Perhaps it is due to it's relatively recent construction, but this is definitely one of the nicer W&S shops in the city. Certainly the nicest I've seen in West Philly. (This is why we CAN have nice things) The selection of wines and liquors is fairly standard but it seems like there is always something sitting on the shelf that I've never noticed before. The staff is generally courteous if not highly versed in the assorted merits of their stock. Of all the PA Wine & Spirits shops I have been too I like this one best. Their selection is way better than either of the Fairmount area stores and its on my way home from work. They use a normal line up behind the cash register you are going to use system, unlike some other stores I have been to whose system causes confusion. For a PA store that isn't premium this is a good bet. Also street parking tends to be pretty easy in this area. read more

Are we going to the same liquor store? If this wasn't the only place around, I'd definitely be going somewhere else. Wine selection consists of 7 different sizes of yellowtail, but there is a rainbow of flavored vodka. Don't go here for anything interesting or new; the selection truly is very limited. The employees are great & super friendly, and even on a Friday night the [long] lines move pretty fast, but yeeeesh, elsewhere in Philadelphia, there are ever-so-slightly-better liquor stores. RIP the Fresh Grocer Wine Kiosk, at least you were fun (you got to stand in the middle of a busy grocery store & be breathalized!!!). read more

It's nice having a store that's within walking distance, but sometimes coming here can be a pain. The selection is rather limited, and whoever thought up the organization for checkout should be fired. Selection is reminiscent of a corner liquor store in jersey or ny. They carry common table wines, cocktail mixers, and dark liquor, but expect the basics. This is definitely NOT like the center city stores at 13th street or even grad hospital. This store is much smaller and the selection is rather limited. There are three aisles in the store, and the center one is often occupied by the growing checkout line. During peak hours, the place is super packed! The line gets so long that you can't even browse the aisles to make your selection. Between the workers trying to restock the shelves, patrons standing in line to checkout, other confused patrons realizing that all those weird people gathered on the middle aisle are actually IN the checkout line, and people coming in to browse, it can become a pain in the butt really quickly! What makes this situation worse is when they decide to open a single checkout register. I'm not sure if this is just a coincidence or if it is supposed to be a security measure or something, but during non peak hours I've seen the registers on both sides of the store open, but not during the few peak times I've been here. Now that there's a new state store at 43rd and Chestnut, I really only come here as a last resort. If you get that urge, I guess you'll have to do what you have to do. This store's a convenient location and it's got you covered for common libations. But if you want better options and can make the trip a few blocks down the road, you're better off going to center city. read more

damn, this has been needed for a really long time. Let me paint you a picture: Not such a long time ago, before the new W&S opened on baltimore, those seeking refreshment needed to go into the dingiest store ever, look through a catalog and then test your chances that perhaps they would have what you wanted in the depths of the maze-like back of the store. you were never allowed to get your own bottles or even peruse the shelves. so unless you had an hour to kill playing trial and error, you were forced to take that $5 bottle of generic white Cavit, even though you wanted the big house red. So based on a comparative scale, the new wine and spirits gets 5 stars simply because it is a normal liquor store, and not some cold-war era rations station. read more

New Wine & Spirits in West Philly woot! It's brand spanking new - no grit or grime anywhere to be found, and oh so brightly light. It's a humorously small square property, but all the basics are in there. Never a long line that I've seen, so you can get in, get out, and get started. read more

Sure, I go here when I need to buy wine or liquor, but only because it is a few blocks away and PA liquor laws are totally whack. The wine selection at this place is terribly minimal and never changes. Staples are there in terms of liquor, but the wine selection could use a serious re-vamping and some sort of guidance would be nice. I know what I like and what I can buy in my $14 price range as far as wine goes, but I feel like over the past year and a half I have really exhausted all possibilities. There is always an absurdly long line, so be prepared to wait if you go anytime after 4:30pm. read more

I've only been in about half a dozen liquor stores in Pennsylvania, but I've been it plenty of "real" liquor stores. I can say PLCB stores are either one or two stars, never any better. This one get's two. One thing I'll throw out there: this is an incredible place to people watch. I took diversity (not just racial diversity, diversity of all sorts) for granted in college because, you know, the fifth year stoner communication major eats in the same place as the freshman, type A computer science major. Not so in the real world, except for this place. The patronage is equally divided between lower income people, twenty-something hipsters and USP/Penn kids. Anyway, I digress. As others have stated, the wine selection is pretty bad. The beer case is non-existent, because, you know, this is PA. The liquor selection is okay. Like someone else said, LOTS of flavored vodka. The points come off mainly because the store is so dingy. Yeah, it's West Philly, but Mariposa and Gold Standard are both a block away and they're really nice. Other flaws: long lines on a regular basis and employees who very clearly do not care about you or their jobs. I long for the day BevMo! enters the PA market. I don't think I can give any liquor institution above 3 stars unless they really, really impressed me. However, I like this one because it's usually not too busy, and it's right up the street from my house and thus right off the SEPTA trolley (literally stops right in front of it). The selection kind of sucks since it's a smaller store, so they don't have a lot of nicer wines which is annoying. But overall, whatever, does the job in this liquor-challenged state! read more

Been shopping there for years but my experience was so bad this evening I am done with that store. I have never written a Yelp review in my life, but I signed up as soon as I got home because that is how crappy I was treated this evening. There was a long line because it is the day before Christmas Eve. I was buying 6 bottles of wine so I grabbed one of the empty wine boxes they had stacked up in the back of the aisle I filled my box with wine and got in line. It was filled to capacity with 6 bottles. It is small in there and it was crowded so frankly no room for a cart. When it was my my turn to ring up she was silent so I said in a friendly way (because I am experienced in customer service and also the H.R. director for a major dealership), "Hi how are you this evening?" She wouldn't even give me the decency to respond to me she blatantly ignored me so I asked her if something was wrong. She acted like I peed in her coffee and responded, "for future reference don't put your things in a box you are to use a cart or a basket." How about next time a customer asks you how you are doing, since you can't say it first or even acknowledge them, you respond with, "Well, thank you for asking." If your store needs a consultant to come in for customer service training I do consulting so please reach out to me I can help you. Ms. policy enforcer you are talking to the Queen of policy. I have written entire policies for companies. Thank you for letting me know about your rules and regulations, but perhaps because there was a long line maybe did you consider I was doing you a favor by not making you leave your register and go grab a box for me when there is a line going to the back of the store? Just a thought Ms. policy. I let her know I have been shopping at state stores for years and never once in my life has anyone ever said that me. I asked her if it was a law. She was so rude and disrespectful when I asked her that I could not believe it was actually happening to me, a good paying customer, and tax payer who pays state store employees wages. I then asked her if she would like to see my I.D. She said, "why, would I want to see it? Are you paying credit or debit?" I then decided to play chess right back , "I thought because you are so concerned with your stores rules and regulations you might ask your customers for I.D. when they are buying alcohol."
