I have been coming here for almost 3 years. This was a new item and the BEST charcuterie board of my life. So creative, with flavor nuances in every item, not to mention the color. I felt like a child being given a palette of paints and able to mix and match so many flavor profiles on each grapefruit infused buttered bread point. I usually come here for the best French fries in fells point (!!!) or chicken pot pies for when I seek comfort. I love their Sunday night dinners and other specials. I'm from the south (NC) and though the food isn't southern the atmosphere and food is so cozy and has consistent quality. Classy & relaxing music is a plus. Food was really bad for the high prices. I got the beef burgundy pot pie and it was so nasty looking with a very soupie consistency, had one tiny , small piece of beef I ate in one bite, it had carrots that were not cooked well and it tasted nasty. My spouse got jambalaya, the rice was not cooked, it was crunchy. My friend got the only fish dish in the menu, she didn't eat it, it was sorounded by so much pesto sauce that the fish didn't look like a fish, it looks so bad and comical. She took a bite and promptly put it aside cause it had a bad taste. My other friend order wings, they were basic, subpar wings, nothing to write home about. All in all I wasted my hard earn money on a mediocre restaurant that has really bad food. We didn't complain to the waitress cause we felt sorry for her, she was nice. But whom ever is the "chef" here needs to be taken out and thrown into the harbor. The "chef" really sucks here, it was horrendous food and I wouldn't recommend this place to my mother in law (and I honestly hate her!!!) Or any of my acquaintances that I dislike. Gross food. Really enjoyed their brunch! Brunch runs Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM-3 PM. We got there on a Saturday at 1:30 and it was pretty quiet. There's a lot of space for seating inside, but there are also outdoor tables available. If you're going for brunch, I recommend any of their Eggs Benedict dishes. I tried a bit of the Canadian bacon, crab cake, and smoked salmon each, and they were all so flavorful and filling. The best part though? The potatoes. Hands-down the best potatoes I've had in my life: they were the perfect level of flavor and the crispy skin was a delightful complement to the soft, chewy insides! read more

Our server was nice and attentive at the beginning; however at the end of our meal when we didn't want more drinks or desserts, and the fact that we wanted to split our bill and separate the alcohol from the food bill seems to tick him off for some reason. (We were in Baltimore for business and do not get reimbursed for alcohol. We were just following rules.) The smiles and polite conversations seemed to halt. Came here on a 95 degree day because of 4 stars on Yelp and the fact that they had outdoor seating--we had our dog so needed to eat al fresco. Turns out if we had sat outside the restaurant (rather than in the shaded patio),we would have had a great water view--but full sun. So we chose in the shade, near the smoker (both cigar smoker and the meat smoker), where we and dog could cool down. We ate as if it wasn't stultifyingly hot outside--brisket, crab cakes and crawfish pie. They are known for their brisket and it indeed was delicious. But what I really liked was that crawfish pie--crawfish and veggies in a phyllo dough pastry on top of a remoulade sauce that was way more delicious than any remoulade I've made or had before. That was the treat of the meal. Crab cakes were meh--despite it being Maryland, I'm surprised at how often crab cakes are just OK (although still better than anything outside of MD), but I'm getting more and more picky! read more

The baked Brie as well as the other appetizers are fairly delicious but the main course meals are mediocre. We first went to another establishment for dinner, and after hearing the wait time, decided to find an alternative. Stumbled across Penny Black, which was a safer bet based on Yelp reviews. The place wasn't too busy when we went in, but soon had what seemed like local patrons enjoy their favourite watering hole. Ordered the crab cake meal and brisket plate. They were out of brisket, which really disappointed me at first. The waitress suggested a few alternative options, one being the crawfish pie. I was so happy the brisket was out. The concierge at my hotel raved about the house-cured bacon, so thought I'd give it a try and it did not disappoint. The salmon BLT was very good--the bacon lived up to the hype. Penny Black is on the corner right across from the water and next to many popular Fells Point bars. It's a little quieter, which gave our group a great opportunity to catch up and chat. The atmosphere is quaint, old school, classic, and clean. Their food is REALLY great. All dressings and sauces are made in-house. They smoke their wings out back. I wanted to try all 3 unique flavors - the blackberry and bourbon were both incredible. They also serve steamed shrimp and clams until closing time... great drunk food. Unassuming from the exterior, Penny Black drew us in initially because of the vibe we could see from the door. After passing bar after bar full of loud TVs, it suited what we were looking for -- we didn't want a place to get rowdy, rather a quiet spot to enjoy dinner. From the get-go, the ambiance was perfect. Dimly lit with classic music playing softly, Penny Black set the mood for the delicious dinner ahead. Our waitress was very attentive, helpful and lively. We ordered the baked brie as an appetizer -- it is not to be missed!! So delicious. For our entrees, I ordered the BLT, featuring house cured bacon. It came with fries, and all was perfect. My fiancé ordered the crawfish pie -- as someone who is not easily impressed, this dish is one he will never forget. Just the right amount of spice, and a unique blend of flavors (he said the curry really came through for him) the crawfish pie is something you've got to check out. Pro tip: if you've got some fries lying around, be sure to dip them into the sauce served on the pie. Pretty amazing. My friend and I each ordered the crab cake burger which comes with a side of fingerling potatoes- amazing, really hit the spot! I've been craving this burger ever since I left. My other friend got the crawfish pie and enjoyed it. I myself got the smoked brisket platter with fingerling potatoes and a salad instead of the fries and the slaw. Potatoes were hot and pretty decent. The salad was a salad. Not enough dressing but I was starving and too hungry to care. The smoked brisket was okay, but the sauce that came on top of it wasn't my preference (I didnt know there would be a sauce on top), but that's a personal preference. Food took upwards of 45minutes to come out. By the time it came out, I just wanted to eat. This was my first actual meal of the day, and after a 45minute wait, the food felt underwhelming. My friends and I went up the BMore to visit our friend who had just moved up there in June 2017. We didn't realize that a lot of the bars didn't have food, which we were used to in DC. The bouncer outside one bar suggested this place. It's a cute bar with attentive bartenders, but really disappointing table service. I've stopped in here a couple times for drinks and light eats. Service has always been pleasant, but not always the most efficient. Last time our drinks came out just before our food arrived. I've had their French onion soup and it was solid. My husband has also enjoyed their mussels. The two cocktails we had the last time were delicious and packed a punch. Thank goodness for Uber. Our server was a little slow in taking our orders but I don't blame her too much - I think she was the only server for the bar/restaurant area. Overall the food was pretty good. I came here with a bunch of coworkers after work one time. It was pretty empty but then we did go at 5 pm on a Monday afternoon. I was pretty disappointed to see that they did not have much cocktail options - they had the classics such as Aviation, French 75 and Moscow Mule. Nothing special. They did have a large beer menu but I am not a huge fan of beer so this is not a place for me. I also ordered Smoked Wings ($10.95) and French fries (apparently this is off the menu, not sure why). The wings were super smokey but nothing special about the flavor. French fries... well they are fries. It's hard to mess up fries. What made me give this place 2 stars is that I waited over 1 hour for my smoked wings. I understand the slow service if it's busy but there were only 2 other tables occupied apart from our table. We ate the pot pie, the steak and fingerling potatoes, the scallops and ratatouille, the crab cake and crab cake burger, the wings, the bourbon French onion soup..... all was VERY delicious. Everyone was very satisfied with their meal except the guy who didn't bother to ask what ratatouille was!!! The drinks were good. Nothing amazing, good prices for a good selection. The dessert... was really good! The crime brûlée was a solid dessert, but the baileys ganache.... wow. Spilt this dessert, don't try to tackle it on your own! The service was also very good. Tonight was the first time I ever ate here although a lot of my friends say they come and get a great steak. I wasn't too hungry and my friend and I shared a Caesar salad w blackened shrimp and the brisket melt sandwich. I'm a huge fan of brisket and it's not an easy cook. UPDATE: Wow. Talk about going down hill. The service continues to be great. However, the food was a disaster last time I went. They were out of the first three things we attempted to order. The fried zucchini was so greasy I could hardly eat it. Think raw zucchini dipped in tempura and fried. Not great . The crawfish pot pie used to be a favorite but I can't say that anymore. It was room temperature and tasted like frozen food someone had attempted to heat it in a microwave. Now the fun part...the wings we ordered looked beautiful on the outside but were raw on the inside. Yum. Hate to say it but Penny Black lost me as a customer. While "up" we loved the steamed mussels and shrimp, beer list, music (there was a touch tunes and we played all ours faves) and the overall atmosphere had a cozy/friendly, wooded interior. After some issues and closing, the original owner from decades back is back and in charge. I must say that even though we enjoyed going there during it's good days around 2009-2012 ( I think) it is even better now. The bar area is much the same with its long wooden bar & tables and the lighting remains dim (love that! very chill) but the touch tunes is gone. Music still plays and ranges from Jazz to 60s classic rock but can't pin down one genre favored over another. The food is excellent- not a big menu as it might have once been but what it offers it does very well. Of note are the fish and chips with very light breading and a couple huge pieces of fresh fish. Yup, good. The fries appear cut in house, but the fish steals the show. The hearty and mildly spicy seafood gumbo must be tried, an old chef recipe. The salads (you can add a fried egg), sandwiches (chicken is good) and wings have also proven to satisfy both the hunger and the finicky palate. The bread pudding is a mighty fine finish too. The only disappointment is the absence of any ice cream, which I prefer to add to most any dessert to balance my caky/crunch sweet tooth. The best part about the place is the staff. Having gone there during the week, on a Sunday, and Saturday night all encounters with different staff have been far above average. The brother- sister duo who are related to the owner are "real", friendly, and down to earth. Everyone else has treated us as if we were had been regulars, always attentive and with a smile. The beer list has been solid with local favorite Heavy Seas (Loose and yes, while it lasts: the mighty fine Tropicannon), the Resurrection and dark (but light and smooth) Union Black Wing Lager. I came to penny black before the Nevermore haunted attraction. We stopped in just to have a few cocktails before we had the life scared out of us. I had the last word martini and my date had the mule. Both drinks were delicious, especially mine. We sat outside and it was really nice out and quiet. I loved the ambiance of the restaurant. As soon as you walked in the aroma of the food was delightful. Had I not have eaten before we came I would have definitely tried some of their food. I did peruse the menu and everything looked fantastic and priced appropriately. After leaving the restaurant I noticed my debit card had been charge more then it should have been. I contacted the manager John via Facebook and he was extremely responsive and explained to me the accidental error that occurred and refunded the entire bill to me for the inconvenience. It was very much appreciated but I would have had no issue paying for my drinks. It goes to show he cares about his guests. After going through that with them and having such a pleasant experience the first time I went in I most definitely will be returning next weekend with my boyfriend to try their food and I will let you all know how that goes! On the corner of a cobblestone street in Fell's Point overlooking the harbour sits Penny Black. It's a dreary Monday at noon, but it's abuzz with happy chatter and sweet tunes. The playlist itself is perhaps the best couple hours of music I've ever heard in public. Obscure Amy Winehouse, classic Tony Bennett, Etta James, Everly Brothers, Louis Armstrong, Edith Piaf... I order the scallops with "house bacon, ratatouille, toasted fennel, and mustard seed" ($11.95). They come gently charred and tender with a nuanced, subtly complex sauce anchored by green chili oil and peppercorns. Perfect. Eggplant seems to have been replaced with zucchini, but it delights nonetheless, and is beautiful besides! (I will add pictures!) The market salad ($6.95) is generously apportioned, piled high with finely shred parmesan and brilliantly executed homemade croutons -- the kind that makes you thank the food gods for inventing the baguette. My sister has a turkey BLT gives me her chips, and they are the thick-cut kettle cooked golden kind. Awesome. I linger past lunch in a bit of a reverie; the space goes from a full house crowd to a group of regulars chatting animatedly at the bar. Everyone seems to know each other. The barkeep Jimmy is the kind of friendly that could warm even the coldest heart, all grace and chuckles, somewhat of a very personable Morgan Freeman. He is both engaged and engaging, regaling the folks with local anecdotes met with laughter. The banter floating over from the bar solidifies it for me: I know that they've captured a chemistry here. Truly special, elusive...seemingly from a different, kinder, slower time. At this point I have loitered well beyond the lunch hour but felt nothing but welcome, enjoying the good vibes all around. Stay as long as you'd like, Jimmy enthuses, joking that they are open till 2am if I'd like to stay till then (note the hours differ from what is listed on Yelp, as I was here for lunch way earlier than 4pm). When I ask for a refill of hot water for my tea, the owner instead brings me a brand new tea with a fresh teabag. Upon noticing I was still there, Jimmy on his own accord offers to take me on a personal tour, showing me the rest of the restaurant with pride. Then without missing a beat he returns back to the congenial chat with the people at the bar. (Is this guy for real...? What a gem!) I find out that the reimagined Penny Black has been open for about five months, after being closed for a year of renovations. The restored original black tin tile ceiling, church pew for bench seating, and hand-blown milk glass pendants all emanate a distinguished charm. It's clear a lot of care has been invested here. There is another, smaller bar Jimmy tells me is to become a sushi bar, another dining room, and a long patio strung with Christmas lights, eventually to have heat lamps so it can be enjoyed year-long. When I ask about upstairs, Jimmy tells me the owner's family actually lives there. It certainly feels like home here, cozy and sweet, but with better food and tunes. Any minor complaints I might have had about Penny Black are dwarfed by my contentedness. (Being Canadian, I'm not sure if my salad is actually too salty or if it's just suited to local tastes?) They don't have wifi, but then again, it is the perfect place to spend with loved ones (or new friends) and unplug. To engage. My friend's crab cake was underwhelming, he didn't enjoy it very much. His dish came with a side of potatoes, which he didn't not ask for, and a side of asparagus which was over cooked. Whatever, it happens. I did not like the pie at all. It was sitting in a pool of red "creole style" sauce so the bottom was soggy and if you didn't like the sauce (which I did not) there was nothing you could do because the bottom of the pie was completely drenched in it. As for the filling inside, it was just a strange texture and color and very dry. I took two bites and stopped eating. I just didn't enjoy it so my friend insisted I let them know. I told my server I didn't like it and he asked if I wanted anything else. Considering we were 0 for 2 with what we had ordered so far, and that server didn't really seem to know anything about the menu, I had given up on the food and just asked him to take it back. I figured it was best just to stick with drinks. We get our bill....they charge me for the pie even though I barely ate any and sent it back! The server said the best he could do was take off $6. This is the first time I have ever come across an establishment that has charged for a dish that was sent back. Albeit, perhaps there was no technical error but I shouldn't have to pay for something I didn't like. And this could've been avoided all together had the server been trained a little better and been able to actually explain what was on the menu. On top of that, they charged my friend for the asparagus which they could've easily subbed for the potatoes but of course they did not. From the looks of their menu it seems that they've put some thought into and it and want to offer something more than your run of the mill bar food. However their attitude comes across as kind of take it or leave it which for me doesn't create an inviting dining experience. I was really rooting for this place. I love jazz and it was nice to see a different type of bar in the neighborhood but unfortunately the dining experience is severely lacking. If you do go here, stick with drinks. There's a ton of other dining options in fells that'll fit exactly what you're looking for and provide a better experience. read more

I enjoyed the mango swordfish dish. However I was disappointed with the wait time and the staff. Cool styling in the interior though.
