I visited Ash Bar for breakfast during my recent stay in Baltimore. I loved the art deco vibe and bright lighting - it was a great place not only for a much-needed (hello jet lag) cup of coffee, but to spend some quality time on the ol' laptop while I waited for my breakfast order. There were lots of tempting things on the menu, but I ended up with my old fave: a 2-egg breakfast. Sometimes, you just need a couple of eggs, some toast, bacon, and potatoes to start the day. Ash Bar is definitely a chill spot. The atmosphere gave me Gordon Ramsay show vibes--small, quaint dining room with a prominent bar that kind of anchors the whole space. It feels intimate but still lively. I ordered the crab dip along with the "Rose Colored Glasses" mocktail. The crab dip was decent--edible, but not my favorite. It came out warm, and the bread leaned a little too burnt for my liking, which threw things off a bit. Now the mocktail? The star of the show. The Rose Colored Glasses had a great flavor profile with just the right balance of sweetness--refreshing and well put together. Ended up coming to Ash Bar after we tried to get into Bloom but it was packed. It's a very cute like cocktail bar that gave me Art Deco vibes. Our server was very nice and helpful. She brought us water right away. We ordered a round of margaritas and my friend ordered the cheesecake, which she didn't enjoy at all. The bar wasn't crowded at all but the bartender took almost 20 mins to make our drinks. The server would keep going to the bar to check on our drinks and they were still not started. When they were finally at the table, we enjoyed them. Very well mixed. Ash bar is such a great place for cocktails and conversations. I would definitely come back. Fellow foodies and drink lovers, I loved Ash Bar at The Ulysses Hotel so much, it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The cocktails were expertly crafted my Manhattan was bold and perfectly balanced, the kind where one is more than enough. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and I ended up having an amazing, laughter filled conversation with another patron about forrest gump that lasted well into the night. About how wrong Jenny did forrest and he loved her. That's another topic for another time. Nakiya was outstanding attentive, personable, and clearly great at what she does. The entire staff made the night memorable, and they truly add to the character of the bar. Keep the team exactly as it is. Ash Bar is a place I'll happily return to. read more

We stayed at the Ulysses for Valentine's weekend and had a reservation here for dinner. The servers and bartenders were friendly and attentive despite being super busy on a Friday night. Drinks were strong! Although we weren't hungry and mostly had snacks, the food was quite satisfying and delicious. We also had a couple mochas in the morning before heading out for breakfast. So I have traveled for business my entire adult life and dined in 100's of hotel based restaurants. The Ash bar brunch this week was fine but definitely not what a traveler in town for the weekend would consider was a winning complement to their stay. Ambiance: 5 stars! If I could give it 6 I would. The redevelopment of Ulysses property was wonderful. The Ash Bar ( and its companion Blooms) are decor snapshots from the 1930's. Food: Brunch was sort of a mess. Pastries were mostly out of stock. They has a brunch but the quiche was also out that day. The salmon and other basics were fine ... but nothing special. Prices were fair so that's good .. but honestly I would pay more for better quality. Service: Friendly and accurate but needs staff augmentation professional oversight. The waiter was really nice ( that can't be trained!) but he was dressed like he was going to the hardware store not serving in a boutique hotel dining room. I don't need them in bow ties but ripped jeans and untucked shirts seem blow standard. He just needed training. The food runner was really useful because there was only one server for the 10+; 3-4 seat tables. Hey.. its hard to staff and operate a restaurant profitably. But The Ulysses has a captive audience. My advice... stay in the hotel, drink in Blooms.. but find somewhere else to eat in Mount Vernon.. there are tons of places. read more

Stopped into Ash Bar for Sunday lunch on a whim with a group of friends. It was super convenient to be seated so last minute with a fairly large group of six. The inside is just as beautiful as ever and the service was fantastic. Our server was really friendly and despite the lengthy order, everything came out correct. That said, I felt like the flavor of the dishes fell short. I ordered the soft scrambled eggs on sourdough toast topped with creme fraiche, smoked salmon, and capers. Unfortunately, the eggs arrived cold and it was a small portion size. I also got a side of the pressed potatoes and bacon. The bacon was not like any bacon I've experienced before... and not in a good way. It had the consistency of cardboard and almost no flavor to it - perhaps it had been reheated several times that morning? I didn't finish it which says a lot since I will always finish a side of bacon. The pressed potatoes, however, were delightful. They really were the star of the show and I'm glad we decided to get so many for the table to share. I will say that my friend got the chicken caesar salad which, while pricey, seemed to be worth it as is came with a good quarter of juicy chicken. That actually seemed to be the best dish out of anyone's orders. Overall, I probably wouldn't return for a meal here but given the great service and the lovely interior, I wouldn't mind coming back for a cocktail or coffee. read more

Ash Bar was the first stop for my best friend's birthday. We came in at 5:00 si we caught Happy Hour and ordered a bunch of appetizers and a couple of drinks. She loved her French 75 and I enjoyed the White Sangria. Our spread of appetizers included the Pickle Selection, Maryland Crab Dip, Daily Bread with a shoyu butter, and Ramp Butter Mussels. I wish I had a pound of the shoyu butter. The golden beets were the star of the pickle selection for me, but the pickled pepper was amazing too. I was disappointed in the size of the mussels. The flavor was delicious, but I would not order again because of how small they were. The crab dip had a good flavor and came out sizzling, but it was enough lump crab for me. Ash bar is such an aesthetically pleasing place! Loved the colors. Picture perfect decor, very uncomfortable seating if you're sitting at a 2 or 4 top table. Between the four of us we tried The Vesper (my favorite by far), French 75's, Sangrias, and Sidecars. Everyone loved their cocktails and opted for seconds, some of us thirds. We tried the bread basket of the day (sourdough) with whipped butter. It had a nice sweetness to it, almost like honey wheat. We enjoyed it. We tried the 24 hr potatoes fried in duck fat it was a total flop for us. We needed salt, they were greasy, pass for me. We tried the crab dip. It was only okay, rather watery. For entrees two of us tried Shrimp Diablo (not listed on the website but on the physical menu at the restaurant). Loved it! I had the Steak Frites, really tender and tasty, huge and thick. 3 people ate from that steak. I enjoyed it but wouldn't get it again. We loved the fries. My other friend ordered the Caesar salad and added a chicken cutlet. It came out fried hard and a price tag of $34 bucks. Tasty Caesar though. For dessert, two of us ordered the Ginger cake - tasty. The lighting really sets the mood. It's lit dimly with the perfect amount of dim lights. The furniture and wallpaper were very unique. The floor work in addition to the crown molding on the ceiling gave it a really elevated look. The staff was extremely friendly-I was greeted warmly not only from the hostesses but also from other staff that were walking around the lounge area. The chef even spoke with me as he passed by and gave me a recommendation. Due to the glamour of the location I felt extremely underdressed (as I went straight after work with casual attire), but the staff assured me that everybody is welcome and that there's no dress code - and sure enough other people rolled in dressed down but definitely will come back dressed up! Leroy and Jessica were my servers and they were an amazing team. They were very attentive and held conversations with me. They do have happy hour if you're interested in trying samples of food. For appetizers I had the 24hr pressed potatoes which tasted like a very elevated hash brown. The garnish on top was an exciting twist of flavor and texture. For entrée I had The pan roasted chicken which the chef recommended and it was exceptionally good! Very flavorful and a great portion. I also had some of my friends dish which was the crab and it might have been the best crab cake I've had in a while. It was truly LUMP crab and a huge portion with flavor to match. The coleslaw paired really well with it. For dessert I had the Mille Feuille which tasted like a fancy toaster strudel with mango and pineapple filling wrapped in a sugar cookie. Despite a swanky interior, friendly service, and a great idea for a menu, Ash Bar's food falls flat and leaves a lot of room for improvements. I made reservations for a Saturday night for my fiancé and I, along with 2 friends. While we had a fun time, our server was friendly and helpful, the food was just not good. The space itself is beautiful and it's hard to believe you're in Baltimore anymore! Cocktails were pretty good, I loved the stemware. The hot toddy was great. The mezcal cocktail was good too! Unfortunately all the food wasn't very good. We started off with the potatoes - I expected so much! But they were not tastier than hash browns. The creme fraiche and roe were an attempt to jazz them up, but they added nothing. There were a big disappointment. For entrees, I got the bucatini, it was way too salty and overall just blah. My fiancé got the sausage, it was fine but ok and for $24, was disappointing. Our friends both got the flounder, and again, only ok. Neither of them loved it. I love a small menu, but the benefit should be that everything on it needs to be killer. The waiter also forgot our bread, not a big deal but didn't help as we already didn't love the food. I'm not sure if it's the chef or the menu, but the food at Ash Bar was bad. I think it's worth coming to just for cocktails but we do have tons of great cocktail bars in the city. I went into this place for a drink because I was nearby and thirsty - like underhydrated. I sat at the bar - it's kind of a cool, offbeat, old school spot. Shuttered windows, dark marble (could be another stone) bar top, wicker low backed chairs. They brought me the happy hour menu. I got a Pilsner Urquel for $4 and probably 2 glasses of water. Ash Bar is a really stunning bar. Now I've been to the cocktail bar Blooms on numerous occasions for drinks or a quick meet up with friends, but yet to try Ash Bar. Came this past Sunday for brunch with two friends. I will say the service and ambiance was fantastic. We had an early brunch, and our server Brandon( who was new) was so gracious and helpful. I was kind of skeptical because the menu was a lil sparse, but quickly changed when we ordered our food. Everything was delicious. We started with the bread and butter, I ordered a English muffin, my friend ordered the French baguette. Each comes with whipped butter and fresh preserves. My other friend ordered the ricotta fritters. Those were amazing and fresh out the fryer too. For breakfast I did the French toast with a side of bacon, my friend ordered the soft scrambled eggs on toast with a side of bacon and my other friend ordered the eggs Benedict. Everyone enjoyed their food. I wish I took photos, because the food looked amazing. I will definitely be returning for happy hour, dinner or brunch again. read more

Tucked away on the first floor of the Ulysses hotel, this place is dark, romantic, and classy. The walls are all made of a pink-hued stone paneling and the warm lights cast a golden glow throughout the room. You feel like you entered a different era as soon as you cross the threshold. We came to Ash Bar as stop #2 for Baltimore Restaurant Week. This place is new and while I think there are still a few growing pains to get through, overall the staff worked as a well-oiled machine. Every staff member was super friendly, happy to answer any question, and gave their honest answers. The bar was a little slow to get our drinks but they were taking care of the orders of an ever-filling restaurant, as well as handling a really large party of about 16, on top of serving patrons at the full bar. Thankfully, as soon as our drinks came out, so did our food! For the three-course menu, we chose mushroom arancini, lobster bisque as our starters, squash agnolotti and catch of the day (rockfish) for the mains, and ended with chocolate hazelnut cake and apple almond cake. Overall, everything was incredible! We didn't have a single complaint, we just kept eating every course. The mushroom arancini was very yummy and the lobster bisque delivered with huge chunks of rich lobster meat. The squash agnolotti was creamy, sweet, savory, and earthy. I loved the mushroom and spinach mixed in. The rockfish was incredibly fresh and the bed of couscous and veggies was so good. Another gem of a bar in Mt Vernon. Hotel Ulysses has two bars - ash and blooms. They are both fantastic and I would highly recommend them. Ash bar is slightly larger and they have food options. Blooms on the other hand is more intimate and just has small bites. If you're going with a larger group of people (say more than 4), Ash bar might be a better options. Service is fantastic and the ambience is on point. Lots of wonderful cocktail options, and priced reasonably. We went with a group of friends, some of them grabbed a table to eat dinner while the rest of the us lounged on their sofas and had drinks. Worked out well for us! We went on a Friday night without a reservation and were immediately seated. I don't know how busy it gets but if you're going with a large group might be worth getting a reservation. We went to a Sunday brunch on a rainy day. The place was pretty empty but the hostess was friendly. I love the decor of this place. Electic and cozy. I chose to split a green goddess salad (forgot to photograph) and had two cups of their cortado. Honestly it's the best cup of coffee outside of Europe. The coffee stands out more than their food outside of the crispy potato nuggets with crème fraiche and salmon roe. Would go back for a cozy brunch and a visit to a museum afterward. I cannot say enough good things about this place. We spent a weekend in Baltimore and stayed one night at the Ulysses and had dinner at Ash Bar. The decor is even more amazing in person and the staff was kind and attentive. I tried both spritzes on the menu and my husband had the Negroni- there were no complaints. For starters, we shared an order of the oysters, shrimp and crab roll, and 24 hour pressed potatoes - all were heavenly. I can't stop thinking about the potatoes, they were on par with a similar dish I had in Dubai. For dinner, we split the Fennel salad and the bucatini - both were so so good. I've been to Ash Bar for brunch twice now (the first time was early on after they opened and again last week), and I enjoyed the experience both times. First of all, the restaurant (on the left side of the lobby in the newly renovated Ulysses Hotel) is gorgeous, a stunner. Vibes for days. The service was also great both times. Then, the food! The first time I visited I had a Caesar and their demi baguette with whipped butter and preserves. The second time, I had their everything bagel and gravlax plate (which comes with cucumber, radish, sundried tomato, cornichons, whipped cream cheese, and herbs). Both options were great. The soft scrambled eggs on toast (they make it three ways - smoked salmon, spinach and goat cheese, or speck and Parmesan) have always bee a hit with my friends and family that ordered it. They also offer some great small plates to share, too - we've had the 24-hour pressed potatoes (fried in duck fat and dressed with sour cream and trout roe) both times (delicious), but they also have monkey bread and ricotta fritters! Brunch cocktails or coffee drinks, too - so they have it all. If you're looking for a vibey, cool brunch in Mount Vernon, check out Ash Bar. Ever since this hotel opened in Baltimore, we had been waiting to check it out! Our experience is detailed below. The ambiance was absolutely gorgeous, with really comfortable seating, a tablecloth that could be drawn on(with crayons provided), low lighting, and interesting decor. It's extremely cozy and overall just very beautiful. 5/5 The drink menu is fairly small, and every cocktail is pretty expensive. We ordered an old fashioned and the Mezcal Martinez. We were 1 of 2 tables there, with only one person sitting at the bar, and our drinks took about 18 minutes to come. The bartender was talking with the guy at the bar while very very leisurely making our cocktails, paying little to no mind to them. She also added ice to each mixing glass, stirred them, went back to talking to the man while our drinks are sitting their diluting for 5+ minutes, and then strained them one at a time, very slowly. The Mezcal martinez was actually pretty good, but the old fashioned was extremely watered down , was on chipped ice instead of a big rock, and just didn't taste right. We later overheard the bartender mention to someone that it was her first bar job, which is awesome for her(we're both bartenders so we understand everyone has to start somewhere) but at a place where cocktails are $15+, we expected a higher level of craft/care for basic drinks. 2/5 As for the food, none of the entrees were jumping out at us, so we got several small plates/sides. We ordered the marinated olives, the 24 hr pressed potatoes, the broccolini side, and the popovers. Overall, everything was pretty good, but nothing was spectacular, and the portions were EXTREMELY small. We love tapas, but these were just crazy. $16 for 5 hash browns the size of a quarter is wild. 3/5 The service, aside from the length of time to receive the drinks, was lovely. Our waitress, Jordan, was really friendly, informative, and helpful. The entire staff was warm and welcoming, and pretty attentive when it came to refilling waters/bussing our table. 4/5 Overall, this building/hotel is a really cool unique place, and if you're interested in just a small snack or a cocktail I would suggest checking it out, but for the price and the portions, as well as the bar program, there are much better places you could go in Baltimore. We had 2 drinks and 4 small plates total and spent $95 (including tip) and had to go straight to a taco place after because we were still starving. It's a great option because since it's inside a hotel they are open when other restaurants are usually closed (Mondays), but also because it's delicious!! It was fairly empty at 8pm on a Monday, and we were seated immediately without a reservation. Our server was friendly and was pretty on top of things. We ordered the steak, the mushroom risotto, and a number of appetizers for the group. The clear winner of all of the dishes was the mushroom risotto, *chef's kiss* it was sooo good! The whole place is pretty instagramable too with the pink lights everywhere. I also love that the table cloths are paper and they will give you crayons to draw with. Yes, I'm an adult, but sometimes it's nice to act like a kid. It's on the pricier end of things, but the food is pretty good and it feels like a nice spot for a date. read more

Once we ordered, to took another 15 mins for drinks (a wine and a martini) and another long while for our food. Ash Bar has a dimly lit, intimate atmosphere with elegant vintage decor. It is located within the Ulysses Hotel in Mount Vernon. The food was delicious with appropriate portion sizes and a relatively large menu for a cocktail bar. The appetizers and entrees were cooked to perfection and seasoned well. The only aspect that could be improved upon is that the service was a bit slow, but the manager came by to check on us multiple times so we were able to give our drink orders to him. The appetizer was quick to arrive, however the entrees did not arrive until 25 minutes later. The cheesecake was light, refreshing, and was composed with a variety of flavors and textures. First the good: the food we had (duck rillettes, salmon rillettes, fromage blanc, and a salami/pate plate) ranged from excellent to outstanding, and the service was amazing. The drinks (a couple of classic cocktails) were fine. The space is fabulous, very dramatically designed and lit; it does a great job capturing the "bygone era" look they are apparently after. However, we went for dinner and that wasn't a good choice. Someone described the menu as sparse, and they weren't kidding; we actually initially weren't sure whether we had a starters only menu of some kind. They only listed maybe 2-3 things that might be considered a light entree (duck rillettes, salmon rillettes, and tuna), and they were out of the tuna. Not really a "dinner" type menu, especially as none of those came with sides. It was definitely more of a "drinks and small plates" situation. This may have been the menu when we went (apparently it changes frequently), as I see a lot of reviews talking about steak, chicken cutlet, and so on. So for two people, we basically ordered everything on the menu that might add up to a meal, and we made out all right. The food was good, the bread was amazing (literally everything we ordered was "something on bread"). I would explore again for a light meal, or after the menu changes. Wish I could have reviewed the food, drink, decor and service as was looking forward to checking out place after long drive at night from NYC but sadly when got there for my 945 reservation the place had closed early at 9pm. I did not get a call, email, text or notification through Resy. I talked to hostess at bloom the cocktail bar in same hotel who took my info and told me manager would call me. Never got the call and when got drink at blooms next night I do not think hostess even remembered me. The restaurant has a cozy, laidback vibe. We got the tuna tartare as an appetizer and it was seasoned perfectly and served with rosemary potato chips. For my meal I got the rockfish served with rice pilaf and steamed kale. It was delicious and very flavorful. We love Ash Bar for brunch after staying the night at Ulysses. Everything is excellent but we love the duck fat pressed potatoes and lox plate. read more

Went for a drink last week during the Charles Street Festival. We sat at the bar. I love the decor of the place and had been there once before with everyone being very nice. Food was above average. The reason behind this review is the bartender. Usually at a place that fashions itself as a cocktail bar, I have found the bartenders to be warm and welcoming. Our bartender was condescending to someone in our party, lecturing her about taking the time out to see what other patrons are drinking before ordering something. Not sure if it was meant to be rude but definitely came across as rude. read more

Pasta is divine. Such a cute spot. Went back twice. Highly recommend getting reservations and going for a cute night with your friends or a cuteee date. Also love the bar across the hall!!! read more
