. If you want Italian stuff go to PENNMAC in Strip district. Don't waste your time walking into the nursing home smelling store where people are making you feel like they are doing you a favor by letting you in in there damn stinky store. I have always liked this market. They have lots of wonderful specialty Italian items. However, this evening I went into the store 10 minutes before it was going to close. Just needed to pick up two things. We asked the young man at the door if it was too late to pick up a few items and he said no so I went in and looked for my cheeses. Everything was fine - one of the other young men in the store even asked me if I needed anything else and I picked up a packaged cheese rather than have him slice me any. Then, an older gentleman appeared and said to my husband and I "Can you finish up because we want to close up" - after two other people had told me to take my time. For cryin' out loud, it's three days till Christmas - could he not have been so rude? I wanted to put everything back and walk out, but paid for my items. I felt really insulted. I don't think I will go to Labriola's Italian Market again. I will stick to my original plan of going to the strip. Customer service is everything. read more
